Favourite (Cui Xin x Wang Hang)
also available on ao3 :)
Cui Xin loved taking pictures. Everyone knew that. He would always take pictures of Cang Shu and Qi Lin โ€“ ignoring the latter's glares. As a cosplayer, he would sometimes take pictures of himself, even if most of the time Jian Fengfeng would do it for him, and he had slowly learnt to pay attention to how he stood, the background or the shadows on his face when he took a picture.
Not that he cared about that when he took one of Cang Shu and Qi Lin, they were always perfect.
His gallery was full of pictures of the two girls, and sometimes there were pictures of himself with Jian Fengfeng. He liked looking at them and remembering the joyful moments leading to them. Among all those pictures, he couldn't tell which one was his favourite.
Yet, there was one he had put to his favourites on his phone.
Lying down on his bed, Cui Xin was looking at his pictures when he saw it. He was about scroll down and ignore it, but he froze when he looked at Wang Hang's smiling face.
Honestly, he didn't even know how they became friends. One day, Wang Hang was glaring at him and the next, he was clinging to him as if they were best friends. But Cui Xin would lie if he said he didn't like this friendship. Wang Hang wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but he couldn't help wanting to follow him even when he had stupid ideas.
Cui Xin smiled when he saw the heart at the bottom of the picture, signaling it was one of his favourites. He wasn't naive enough to ignore his own feelings. He knew why he was smiling when Wang Hang sent him a meme or why his heart went wild when they were too close. But for now, staying friends was enough.
He locked his phone and placed it on his nightstand before going to bed. As he closed his eyes, he thought about the moments he spent with Wang Hang. The way he had held him in the haunted house as if he weighed nothing. That time he had supported him when he had tried to hide the fact that he wasn't a female cosplayer but a male cosplayer. And, of course, that awkward time before they became friend, when Wang Hang had stared at him for a while before taking off his shirt and showing off his abs.
He laughed and blushed when he remembered his serious face when he had asked him if he wanted to compare their muscles.
Wang Hang was an odd boy. But that was why Cui Xin loved him.
As he fell asleep, Cui Xin allowed himself one last selfish thought. Staying friends was enough, but for how long?

The sofa on which everything changed
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง ("Il divano su cui รจ cambiato tutto" Versione Inglese)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The new sofa was stiff, the fabric was as tight as a violin string, it was like sitting on a wooden bench. Riccardo didn't feel like a person sitting on a sofa, he thought he looked more like a toy placed there, where some careless child had placed it and forgotten it.
A mug full of tea, feet on the table, some music...
Riccardo listened to the radio wrapped in his very white, soft and scented fleece sweatshirt. He had tried to make himself comfortable on that new sofa, he was trying to feel at home in the rented apartment starting from the simplest things he could think of. However, the way in which he had arrived on that sofa was anything but simple, Riccardo's life had been completely revolutionized in just a few weeks.
Riccardo's father, a gruff and very religious man, had insisted that his son start working in the family's small hardware store in Saronno. Riccardo on the other hand wanted to go to university, he didn't even know what he wanted to study but he was certain that he didn't want to spend his life surrounded by allen keys, siphons and bolts. "I know what's best for you" the father kept repeating in a dry and authoritative tone. Riccardo had tried everything to convince him, but with the big hard head that his father had, the man remained adamant on his decision.
One evening Riccardo decided to play the last card he had available and after having made his parents sit on the sofa, he took courage and announced: "Dad, Mom, I like boys". The father responded with laughter, followed only by silence. Realizing that it wasn't a joke, a veil of disbelief passed before his eyes, and then exploded into ferocious anger. He would have strangled that ungrateful son, how dare he? The man's hands would have already been wrapped around the young man's frail neck, if his mother, who rarely asserted her opinions, had not intervened. Half an hour later Riccardo was outside the front door and walking bent under the weight of a large backpack, dragging two suitcases larger than him. His whole life was inside, thrown haphazardly. Paradoxically, Riccardo had never felt so light-hearted and, although his soul was hurt, he smiled at the thought that the next day he would go to see the state university of Milan. Riccardo spent a sleepless night at the Saronno station; he took the first train to Milan at 5:44 and then headed straight for the university.
Tumblr media
Having arrived in front of the large building, he had to wait an hour and a half, because the large door opened at 7.30. In the almost deserted square, his eyes rested on a rainbow flyer hanging on the wall: it indicated the appointments of the LGBTQ+ collective of the university. Riccardo took a photo of it with his cell phone, thinking that perhaps someone among the members of that group could host him for a few days. When the guard opened the doors, Riccardo tried to reach the internal courtyard, but was immediately stopped: "where are you going with all these suitcases?" The guard asked, โ€œThey're for a lesson, I'm here because I have to assemble all the equipment. They told me we're on the top floor" Riccardo lied. The guard pointed with a perplexed look towards the way to an elevator that took him to the top floor, and Riccardo thanked him and set off with a determined step, before the guard could ask anything else. Once in the bathroom on the top floor, the poor exhausted boy locked the door and fell asleep.
It was long after noon when Riccardo woke up and headed to the meeting of the LGBTQ+ collective. Everywhere he went all those suitcases made him feel like a Martian who had just landed on planet earth. Riccardo identified the meeting room without problems, it was the noisiest of all. The cheerful chatter of those present did not stop when the boy entered the classroom, but a few poorly concealed glances quickly flew from the boy's face, to his body, to his heavy luggage.
As usual, before starting the meeting each boy stood up in turn repeating out loud his name, his faculty, how many years he had been studying and how many years he had attended the collective. When it was his turn, Riccardo stood up and said "I'm Riccardo, I'm 19 years old, I'm not a student and my parents just kicked me out of our home". Since everyone was staring at him with dismay and made no sign of going on with the introductions, Riccardo continued his story by summarizing what had happened to him in the last hours.
That evening Riccardo slept on the sofa of a group of roommates who were members of the collective, the following day the boys of the collective had spread Riccardo's story to half of the LGBTQ+ community of Milan. For three weeks Riccardo bounced from one sofa to another, he quickly found a job as an usher at the Carcano, the famous theater, then finally he moved (more or less permanently) renting a room in an apartment in the suburbs. Now he shared the house with Simone, a thirty-year-old with a massive physique: he had no hair, he was not very manly in his ways and he worked as an assistant and researcher at the university. The two got along well, but their schedules were so different that they rarely crossed paths in the apartment.
Tumblr media
That day Simone had to give a lecture at university, so Riccardo was alone at home. Riccardo sat on that stiff sofa with the cup in his hand and while the tea bag colored the water, the young man's fingers turned over the strange colored paper package where the teabag had been kept shortly before. "I wonder where does Silvia get these things?" he thought. Silvia was a friend of Simone, one of those girls who think they are a bit witchy and collect crystals and supposedly magical objects; wherever Silvia passed, she left behind a trail of trinkets and nonsense that she believed were prodigious and Simone let her do it, just to make her happy. The sachet had some illegible writing on it, but for Riccardo it was as if it said "Silvia brought this".
Smoke rose silently from the cup of hot water, and a sweet aroma wafted through the room. "...Vanilla? ...Caramel? ...Hazelnut?" Riccardo asked himself as he inhaled the intense fragrance released by the cup. It was such a full-bodied scent that it seemed to penetrate the skin and warm the body like a hot bath. There you go, perhaps for the first time in weeks Riccardo was managing to relax. "If only this fleece sweatshirt didn't itch so much," he thought, and then he began to undress. It was a really strange garment, until a few moments ago it seemed soft and comfortable, but now it stung unbearably.
Tumblr media
Standing shirtless on the sofa, Riccardo brought the cup to his lips, blew, and then took a small sip: it was the best tea he had ever drunk, sweet but not cloying, it almost tasted like... A kiss. This too was a strange thought, Riccardo had never kissed a man's lips, yet that was the taste he associated it with. Riccardo waited patiently to let the drink cool down a little, then took a few sips. The warmth of the drink spread to every corner of his body, giving a profound feeling of well-being. It had been a lifetime since Riccardo felt so good, he felt alive, he wanted to go for a run outside, to go out and look at the sky, to start a new chapter in his life...
"I have to ask Silvia where she got this stuff" he thought, scratching his beard.
Tumblr media
Yet another unusual event: Riccardo had never had a beard, yet now it was there, thick and black, almost like that of his roommate. Riccardo, prey to the almost orgasmic sensation given by the colorful tea, paid no attention to his beard, nor to the hair that was starting to grow on the rest of his body. The beard gave Riccardo a distinguished look, he looked a few years older but it suited him really well. With that hair he looked more muscular, but was it an illusion or were they real muscles? How was something like this possible? This explained his desire to move and run, his new muscles were warm and ready, like a racing bike that had just left the store. But running for what? Running to whom? Riccardo decided to get dressed and go out, but first he finished the contents of his cup in large gulps.
The desire to go out immediately vanished and Riccardo remained sitting exactly as before, dazed and in disbelief. A sense of sudden relaxation permeated his body, which gradually began to sink into the sofa. The cushions bent and deformed under the sudden weight of Riccardo's mass, which began to increase impressively. The little skin and bones body that Riccardo had until a few minutes before was nothing but a distant memory, covered as it was with muscles, flesh and fur.
Tumblr media
The transformation that was taking place would have astonished anyone, a little man of not even twenty years old now easily looked over thirty, and had multiplied his size as he never could have done in his life, not even if he had started living by binging and lifting weights. Riccardo was satisfied, relaxed and happy, a bit like how you feel after a big Christmas dinner.
When that feeling dissipated, he reached a mirror and observed himself with satisfaction: He was a really good-looking man. Despite the absurdity of the situation, Riccardo remained calm, as if everything was perfectly under control, as if he were the one who wanted to change into another person. The more he looked at himself in the mirror, the more he realized that his build looked like an exact copy of Simone's. Who knows what the neighbors would have said? With those two gorillas in the apartment next door (one of which had probably eaten that skinny boy who is no longer seen). Speaking of Simone, how could he explain to him that that teabag had transformed him into such a beast? At the word "beast" Riccardo had the idea of โ€‹โ€‹checking a very important part of the body, which he hadn't yet thought about. Even before he put his hand there, he couldn't help but feel a certain movement in his underwear, but a sudden noise interrupted the delicate moment: they were Simone's keys in the lock of the door. Riccardo's heart began to beat so fast that it seemed to have grown too. For the first time a sense of concern permeated that new and massive body, which now walked awkwardly in front of the front door.
Tumblr media
The door swung open revealing a tiny figure covered in a much too big blue t-shirt. A cute and frowning blond boy was staring at Riccardo. "Simone?" Riccardo asked in amazement.
Simone had drunk the same tea that morning, but to him it seemed like a perfectly normal tea and he had gone to give his lesson. During the return journey on the tram, he felt sudden dizziness and decided to get off, fearing that traveling on public transport would make the situation worse. As he walked home, he began to shrink and rejuvenate, and while his body took the shape of Riccardo's, soft blond hair grew on his head, while his beard vanished without leaving the slightest trace. Simone couldn't believe what was happening, how could he stop this? The more his body transformed, the more the desire to run home arose in him, which was quite difficult with shoes and clothes that were decidedly too big, so much so that he necessarily had to hold them up firmly with his hands so as not to lose them on the street. The poor guy ran holding those enormous trousers with two hands, it almost looked like he was taking part in a sack race. Since the trousers fell everywhere and hid nothing, they were now just an obstacle and Simone decided to abandon them on the street. Running in his underwear allowed him to go faster, after all there was only the last bit of road left to go.
Tumblr media
He reached the front door repeating in his head the speech he wanted to give to Riccardo to explain what had happened to him, but the biggest shock was yet to come.
Opening the door Simone was astonished, but immediately understood that that big, bare-chested man with a visible erection in his trousers was none other than Riccardo.
It wasn't necessary to say another word, the two knew exactly what had happened to the other, even if they had no idea why something like this had happened. Then they felt stronger than ever that impulse to sprint, to run, to reach... each other. That was why Riccardo wanted to run out, the same reason that pushed Simone to run home: A magnetic force attracted them to each other. Simone swallowed, his eyes moving from Riccardo's face to his swollen package, while his little feet moved carrying him towards the big man. As Simone walked, he also dropped his underwear, which was now loose on him. Riccardo also freed Simone from his shirt (which almost reached his knees) and saw that Simone was also very excited. While Simone tried to return the favor and unbuttoned his roommate's belt, Riccardo couldn't help but look at the little body in front of him, with his small throbbing erection: "you're the cutest thing I've ever seen" he said.
Simone blushed and once he had removed the belt from Riccardo's trousers, he pushed him towards the bedroom and closed the front door.
Riccardo lifted Simone and put him on the bed, he thought he looked really cute small like that, then without hesitation he took off his own trousers and underwear.
Tumblr media
Simone didn't even have time to realize that Riccardo's member was even bigger than the one he had before transforming. Riccardo reached his roommate, dragging his knees on the sheets and bent down to give him a kiss: it was a sweet-tasting kiss, perhaps because Riccardo's lips still tasted like tea. Simone had never received a kiss like that, he would have liked time to stop there. Riccardo's warm skin in contact with Simone's was the most beautiful sensation they had ever felt.
Riccardo moved, made Simone lie on his back and opened his legs, to insert his bearded face under his balls: it was such a sensitive spot that Simone was afraid of coming immediately, only to be touched there by Riccardo's lips, who instead he started licking the boy's little hole. Simone trembled with pleasure (since when was he so sensitive?) while he clung to the sheets, the desire to grasp the gigantic manhood of that big man with both hands made room in his head.
When Riccardo raised his head, Simone moved and gave way to Riccardo, noticing that in his haste he had forgotten to remove his socks. While the big man stretched out his broad back on the bed, Simone struggled to take off his gray socks, now deformed because they covered feet that had just multiplied their size. There was something exciting in this action, Simone thought it was weird, he had never had similar tastes, usually feet left him indifferent, but now he couldn't let Riccardo's heavy leg fall back on the mattrass. Instead, he brought his foot close to his lips and kissed the sole of the large foot, then ran it over the skin of his torso, up to his pubis. Riccardo, smiling amused, used his toes to tickle Simone's erection which now more than ever seemed about to explode. Extremely excited, Simone lowered his face to Riccardo's hairy pubis and kissed him repeatedly. Riccardo's erection was also throbbing, Simone grabbed it with one hand, while the other delicately held the two big balls. Riccardo suddenly felt totally subservient to that bold blond, now that his powerful new tool was entirely in his hands. Simone brought his face closer to the precious loot and took it into his mouth, putting into practice all the experience he had in this kind of things. Riccardo, faced with that completely new sensation, was on the verge of coming several times, but before doing so there was at least one other thing he wanted to try.
Tumblr media
Simone moved and straddled Riccardo, as if it were the response to a telepathic message. After having lubricated the area properly and having put the largest condom that was in Simone's drawer, Riccardo delicately inserted his member into Simone's thin opening. He was generally versatile, but it had been years since he had found a top partner. It was one of the most intense relationships of his life, and he thought that whatever had happened had been necessary to bring the two of them there, in that moment, in that form, into that bed. They came within seconds of each other, then moved to the bathroom to clean themselves.
With a slightly clearer mind, Riccardo asked: "...and now? what do we do looking like this?". Simone, sitting on the bidet, had his back to his roommate and without raising his eyes replied: "Thereโ€™s only one thing to do: now I'll call Silvia and ask her if this situation is temporary or permanent. If necessary, we'll stay at home for some time waiting for it to wear off".
Riccardo's face darkened, he didnโ€™t know why but he didn't want things to go back to the way they were before. "If it's just a temporary thing, would you like to have another cup of that tea every now and then?" Riccardo asked with a shyness that was even more endearing on a big man like that. "Another cup of what? And what if it's permanent?" Simone replied in an astonished and worried tone. Riccardo crouched behind Simone and gave him a kiss on the shoulder, then said: "If it were permanent, would you like to go out with me?"

from this article by China Daily about Xiao Zhanโ€™s drama WDB. ๐Ÿค
Tumblr media
"The integrity, kindness and sense of justice that define Xiao Chunsheng harmonize seamlessly with Xiao Zhan's simplicity and sincerity. Moreover, in terms of appearance, Xiao Zhan's stature and posture perfectly suit the role,"
TV series taps into nostalgia of bygone era and the sense of optimism that captivated China's youth in 30 years.
As winter descends, the frozen Shichahai ice rink becomes a stage for young individuals gliding carefree across its surface. The profound contrast between the frigid ice and the passionate fervor of the young skaters creates a captivating tableau.
The youthfulness of this cohort finds its genesis in Shichahai, where their emotions and destinies will become intricately woven together. Over the next three decades, their fates will undergo a continuous metamorphosis, mirroring the relentless changing of the times.
This is the narrative that unfolds in the domestically produced drama The Youth Memories, a 38-episode television series that was broadcast on both China Central Television and Tencent Video this year.
Directed by Fu Ning and starring Xiao Zhan, Li Qin, Liu Ruilin, Cao Feiran, Zhao Xin and Cui Hang, the drama is set in Beijing in the 1970s and tells the story of a group of young people who grow up, pursue their dreams, and struggle during the early period of reform and opening-up.
This series has captivated attention since its casting and production to its on-air debut. The conscientious craftsmanship of the production team, evident in details like costumes and props, coupled with the dedicated performances of the group of young actors, has resulted in the show achieving both impressive viewership ratings and positive acclaim.
Yang Chenghu, a professor from Beijing Normal University, comments that the series not only provides a snapshot of a bygone era, but also preserves a love story etched deep within the memories of an older generation.
Through its vibrant portrayal of ambitious and dynamic young characters, it gives play to the anthem of youth, conveying profound reflections on the spirit of the times and the essence of life, Yang says.
Zhou Xiaoxiao, chief editor of the drama, says her goal is for the show to resonate with the memories of older generations, while simultaneously helping the younger generation comprehend an era where warmth and challenges coexisted.
"This isn't a documentary series, so it's impractical to comprehensively delve into every historical nuance. Nevertheless, the destinies and fluctuations of the characters undoubtedly stand as the era's most compelling testimony," she says.
"The Youth Memories serves as a poignant bridge in this regard. The personal growth that Xiao Chunsheng and his cohort of young individuals undergo throughout their journey resonates with the evolving times, encapsulating a condensed path of life."
Director Fu Ning has crafted numerous TV series that unfold in the heart of Beijing. Raised in the Beijing hutong, Fu maintained a profound connection to the core narrative and the atmospheric backdrop of the depicted era in this drama.
With a stringent approach, he ensured authenticity in shaping the essence of the story and the period ambiance, striving to present a genuine portrayal of 1970s Beijing through his lens.
Yang Xiaopei, general producer of the TV series, has served as the executive producer for several renowned dramas including Legend of Fuyao, Ancient Love Poetry and Who Rules The World. The Youth Memories marks her debut in the realm of realistic historical dramas.
According to Yang Xiaopei, this drama delves into discussions on themes such as love, friendship, dreams and faith through a youthful lens, with its creative exploration that touches upon every facet of characters' lives.
"I think the drama has the capacity to resonate with audiences across different age groups," Yang Xiaopei says.
As per Yang Xiaopei's explanation, the crew meticulously studied the daily habits of individuals living in Beijing during that period to capture authentic details in props, including practices like winter cabbage storage, burning coal balls, and the presence of street vendors selling sugarcoated hawthorn.
In terms of costume design, items like batwing sleeves, bell-bottom pants, scarves and headbands authentically recreate the ambiance of that era.
To recreate the Shichahai ice rink of the 1970s, the team crafted detailed blueprints, and ultimately enclosed an area exceeding 10,000 square meters.
Yang Xiaopei highlights the involvement of over 100 members from skating clubs who served as extras. As the machines operated, they glided naturally, infusing the entire scene with a profound sense of authenticity.
This was not just a leisurely pursuit or hobby but a genuine reflection of the lifestyle of Beijing residents during that era, she says.
Young actors' ambitions
The series unfolds over a span of 30 years, requiring each key actor to navigate three decades of character development. The main cast delivers a compelling performance that leaves the audience thoroughly satisfied.
During casting, Yang Xiaopei emphasized her willingness to provide opportunities for young actors, but she steadfastly avoided relying solely on popularity. She placed greater importance on the suitability of the role and the actor's genuine passion for the character.
Xiao Chunsheng's character is played by actor Xiao Zhan. Yang believes that Xiao Zhan shares commonalities with the role in both image and character.
"They both exude optimism, sincerity, uprightness and the courage to confront challenges. When combined with Xiao Zhan's profound understanding and portrayal of the character, he can be deemed the ideal choice to bring Xiao Chunsheng to life," Yang Xiaopei says.
"The integrity, kindness and sense of justice that define Xiao Chunsheng harmonize seamlessly with Xiao Zhan's simplicity and sincerity. Moreover, in terms of appearance, Xiao Zhan's stature and posture perfectly suit the role," Yang Xiaopei comments, adding that Xiao Zhan even sought out a teacher to learn the Beijing dialect.
Zhou acknowledges the outstanding performances delivered by the entire main cast. "Li Qin's portrayal of Tong Xiaomei also stands out. She is an exceptionally thoughtful actor, meticulously considering whether each plot point aligns with Tong's character, and whether it is within her capabilities to portray them." Zhou says.
"Of course, this extends to Liu Ruilin, Cao Feiran and the other young actors who, to my pleasant surprise, shone brightly. Everyone surpassed expectations, delivering performances that were truly exceptional."
Cao, 28, portrays the character of He Hongling, who shares numerous emotional scenes with Xiao Chunsheng in the drama.
Reflecting on the filming experience, Cao mentions that Xiao Zhan, with his extensive acting background, often provided valuable assistance on set. "If I did something well, he would point it out, enhancing my confidence in the process of shaping the character," she notes.
As both Cao and Xiao Zhan fully embraced their respective roles, spontaneous dialogue between them became a common occurrence on set.
Cao perceives He as a radiant, goal-driven individual with ambitions. However, influenced by her family background and the era's milieu, He is also a complex, self-interested individual living in the present, Cao adds.
In preparation for her role, Cao learned the violin and how to ice skate before joining the production. Additionally, she sought insights into the emotional experiences of individuals from that era by consulting her parents. "My parents mentioned that emotions during that time were relatively straightforward and pure."
Cui Hang, 34, delivers a compelling performance as Chen Hongjun, the close companion of Xiao Chunsheng. Successfully overcoming the challenges of the college entrance exams, Chen gains admission to university, and eventually becomes ensnared in the tumultuous currents of power, while ultimately landing in prison.
Before delving into this role, Cui took the time to thoroughly understand the character, charting the logical progression of changes in Chen's journey.
Throughout the series, Chen's glasses change three times, with each pair symbolizing a significant shift in identity, status and mindset.
From glasses mended with tape, to the pair gifted by Ye Fang so he could focus on preparing for the college entrance exams, to the gold-rimmed glasses worn after ascending in rank. Cui explains that the prop was chosen to signify changes in his character's social standing and mindset.
In the final office scene, Cui devised a meaningful gesture. He meticulously straightens the national emblem on his cap, wipes it clean, and then places the hat on the table, simultaneously removing his glasses.
"This is a farewell to his mistakes of the past," Cui explains.
Spanning 30 years, Chen's narrative presented a unique challenge for Cui, marking his first portrayal of a character with such a broad age range. Despite the inherent challenges, Cui found the experience immensely gratifying.
"The set design instantly transported us to an era half a century ago as soon as we arrived. The props, hats, scarves โ€” everything belonged to that specific period. As actors, it was effortless to immerse ourselves in our roles," Cui says.
In the series, the character of Ye, Chen's wife in the drama, is brought to life by Beijing native Zhao Xin, who was profoundly captivated by Ye's personality when delving into the character's background.
"I find this girl incredibly intriguing. In that era, how could there be such an intelligent and clearheaded young lady? She is remarkably perceptive and forthright," Zhao says.
Ye earned the endearing nickname "prophet" from the audience, due to the character's accurate prediction of the reinstatement of the college entrance exam. Zhao believes that Ye's popularity is attributed to the fact that contemporary young women exhibit a strong sense of independence, and they can connect with Ye on a personal level.
"I've learned valuable lessons from the character. She possesses a profound pursuit of ideals and approaches situations with a highly rational mindset," she says.

I'm feeling like doing a public service today, so if you want to watch the mess that is Fighting for Love for Wang RuiChang or because of two women get married for plot reasons, I got the what to skip for you since I was stupid enough to watch the whole thing
For starting out: This drama is about Mai (Zhang TianAi), who is a poor orphan who wants to avenge her parents, living in Shengdu, the capital of Nanxia. She watched them get killed by henchmen and her adoptive brother Chen Qi 9 years ago. To move freely in the world, she disguised herself as a man since then. My Drama List is not representing her life well since she is in fact not roaming the martial arts world when we meet her but doing petty crime to fund her life and revenge quest. For plot reasons she saves the life of male lead Shang YiZhi (Zhang HaoWei), a silly son of a Marquis. He invites her to stay at his house where he sees her back when she takes a bath and finds out that she is actually a woman because heavens beware of a man falling in love with another man. He doesn't tell anyone that she's female though so it's funny to see people react to him being overly protective of Mai. (Seriously the amount of times his attendant steps out when those two hang out. Mu Bai is an ally)
His father, a general, dies from a bad medicine prescription upon returning from the border. His mother is the sister of the emperor and fears for his life so she uses her sisterly influence to send YiZhi to the border to take over his father's army. We also find out that his mother is actually his aunt because he is the son of the late crown prince. This is why the emperor wants to kill him, though he doesn't know his real identity. See the emperor is a paranoid cuckoo bananas dude and likes to have cleavage and dance and get people killed and look at the sun through his fingers.
Also for all the things this drama probably cut to get to the 36 episodes they really HAD TO keep in every time the 700 sliding doors between his living and office quarters are opened and closed to emphasize how removed from the world he is. The things those sliding doors operators have seen!
Meanwhile Mai travels to a border city to meet a man who knows where Chen Qi is. To get into the border city, she steals a passport from Chang YuQing (Wang RuiChang) who is from the enemy country Beimo and happens to be on a spy mission.
So if you only watch for Wang RuiChang, enter at episode 3 at 35:00.
But be warned, his character is minor and if there was ever any more backstory to him shot to explain his motivations, his sworn brotherhood with Cui Yan and the trouble of the Chang family at the court of Beimo or why Chen Qi hates the Chang family, it was all cut (or I already forgot about it). I told you this drama is a mess.
Tumblr media
This is also a good time for the people who want to watch for the two women getting married (spoiler alert: it's one sided love and a marriage to proof that Mai is a man) because YuQing and his army sack the city and this is when Mai rescues teenager Xiu'er (Jiang YunXi) as a promise to a prison guard. Xiu'er got a crush on her and has no clue that Mai is a woman until they get engaged. For Mai she is someone who needs to be protected and she wants to marry her off to her bestie before.
Tumblr media
Also pictured next to Mai feminist icon Tang ShaoYi a true dage who got no problem with Mai being in the army once he finds out and just wants to be bros with her.
Mai finds out that Chen Qi is actually the marshal of the Beimo army that is attacking Nanxia's border so she decides to enlist to fight him on the battlefield. Her father actually taught her battle tactics and she read the art of war so obviously she rises through the ranks despite going absent without leave and other things that would get you executed if the general of the army wasn't in love with you.
Plot (which I won't spoil) that includes Wang RuiChang sometimes more and often less happens until ep 22, when Yizhi gets summoned back to the capital and Mai joins him with his other trusted guys and Xiu'er (she is an afterthought mainly). This is also when the screenwriters or the editors lost any interest in Beimo apart from some captive prince stuff, so if you are only watching for Wang RuiChang you can skip ahead after his (great) scene in ep 22.
In Shengdu too much time is spent on Yizhi and his court stuff, like I want this to be about Mai doing cool army stuff not some badly written and edited succession to the throne plot. She does use her plotting skills for him to survive because dude is a silly jerk who is not worthy of her and yet she loves him. sigh.
queer intermission
Due to something that happened before ep 22 the rumor that Mai is a woman spreads in her army causing unrest which leads to Xiu'er proposing marriage to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(THEY NEVER SHOW THE ACTUAL DIVORCE???)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is shampoo commercial territory. Just that for censorship reasons Xiu'er emphasizes that Mai is too important for the army and therefore the whole country to get executed just for being a woman and also she still owes her for saving her life back in the day.
Tang dage gets it with her reasoning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're having the cross-cupped wine on camera but not the bowing to heaven, parents and each other to not piss off the censors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once they are in the bridal chamber/tent someone spies on them and sees Mai without her binder so he gets killed. End of wedding. Why is Xiu'er in the army camp in the first place? During the border defense arc she heard that Mai got wounded and went to tend to her and never left.
Xiu'er is plot relevant again in ep 32 and is in the final episode but apart from that she is little more than Mai's attendant.
Tumblr media
Mai continues to wear male attire most of the time, after she stopped being undercover, apart from the time she actually had to be in the harem and hated it.
end of intermission
ok back to the Wang RuiChang scenes
What is relevant for getting what is going on once you jump back in:
Yizhi's mother didn't go through hiding Yizhi from the emperor for Yizhi to not become emperor so she throws him into the struggle for the throne against his will. He does not want to do that and just be with Mai. (the good old putting the greater good above ones personal desires it never gets old. Of course his mother wins by guilt tripping him into becoming emperor by getting herself killed.) People get kidnapped, people get killed. Mai becomes the master of the emperor's grandson.
Yizhi's mother had made an agreement with the prime-minister that he would help Yizhi to the throne and in turn Yizhi would marry his daughter further increasing the prime-minister's influence in court. (like me you will think dude you are already having the highest office under the emperor what is your deal, well he wants his family to be the rulers of Nanxia eventually. dude likes to draw tigers in his spare time so you know his deal)
So who do we need to show up? Yuqing! So Mai can be implicated as a Beimo spy by the prime-minister. Luckily Yizhi had killed Yuqing's sworn brother earlier on so Yuqing had a reason to sneak into Shengdu to make an attempt on Yizhi's life at the beginning of episode 30 (it was only 8 episodes without him but it felt like eons).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We do get a little of him being cheeky in ep 31
Tumblr media
He leaves in ep 31 and shows up again in ep 35 (starting ~min 15) and 36.
ep 31-35 So after Yizhi married the prime-minister's daughter and she becomes empress, Mai was devastated and went on a bender. The prime-minister turns the court against Mai so she loses her general job. She asks Yizhi for the mansion of her father and lives there, wallowing in lovesickness, grief and childhood trauma until Yizhi sends the edict to make her his honored imperial consort. She reluctantly lives in the harem but hates being locked up (she is a general gdi), dealing with the jealous empress and also refuses Yizhi so they strike a deal that allows her to live outside. More palace stuff happens with the prime-minister.
When the Beimo army invades again, she is the most capable to do it, so she gets her army back and sets off to fight against Beimo in episode 35.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think there must have been more filmed and then cut for length because some things are alluded too that would have required some scenes beforehand. Ultimately this drama feels rather lifeless and is just going through the motions apart from some characters adding some sparkle.
The ending does make sense, gotta love that she didn't let herself get locked up in the harem for that loser.
Tumblr media
I need to stop watching ascending to the throne dramas that are not well written, why do I keep doing this to myself? Oh right, because I thought that this would be about a female general and ignored that he is the son of the legitimate crown prince. Of course he had to become emperor xP

Flavia Franco ********************** The history of the befana begins in the mists of time and descends from pre-Christian magical traditions. The term โ€œBefanaโ€ derives from the Greek โ€œEpiphanyโ€, meaning โ€œapparitionโ€ or โ€œmanifestationโ€. The Befana is celebrated, therefore, on the day of the Epiphany, which usually closes the Christmas holiday period. The Befana is usually represented by an old lady with a long nose and a pointed chin, who traveling far and wide on a broomstick, she brings gifts to all the children. On the night between the 5th and 6th of January, in fact, under the weight of a bag full of toys, chocolates and sweets (on the bottom of which a good dose of ash and coal is never missing), the Befana flies over the roofs and, lowering herself from the chimneys, she fills the stockings left hanging by the children. These, for their part, prepare for the good old lady, in a plate, a mandarin or an orange and a glass of wine. The next morning, in addition to the gifts and the coal for those who have been a little more naughty, the children will find the meal consumed and the footprint of the hand of the Befana on the ash scattered on the plate.Originally the Befana was a symbol of the new year passed, a year now old just like the Befana herself. The gifts that the old lady brought were auspicious symbols for the year that would begin. Flavia Franco

Ciao!
To start with, after a few jokes, she says that mentally we are stuck into the 5th century bc. In fact, as a philosopher back then, men (mankind) believe that everything that exists is for them. She then compares the word uomo (man) with donna (woman): in Italian "uomo" can be used both for mankind and male/masculine gender. So she asks "why man? (perchรฉ uomo?), we could say human kind or human animal" and states we're animals as well. We also have our DNA for the 70% similar to bananas and for the 98% to monkeys and primates in general (other jokes in between).
(I think this is the point of your question but anyway let me know) As humans, since we speak languages to communicate (while other animals/plants have other methods), we feel superior. And she basically says: "that's the same feeling that we Sicilian people have when someone from the North (Milan/Piedmont...) comes to Sicily, we speak to them in Sicilian and if that person doesn't understand we think that they're stupid: but it's not so, this person speaks another language. So we keep repeating the same sentence in Sicilian hoping the northerner will understand suddenly". She adds a sample sentence in Sicilian (don't ask me to write it cause I have no clue I speak another language as she said but it could be something like "cuccu cammini co' e arance 'n terra" BUT IDK what I did for sure I wrote it wrong) and says: "Even if we translated this sentence, it has no meaning anyway" and then asks Giletti (tv host, from Biella, Piedmont) to translate it (he asks for help to someone near him). She explains that sentence: "cu ccu" are two words that have different meaning just to confuse everyone better, and they mean "with whom" (con chi) and asks Giletti to repeat to help him learn Sicilian. The sentence translated sounds like "Con chi cammini con le arance che stanno per terra?" (with whom you walk with the oranges that are on the ground?). And indeed generally has no meaning but for Palermitani (people from Palermo), it means "with whom you walk with oranges that are fallen cause are rotten" -> who do you hang out with, rotten oranges = bad people? So she adds "It's pretty complex to get and one can understand it only if they have done a thesis on Camilleri (famous Sicillian author/writer who created Il Commissario Montalbano), but even with this background, we say that that person from the North is stupid".
She goes back speaking about the other ways of communication that plants and animals use and focuses on baboons that in order to cheer each other, they squeeze each other's... masculine genitals. "They acquire all the infos they need through that 'it's young' 'they will collaborate' (adds more fun stuff)". Then speaks about ants (formiche tagliafoglie= cutleaves?), and adds they're the smarter of all: "they pick up seeds as we used to do and have huge nests in which they cultivate mushrooms. They have been farming for 50 millions of years and didn't ruin anything we've been farming for 10.000 and have destroyed our planet. They were here when there were dinosaurs and survived the meteorite". So she says "Let's copy them, how does their society works? They're basically all female with a "mother queen" and a bunch of males. The "mother queen" decides the gender of the new borns and it's basically all females, except for a male or so every year for continuing the specie and nothing else." She adds a bunch of fun notes on this, how useful it is for them when it comes to exes and how happy male ants may be. "On the contrary, human animals prefer power ON other humans, men, women, childeren, nature... I like power too, but power OF laughing, making people laugh, dressing how I want, dancing on the street even if I embarass my daughter..." and ends by saying something like "if some stories/situations are still present maybe it's not time to ignore them and move on".
:)

The rain beat down against his office window. The room was dark, only illuminated by a soft glow from the desk lamp. It was his turn to work the night shift, but he expected things to go rather smoothly.
A soft vibration from his pocket caught his attention. Had something happened at home? Pulling it out, he glanced at the number but didn't recognize it. He quickly swiped up to answer.
"Hello?"
"Hey, it's me," a soft voice he did recognize came through on the other line. His brows raised in shock, he hadn't heard from her in a while. Before he could ask, she continued, "I just wanted to let you know, as per our deal, that I'm moving again."
Ah. That explained the late-night call. "Really? Where to this time?"
"Some tiny town in the pacific northwest." He could feel her tension over the call, how hesitant she was to say anything to him even though she was required to. "I'm also going back to my actual name. I think it's been long enough."
"You could always go back to the name you had when you lived with me?" he suggested, knowing it would help her relax some if she could snap at him and let some of that tension out.
"Not a chance."
He understood why she was upset, he did, but it was nearly a century ago. "How long are you going to be angry with me?"
"Forever," she snapped again, then let a breath out. At least he was right, she sounded a bit more natural now. "Anyways, that's all I needed to tell you, soโ€”"
"Wait a second," he cut her off before she could hang up on him.
"What?"
"What's the name of the town you're moving to?"
"Forks," she answered curtly. "It's in Washington state, in the United States." He already knew that, there was only one place in the world that could be described as pacific northwest, and he figured she knew that he knew. It was just how she talked with him, ever since that day so long ago.
"Okay," he said, gentle with her as ever, "thank you for telling me." The line went dead after that.
He didn't bother saving the number; he had kept his the same for decades now, so she could get ahold of him when she needed to. He placed his phone down on his desk and looked out the hospital window at the pine trees and parked cars down below.
Despite himself, Namjoon caught himself smiling in his reflection. "Things are about to get a lot more interesting around here."
