Are you searching for authors like Joe Abercrombie? (Part 2)
Photo by Pixabay on Pexels.com Hello Readers, I originally completed this post in March 2020 and it has turned out to be one of my most popular blog posts. At the time I made the list below I had not read all the authors, I still haven’t read them all, but I have been able to get through a few more. So, I thought I would update the original post to include them. Here it is, the original post,…

The Seventh Perfection is a novella made up of one-sided dialogue and lets you fill in the blanks.
A holographic locket and a mystery is all we, as readers, really get to follow a woman with a perfect memory through the history of the world she lives in. Daniel Polansky's style is unlike anything else I've read. and as usual, the Tor novellas are a joy.
I would have equally enjoyed a whole novel set in this world but I don't think that was the point. This quick dip into a complex political and familial drama was complete on its own. I enjoyed it very much.

Rules: post 9 of your favorite films you saw for the first time this year that aren’t new (2023/2024) but are new to you, then tag 9 people. I've been on an Alain Delon marathon (thanks to Daniel always mentioning Rocco and His Brothers during interviews), so that easily filled in the first 4 slots. I could have filled in 6, to be honest, but I wanted to make room for other 2024 finds. I kept reminding myself, "favorite—not best", in whittling my list down to 9; because logically, I know my runners-up, Le Samouraï (1967), L'Eclisse (1962), and The Piano Teacher (2001) are far more superior films than some of these; but if I truly based it on my overall experience (which can sometimes be down to fickle factors like a movie matching what I'm in the mood for), these are the ones that would make the cut.
I ticked off A Friend of Mine, Honolulu, Paradise Mall, Vaya Con Dios, Deeply, Un Poco de Chocolate, King's Road, and The Movie Teller on my Daniel Brühl watchlist last year. Of the 8, Vaya Con Dios was my favorite. It's such an underrated feel-good gem! For those who haven't seen it, I'd watch it back-to-back with Honolulu for those early aughts feels.

No pressure tag: @decemberafternoon, @deepdwellingsteamboat, @thorne-kreizler, @leatherandsoil, @alabamasweettea, @raraeavesmoriendi, @rachreads, @olloollo and anyone interested!

29 MARCH 25.
𓂀 HASTA: THE DEMONISED SEDUCTRESS .

the point of this post is to combat the hate hasta women receive en masse. there are other placements and nakshatras that receive a ton of unwarranted hate, but i noticed this pattern with hasta women pretty quickly.
🌗 THE HASTA WOMAN COMPLEX .
the hasta woman complex is essentially the madonna-whore complex. i have found that it is exemplified quite strongly by hasta women and the way the world interacts with them. i spoke on the nun/madonna archetype that hasta women embody in my hasta themes post, so this post will be exploring the other side of the axis.
due to hasta's desire "may the gods place their faith in me", hasta natives tend to become vessels of god in various ways. typically and most obviously, we see this as hasta women becoming nuns. virgo, the rashi hasta is placed in, is also associated with the virgin mary and mothers in general - including demeter, mother of persephone.
claire nakti has mentioned hasta women portraying mothers that keep their children trapped in a virginal state and dependent upon them, which could be compared to the persephone myth.
however due to the inherent duality of virgo, hasta women also portray temptresses or seductresses. these are insanely beautiful women that arouse people around them and attract lot of attention. they either enjoy and encourage this lustful attention or abhore it, but it's there regardless.
to me, the hasta woman complex can be described as the nun-seductress complex.
so, how does the seductress axis play out in real life?
people tend to project onto hasta women a LOT. they're held to severely high standards and are practically crucified and receive tons of public criticism when they don't live up to these standards of perfection.
now... hasta women do actually have a tendency to be controversial! they say and do highly controversial things, some of which i do not agree with.
alabama barker (hasta moon) has received a lot of hate due to being in the public eye since she was a child and is now at the center of a public argument with danielle bregoli aka "bhad bhabie". alabama barker is the "villain" in this situation, whilst danielle is seen as the "victim" or "winner" of it. she is also accused of copying black women and race baiting, something ariana grande has also been accused of. i explored this in my first hasta post as it relates to hasta natives' fluid and trickster identities.
brigitte bardot (hasta sun) is extremely racist, xenophobic, sexist and has been convicted for her racism - recieving six fines for it.
zoë kravitz (hasta ascendant) received a lot of backlash - once for saying she admired roman polanski's work, another time for criticising will smith's slap, and again for her unearthed post where she wrote suggestive and inappropriate things about the underage jaden smith.
many hasta women do not fit in any cookie cutter view of how a woman shoukd express themselves and break many stereotypes of their times. they tend to feel stifled by these expectations.
brigitte bardot stuck her head in an oven to protest her controlling, upper class parents trying to control her and her relationship. she was also described as a "sex kitten" after her role in "and god created woman", in which she plays a sexually liberated and carefree young woman. her carefree nature and disregard of social conventions attracts the men around her and earns her the disappointment of her parents, who try to control her.
monica bellucci (hasta sun) portrayed malèna, a beautiful woman who attracts the lust of the men and the hatred of the women in her village.
yoko ono (hasta ascendant) is seen as the reason the beatles broke up and was also seen as emasculating john lennon - see: *that* annie leibovitz photo.
rubi rose (hasta sun) is seen as hypersexual amd stupid, especially recently in contrast to halle bailey as they were both involved with ddg.
🌗 THE SEX KITTEN ARCHETYPE .
A sex kitten is a woman who exhibits a sexually provocative lifestyle or an abundant sexual aggression. The term originated around 1956 in articles in the British and American press and was originally used to describe French actress Brigitte Bardot. Sources believe Bardot's role in And God Created Woman was what inspired the term in the mid-1950s.
SOURCE
i've noticed hasta women have a connection with catwoman (post coming soon!) and also the sex kitten archetype. obviously, brigitte bardot is the first sex kitten and she is a hasta sun.
@saintfelina is known for her love of felines (see: the username) as she constantly posts about them and even has a blogspot post about sex kittens and how to achieve the look. her blog and blogspot is amazing btw, you should all check it out. she has a hasta ascendant.
i, myself, look like a cat and have all the "feline features", according to saintfelina's post and the themes in this hasta post are something i relate to. i have hasta ascendant.
ariana grande is a modern sex kitten and is well-known for that image. she used it to break out of the child star mold and forge her own identity. she has hasta moon.
🌗 MORE HASTA CELEBRITIES .
amber heard (hasta moon) was the recipient of enormous hate and was the victim of a media circus due to the depp v. heard trial.
meghan markle (hasta moon) was also the recipient of enormous hate after calling out the british royal family for racism and leaving the establishment with her huband, prince harry. she still receives a lot of hate to this day and lots of judgement and scrutiny.
mia khalifa (hasta moon) is a renowned pornstar and recieves a lot of judgement, hate and scrutiny for this.
taylour paige (hasta sun) portrayed a stripper in zola - a great movie.. you should all watch!

I've started reading Daniel Polansky's "Straight Razor Cure." This is a high fantasy novel, but it's in conversation with both urban fantasy and urban fantasy's detective novel influences. It has 1. a magnificently unlikeable main character who has been a detective and a soldier and now deals drugs and beats up his competition, 2. a series of violent murders, and 3. eeeeevil magic.
This is not an especially groundbreaking novel in terms of content or anything, but I'm enjoying it a lot more than many other novels I've picked up lately. It has a pleasant descriptive style without being florid and it reads like, well... like it's aimed at adults, and like it was edited by someone who understands that editing is a real skill distinct from writing.
This was published in 2011 by Hodder & Stoughton and it is also, I will note, not falling apart (looking at you, Yale University Press!) even though it's been languishing for years on my bookshelf and has survived moving house, haha.
#books and reading#fantasy books#bookblr#books#NGL i do think that the readability and the age of publication are linked. :/ i wish that wasn't my hunch.

Can I share what might be a controversial opinion? I think JK Rowling’s insistence that the HP cast not supporting her views is some kind of “betrayal” is ridiculous. So because they starred in the adaptation of their work, they’re obliged to agree with everything she says? What if she got super into animal rights? Is Daniel Radcliffe morally obliged to become a vegan? See how ridiculous that sounds? I think it’s a very silly hill for her to die on and it discredits some of her better points.
I would agree if it was true but I'm not sure it is. You say she's insisting that if the HP cast does not support her views they are betraying her. But when has she ever said that? I couldn't find any evidence of it. In fact, someone suggested the actors should apologise to her and she responded that "celebrities" in general should apologise, not to her, but to vulnerable women and detransitioners. She made it a point to say that it wasn't about her.
There's also a difference between saying "you're betraying me!" and "you're morally obliged to do this!" We have every right to say that a person's actions are immoral. It's not "ridiculous" at all. Statements such as "you are morally obliged not to be racist" or "you are morally obliged to be vegan" or "you are morally obliged to boycott Polanski" are opinions about what is right or wrong. As radical feminists, we make moral judgements all the time. Rowling is quite entitled to say that certain people are being immoral and causing harm, if that's what she thinks. Whereas "you must believe as I do out of loyalty" is narcissistic and an entirely different subject. So I'm not sure you're quite clear on what you're complaining about.

Alejandro y Hefestión en San Francisco.
(𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘥𝘰 𝘦𝘯 𝘦𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘰 𝟧 . "𝘓𝘢 𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘥𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘭, 𝘦𝘭 𝘍𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘰"- 𝘓𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘥𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘴. 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘴 𝘝𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘴. 𝘈𝘯𝘯𝘦 𝘙𝘪𝘤𝘦)
Leyes, Leyes, Leyes. No somos demonios.

I spent entirely too much time on this, but I really got going. I also probably missed a few people (and didn't even start on the crew because of so much overlap). I'm not sure if this is just Vancouver film industry at work or what, but I am done.

As you can maybe tell by the three reviews I posted in July, it was a good reading month! Overall, at least. I still had a couple “this was fine” and one DNF, but there were a lot of hits and I read more books than I have the last few months.
So, highlights: The Hollow Places was fantastic, as was Bookshops and Bonedust but for very different reasons. If you’re worried that Baldree won’t be able to repeat the magic of Legends and Lattes, stop now. It was pure cozy delight. March’s End didn’t get a review simply because I already had three coming, but it was also very good. It examines family dynamics and the realities of a portal fantasy world in a very complex, adult way. The characters are believable if not necessarily likeable, the world-building is great, the writing is strong… all the things.
But between March’s End, The Hexologists, and The Hollow Places, I needed a lot of lighter books to balance, as you can probably tell by the rest of my list. I enjoyed pretty much everything! I’m just sorry I didn’t like the Sanderson more but I guess that’s a sign he isn’t an author for me since I didn’t like the last book of his I read either. I’m also a bit sorry I couldn’t get into The Atlas Six because so many people love it, but I dropped it in a Little Free Library and it got snapped up almost instantly so hopefully it’s found a better home.
So that was my unhaul of the month! I … did not do well with my book haul, or perhaps I did too well with it. The Odyssey and Thud were both damaged books that came in at work and I couldn’t say no. Thud has some wear to the cover; the Odyssey has some uncut and weirdly bound pages I’ll need to slice open. (Have I read and do I own other editions of both? Absolutely.) Love in the Time of Serial Killers was an unexpected rebound—I originally got it as a reading copy and passed it on to a coworker, who sent it back when she’d finished.
And then, well. There’s a new bookshop opening in my metro area. They’ve taken over from a used bookstore and have to sell off its stock before they can properly move in their own. I had to go help out, right? I couldn’t find anything in their SFF section I wanted but still left with three books: Gaudy Night, Evelina, and a collection of Molière. I went with friends, the same day we saw Barbie. ’Twas a very good day, all around.
And last but not least, I have started on one of those long, dense reads that will last ages. I’ve had Music from the Earliest Notations to the Sixteenth Century on my shelf for years and made it a goal to finally start it this year, since it’s totally up my alley but also huge and academic. There was a point in July where I didn’t want epic stories, light stories, or narrative non-fiction, so I figured that was as good a time to start it as any. I’ll probably read a section or two a month, whenever a similar mood hits.
And now without further ado, in order of enjoyment…
