How many closeups does HAL 9000 get in 2001: A Space Odyssey?
Did a little thing, just short of 3 minutes of the total runtime are taken up by HAL’s ominous lens.
Edit: I have now added captions, also here’s a Google Drive upload just in case.
#23 is my favorite, I never noticed it fades directly into Dave marching out of the airlock to go deactivate him without changing color at all, what a great and poetic shot.
Also of note are:
The way it zooms in closer and more unnervingly after the first handful of shots when HAL asks Dave his questions and is really beginning to malfunction, then stays at that distance for the rest of the movie. Some of the shots are identical and only vary in length and audio, which is why I included lead ins/outs to differentiate.
The way the light becomes drowned out by the red lighting of the logic memory center, leaving just the yellow dot and resembling a pupil contracted tightly in fear.
The slightly different brightness levels of the red light (can you say headcanon that he can purposefully and/or unconsciously change the brightness levels as a subtle form of computer body language).
The way the red lighting on the closeup of Dave marching out of the airlock implies that HAL can see him there despite there being no lens visible that I noticed.
And the fact that, if you look closely during the ones in the memory center, you can see that the viewpoint of the lens includes the white panel and the lens beside it, indicating that the POV lens is on the back wall, which seems a bit redundant design-wise but the artistry is very much worth it. This lens can never be seen, as Dave always “happens” to be blocking the spot it would likely be in. In the sequel, they simply do not point the camera toward that wall at all, much like they avoided having the characters go to the carousel area because they really didn’t want to rebuild that set.

The Martin Family Album: Volume IV
Gardening in PJs.
With his Green Thumb, Robert proves to be a natural. (Although I think he needs to tackle those weeds pronto.)
Carol would love to be an older sister, but given that Harriet isn't getting any younger, it might not be wise to adopt again, and I think she's destined to be an only child.
Moonshine is there to see her off on her first day at school - albeit distracted by a tasty puddle.
Well, the younger sibling that Carol longs for might not be on the horizon, but it looks like there will be at least one addition to the family...
There's a sudden profusion of kittens! There are four altogether - Daisy, Dave, Dougal and Douglas - but please don't expect me to know which is which!
They're being extremely well cared for, by both parents.
Except when one accidentally wanders off and gets a little lost... (They were safely returned to the fold - no harm done!)
However, by the time they age up, I think parental patience with their antics is wearing a little thin.
Look at that adorable fluffy face though! I think this is Dougal?
Mum and dad both head outside into the spring sunshine, for a bit of respite from their rambunctious brood.
Perhaps in the end Carol will appreciate not having to share her parents with anyone else, as she's never short of attention from either of them. They're both so very glad that she came to live with them, and made their little family complete.
