[DPxDC Week 2023 Day 4: Danielle “Dani” Phantom // Halfa Jason Todd AU // Heartbeat]

• Daddy Issues Ship (Danielle “Dani” Phantom/Jason Todd) Established Relationship

“Why do you like cuddling me so much?” The question flows from his lips before he can think better of it. Instead of pulling away or changing the subject, she answered his question.

“Your heart is steadier than mine. It reminds me to breathe, to be alive.”

Jason craned his neck to get a good look at Ellie’s face. She studiously doesn’t meet his eyes, instead focusing on picking at a loose thread on his shirt.

He knew she had some sort of heart issue. Hard not to notice when they often cuddle close on the couch or fall asleep on one another. He hadn’t asked details and she hadn’t given them.

This…these words are striking all the wrong chords. Still he doesn’t push. She met Tim once and Jason didn’t see her for 3 weeks after that. She sent him pictures from Tibet, all scenery and places and people but never of her. Jason learned from that experience. He saw how worried she was about his reaction when she returned. She whispered to him in the wee hours of the morning before the sky lightened into dawn about a father-like figure who took and took and took, never gave. Someone who trapped her into a role and a place, then cast her aside as soon as the better option came around.

Jason makes sure to touch her lightly and fleetingly staying soft so she doesn’t feel trapped.

So yeah, Jason doesn’t ask what she means by those oddly ominous words.

Instead he gives.

“Sometimes I feel too heavy and hardened by some of my work, but you snuggle right in like I’m soft.”

She meets his eyes now, just briefly, but she does it.

“You are soft, Jay. You keep it wrapped up safe under that hard shell so that it doesn’t disappear. You keep living.” She pauses and Jason almost says something but stops and so she continues. “I don’t know how it works…living. I’ve been faking it in some vain attempt to pretend long enough that it becomes real, but I still don’t understand. I was made not born Jay.”

Jason takes a deep even breath.

“But you’re here now, with me. That’s living.”

“It’s so much easier, more simple, to be dead but I’m not that either. I’m stuck in this void and being with you makes me feel so much and see just how far from living I am. But your heartbeat? That makes me feel alive. It makes my heart match yours and I breathe in and feel the oxygen instead of just going through the motions.”

“That seems like a bit of a contradiction.”

“It is…but so am I.”

“I’m okay with that,” he says quietly, because he is okay with it and because she feels so safe and familiar, a feeling from a time he can’t quite remember (he thinks it might be when he was dead).

Her arms snake around him tightly and she buries her face in his chest.

He softly cards his fingers through her hair. It’s rarely loose like this. She usually keeps it in a ponytail or braid of some kind.

She hums and her body hums with her as she melts into him.

“Danny wants to meet you,” she murmurs almost sleepily when she finally unburies her face.

“Okay, I can adjust my schedule if we get a date and time.”

“Danny is my biological donor,” she adds on like she’s trying to wig him out.

“Not your father-like figure, right?” Jason clarifies.

“No.” She makes a face. “He’s the one who made me from Danny. Danny didn’t even know about me until I tried to kill him.”

Jason blinks. He was not expecting this, not today during sleepy cuddles on the couch but he’s not about to stop her or interrogate her about it.

“Danny didn’t have to care but he does. He was just a kid but he cared. He tried for me. He did what little he could within the restraints of his own circumstances. He gave me freedom.”

“Then I’d be honored to meet him.” And he means it.

“He’s like you,” she continues once again not looking him in the eyes. She’s found that loose thread again to pick at. Jason isn’t sure where she’s going with this but he has suspicions. “Where I’m neither dead nor alive, Danny and you are both dead and alive.”

“I don’t…what?”

“Death doesn’t let go even if she lets you come back. There’s a part of your soul that is forever changed by your time among the dead,” she explains. If it were anyone else Jason would already be on the defensive and anger would be bubbling to the surface. He’d have to fight to keep control of his emotions.

But it’s Ellie…

And that makes all the difference. Her earnest way of dropping bombshells has him reeling but not angry.

“I,” he pauses to search for the words, “it’s not that I didn’t know that I was different when I came back but this is a whole new level. You’re sure that I’m ‘dead and alive,’ right?”

“I’m sure Jay,” she pushes herself into a sitting position using his chest so she can look him in the eyes. “You’re a halfa. An earth born halfa but a halfa all the same.”

“How do you,” he gestures vaguely, “know?”

Ellie closes her eyes as she breathes in deep. When she opens them, her eyes glow a green not dissimilar to the Lazarus pits. She makes some sort of sound of water running over stones, but not with her mouth.

There’s an echoing pang in his chest right where those feelings of familiarity reside and his whole being vibrates with the sound of a plucked guitar string. The sound somehow escapes his body (maybe because it’s not a sound).

He lets out a soft, “oh.”

“You feel it too. The familiarity and comfort of death.”

He nods.

“I would know you no matter what form you take,” she whispers.

In lieu of an answer, Jason places his hands on hers. Slowly, ever so gently he tugs them up to his lips to place a soft kiss on them. He doesn’t know what to think or what to say. It’s kind of a lot that she suddenly dumped on him but he does know one thing for sure.

“I would like to stay with you no matter what form we take.”

It takes a moment for her to process the words but then the seriousness of the moment is broken and she’s rolling her eyes and shoving her hand in his face.

“You’re such a sap,” she complains but she softens. Jason didn’t realize she had been so tense until it’s gone. She lets him push her hand away from his face.

“Hey, you started it mx. ‘I would know you no matter what form you take.’ I just went with it.”

“Ugh…you’re right. I hate when you’re right.” With those words of admittance she huffs and drops her upper body once more to snuggle into him. He’s pretty sure she wiggles around extra just to annoy him. Today. Here and now, it could never be annoying.

Bc Ellie’s behavior might be confusing. She wanted to tell Jason about herself but was scared he would reject her so she decided to just info-dump everything on him and prepare for the worst. It’s not a great way to handle that situation but she isn’t perfect.

Also the time where she met Tim… so Tim just like started prying. The boi has no sense of boundaries and you cannot convince me that he does. She panicked and ran off bc instincts and only once she calmed down did she start taking pics and sending them to Jason to see how he was going to react.

It’s hard to get all that across when we are so limited by Jason’s pov. And that’s also the point. We are missing so much information and it’s kinda fun to write that. I’ve been needing to work on it more so here we are.

My take on some interesting things you probably didn’t know about Reed Richards:

- In the comics Reed’s mother Evelyn died when he was seven. She was a renowned scientist and so was his father, Nathaniel Richards. After she passed from a chronic, incurable illness (that was never named) it drove his father insane and he began to research time travel. One day he simply disappeared, leaving Reed in the care of his Uncle Ted Richards for the remainder of his childhood. 

- Reed’s uncle Ted was a politician and scientist that was held in contempt of congress for telling them to go to hell when they accused him of espionage and communism. After six months in prison his career and life were over, ultimately leading to Reed’s uncle taking his own life. 

- Reed inherit his families wealth and put it entirely towards his education and funding his research. While his parents weren’t insanely wealthy like Stark’s, it did give him a good foundation to survive on. However, once he went through that he still had to approach sponsors and donors to get behind his work while going through school. 

- Right, and he later in the future finds out his dad became a time traveler, had another family and felt no remorse about leaving his son in the first place. so yeah. he definitely got #daddyissues

- In some universes his father became Kang the Conqueror so yeah. That’s a thing.

- Reed attended CalTech, Harvard, M.I.T., State University, and the University of Vienna. 

- While he was in Austria he met his first love Alyssa Moy, a brilliant scientist like him, who he proposed to later on. 

- They both became military engineers, spies and assisted with ops missions aiding SHIELD. They even had a mission where they travelled to the Himalayans and saved a young Prince named Bayan from a Warlord Mystic and General named Lao-Tse. They were literally Mr. & Mrs. Smith-ing their way through Europe, going on adventures that would make Indiana Jones jealous.

- Alyssa broke his heart though, saying she couldn’t marry him because.....she felt they owed it to civilization to share their intelligence with other people. Yes. You read that right. She literally thought it was too selfish if her and Reed got together and made super smart children. Well, her loss is Sue’s gain.

- So then Reed went to State University and re-connected with Ben, met the Storm siblings and his lab partner (and future would be archnemisis) Victor von Doom. 

- Reed and his friends all began working for NASA on making Reed’s dreams of space exploration a reality. They were so close to finishing but then the government cut their funding and their supervisor’s told them they had to shut the program down. Reed wouldn’t give up though, he was like this is my life’s work, I am 99.9999999999% sure it’s safe and fine and I’m going up there with or without you guys- but of course, naturally, they came along. 

- These guys literally stole government property and hijacked a space ship they built like those are your ride or die friends. You know you all are going to jail when you get back. jks. 

- The rest is history. Unexplained space radiation storm turns regular humans into super powerful altered genetically mutated individuals. 

- But what you probably didn’t realize was Reed’s motivations for making them a public, superhero team. Reed was scared AF they were all gonna become test subjects for some sort of bioweapon or that their government would attempt to lock them up forever. I can’t believe he had enough where withal to be like “okay we’re gonna get personal branding, we’re gonna call down every news station in the freaking state to protect ourselves. we need the public on our side and not afraid of us so that we don’t get put away” like within the first moments after the crash, he’s thinking about fun nicknames, catch phrases, things they can do so people can see how amazing each and every one of his friends are. And he wants to make them famous because their lives are changed forever. It’s his fault, he has to make it right. And I am 10000% sure this man would have gone to prison after putting up the fight of his life, to protect his friends had it gone the other way. 

- reed was a child prodigy with an aptitude for science, mathematics, physics and mechanics. he was a little awkward rockstar that frequently pissed off his teachers for being that weird kid who knew so much. he started attending CalTech at age fourteen. FOURTEEN.

curse you for making me think like this but do you think some of the attraction spencer has to hotch (quick sidebar: i don't ship hotchreid, but i'm putting on my 'if i was writing for them...' hat) is the fact hotch was a lawyer like his own dad? projection of daddyissues? lol

Okay but for real, I’ve never thought about this before. I def always thought the reason Reid kinda attached himself to Gideon, and then later Rossi, was because of daddy issues (having his dad walk out when he was so young, being 10). They’re both a little older than his actual dad, I think, but they kinda took him under their wing (Gideon more than Rossi, in the beginning).

BUT, I can totally see this. Also Hotch has that super stoic and hardass exterior. He’s physically unavailable at first, and then later becomes emotionally unavailable. For someone who hasn’t had a father figure for the majority of their life, who looks up to anyone older than them, Hotch kinda ticks a lot of “daddy issues” boxes lol.

And this works best if you think there’s a 16 year age difference (since the damn show never solidified when his freaking birthday is, *I* will always assume they’re only 10 years apart, but that’s still quite a gap when Spencer first joins the BAU).

The whole lawyer thing is probably a bonus. Spencer probably remembers how his dad would work late, doing paperwork and whatnot. Lawyers have an “air” about them. They’re charismatic and logical. Hotch was a damn good lawyer before he joined the FBI, and he still has that air, that intense work ethic. Staying late and doing extra to make sure his team is taken care of.

So I can see it, yeah.

(Also it’s 6:30am and I just finished my second Red Bull so I apologize in advance if this seemed ramble-y LMAO.)

Can I get one with KNB? I’m short and pale (hi I’m a ghost). I have shoulder length hair that I’m always dying a different color. I’m sassy and sarcastic. I ship you with Aomine Daiki of Touou! You kind of remind me of Kuroko, but you guys wouldn’t mesh well. Who else would I pair you up with but Daiki? Literally, you guys are made for each other. Aomine likes that sass and sarcasm that you have because he thinks it adds a spark to your already amazing personality.  He likes people who have hard exteriors but soft interiors, such as your sarcasm combined with your heart and love for animals and art. Art is something that is totally out of Aomine’s league, but animals is a love of yours that he can definitely get behind. His first idea to win your affections/impress you was to steal Nigou from Kuroko for a day and introduce him to you, which obviously worked because Nigou is an adorable and charismatic dog. He won you over. Getting to know you was Aomine’s favorite thing about your budding relationship because he could see you literally transform right before his eyes as you got more comfortable with him, and he even felt himself becoming more open and trusting with you as he got closer to you. As Aomine learned your ticks and peeves, he picked up on the fact that you’d use self-deprecating humor as a coping mechanism, and he absolutely hates it. He gets so offended whenever you do that to yourself, and he’ll always make comments like “you think I’d date someone who’s as ugly as you say you are? Hell no. You’re beautiful babe.” just something sweet but also super douchey like that to make you feel better. It works most of the time.

Finally finished season 3 of Avengers Assemble! Loved it, the story really felt more focused than in the previous two!

Some things I want to mention

it’s interesting how much focus the Hulk got this season, with the inhuman arc, tail end of the season with Truman, and Dehulked. I love how much character they gave the Hulk and Bruce Banner. Since the only medium I know of Marvel is the MCU. It’s so interesting for me to see so much development from the Hulk and Bruce. How the Hulk is different from Bruce yet not.

I liked the mini-arch with the Thunderbolts and their eventual redemption via Clint.

It was nicely planned for Dehulked to come before the Inhuman’s introduction to the series. Since a lot of the things Hulk says or does after and during the Inhuman’s introduction is important. How all parts of a person are important, not just the powers or abilities or history alone. But all of it. All parts of them.

Loved Kamala so much. She’s so important for representation as a person of color, as a female, and as a teenager. I love her because of her loveable personality. She’s a fangirl, she’s a dork, and she’s honestly someone I would 98% act like in the face of the Avengers. (Fangirling over your idols? Same)

I really like how Dante and Kamala act during The Kids Are Alright. It’s so relatable. Knowing a weird amount of information about the tower? tbh I would too. Having weirdly specific conversations about Tony Stark’s sleeping habits? Same. Wondering what the heck is in Avenger’s basement and speculating what’s down their? Mood. The two just acting like kids being excited around their heroes is how they should act. They’re just kids who get to explore the living quarters of their idols and heroes. Who wouldn’t freak out a bit? #SpiritAnimals

It’s quite interesting how important and deep the relationship (romantic or not (preferably not)) between the Hulk and Black Widow is. They understand what it’s like to not be given the choice (Red Room and Gamma Mutation) or to be seen as a monster (Highly trained murder assassin since childhood and rage monster). How they do their relationship in this series is so much better than what they did in Age Of Ultron (the movie), it's not out of nowhere and not built of off poorly made ground. It’s built on a mutual understanding of the other’s history and not judging them on it.

The introduction of Vision, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther have varying levels of entertaining for me. Vision’s intro was not really interesting for me, since Vision felt to have less personality to me than his MCU counterpart. While T’Challa wasn’t as explored as I would have hoped for. While Carol. Well

Captain Marvel left quite an impression, so to say. Since in the MCU fandom she seems to be this light of hope to fix Thanos’ Snap. So I expected her to be someone more calm and collected, a more of a stoic/calm leader type. But nope, she’s full of energy (literally) and character. How she’s more impulsive and less team oriented since she’s air force, she has her own plane and thus fights mostly alone. Compared to army Steve, who has to fight with a team at all times on the ground.

Now, Captain Marvel and Captain America. I low-key ship them for some reason. There’s just this level of tension between them in Carol’s introduction episode. Her sort of arrogant joking flare to Steve’s modest and calm nature. Kinda like Steve and Tony. Like those two, the Captains have their similarities both have worked for the arm and know their strategy, albeit in different forms due to their section of the military.

The House Of Zemo is an interesting episode, that I have a lot fo say about

Now for my opinion on the Civil War 4 parter.

I did not expect Truman to be Ultron, like I was expecting him to be a part of Ultron’s plan when it became really obvious. But I couldn’t figure out how he would fit into it.

Inferno’s anger, loss of control, and reaction is quite understandable. He’s a kid who still recently just got these powers, and he feels responsible for the damage he did. But he’s just a kid.

The four part finale for this season is a doozy, it has so many characters and it connects so many of the plot lines from the whole season (except the Zemo one which technically connected to Songbird’s arc)

Okay, now part 2 to 4 will be very dense due to the amount of important character moments I loved

The sort of debate and the heat between both Captains of the opposing Avengers teams.

How concerned Carol was about Steve after he got hit.

How Tony did not care that they were getting captured, only caring that as long as Cap got medical attention it didn’t matter, even though they could’ve escaped with Nat and Cap would have still gotten the medical attention he needed.

Carol being the first (I think) to call Cap “Steve” (Bucky probably called him Steve and maybe Nat did at some point)

Steve and Carol called each other multiple names throughout this arc (Captain Danvers, Captain Rogers, Steve, Carol)

The fact that the two Captains only fought each other during the whole fight, and stayed in roughly the same location and not straying off. Like Thor fought Vision and Songbird. Tony fought T’Challa, Ant-Man, and Songbird. T’Challa fighting both Stark and Romanoff.

Everyone stopped fighting the moment Steve got injured, like a moment didn’t even pass till they were all at his side

The fact that the team’s main priority after getting out is Steve. Them protecting Steve when the guards come in to get them.

The fact that the Mighty Avengers quit because young Kamala was also forced to register despite already working for the government.

Love how Carol knew that Kamala was a tough girl and could take a hit, when even Red Hulk commented that Kamala’s just a kid.
