A/N: Special shoutout to my beta, my co-writer, and my dear friend @gvfjess none of this would be what it is without her touch.
You tap your fingers on the steering wheel, only 25 miles until your exit. You have been counting down for a month for this trip and now all that stands between you is the three hour drive to Dayton. Three hours feels like 10 when you make the trip alone, your friends not being able to make the show with you this time. You kind of like the idea of being alone at this festival. There won't be any arguing over who to see next, there won't be 100 bathroom breaks and no one talking to you through your favorite songs.
As you make the trek from the festival gates over to stage 3, you walk right up to the barricade. Only 6 feet separate you and the stage. You pull your book out of your backpack and sit anxiously waiting for the time to pass. As the crowd starts to fill in around you a while later, you check your watch. Only ten minutes until the show starts.
The last time you saw Greta perform was about a month ago when they were playing two days in Detroit. It was your third show of theirs and you have been counting down to today since the minute it ended. Your favorite band, outside in the sunshine, with alcohol? What more could you ask for?
However, would you still be here at this festival if they weren’t playing? Probably not. Is it a coincidence that your other favorite band plays the time slot after them across the field? Maybe so. Will you give up a chance to see Jacob Kiszka in the flesh, yet again? Not a chance. You hate to play favorites when they are all so talented, but the fact of the matter is you’re a Jake girl and you have on the shirt to prove it. Paired with your denim cutoffs and high top vans, you are ready for the hot, summer day. You zip your book back into your backpack and stand up, turning to face the stage.
You aren’t sure if it's the heat of the day, the lack of water, or just the excitement of the festival, but your heart is racing with anxious energy.
The crew members finish up on stage and you look down at your watch for what must be the tenth time, only 5 minutes until they are slated to start. The crowd has grown massive behind you, telling of how large of a following they have amassed in such a short amount of time. You can see commotion on the side of the stage and you think your heart is going to beat out of your chest. Suddenly you see them walk up the little stairs and onto the stage. A huge smile is plastered across your face as they each walk to their respective sides of the stage.
You are exactly where you wanted to be, dead center with a perfect view of all of the guys but especially Jake. After a minute or two of Josh talking, the band begins to play, starting off with Highway Tune. An obvious crowd favorite. You are so lost in the feeling of finally hearing them and seeing them play again that time passes too quickly. The songs keep coming and going before you even have a chance to really enjoy them. You sing every single word and have caught a couple of looks from Josh, a smile crossing your lips each time. About half way through When The Curtain Falls, you notice Jake looking at you, and you feel like you might pass out. He continues his solo as he makes the most gorgeous faces.
Trying to pull yourself together you turn your attention to Josh, then Sam, then Danny. You can’t help but let your gaze wander back to Jake though, and sure enough he is looking at you again. You continue to sing along and enjoy the moments you have left.
Before you know it they are playing the last song of their set and you’re sad it’s already over. You know you’ll see them again in just a few months in Ypsilanti, but it just always feels like time moves differently when you are at their shows. Too fast. Jake smiles at you as they leave the stage and your heart swells. You don’t know how anyone could love any of the other guys more than him. You are reeling from their set but you know that you will have to absolutely book it to make it to The Strokes set across the field. You look down at your watch.
Shit, I have 8 minutes to get there.
Pushing your way through the crowd you break free and sprint to the field across the way, completely ignoring your bladder who is yelling at you for relief. The pit is completely full, and you are lucky to be able to even see the stage at all from where you’re standing. You don’t care though, as long as you get to hear them play you’ll be happy.
You are standing with your hands on your hips, trying to catch your breath as the set starts. The crowd is completely freaking out, the screams deafening. Thankfully the sun is starting to dip lower into the sky behind the stage making it easier to see, and the air a bit less stifling.
A few more people stagger in behind you and try to push their way closer to the stage and you realize that you would rather stand back a little further than be crushed in the middle. They start to play one of your favorite songs and you smile and sing along. You are enjoying the set from the back, it's actually pretty fun without people pushing on you constantly.
While you are dancing alone, someone jogs up behind you.
“You can go past me if you want to get closer.” You say, gesturing ahead of you as you turn around to talk to them.
What you didn’t expect to see was Daniel Wagner standing behind you. He has changed clothes, has his is hair tied up and he is wearing sunglasses now. He is out of breath from running and wipes the sweat from his neck.
“Oh, I’m good here, not big into crowds.” He laughs politely, still breathing hard.
You can’t help but blush, you’re talking to the drummer of your favorite band. You smile and nod, turning back around not wanting to bother him, when he is just trying to blend in.
A tap on your shoulder makes your blood run cold.
Surely he is not going to talk to me again?
You swallow and slowly turn around again and you see him tip his sunglasses down as he speaks. “Did I just see you on the barricade a few minutes ago?” He asks with a smirk.
Oh god. He recognizes me.
“Um, yeah, I was there… right in the middle…” you squeak out with a smile.
“I thought so… I see you have good taste. Us, The Strokes…” he laughs pushing his sunglasses back up, placing his hands in the pockets of his shorts.
“Two of my favorites….” You reply, stepping to the side to let someone pass.
He looks over to you and laughs. “Favorite, huh? What’s your favorite song?”
“Who, you guys or The Strokes?” You ask.
“Mmm… both.” He replies as his fingers run over his chin.
“I feel like this is a loaded question and you can’t judge me… I think, for you guys, probably Edge of Darkness. For the Strokes probably….What Ever Happened.” You reply nervously.
“Wow, both great choices…” he looks at your shirt and chuckles. “…Jake girl.”
You look down and immediately cross your arms across your chest.
“You know, when I put this on this morning, I was fairly positive that I would never have to explain it to anyone, let alone someone from the band who is not Jake.” You say laughing nervously.
“Oh he would love this. In fact…” he reaches for the pocket of his shirt, and feels for his phone, then his back pockets before realizing it’s not there. “Shit, I must have left it. It’s your lucky day Jake girl.” He smirks.
“I have never been more thankful in my life…” You reply.
“So Jake girl, you’ve met him right?” He asks.
“Actually no, I have only been to 3 or 4 shows of yours over the past year or two, and I haven’t met any of you, well until now.” You reply.
“Oh, well I am obviously the best one to meet first. I’m definitely the coolest out of all of us, with the best taste in music.” He jokes.
“Clearly….” You say gesturing to the stage.
“Did you run straight here after your set?” you ask.
He laughs, “I changed first, but yes. I couldn’t miss it.”
You nod your head with a smile, and turn back to watch.
“So who else do you listen to?” he asks.
“Honestly, I mostly listen to 60’s-70’s music, a little classic rock, some folk music… you know, Crosby, Stills, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac… you know the classics.” you smile nervously.
“You just continue to surprise me.” he smirks. “It’s nice to know what kind of music our fans listen to aside from us…..” he replies.
“Oh, it’s your song!” he says excitedly.
Sure enough, ‘What Ever Happened’ begins to play and you can't help but smile, finally hearing it live.
“Hand me your phone.” He says.
You turn your head to him, “What?” You ask.
“Just let me see it, hurry.” He says. So you pull it out of your bag and hand it to him praying he doesnt see your phone background.
He does, and a chuckle leaves his chest.
“Sing, Jake Girl…” he says, holding up the phone taking a video spinning around in a circle taking in the full view, before turning it onto himself and stepping next to you, getting closer than you ever thought he would and recording you enjoying one of your favorite songs.
He stops the video after a minute or two, and takes a picture instead. He fumbles around with it for another minute or two before handing it back to you.
“Thank you, you didn’t have to do that.” You say.
“I know, but you just look so happy, I want you to be able to watch it again later.” He says smiling.
“That's sweet of you. Maybe I could be a Danny girl after all. Don’t tell Jake.” You wink.
“Our secret.” He shrugs his shoulders and licks his lower lip.
Why was that so… hot?
You would be lying if you said you didn’t find Danny attractive but you have focused so much of your time on Jake that you never really looked at Danny that way, but now you’re here and he’s here and he is so… charming.
You and Danny continue to talk off and on for the rest of the set, talking about seeing them in Ypsilanti, and where they would be going for the rest of the tour, their breaks, music and even books. He turns to you quickly, and bites his lips, you can see he wants to ask you a question.
“I… don’t have my phone with me.” He says.
“I know that…” you reply confused.
“Do you think I could borrow yours to make a phone call?” He asks.
“Sure?” You reply, handing it to him.
He grabs it from your hands, his fingertips grazing the tops of your fingers sending a shiver down your spine and causing a nervous feeling in your stomach.
“I’ll just be a second.” He says and you nod.
“Hey, I’m shocked you answered…. Yeah I’m still at The Strokes… I know I said I would only stay for a few minutes….Where are you guys at?.... Okay, I will head over there soon….”
He turns back to you, still talking on the phone. “Are you still with Josh and Sam, or did you wander?”
Your eyes grow big and you place your hand on his shoulder, and mouth ‘No!’
He wiggles his eyebrows up and down, “Perfect, I’m bringing someone with me…I know… It will be fine…see you soon.” He says ending the call.
“You ready Jake Girl?” He asks.
“For what?!” you ask.
“To go meet the guys!” he says excitedly.
You are so stunned you can hardly move your arm to take your phone back from him.
“Danny, no…. There is no way… I can’t… in this?” You reply pointing to your shirt. “I will never be able to show my face at a show again!”
“Oh, come on, he will love it I promise. How could he not?” He says.
You are shaking with nerves.
Why is Daniel Wagner talking to you? Even more, why is he taking you to meet the guys?
Oh my god I might pass out…
“Are you sure?” You ask.
“Oh, I am very sure. You are coming with me.” He says putting his arm around your shoulder and leading you both away from the crowd.
You walk along nervously, “Where are we going?” You ask.
“Apparently they are over behind the stage still, they want to go watch Fleet Foxes together… I told them I was just going to catch a song or two and then I would be back, but…” he trails off giggling.
“I’m sorry, I feel bad, I shouldn’t have kept talking to you.” You say.
“I was talking to you too, doll.” He says.
Doll?
The swirling feeling in your stomach has returned as you step up to a back gate next to the stage they performed on. Danny shows his wristband and talks to the security guard. They let him through and let you in after him. He removes his arm from your shoulders and gestures for you to follow him.
Okay, deep breath, this is it. You’re cool. You’re totally cool and not nervous at all. What you’re not going to do is talk too much. You are gonna be cool and be quiet.
Danny’s hand squeezes your shoulder in a gesture of confidence, he must be able to tell that you are nervous. “We are all normal people. You weren’t nervous to talk to me, right?”
“Well, no, but I didn’t know I was talking to you at first!” You reply.
“That may be true but I promise, there is nothing to be nervous about.” He says patting your shoulder, his hand lingering just a second too long.
As you approach the crew area, you see them. They are all changed into normal clothes, and they are just standing around talking. You swallow hard as you rapidly approach them. You cross your arms over your chest to try and conceal your shirt, but they look at you and they know.
“Sorry I am late, I got caught up talking to this fine lady. She was on the barricade for our set, then she must have sprinted over to The Strokes. A lady with taste if I do say so myself.” He laughs, breaking the ice.
“Hey, nice to meet you, I'm Sam. I am so sorry that Daniel has dragged you back here against your will.” He jokes with a kind smile.
“I’m Josh.” He says, reaching his hand out to you. You place your hand in his and he wraps both of his hands over yours. “A pleasure.” He smiles.
Oh boy here we go.
“Hey, I’m Jake. But I think you already know that.” He nods his head to your shirt with a smile.
You could just curl up and die right there. Your face blushes bright pink and you can't even manage a response. He is so beautiful in person.
“Hi” is all you manage to squeak out.
“See, I told you, the ladies love Jake…” he says jokingly to the guys.
“Alright alright, don’t embarrass her…” Danny says.
“No, I am flattered, really. I would be lying if I said I didn’t remember your face from earlier.” He smiles.
“Are you coming with us to watch Fleet Foxes?” Josh asks.
“I don’t want to intrude, I’m not even really sure why Danny wanted me to come with him!” You laugh.
“Oh you’re coming with…” Danny says, looking at you with a smile. “But first I have to grab my phone. You guys go ahead and we will catch up.”
They all begin to walk towards the other stages and you turn to Danny.
“I really feel like you should go enjoy this with them. You don’t even know me.” You say, nervously.
“Why can't I enjoy it with them and you? Maybe I want to know you? You seem cool, and obviously have good taste in music.” He says. “Stay here, I’ll be right back.”
He opens the door to the bus and dashes in and is right back out within seconds. He has a hoodie in his hand that he holds out to you.
“Here, once the sun sets it’s going to get cool.” He says with a soft smile.
You take it from him and fold it over your arm. “Thanks Danny, that's very… thoughtful.”
He pulls his phone out of his pocket, and stares at it as you walk. “Look how happy you were…” He says, showing you the video he took earlier.
“Did you send that to yourself?!” You ask shocked.
“I did. Was fun, I wanted to remember it too.” He smiles. “Okay, we better catch up before we lose them.”
Why did Danny send himself that video? Why does he want to remember it?
Oh my god, you have Danny’s phone number?
Wait, who did he call earlier?
Your mind is racing, and you are breathing heavily at the panic swirling in your chest when you hear him start to talk again.
“See, now was that as bad as you thought?” He asks.
What? Oh, meeting the guys.
“I mean, I was slightly mortified about Jake’s comment on my shirt, but other than that, no. It was actually fairly normal.” You reply.
“I told you.” He says throwing his arm around your shoulders again.
His arm is warm against your body, and you are enjoying the moment.
You meet up with the guys a few minutes later, and they smile when they see you both approaching. They all have beers in their hands and Jake reaches one out to you, “For the Jake Girl.” He says with a wink.
Oh my god. A wink!?
“Hey, I am trying to make her a Danny girl, I’m going to need you to stop trying to pull her back your way.” Danny jokes.
“No way, she’s got the shirt, it’s official.” Jake replies.
I’m sorry, are they fighting over… me?
“Listen, there is room in my heart for all of you…calm down…” you joke.
“For now…” Danny says, raising his eyebrows before you all hear the set starting.
For now?
Midway through the set Danny bumps your arm with his elbow, “You need another drink? I’m gonna go get one…” he asks.
“Sure, but that’s probably it, I have to drive home soon.” you reply.
He nods his head smiling and walking off to the drink stand. Jake takes his place next to you.
“I bet this is not how you imagined the night playing out huh?” he asks, laughing.
“Not quite, I definitely thought I was going to watch The Strokes and go home.” you reply laughing with him.
“Well I’m glad you didn’t, Danny seems happy. I was serious when I said I remember your face from earlier, though. I think you knew every single word.” he says laughing.
“Oh, I am sure you say that to all the girls…” you reply coyly.
“Actually, I don’t. We pretty much never hang out with fans. Danny took a quick liking to you though.” he says.
“In fact, when he called me asking where we were and told me he was bringing someone with him I was a little hesitant. You just never know, ya know? Imagine my surprise when it was you that walked up with him…”
Your skin flushes hot and pink.
“So, where is home for you?” he asks.
“I live in Ann Arbor right now.” you reply.
“Ann Arbor? Really? So you’re like what, an hour and some change away from us back home…” he says.
“Yeah, that’s how I found out about you guys to begin with. I’m kind of a local…” you smile.
“You sure are… So then were you in Detroit a few weeks ago?” he asks.
“I was! Right up front too.” you reply. “If everything works out I'm supposed to be at the Ypsilanti show in a month, too.” you say.
“Well we will see you there…” he smiles.
“Jake, are you after my girl again?” Danny says, walking up with the drinks.
“Daniel, read her shirt. She’s my girl...” he says laughing, taking the beer Danny is offering him.
He smiles and shakes his head, “For you...” he says handing you one and clinking his cup against yours.
“So, what did you two talk about? Is he as dreamy as you imagined?” he laughs.
“As a matter of fact he is, and was just telling him I was at the Detroit show, and I'll be going to Ypsilanti in a month or so.” you laugh while taking a sip of your beer.
“If you were at the Detroit show, and you’re going to Yspi, does that mean you’re local to Michigan or…?” he asks.
“Actually yeah, I was telling him that’s how I found you guys in the first place. I live in Ann Arbor. I used to see flyers and stuff for your gigs, and one day I decided to listen. Have been a fan ever since.” you say smiling.
“Is that so…. interesting...” he says with a smirk. “Well, what do you think, do you want to take a picture with all of us?”
“Of course I do, are you sure you don't mind?” you ask.
“No, I want to.” he says.
He turns to the other guys and brings them in, telling them you’re all going to take a photo, and they all crowd around you as you hand your phone to the person in front of you who volunteered to take the picture.
Danny stands one side of you, with his arm snaked around your waist. Jake on the other, his arm wrapped around the top of your shoulders. Josh and Sam stand next to them. The person takes 4 or 5 pictures of course all the guys are acting up and being silly.
They hand you your phone back and you flick through the photos laughing and thanking them.
“You’ll send those to me right?” Danny asks, his lips a little too close to your ear, goosebumps raising on the back of your neck.
“I might. Might keep them to myself. Haven’t decided.” you reply playfully.
As the set wraps up, you start to say your goodbyes, as it's a 3 hour drive back home to Ann Arbor.
“It was nice to meet you, see ya at the Ypsi show.” Jake says with a smile.
Oh my god…
“Can’t wait!” you reply.
You say goodbye to Josh and Sam and dig your keys out of your backpack.
Danny steps closer to you, “Can I walk you to your car? You know, for safety.” he laughs.
“Oh, you don’t have to…” you say bashfully.
“I would like to…” he says.
“Okay, if you insist.” you reply playfully.
“I do.” he says, linking his arm into yours.
The walk to your car is made with plenty of conversation to accompany it. Danny is actually very talkative compared to what you have heard about him. He is really smart and funny, and nothing like what you always imagined him to be like.
As you approach your car, you stop and turn to him. “This is me, thanks for the escort. I felt very safe.” you say playfully. “And thanks for letting me hang out with you guys tonight, it was completely unexpected and I had a great time.”
“Yes, tonight was very unexpected, I really enjoyed it… So you’ll be at Yspi, and you’ll send me those photos…” he questions.
“Yes I will be there. Maybe I will post one of the pics and tag you in it…” you say.
“I can deal with that, I might even like it.” he jokes.
“Have a safe drive back, and I will see you soon, Jake girl.” he says, leaning in and kissing your cheek ever so slightly.
You blush and your stomach flips at the sensation.
“Thanks Danny, see you later.” you reply, getting into your car and shutting the door.
It’s not until about an hour later when you realize that delicious smell you keep getting a hint of is coming from the hoodie that you are wearing. Danny’s hoodie.
Pulling into your normal parking space at your apartment complex you get out immediately and rush to your door, your bladder ready to explode. You fumble with the keys and finally get the door open and sprint to the bathroom.
Now that it’s nearly midnight, you begin to strip your clothes off, opting to shower in the morning. Peeling the hoodie off of your body, you toss it over to the chair in the corner and bite your lip as you remember the circumstances in which you acquired it.
Was today even real?
How did all of this even happen? Who knew Danny was so…sweet?
Pulling on an old t-shirt and a pair of shorts you crawl into your bed and plug in your phone. You turn off your lamp and lay in the darkness for a minute letting your mind process the day, before you decide to roll over and flip through the pictures and videos.
A smile instantly crosses your lips as you flip through the group photos. You see the group shot and you can almost still feel Danny’s hand on your waist.
You scroll over to the video from The Strokes and you feel a flutter in your chest as you watch it. You do look genuinely happy, he was right. But that's not what causes your butterflies, it's him. His smile, and his laugh as he records you. It’s so… real.
You let out a sigh as you lock your phone and put it back on your nightstand.Today was easily one of the most fun days you’ve ever had. You close your eyes and fall asleep replaying the day over and over, one face staying present throughout.
You sleep in later than usual, since you were up later than usual. When your eyes finally open you check your phone and see it's nearly noon.
Yikes.
You check the notifications on your phone, scroll through twitter and eventually roll out of bed and head straight for the shower. After a luxurious feeling shower, you step into your bedroom to put on some clothes to lounge in today. Pulling on a pair of black leggings and a sports bra, a sweatshirt catches your eye in the corner.
Hmmm… maybe just one more wear wont hurt…
You pull the dark green hoodie over your head and you're instantly surrounded by the smell of Danny again, eliciting a flutter in your stomach.
Jeeze, what is happening to me?
You spend most of the day cleaning your apartment, as you so typically do on Sundays. After a long productive day, you opt for dinner on the couch with a glass of wine and a movie.
One glass of wine later, you are huddled on the corner of your couch when your phone vibrates on the coffee table.
You lean over to grab it and see that it's a number that isn't saved. When you click on the text you see the previous message of the video from yesterday and know exactly who it is. Your heart leaps into your throat. You quickly save his number.
Why is he texting me?
Danny: Make it home okay last night, Jake girl?
How do you reply? Should you reply? Why is he thinking about you?
You lock your phone and set it down next to you, pretending to ignore it for the rest of the movie when in actuality it's all you’ve thought about for the past 45 minutes.
You pick it back up after the movie finishes and you have decided to not reply, but instead send a heart reaction. He will know you got home safe, but you won't have to use actual words.
You send it and your heart is practically beating out of your chest.
A few seconds later you see a text bubble come up, but then it disappears. You lock your phone and head to your bedroom deciding it is time to go to bed. You have to work in the morning and you hate not feeling like you didn't get enough sleep.
You plug your phone in and crawl into bed. You scroll through twitter not even ready to talk to your friends about what happened last night. You switch to Instagram and see that the band page has posted a new photo. It's a photo from their set yesterday and your eyes do something they haven't done before. They look for Danny first, not Jake.
What is going on with me?
You like the photo, and set your phone on the nightstand, hoping that you will fall asleep quickly tonight, and you do.
Work drags on for what seems like forever the next day. One boring phone call, after a boring meeting, and somehow it's only just now 4pm. Just one more hour until you can go home.
Barely suffering through that last hour you make the drive home and when you slip into your apartment you feel more than ready for a drink.
Taking your half empty bottle of wine from the fridge you pour yourself a large glass and sit on the couch.
You get a text from one of your friends as you scroll through your notifications in your group chat.
K: How was the show the other day?
You: I’m sorry I haven’t told you all yet but, this happened...
You: IMAGE
Not sticking around for the chaos to ensue you close out of your messages and giggle as you watch them roll in.
You open the picture again, and decide that it’s time to post it. You opt for an Instagram story, tagging all the guys and typing a caption to go with it.
“Met some of the best guys, but still a Jake girl...”
You giggle as you post it. Going back to your group chat that is blowing up with questions. For the next few minutes you type out a detailed story on what happened, trying to answer all of their questions without giving away too much. Right as you’re about to hit send you see an Instagram notification come across the top of your screen.
‘danny_gvf replied to your story’
At that moment you are pretty sure your heart stopped beating. You immediately click on the notification and see his response.
danny_gvf: A “Jake Girl” in Danny’s hoodie…
Oh gosh...
DANNY POV
You haven't been able to get her out of your head since that day. Replaying every second in slow motion. Luckily you had the video you sneakily sent to yourself, but you knew right then in that moment you weren’t going to be able to forget her. You didn’t want to. You had to hold yourself back from asking her questions about herself all night. You couldn’t believe that she has been at shows before and you’ve never seen her. You have spent way too much time checking Instagram the past two days, waiting for her to post that photo. Checking your tags far too often, and never seeing what you were waiting for. So when you got the notification tonight that you had been tagged in a story, you opened it ready to be disappointed, only to be met with her beautiful face. Looking at the picture, you can almost still feel the curve of her waist against your hand. You notice her caption and laugh, still calling herself a Jake girl. But she is wearing your hoodie. You swipe up and take your chance.
You: A “Jake Girl” in Danny’s hoodie…
I wonder if she is going to reply this time or just send a heart again…
A few seconds later you get a notification that she replied and you can't help the smile on your face as you immediately open it.
Her: So I’ve been caught…I actually left with it on, I will find a way to get it back to you. Thanks for letting me borrow it. That was really sweet.
But you don’t want it back. You want her to keep it.
You: Keep it, you can wear that instead of the Jake shirt… ;)
Her: Maybe…
You: You never sent me these pictures…
Seen.
Hmm… maybe I pushed it too far.
You open the story again and look at the picture. She really is beautiful, and she seems to like good music and she's funny…
Stop, you’re getting ahead of yourself. You don't even know her name.
Your phone buzzes on your lap. It’s her.
Her: So impatient Daniel…here you go…
Opening each photo you look at the smiles on everyone's faces. It really was the best night.
You: How late did you get back the other night?
Her: Around midnight…I was only drowsy half the time lol
You: Don’t know how you did it, I was completely wiped after you left, I went straight to bed.
Her: Well I didn’t have to play a whole set in front of crazy screaming fans ;)
You: Screaming fans are the best kind…I seem to recall a certain cute girl right up front screaming every single word.
Her: Oh really? Should I send her the hoodie?
You: She already has it…
Her: Daniel, are you flirting with me? How could you betray Jake like this? You know Im a Jake girl…
You: Are you though?
She doesn't respond right away and your heart is racing to see how she will reply. Finally a few minutes later she does.
Her: I’m not sure anymore…
She’s not sure?! Maybe I do have a chance…
You: Having a change of heart Jake girl?
Her: Wouldn’t you like to know…
More than you know…
Josh’s voice snaps you back to reality.
“What are you so smiley about Daniel?” he asks with a grin.
“Ah, nothing…” you lie, locking your phone and sliding it under your leg.
“Wouldn’t have anything to do with this would it?” he asks, holding up his phone, showing her story to you and Sam, who is now listening in on the conversation.
“It could…” you admit shrugging your shoulders.
“Daniel…” Sam says, smacking your shoulder playfully.
“I don't know, she was really cool and I'm kinda digging her a little bit.” you admit.
Josh’s face drops slightly and he sighs, “She was a cutie, but you know that's dangerous…if things were to go bad with you two… It's not a good look. You know we shouldn’t get involved with our fans.” he states.
“But she — I think it would be different…” you try to reason.
“No dude, it never is. It’s always the same. You know that. You need to just try to forget about her.” he says sternly.
“She’s going to be at the Ypsi show…I can’t just ignore her…” you say confrontationally.
“Well, you need to think about the repercussions on you, and the rest of us if it doesn’t work out. There is a reason we don't hook up with our fans. I think it would be wise to leave it alone.” Josh replies, smacking the top of his legs as he stands up and walks away.
You nod your head, you know he is right. It's a bad idea.
But maybe she is different…
You walk to the back of the bus and climb into your bunk, pulling the curtain closed.
You just need to forget her.
As you tuck your phone into the little drawer next to your head you reach up and turn off the light, resting your hands on top of your head covering your eyes and letting out a deep sigh.
Like you’ll be able to forget her…
The noise of the road lulls you to sleep, the vision of her dancing playing through your head.
