CW and Phone.

3. Entry categories:

SOAB–MIX – Single Op, All Bands, MIXED

SOAB–MIX-LP – Single Op, All Bands, MIXED, Low Power 100 watts

SOAB-MIX-QRP – Single Op, All Bands, MIXED, QRP 5 watts

SOAB–CW – Single Op, All Bands, CW

SOAB–CW–LP – Single Op, All Bands, CW, Low Power 100 watts

SOAB–SSB – Single Op, All Bands, SSB

SOAB–SSB-LP – Single Op, All Bands, SSB, Low Power 100 watts

SOSB – Single Op, single band, MIXED (6 different band entries, separately 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10 m)

MOST – Multi Op, All Bands, Single transmitter, MIXED

MO2T – Multi Op, Two transmitters, MIXED

MM – Multi Op, Multi transmitters, MIXED

SWL – MIXED

3.1 The participant can operate and submit the log for two different single band categories to be eligible for awards, for instance, 10m and 80m as per 11.3.

3.2 SOSB entrants may operate on other bands during the contest and are encouraged to submit their entire logs to help in the log cross-checking process. These contacts will not affect the SOSB score but will be credited to other stations.

3.3 Results will be listed separately for European Russia, Asiatic Russia and by each continent.

4. Intentionally left blank

5. General Rules 5.1. All transmitters, receivers, and amplifiers must be within a single 500-meter diameter circle. Antennas must be physically connected by RF transmission lines to the transmitters and receivers, except as described in 5.1.5.

5.1.1. Remote operation is permitted if the physical location of all transmitters, receivers, and antennas are at one station location as described in 5.1. A remotely operated station must obey all station license, operator license, and category limitations. The call sign used must be one issued or permitted by the Regulatory Authority of the station location.

5.1.2. The use of QSO finding assistance (DX cluster, CW Skimmer etc) is allowed for all entries.

5.1.3. The use of any calls other than participant’s for any reason including keeping the run frequency on any band, making schedules, DX-spotting, moving the multipliers is prohibited.

5.1.4. Self-spotting or soliciting contacts by any means other than amateur radio is prohibited.

5.1.5. The use of one and only one remote receiver located within 25 kilometers of the main transmitter site is permitted, in addition to the receiver at the transmitter site is allowed for all entries.

5.1.6. The use of any remote receivers other than described in 5.1.5 are prohibited. Violators will be subject to disqualification.

5.2. Single Operator participants may change bands and modes without restrictions. Only one signal can be transmitted at any given time.

5.2.1. Single Operator categories: one person (the operator) performs all operating, logging and spotting functions. Any assistance will result in reclassification into the Multi Operator category or disqualification at the discretion of the contest committee.

5.3. MOST stations are subject to a 10 minutes band change rule. Mode change within current band is allowed without limitations.

5.3.1. Start time is determined by the time of the first QSO made on the band. The band may be changed after 10 full minutes have elapsed.

5.3.2. Only one signal can be transmitted at any given time. Exception: two signals on two different bands are allowed if (and only if) the station on another (and only one) “multiplier” band works a new multiplier.

5.3.3. The “multiplier” transmitter is subject to its own 10 minute rule for band changes as described in 5.3.1.

5.3.4. Contacts which violate band change rules, should be clearly marked in the log with an X-QSO: key (as per 11.11 ). They will neither be counted nor penalized for an entrant, but will be counted for the station contacted.

5.3.5. Tampering with the QSO time to comply with the 10 minute rule (“rubber clocking”) will result in disqualification.

5.4. MO2T (Multi Op, Two transmitters): A maximum of two transmitted signals at any time on different bands. Each transmitter may make a maximum of 8 band changes in any clock hour (00 through 59 minutes). For example, a change from 40 meters to 80 meters and then back to 40 meters constitutes two band changes. Both transmitters may work any and all stations. A station may be worked twice per band (CW and SSB) regardless of which transmitter is used.

5.5. MM (Multi Op, Multi transmitters): A maximum of six transmitted signals, one per band at any one time. All equipment (transmitters, receivers, amplifiers, antennas, etc.) must be located in same DXCC entity, including remotely controlled equipment. Six bands may be activated simultaneously. Use a separate serial number sequence for each band. Limits in 5.1 do not apply.

5.6. All MIXED categories entrants can work the same station twice per band (CW and SSB).

6. Exchange: 6.1. Non-Russian stations: signal report + QSO number, starting with 001.

6.2. Multioperator (MOST, MO2T, MM) may alternativley use separate serial numbers for each band.

6.3. Russian stations: signal report + oblast code as per attached list.

7. QSO Points. 7.1. Russian stations:

QSO with your own country (Russia on your continent) – 2 points,

QSO with Russia on another continent – 5 points,

QSO with a different country on your continent – 3 points,

QSO with another continent – 5 points.

7.2. Non-Russian stations:

QSO with Russian station – 10 points,

QSO with your own country – 2 points,

QSO with a different country on your continent – 3 points,

QSO with another continent – 5 points.

7.3. Kaliningrad (UA2F), Franz Josef Land (RI1FJ) and Russian Antarctic stations (RI1AN) each count as a separate DXCC entity and a separate Oblast (double multiplier) with Kaliningrad counts as European Russia for scoring purposes.

7.4. Maritime mobile (“/MM”) stations do not count as multipliers and score 5 points for all participants.

7.5. SWL points are calculated along the same principles as described in 7.1 and 7.2.

8. Dupes 8.1. Dupes are contacts made with the same station on the same band and mode. If the first contact between stations is valid, dupes have 0 points value. If the first contact is not valid, then second (dupe) contact is accepted.

8.2. Dupe contacts are not penalized; they do not have to be marked in the log. All entrants are strongly recommended to leave DUPES in the log.

9. Multipliers There are two types of multipliers:

One multiplier for each different oblast contacted on each band, including UA2F, RI1FJ and RI1AN as per 7.3.

One multiplier for each different country (DXCC entity list + WAE multipliers list) contacted on each band.

10. Final Score 10.1. The final score is the result of the total QSO points multiplied by the sum of oblast and country multipliers.

11. General Log Submission Requirements 11.1. Logs are accepted in CABRILLO file format only.

11.2. Filename of your log should be yourcall.log or .cbr. Example: UA1AAA.log.

11.3. If a competitor claims two separate bands in the SOSB category (as per 3.1 ) these two bands should be clearly marked. Example: CATEGORY-BAND: 10m, 15m.

11.4. Russian stations will include their RDA in the LOCATION: field.

11.5. Web upload is the only method of log submission. Web upload of logs is available at: http://www.rdxc.org/asp/pages/wwwlog.asp.

11.6. All QSO times must be in UTC.

11.7. All sent and received exchanges must be clearly shown in the log.

11.8. The header of the electronic log must specify entry category and your full mailing address to receive the awards.

11.9. Multioperator logs (MOST and MO2T) must identify which transmitter made each QSO. For MOST entries RUN =0, MULT =1. For MO2T entries RUN1 = 0, RUN2 = 1. Alternative identifcation is not allowed. The logs without such identification will be reclassified to Check Log.

11.10. Logs aiming for the top 3 position in any contest category (excluding SWL entry) must indicate the frequency of every QSO made (using transceiver CAT) with a minimum resolution of 1 kHz.

11.11 Any QSO marked with the key X-QSO: will be ignored in your log and credit will be given to the other station.

12. Log Submission Deadline 12.1. Logs must be submitted to the contest sponsors within 14 days after the end of the contest (until 23:59 UTC on 04.04.2021).

12.2. Receipt of the log is confirmed on the “Logs received” page on RDXC Website.

12.3. Logs submitted after the deadline may be listed in the results, but are not eligible for awards.

13. Awards 13.1. pecial plaques for continental winners in the SOAB-MIX and SOAB-MIX-LP. For the complete list of sponsored plaques please visit http://www.rdxc.org/asp/pages/trophy.asp.

13.2. Every participant from Russia will receive a souvenir subject the terms below:

All-band entries confirmed at least confirmed 1,000 QSOs,

Single-band entries confimed at least confirmed 500 QSOs,

MIX-QRP entry confirmed at least confirmed 250 QSOs.

13.3. European participants will receive a souvenir for at least 750 confirmed QSOs with the Russian stations.

13.4. Non-European participants will receive a souvenir for at least 250 confirmed QSOs with the Russian stations.

13.5. All participants who have submitted the log will receive PDF participation certificates.

14. Contest-Related Information 14.1. Every participant who sends his electronic log will receive personal UBN-list with his claimed/confirmed results separately by bands/modes and QSO list, containing his errors and errors of worked stations. Confirmed Oblasts list for “Russia” award will be sent separately.

14.2. Russian Disctricts Award (RDA). All confirmed QSOs with the Russian stations will be atomatically accepted by the RDA without paper QSLs.

14.3. Any RDXC related questions should be sent to e-mail [email protected].

15. Judging The Russian DX Contest Committee is responsible for checking and adjudicating the contest entries which is done electronically. Participants are requested to follow the rules and best amateur radio practices. Violation of the rules of the contest or unsportsmanlike conduct may lead to disciplinary action by the Committee in its sole discretion.

16. Penalties Penalties are worth two times the QSO point value for the contact.

16.1. Penalty is appllied if:

incorrectly logged calls (Bad Call);

incorrectly logged exchange numbers;

16.2. QSO neither counted nor penalized for the following:

QSO time difference of more than 3 minutes (except systematic computer errors);

QSO bands or modes difference (except systematic computer errors);

10 minute rule violation for MOST (as per 5.3.1 and 5.3.3 above);

Band change violation for MO2T (as per 5.4).

16.3. The log will be reclassified into Check Log in case of more than 50% score reduction after checking.

16.4. RDXC Contest Committee decisions are final.

Magic Plants

Hi guys! I wanted to share with you a few flowers and plants that I found in my parent’s backyard. I collected a few samples, couldn’t resist. Long post with pictures

So my mom has this stone kid, lol. She calls him “Hugo” like the 1969 movie “The book of stone” maybe he’s the reason her garden is so pretty and full of magical properties haha. Have you seen the movie? It’s actually pretty creepy.

Nevertheless, I made some research about all of the plants and found some amazing properties in each. I want to share this post with you, because maybe you also have this plants in your backyard or near your home, and you don’t really know you can use them in your craft.

TI PLANT

Originally called “Ki” was a sacred plant to the Hawaiian God, Lono, and the Goddess of the Hula, Laka. It meant “divine power”, and later on was recalled “Ti Plant”. Legend has it, it’s also the incarnation of Apollo. This plant releases positive energy, brings luck, happiness and resists evil souls and spirits. That’s why many people decide to have them in their homes.

CROSSANDRA

One of the most chosen variety flowers for folk medicine. Is a well known medicinal plant in various religions in India. It has amazing healing properties. You can use it for fever, headaches, physical wounds, and overall pain. Use it in your craft to attract health. Also you can use it in potions.

CROWN OF THORNS

Don’t let this beautiful and attractive to the eye flower fools you, it’s highly toxic and dangerous. It comes in a variety of colors. Its milky juice contains a toxin called “Phorbol Easter” which can irritate skin and cause severe stomach pain if it has contact with the skin. It might cause vision loss or even blindness if it reaches your eyes. Many believe that its thorns were used to make the crown made by the Romans to Jesus. You can use this plant in shadow work or in directed spells and rituals. Just remember being careful. Keep your pets away from it.

GOLDEN DEWDROPS

Many believed this grass weed was useless, until it bloomed. Its name was given thanks to the beautiful grapes and flowers that blooms from it. Under the sunlight they have a glittery and translucent color like dewdrops. As it belongs to the family of Vervain, the Golden Dewdrops symbolizes evil and witchcraft. Both, flowers and leaves can be used in talismans and amulets to bring protection and peace. Also it’s perfect for rituals.

PETRA CROTON

As most of their family, the Croton is a toxic plant for humans and animals when ingested, tho is not the most poisonous. Got its name thanks to the variety of foliage it has in nature. It’s used in gardens, bedrooms, hotels, and many places to bring color and life to a space. It was once used as a purgative plant, tho nowadays it’s mostly used aesthetically. It represents change, and new beginnings. You can use it in spells, talismans or amulets. Don’t eat it.

FIRECRACKER PLANT

Its tubular, most commonly red, flowers give it its name. Making it showy and appealing to humans. It grows and expands as rapidly as Bamboo, so keep in mind your garden space. It attracts bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. It was used by Native Americans to treat spider and snake bites, stomach pain, backache, and burns. As it represents life and growth, you can use it to attract not only those properties, but also healing.

MADAGASCAR PALM

At least 12 species of palms were used in African medicinal and spiritual rituals over the years. The seeds are used as oracles, the leaves and flowers as offerings. In other cases the extracted oil was used as a healing mixture. As many believe, when a person got sick, it wasn’t only a physical sickness, but more spiritually. It was related to witches, sorcerers, broken taboos, or displeased ancestors spirits or deities, so the palms where used to cleanse the spirit and alleviate the patient from the suffering. You can use seeds, flowers and leaves as oracles, offerings in your altars, or use them in rituals and spells to attract protection and spiritual healing.

AFRICAN VIOLET

The original seed was discovered in 1892 by German Baron Paul, in an African colony. He then sent it to Germany where first appeared in a flower show and recalled as one of the most interesting plants. Part of the succulent family it helps purify indoor air quality, improving one’s mood and relieving stress. It was used in traditional herbal incense. You can use it in talismans and amulets to bring protection and promote spirituality. Or in spells and rituals. Won’t recommend ingesting it tho.

XANADU

Many humans are attracted to this plant because of the odd shape of its leaves, but be careful it’s another toxic plant, tho much more less. It’s commonly known as “Little Angel” and believe it’s a fairy. Its vivid and lively leaves, bring happiness and joy to a home and its fairy spirit causes a romantic and poetic soul. Use it in your craft for romantic spells or amulets. Remember not to eat it.

BRAZILIAN JOYWEED

Also called “Ruby Leaf”, “Bloodleaf” or “Metal Weed”. Another amazing medicinal plant used during centuries. This Joyweed is known in Brazil as Penicillin, go figure. It grows easily in dry and deforested soil. It’s commonly used against inflammation, cough, and diarrhea. You can use it in your spells, and potions to attract health.

FALSE HEATHER

Also know as “Mexican heather” or “Elfin Herb”, this type of Heather does not relate to the Scotch common one you probably know. Its name comes precisely from that, imitating the Heather. By itself, the False Heather has amazing antioxidant healing properties, it has been used to treat high cholesterol, or colds and chills by tea infusions. Many believe it has antitumor and anti cancerous spread properties. It also brings good luck, admiration and solitude. You can use it in potions, talismans or amulets to attract not only those properties but also health.

Critiques It’s hard to go beyond this point explaining Danganronpa

Byakuya's voice actor is better than his entire character. Ah yes, the first Dangan Discourse: Team Leon or Sayaka? Sayaka was willing to betray Makoto's trust for her own gain, but this is also the same girl who had devoted her entire life to and constructed her entire identity around her career. Monokuma wasnt just threatening her friends, he was threatening her entire world. She implies that she'd already suffered enough to get to this point in her career, but she was willing to do it because it was her life and her world and her dream. And she never even got to learn that the whole class dies if they get the killer wrong, so all she probably felt she had to do was sacrifice one individual who seemed to be going nowhere anyway, a punk who took his talent and his immense luck for granted. And while it is true that Leon most likely came back to kill Sayaka after having already shaken her off, his FTEs show clear signs of paranoia and anxiety about the entire killing game to the point where he literally has a panic attack. Imagine being in his shoes when he suddenly got a note from the girl he was very clearly crushing on to come see her, the brief surge of joy and relief he must have felt that the one person he trusted was reaching out to him. And then, imagine those fleeting feelings of hope being immediately ripped away when that very person locked him in her room and made his worst nightmare a reality. I find it hard to believe that anyone in his shoes wouldn't have all but lost their mind at that point. Perhaps that's what Leon was talking about post-trial. They were probably both good kids, but they were also the weakest out of everyone and were kind of doomed to fail in a killing game environment. Tldr: Neither Leon nor Sayaka deserved to die and I dont understand why a majority of the fandom insists on picking sides.

One More Turn Of The Screw At Medium

Announced with fanfare a few days ago: Medium Seeks Partners to Launch New Publications. This is jaw-dropping considering how many pivots the company has undertaken, and how many 'partners' it has screwed over in the process.

Medium's current strategy seems to be growing into a media giant, like a redo of the old Huffington Post or Forbes, before those pubs chased away all the flakes. But in the meantime, they are attracting all the 'thought leaders' writing listcicles and self-help manifestos, and on top are trying to create their own 'publications' with paid writers.

The site is maddening, oversaturated, and terrible to navigate.

Sadly, many writers I know and admire write there.

I am involved in a new publishing venture (about which more later) and I had considered publishing it there, but I think I will go a different route. I don't believe Williams.

The NYTimes article was a Bittman puff piece with no discussion of the many pivots at Medium. And no mention of the departure of Hackernoon from Medium and Medium's efforts to screw them as they were moving.

For those who want to review the various zigs and zags in Medium's history, I recommend Medium's Mess: The rise and fall of the site that was supposed to save journalism by Katie Fustich. Here's one long excerpt:

In 2014 the company acquired and relaunched the digital magazine Matter as a general-interest publication with the goal of creating a home for “timely, original journalism that combines the reporting and scope of serious publications with the fun and intimacy of the social web.” Originally a subscription-funded, Kickstarter-launched science publication, Matter got a new editor-in-chief, the veteran GQ editor Mark Lotto, and became the mouthpiece of Medium itself, commissioning glossy, high-budget content that served as a tentpole for the platform. It published elaborate features like an account of lawyer Shannon Liss-Riordan’s 2015 lawsuit against Uber, as well as Awl-ish musings on neon signs, and an epically long essay on selfies. (Disclosure: Study Hall publisher Kyle Chayka was a contributor.) The aggressive editorial strategy nabbed Matter a National Magazine Award for Joshua Hammer’s long-form reporting on the Ebola crisis, making it the first digital publication to win the award.

In addition to re-launching Matter, Medium expanded its staff. The site raised $25 million and $57 million in 2014 and 2015, respectively, giving the company a $400 million valuation. Medium also continued to roll out new publications funded by its own capital as well as scattered ad deals, like Re:form, a design blog sponsored early on by BMW.

With a sleek publishing interface and shiny, award-winning content, Medium became an attractive publishing option for media newcomers and websites struggling to make it on their own in the digital platform era. In 2013, comics publisher The Nib launched with Medium under cartoonist Matt Bors, and in 2015, by-and-for women’s news site The Establishment set up shop. Smaller media companies like Pacific Standard, The Awl, and The Ringer also began using Medium’s platform as a content management system, in deals sweetened with guaranteed revenue from Medium’s inchoate ad operations. In 2016, Pacific Standard magazine editor-in-chief Nicholas Jackson gushed, “Moving to Medium was an obvious solution for what we wanted to do.”

But there were persistent tremors of uncertainty. In summer 2014, Medium announced it would be rolling out native ads and sponsored posts, finally answering the question of how the site planned to make money (Williams had previously stated that traditional banner ads would tarnish Medium’s aesthetic). In 2015 Matter began to slow down its publishing, and by 2016 it was crumbling, publishing its final post in November. The title relaunched as an independent media incubator-slash-studio that March, with funding from Williams himself and leadership by Lotto and his wife Hillary Frey, the former executive editor of Fusion (now executive editor at Huffington Post). Then the studio closed abruptly in January 2017 due to management issues, leaving writers with potential collaborative projects—book deals and film aspirations—in the lurch. The studio did, however, produce a trailer and swag for its rebrand logo.

Matter’s sudden shift coincided with the departure of Pacific Standard, The Ringer, and The Awl from the Medium platform. In May 2017, less than a year after joining Medium, Jackson was already explaining that Pacific Standard’s departure from Medium would allow it to increase subscriber growth and develop new features. The Awl departed several months later without much fanfare. During the week 15 – 19 February, the preparatory work for WRC-23 agenda item 9.1b continued in ITU‑R Working Party 4C (WP4C). The WRC agenda item has initiated technical studies on coexistence between the radio navigation satellite service (RNSS) and the amateur services in the 23cm band. As usual, the IARU participated in the meeting and delivered key information on amateur activities in this important microwave band. This information is vital to ensure the amateur services are realistically represented in the studies as they move forward.

It remains vital that national amateur communities present their views on the importance of this band to their national regulators in a consolidated and consistent manner.

To assist with this the IARU-R1 is developing supporting material that member societies can refer to when addressing the topic with their national regulator.

The work on this topic will continue throughout the year and beyond both in ITU‑R and in the regional telecommunications organisations and the IARU is committed to ensure every organisation understands the amateur position on this important microwave band.

ARRL CEO David Minster, NA2AA, will keynote the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo March 13 – 14 weekend. Minster’s talk — part of an 80+ speaker lineup — will begin at 2000 UTC (3 PM EST) on March 13. His appearance will highlight ARRL’s featured role at the Expo, which also will include “Ask The ARRL Lab.” ARRL is a QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo Partner.

Minster, who assumed the ARRL Headquarters leadership position last September, has launched major projects and assembled teams to foster innovation and individual skill development in radio technology and communications. In his keynote, Minster will share his enthusiasm for advancing amateur radio and highlight current ARRL initiatives to engage and inspire the current generation of hams. His presentation topics will include:

ARRL’s digital transformation, which promises to bring new value to ARRL members. An all-in digital approach will improve the way members access and engage with content, programs, and systems.

The ARRL Learning Center, a hub for members to discover the many facets of amateur radio and develop practical knowledge and skills.

Increasing video content, opening opportunities for amateur radio content creators and member-volunteers to learn, stay informed, and keep connected.

Improving training and tools to engage radio clubs, emergency communication volunteers, and students.

The ARRL Expo booth will feature “Ask the ARRL Lab,” where Lab staffers will answer questions live. Attendees can come into the booth lounge (featuring the Expo’s latest virtual meet-up and video technology), sit down at a virtual table, and ask ARRL Lab technical wizards for tips about projects or suggestions to address various station installations and problems. Attendees can also learn about Product Review equipment testing by the Lab, see a presentation on how the Lab can help hams with RFI problems, and tour W1AW — the Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station — virtually. ARRL booth staff will also point attendees to helpful resources from across membership benefits, services, and programs.

Representing the ARRL Lab will be Lab Manager Ed Hare, W1RFI; Test Engineer Bob Allison, WB1GCM; Senior Laboratory Engineer Zack Lau, W1VT; RFI Engineer Paul Cianciolo, W1VLF, and W1AW Station Manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q. Between all of them, they have over 100 years of experience at ARRL Headquarters,

QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo Chairman Eric Guth, 4Z1UG, also announced four live group kit-building workshops. Workshop instructors will guide participants through building a variety of kits, which will be available for purchase and delivered prior to the Expo so attendees can build them at home. Attendees unable to participate during the live sessions can order and build kits by watching the workshop videos during the on-demand period that follows the Expo through April 12.

Workshop kits prices range from $15 to $30. Early-bird discount tickets and links to purchase kits can be found at the QSO Today Expo website. These workshops will include:

Building the NS-40 QRP Transmitter, a 14-component, 5 W transmitter for 7.030 MHz (with instructors David Cripe, NM0S, and Virginia Smith, NV5F).

The Learn-to-Solder Workshop will introduce the basic tools and techniques of building electronic kits. Participants will build a 20-meter transmitter kit (with instructors Rex Harper, W1REX, and Stephen Houser, N1SH).

Building the Cric-Key, a simple CW keyer with paddle, suitable for home and field use (with instructor Joe Eisenberg, K0NEB).

The Mini-Sudden Receiver, a pocket-and-mint-tin friendly direct-conversion 20-meter receiver (with instructors Rex Harper, W1REX, and Stephen Houser, N1SH).

PIDP 3240 Assignment 1 Entry 2 Fair Dealings in the Classroom

Objective

In Canada fair dealing is a provision under the Copyright Act that provides that “it is not an infringement of copyright to deal with a work for the purposes of research, private study, criticism, review, news reporting, education, satire, and parody, provided the dealing is “fair””. (Noel & Snel, 2016.) Although fair dealing has been present in the Copyright Act since 1921 it “existed as an unused vestigial presence in the Copyright Act” and “in the absence of fair dealing in practice, the void was largely filled by copyright collective societies”. (Swartz, Ludbrook, Spong & Slaght, 2019.) In the early twenty-first century, copyright cases began to surface that tested the boundaries of fair dealings and “Canadian courts began to shift toward stronger user rights.” (Swartz, Ludbrook, Spong & Slaght, 2019.) Fast forward to 2011 and “the educational sector, including public junior, intermediate and senior schools, community colleges and universities, banded together and created a standard approach for using the fair dealing exception to communicate and reproduce, in paper or electronic form, short excerpts from a copyright-protected work to students for educational purposes”. (Swartz, Ludbrook, Spong & Slaght, 2019.) As there is still much uncertainty on how the copyright laws will change in the future, for now fair dealings is how most educators in Canada deliver information to learners respecting copyright laws and the creators’ dependant on that law. Upon research of copyright and fair dealing laws I find myself wondering how I can teach future stylists to protect their work and understand their rights as creators of their craft.

Reflective

When we take a look at fair dealing within education, not much information is given on how it concerns the hairstyling classroom outside of theory textbook use and like materials. In the hair classroom, each student receives original hard copies of theory text and workbooks from the publishers. Instructors seldomly stray from those materials unless they are using public or commercial material such as YouTube videos that display cutting or coloring techniques, or content that is provided directly from product manufacturers such as guides and instructions on either the products’ intended use or technique guidelines. Having worked in the hair industry as an active stylist I can attest to the concern among hairstylists in the protection of their work. In a blog by Daniel D. Stuhlman, catalogue librarian for Malcom X Collage in Chicago, IL states that “even if protection was claimed for the hairstyle, it would be hard to know exactly where the line is drawn for derivative, imitative, or parody styles which are allowed. Hair moves constantly and has no fixed form. One would have a hard time figuring out what is the fixed form. Would one hair in another place or a slightly different hair color qualify as a new work? There is no way to measure if the hair infringes on the first person’s claim.” (2011) I agree that the idea of copyright law applying to hairstyles is far-fetched however I can also see the need for protection on creators’ images of hair works they have done, given that the hair industry has laid strong roots in imagery within technology. Specifically, a huge online presence in social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Interpretive

The rules and guidelines concerning modern technology, images and other forms of media have been unclear. In a recent statutory review of the Copyright Act a recommendation set forth about technological protection states “that the Government of Canada examine measures to modernize copyright policy with digital technologies affecting Canadians and Canadian institutions, including the relevance of technological protection measures within copyright law”. (Ruimy, 2019) In today’s climate, it is apparent that change may be on the horizon when it comes to the modern technology shift and copyright laws of the twenty-first century. As there is hopeful sight for change in further defending creators’ works within multiple technology and media platforms like imagery, I think that instructors of the hair classroom, in the interim, need to utilize both fair dealings in their practice but also educate their learners on how to best protect their own creative and original works in our current copyright environment. An online Image protection platform called Pixsy released an informational piece on their website noting that “though it remains practically impossible to completely prevent image theft, there are a number of ways to minimize risk”. (unknown) The article goes on to describe 13 best practices in protecting images focusing on internet presence. These practices include watermarking images, use of copyright notice and digital signatures as well as multiple ways to adjust and format images to better protect against theft.

Decisional

“Since teachers use copyright-protected materials as well as educate the copyright owners and users of tomorrow, they have a unique responsibility to set the right example.” (Noel & Snel, 2016) It is easy to conclude that facilitating a deeper understanding of copyright and fair dealing in the classroom aids not only in the safeguard of existing works but fuels the growth of new. In my research, it is apparent that the laws surrounding copyright are not perfect, especially in a hairstyling world, and may never be. However, as an educator, I can offer my learners the best practices and tools available today to help protect their creative works, with a little less risk in the foreground. Currently, I teach a module within the hair program that encourages students to start off their professional social media platforms on the right foot. Pixsy’s guide to prevent image theft is a useful tool that I will integrate to enhance content and educate my learners about the importance of copyright and fair dealing laws and what that means to them as future stylists.
