rough art tips to learn and then break at your leisure.
the distance between your eyes is roughly one eye. the corners of your mouth dont extend past the middle of each eye. ears are roughly in the middle of the tip of the nose and the eyebrow. the eyes are in the very centre of the head. the neck is just a Little slimmer than the width of the head (varies with fat distribution, but fat tends to build up under the chin). hair is easier to draw when you plot out the hairline and then where it parts. leaving appropriate distance on the side of the face (cheekbone area and back to ear) contributes to making characters look more realistic/hot as hell. i dont know specific tips for that so use reference. an amazing reference/study site is lineofaction.com . if you think of the face in planes it makes it easier to construct (look up tutorials). if you draw a spiral like a tornado it can help you figure out awkward perspective for extended limbs (look up foreshortening coil technique). tangent lines are when two lines intersect and cause visual confusion (when it looks like a line that defines an arm is part of the line that defines a building, for example) and avoiding them makes your art way easier to comprehend. quick trick to good composition: choose a focal point (where you want your viewer to focus), detail that area the most, and make sure various elements of the piece are pointing to that focal point. you can use colours to contrast hue, saturation, and brightness and make certain elements of your drawing stand out. drawing in greyscale can help you figure out values. using black in a piece isn't illegal but you should know what you're doing when you do use it- it desaturates a piece and if used as a shading colour can desaturate and dull whatever youre shading too. if you use almost-black lineart and then add black to darken the very darkest areas it will do a lot to add some nice depth. the tip of your thumb ends just above the start of your index finger- your thumb also has two knuckles and all your other fingers have three. if you see an artist doing something you like (the way they draw noses or eyes or hair or anything else) you can try to copy that and see if you want to incorporate it in your style <- this is ENCOURAGED and how a lot of us learned and developed our styles. there are ways to add wrinkles to faces and bodies without making the character look a million years old, you just have to keep experimenting with it. The smile wrinkles around your muzzle dont connect to your mouth or to your nose; there should be a small space in between smile or nose and the wrinkle line. eyes when viewed in profile are like < aka a little triangle shape. think of the pupil like a disk and apply foreshortening to it (it looks like a line when seen from the side instead of a full round dot). subtle gradients can add a LOT to a piece. texture can also add a LOT. look up Tommy Arnold's work (his murderbot pieces are some of my FAVOURITE) and zoom in. find those random little circles he added and try to figure out why he added them there. light bounces. there's lots of way light bounces. sometimes it even spreads through the skin. i do not know these light tricks yet but i want you to know that they exist. draw a circle to indicate hand placement, draw a straight line between that circle and the shoulder, and then (normally at a right angle) draw a straight line on top of that line to find the placement of the elbow. elbows are normally placed Just above the hip when standing and your arm is at rest. there are no bad colour combos if you're brave enough about it, just fuck with the saturation and brightness until it works. keep playing. try new things. add your own tips to this post if you want or even expand on some ive mentioned here. good luck go ham etc
#look at this post#the sum of almost all of my art knowledge#all that i can remember rn anyway lmaooo#shit i didn't mention the tips for backgrounds that i know#eh that's environment most of this deals with character work anyway#i learned most of this from tutorials and kind artists who like to talk about their work#i would not know NEARLY as much about creative shit as i do if it weren't for the people who were willing to talk about their skills#and their tricks and their observations. id be nothing without them i dont remember most of them but i am so so grateful for that kindness#so ig here ill spread that a little further#if you have any questions go ahead and ask i am a NERD about art okay i do not know everything but i am always willing to talk about what i#do know#art tips#one of the most important things for you to do as an experienced or beginner artist tho#is to PLAY#experiment#figure out what's fun and what looks nice and what looks nice faster and just. whatever the fuck you want to learn#it is SUCH a joy

People have been talking about learned helplessness, but what about trained helplessness, forced helplessness, compliant helplessness?
#learned helplessness is sorta putting the impetus on the victim of the learnin so to speak#they were taught and often forced#to comply with abandoning their competence and surrendering to whatever force is acting on them to comply#and that becomes an instilled habit enforced socially across various environments like school#or work or at the home#it’s also an anti-play mindset#kids are creative playful and full of optimism and desire to grow#that is often not rewarded and actively punished by adults in different settings#learned helplessness

fell down the youtube rabbithole of essays about the indie internet and 90/y2k-style personal and self-made websites on neocities et al as counterculture to the modern internet and guess what ads i keep getting. fuckin. ai-powered website tools where you write a prompt and get a ready-to-use pre-made website in minutes. brb i'm gonna go kill all ai and marketing companies with hammers 💥💥💥
#add that to the list of hints that we live in the darkest timeline!#youtube person: here's why you should free yourself from algorithms and join the indie internet with your unique and self-made website!#it will take some effort and there's a learning curve and it might look a bit tacky and it's absolutely unprofitable#but it's fun uniquely your own and builds community!#ad on the same video: stop using your brain give up creativity and get a website that looks like every other website!#give us money feed us your data and use the plagiarism environment-destroying job-stealing machine!!#it's all so fucking bleak man.#x

look, generally i’m big on “to each their own” but why, pray tell, why would you enter a fandom or environment of any sort with a bunch of extraordinary artists, writers, etc, and proudly display something made by ai?
like does it not feel insulting in itself to walk amongst a crowd of people who are putting in hours and hours of labor out of passion to create something as an ode of respect or appreciation for another piece of media that was man made with equal quantities of love, and then try to throw in something created by a software that will crank out an image/text within seconds just to be a part of the crowd because you’re either too lazy or unwilling to put in the same amount of effort as everybody else? *a software that is most commonly designed by plugging in the art of non consenting artists to train the program, i might add.

if you don’t know how to draw, that’s fine! everything and i mean EVERYTHING needs to be learned. nobody wakes up and just magically knows how to write breathtaking poetry or can sculpt magnificent statues. that’s where the magic is and why art (although decreasingly) has held as much value as it has throughout the evolution of mankind. it all lies within the fact that somebody cared enough to put in all the blood, sweat and tears that they did, and you are destroying that by either engaging with ai, or just promoting the mindset that you should so easily resort to a goddamn machine to do it for you due to your own defeat at the idea that you “just can’t do it”
if you can’t even TRY, then you don’t deserve to have created anything at all, and perhaps i would be willing to entertain an argument on the opposite end of that mindset as i understand that things such as disabilities and shortage of time factor in, but i must stand by my principles on the matter as a whole because you had rather insult those that you admire and hope to be like through generating this “art” rather than taking inspiration from them and striving to reach their skill level by practice, and that is a grotesque level of simple mindedness that sickens me.
#friendly reminder that if you want to see something made- make it yourself#learn to photoshop even for christ’s sake. literally ANYTHING is better than ai#i would like to apologize but i’m not gonna because i just REALLY don’t fuck with AI#it’s so fucking insulting#especially in spaces that are KNOWN to be environments for creative expression. why would you do that????#i’m all fired up

Thinking about the time I was unanimously voted my college’s “favorite lesbian”
#being relatively popular at a small weird women’s college was very interesting#I say relatively popular because I was not super aware of it at the time#but rather learned of my status when I started doing some part time consultant work for my college right after graduating#and visiting my underclassmen friends that were still on campus#I’m the kind of person where people were excited to see me again just so they could report that they are also gay now#I know a lot of people that did not enjoy their time at our college for a number of valid reasons#but god it was such a good environment for me socially and creatively#don’t mistake this for nostalgia because I was also the most mentally ill I have ever been while there#but I went there for a degree and ended up learning who I was as a person#which is not always a given#I really thrived there#and just imagine if I had been medicated then… I would’ve been unstoppable#that was gods way of keeping me humble#anyway#feeling that kind of community and connectedness now at work#in a very similar way that I found in college and have not felt since college#so very very good stuff

Ai this ai that maybe stop and think for a second why college students are jumping to make their work easier or why they're so thoroughly disinterested in putting effort. Maybe, maybe their efforts are never respected? Maybe our education system quality has gone to shit that a simple language model can answer most of its questions? Students are always overworked to the point of destroying their health ten ways to Sunday. Maybe, maybe, we should focus on how to create a better learning environment for them in the first place. If all it took was a measly subpar AI model to destroy, the education world was never strong enough in the first place.
Calling the toxic and borderline abusive systems of college/university that exploits students day and night as "living" and shaming the kids who take an easier path .... Is not the hot take poetry they think it is.
I'm not supporting the use of genAI in university, but I definitely believe this shaming people for taking the easier way out isn't the best approach. Empathy and understanding for the student and getting creative with the work itself, evolving it to incorporate AI in useful, helpful ways to maintain the integrity of learning. That might just help save this generation.
Honestly, y'all, I'm begging you. Take the time to think and learn for yourself. Even if it's just something casual like knitting or cooking. Exercise your brain. It's important.
#I'm honestly tired of this anti ai bullshit#that stuff aint going anywhere#we need to evolve with it#more creative assignments that makes students think and solve stuff#supportive environment for learning to facilitate interest and effort#ai#aiintegration#coming from the frustrated and tired to death student who took a lot of help from chatgpt for writing her thesis#because i was hlf dead from working non stop every day for two months and could barely fujction in the last week i needed to write and finis#ai in education#anti ai ❌#anti education system

Why do we Still Treat Subjects Like a Status Symbol “Science, Commerce, Arts” Why do we still treat these as a hierarchy instead of choices? Too often, students are labeled by the subjects they pick: 🔹 Science? “You must be smart.” 🔹 Commerce? “That’s... practical.” 🔹 Arts? “Didn’t do well in school?” But education isn’t a scoreboard. It’s a journey of discovery, curiosity, and purpose. ✨ Every subject has value. ✨ Every stream has thinkers, creators, and leaders. ✨ Every child deserves the chance to choose what feels right for them not what sounds impressive to others. At Newsepick, we’re building a space where learning goes beyond the syllabus and subjects into real-world exposure, critical thinking, and self-discovery. Where children can explore who they are before being told what they should be. Because the future isn’t shaped by the stream they pick It’s shaped by the passion they bring to it. 💬 What do you think we can do as educators, parents, and mentors to help children choose without fear? Creative expression plays a powerful role in a child’s development. Montessori art activities offer a unique way for children to explore their imagination while building essential life skills. These activities promote independence, self-confidence, and problem-solving—all through the simple joy of creating. It’s the kind of meaningful experience that reflects the child-centered approach found in a Montessori school in California.
