With hope so fragile, so quiet and scared, that it's already long shattered. The pieces digging into her soft heart like fiberglass, hurting, aching, Uri doesn't want to take his hand.

She doesn't, but his hand is still held out, and his smile is so heartbreakingly gentle, so sincere, that Urisha can't help but grab onto it, with both of her hands, and squeeze, stumbling forward with wide eyes.

And, for the first time that she can really remember, someone catches her, pressing her close to their chest, arms wound tight, as though afraid she'd disappear, lips against her temple, and they whisper comfort into her ear with little hesitation.

Uri buries her nose in the crook of his neck, shoulders shaking as the first sob begins to make it's way out of her throat. Ugly and sharp, it's more a wail than anything else, but still... It's hers.

It's the first moment of the rest of her life, a new beginning, but, for the first hour or so, it feels so unbelievably unbearable that all Uri can bring herself to do is cry.

Hope has never felt so unimaginably painful before, and, she wonders, quietly, if this means she was ever really meant for it.

If it meant something as flawed and ugly as her deserved to exist, if something as beautiful as even hope could scare her into submission.

[Uri remembers the first, and only, time she went to her mother for anything resembling comfort, she remembers the pain it brought, the despair, the fear.

She remembers the burn of alcohol on the woman's breath, the dig of her nails, the venom in her voice. Uri remembers it as the only time the woman called her anything other than 'Girl' or 'Darling Urisha'.

She remembers the tears, hot and ugly that pricked her eyes after everything was said, after everything Alara told her, after being told she was nothing.

...Uri doesn't have many more memories of her mother after that incident, she doesn't think she'd want more if she's honest.]

(Uri loved Azazel as a child, so frighteningly innocent in her admiration and want to remain by his side.

Azazel had treated her more like a particularly amusing puppy, she realized now, and when she stopped amusing him he threw her to the side, uninterested in playing the father figure to a little girl who's only real achievement was being able to jury-rig rudimentary spells.)

{Uri thinks she might have been some sort of suicidal the first time she tried to kill Vali, tried to strangle him because he had made one too many tactless comments about how her sister put up more of a fight than she probably ever had.

She remembers tackling him to the ground, she remembers screaming and kicking, biting and scratching.

She remembers being thrown into the adjacent wall hard enough to leave an indent, she remembers diving for his throat not long after.

More than anything, Uri remembers that Vali's the only person who's never called her anything other than Uri, she also knows she's probably one of the only people who's wanted his head on a silver platter for anything other his title as Albion's champion.

Uri thinks she would have hated him for the simple fact that his mother loved him.}

"You can stay here for as long as you want," Nero offers, softly, fingers running through her hair with obvious affection, "for as long as you need, you don't have to hide, we won't hurt you."

Uri can only latch on tighter, bury herself deeper in his embrace as he quietly mumbles soothing words, sobs still wracking her small frame.

It doesn't escape her that he hasn't offered her a place in his Peerage, he's offering her genuine protection, an official education, something...

Maybe a family?

She... doesn't know how that works. Family. Not really.

Alara was a shit mother, always more obsessed with her status as the mother of the bastard Mammon, the useless little girl who hadn't brought her the protection and riches that her visions that said she would. The useless drunk of a Seer who hit and verbally tore apart little girls whenever she didn't get something she wanted.

Evectus was completely absent, wholed up in some mansion in the Underworld swearing beyond all reason that she deserved to have her head mounted on a pike for simply being born to a woman who was crazy enough to fuck him.

Azazel was interested in playing the role of a father for all of seven months before he found her rivalry, (Vali's childish want), with his actual investment more amusing. His words always lilted towards his own benefit, treating her more like a brainless puppy than someone with an actual self-worth beyond 'Please Love Me!' and all the bullshit that entailed.

Vali wanted just as many things from her as others, but his were always more personal, more hard-headed, less obvious, Vali wanted such childish things from her, such childish little things that... Uri sometimes, could entertain the idea of looking up to him as an older brother. Could sometimes allow herself to indulge in those childish wants when they still just... wants of a child, the bone crushing hugs, the assurance that someone cared about him beyond his status as a Longinus user, sleeping with someone who wouldn't leave as soon as morning came, who wouldn't use him for Albion.

[Uri could never quite bring herself to believe in things about people loving her beyond what she could bring to the table, could never quite find it in herself to look Vali in eye after one to many truths had been revealed.]

The Absurdity of Highschool DxD, Explained (by someone who's watched the show more times than can possibly be healthy)

The whole premise of the plot is that God Is Dead and so the world is sorta in No Rules Mode™. The reason the Three Factions come together is because with God being dead, they risk their domain over Earth being challenged by a third party that just attacks Heaven while they're weak.

To this end, as soon as the peace treaty is signed, the governments of Heaven and Hell suddenly become diplomatic entities with the other Pantheons, mainly because of the threat that the Khaos Brigade represents to EVERYONE with their trippple stacked dummy oatmeal thicc supercombo crossover nyan-powered GI Joe-lookin' ass Marine Marauders type spec-ops black-ops god-killing freak power team setup. Azazel and his Grigori are sorta subsumed under the authority of Sirzechs Lucifer (this use of Lucifer is a title, he's of the Gremory Clan), as the Governor-General is serving as personal mentor to the Heir-Apparent of the Throne of Hell. The non-Grigori Fallen Ones are just sort of treated as an errant and perennial nuisance that Azazel has mostly covered. Katerea, Shalba, and the rest of the Old Satan Faction are dead and the remaining Magicians are scattered. The Powers in the Domain of the God of The Bible (yes that's his canon name) are, at the current state of the canon, essentially a unified entity as far as any other Pantheons are concerned.

We know precisely how God died, too: the legendary dragons Ddraig and Albion. Those motherfuckers went so hard in the paint with each other that God himself became collateral damage.

Heaven's solution to this, of course, was to gang up on the dragons when they were too busy looking at each other and break them—and most of their relatives—up into pieces and seal them in the Sacred Gears. They can't kill them, since the dragons are pretty much on par with God as sort of "Primordial Powers," so this is the next best option. The Scared Gear system, itself a glitch in God's initial creation of mankind, was sort of a band-aid fix for Heaven, though. Humans are, themselves, inferior and limited in their ability to harness the full effect of the Sacred Gears, but the dragons inhabiting these Sacred Gears, the 13 Pieces of Longinus, in particular technically do have the power to Kill God:™. The trade for Heaven was:

PRO: Generally, wielders of Longinus pieces will not be able to make use of the full extent of the power, and the worst ones are essentially fated to kill each other because of this primordial Grudge that exists between many of the dragons. The vast majority of them will be relegated to important figures of human history (Jesus is said to have been a Sacred Gear user, note that what killed him was, within the canon of the story, True Longinus, the literal spear used to kill Jesus in the Bible (commentary on whether this confirms or denies Jesus as the Messiah is a conversation for another day)).

BUT

CON: You have to keep a fucking eye on the humans, though, because humans can Ascend (which occurs at the whims of and according to the rules of the Holy System, which is mostly frozen in the organizational state it was in when God died until the Brave Saints system is devised), be Reborn as Devils, or (very rarely) breed with them and the Fallen Ones and produce Overpowered Humans™ that can indeed pose a very real threat.

So for the most part, the Domain was stable for a millennium or three. However, suddenly, just as each of the Three Factions are barely recovered from the MASSIVE losses they all suffered during the War in Heaven, you have the following things happening in extreme concentration (one borough of the small city of Kuoh, Japan):

Vali Lucifer, last remaining member of the Lucifer Clan (and by corollary, the most valid claimant to the Throne of Hell), is discovered to be the wielder of Divine Dividing (Longinus 6) and therefore the current White Dragon Emperor. He teams up with,

Azazel, Governor-General of the Grigori, who is in the process of hoarding Sacred Gears for the purposes of creating an Artificial Longinus and also killing his most unstable lieutenant, Kokabiel, only to be doublecrossed when,

Bikou (descendant of Sun Wukong and current Moneky King), Kuroka (rogue cat-spirit uber-devil and Hell's Public Enemy #1), Arthur Pendragon (wielder of Holy Sword Caliburn, the Sword in the Stone), Fenrir, LeFay Pendragon (little sister of Arthur and high-powered Magician), and Gogmagog (legendary British Giant) are all working with Vali just as,

Rias Gremory, who is rumored to be just as if not more powerful than her big brother Sirzechs Lucifer, is nearly done completing her peerage, made up of:

Issei Hyoudou, an emotionally unstable and extremely difficult to predict teenager, who is found to be the wielder of Boosted Gear (Longinus 5) and the current Red Dragon Emperor

Asia Argento, recent Church heretic and wielder of Sacred Gear Twilight Healing

Kiba Yuuto, sole survivor of the Holy Sword Project and wielder of Sacred Gear Sword Birth

Koneko Toujou, little sister of Kuroka and equally powerful cat-spirit

Okay, review time. But instead of reviewing something current and universally agreed to be great like the LA One Piece (which, agreed, is pretty great), I'm instead going to review the second season of High School DXD. Because honestly, I actually find dissecting something like that to be more interesting.

Now, while I did like it, I feel that it was more structurally flawed than the first season. At least, I had more notes for this one, little things that kind of bugged me. But more on that later. Let's start with the stuff that I liked!

Loved how much focus Kiba got. In these kinds of shows, the secondary male characters very quickly get left behind, so the love given to Best Boy was great. And I loved his backstory and how it paid off. Mostly.

Honestly, I was a little uncertain about Gasper when he was first introduced, as I was worried that we would have another Zenitsu on our hands, but fortunately his coward moments came off as more sympathetic than annoying, he had other things going on for him that were actually kind of endearing, and him acting as Issei's starry-eyed apprentice was a hoot. So yeah. Gasper was a welcome addition to the cast.

I really like how much attention is given to Rias's insecurities. Given her upbringing it only makes sense, and despite being at the top of the food chain she feels threatened by her own peerage. It's an interesting way to take things.

That twist about God genuinely took me by surprise. Like, wow, to pull something like that in a show like this is pretty damn interesting. And it makes for a great explanation for how things are between the three factions.

Azazel is a true chad.

Things I was kinda mid about:

Xenovia and Irina are fine in concept, but I feel more could have been done with them. Xenovia becomes a Devil, has her big scene that everyone knows her for, and then immediately fades into the background. And honestly, more could have been done with Irina being Issei's childhood friend. As it is, she's more of a less endearing Asia. Hope more gets done with them.

Things I didn't care for:

Structurally, it was kind of all over the place. At first it was building a lot of nice momentum with the renegade priest and the Excaliburs, but then Kokabiel shows up out of nowhere as the real boss fight. I know they wanted to build up to the peace talk, but that whole business was awkward.

I don't even remember who those human mages and that Fallen Angel lady who disrupted the peace talk were and what their deal was. And Goku of all people showing up to just end the fight. At least Issei got a shonen rival out of it.

Was there a point to Serafal? Like, at all?

Koneko got done so dirty. Did she even have anything to do other than bully Gasper?

Who the hell was in charge of the eye catches? There's a simple formula! You show a slightly spicy pic of whatever character the episode is about before the commercial break, and follow it up with a really spicy pic of the same character on the return! But they were all over the place with the random characters!

So yeah, there was a lot of good stuff, but also more evident flaws and sloppiness.

Well, season 3 is the one that pissed everyone off. Let's give it a roll!
