Hi there!

Obara would be my third favorite Sand Snake after Sarella and Elia.

Obara Sand always walked too fast. She is chasing after something she can never catch, the prince had told his daughter once, in the captain's hearing. (AFFC, The Captain of Guards)

My goodness, what could it be?

Oh, right. Her mother. Her identity. Her sense of self.

She is the reason I can never ever truly like Oberyn.

“I am the whore's whelp, or had you forgotten?" (AFFC, The Captain of Guards)

No matter how heartbreaking Oberyn’s determination to get justice for Elia’s murder, I can never forgive him for this.

"The day my father came to claim me, my mother did not wish for me to go. 'She is a girl,' she said, 'and I do not think that she is yours. I had a thousand other men.' He tossed his spear at my feet and gave my mother the back of his hand across the face, so she began to weep. 'Girl or boy, we fight our battles,' he said, 'but the gods let us choose our weapons.' He pointed to the spear, then to my mother's tears, and I picked up the spear. 'I told you she was mine,' my father said, and took me. My mother drank herself to death within the year. They say that she was weeping as she died." Obara edged closer to the prince in his chair. "Let me use the spear; I ask no more."

Oberyn not only suddenly came to take her away from her mother. He did not come to offer her a “better life”, or do his duty to her as her father.

He made her choose.

He demonstrated an absolutely despicable abuse of power. He shows up out of the blue after presumably no contact and no support, assaults and humiliates her mother, a woman already on the very edge of society, and then makes Obara choose between this distorted image of victimized weakness, and his own power. Female tears vs. his phallic symbol. It’s a false dichotomy, the birth place of “not like other girls”, of internalized misogyny, of self-hatred.

She cannot have both. She cannot love both. She must disdain one to reap any benefit from the other. It is a horrifying violation. He erases half of her identity by dragging it through the dirt and creating a clear distinction between himself and his offer, and the woman who has been Obara’s caretaker all her life up to then. Her own mother. Her own sex.

We know that the young red-haired prostitute died trying to save her daughter, little Barra, while Robert had not lifted a finger to support them, and only had scorn for the girl’s choice of name. Was she weak?

Even her mother’s grief and desperate end is turned into a weapon against Obara, instead of proof of her mother’s love, it is proof of her mother’s supposed worthlessness. She must hate her mother because to stop would be to recognize that her father, her sole source of security in the world, was a monster to do this. She must cling to this phallic symbol of a weapon because Oberyn tainted all alternatives. The whore’s whelp she calls herself, spitting on her mother every time.

When she arrives at Sunspear to confront Doran about Oberyn’s death, she asks for troops and permission to sack Oldtown. Her hometown. For the wealth of the Hightowers, supposedly, but somehow her first instinct upon the news of her father’s demise is to attack the place she herself came from, her mother’s city. Begging to use the spear.

Perhaps it is the only way she knows how to express her pain, as Oberyn stole her tears. Self-destruction.

Even Nymeria understands there is a personal motive outside of Oberyn’s death.

“Obara would have me go to war.”

Nym laughed. “Yes, she wants to set the torch to Oldtown. She hates that city as much as our little sister loves it.” (AFFC, The Captain of Guards)

Obara is the only one of the elder Sand Snakes for whom GRRM constructs this kind of look back at her "acquisition" into the royal family, and I sincerely doubt that it is accidental. It is the one that matters, the one that is the most illustrative.

Nymeria has her noble Volantene mother’s beauty and bearing.

Tyene is said to carry her mother’s innocent appearance, and received a religious education at least thorough enough to enable her to “ingratiate herself” with the new high septon. It is, of course, a cynical facade.

Sarella proudly practices the marksmanship of the Summer Islanders of her mother’s heritage.

But Elia and Obara both show the real cracks that counter this hazy facade of the fierce Eight Sand Snakes, liberal Oberyn‘s loyal and independent daughters. They are all an extravagant self-indulgence on Oberyn’s part, created wherever he went and then picked up like a shiny tourist trinket. They all must revolve around him, the reflections of Oberyn in the looking glass of their mothers.

No," Elia broke in. "You're the one they'll want to ransom. You're the heir to Dorne, I'm just a bastard girl. Your father would give a chest of gold for you. My father's dead." (TWOW, Arianne II)

Elia, bless her, has her mother to lean on and still she keenly feels the legal reality of her position. Obara does not even have that.

Sarella out of all the elder Sand Snakes, seems to be the most emotionally independent. She is the only one NOT around all the others in Dorne, and while she follows her father’s footsteps in Oldtown, she practices her mother‘s traditional archery and emphasizes her.

Alleras smiled back at him. "I only buy for friends. And I am no lord's son, I've told you that. My mother was a trader." (AFFC, Prologue)

This healthier balance, this valuing regard for her mother’s heritage (unlike Tyene's pretense) is what makes Sarella truly remarkable to me. She is not hot-headed nor does she seem to be boiling with a thinly veiled fury. She does not seem to advocate for murder, but we see her muse about feeding the people. She is serene, like the black swans on the Godseye, like the swanships, with a steady hand and a sure intention. Whatever exactly that intention may be. Ironically, sexism forces Sarella into a masculine role, as well. But it is a deliberate mask, elegantly worn. Freely worn. Unlike Obara's struggle.

The character in whom I see most parallels with Obara Sand is Jon Snow in his current iteration.

Ned, well-meaning though he may have been, robbed Jon of half of his identity and left him with an image that is considered tainted by the world around him. His mother is as inaccassible as Obara’s mother, emotionally, though for different reasons. Their father’s choices left both of them emotionally crippled to a degree. One mother was erased by silence, rendered invisible. The other, worse, was erased by violent and verbal degradation.

Consequently, it is Obara we see the most seemingly “unhinged”, when she is introduced, the most overtly violent, the most “unfeminine”. This is not an expression of personal taste, nor a handy mask. It is a grim adherence to the choice she was offered.

She is almost thirty, and came to Dorne almost two decades earlier, well before Elia’s murder.

"It has been twenty years, or near enough to make no matter.” (AFFC, The Captain of Guards)

She was somewhere between Sansa’s and Arya’s current age when Elia was killed. Does she perceive the contradiction in Oberyn living for vengeance for Elia, when he treated her own mother not so very very differently? He did not kill her truly, but he erased her just the same, with a violent contempt. A "weak woman", with only tears for weapons, her child ripped from her.

If Obara sees it, she is not letting on. She craves violence. She craves an expression of power to put something where tears might have their place. The way she was taught.

Of course, it would be boring if that is where it was truly headed. Much like Aegon and Jon, much also like Asha Greyjoy who adapted to an extremely male-dominated society, Obara would probably benefit from turning away from her father's looming shadow to a certain degree. I have some hope that GRRM will make room to explore it.

Obara is given a quest of justice and distraction: Darkstar. "Beard him in his den", as Arianne travels to "beard the dragon".

Your Speculation here (by @sayruq) is extremely interesting, placing Obara in the line of defense of peaceful children at the watergardens. The same children she had dismissed earlier, like the child she was not allowed to be. Wielding that spear not for vengeance or self-glorification but in the way it should be wielded: to defend those soft weak things that are precious.

I really hope this is where it's headed, and I really hope she will find her peace in that role.

“Natural” - Chapter 11 - Embry Call x Reader (1 of 2)

Victoria vs Edward

Reader’s POV

I wake up to Embry slightly sitting up, whispering “Please.”

“You gotta wake up.”

I mumble an okay, sitting up with him. Happy to be in his arms.

“Seth is outside.” Embry’s morning voice brought chills to my spine.

“Alright, let’s go out.” I get up and lead the way out of the tent.

I notice the snow and immediately feel happier. Oh how I loved the snow far too much.

“We’re playing in the snow after this shit-show.” I giggle, looking back at him.

I thought about all of the play fights we’ve had in the snow. All the igloos we’ve built, the snowmen, the snowball fights. Everything I wanted to do with Embry again.

“You got it, bean.” Embry smiled at me, his hands finding my lower back.

“Hey Seth.” I reach out a hand to pet his soft, sand colored fur.

“Hey Jake.” I softly smile.

“Hey.” He says, slight attitude coming out.

I ignore it and attribute it to his night last night, which I assumed to be not so great.

“It’s time to go.” Edward states.

Embry looks me in the eye, holding my waist.

“Alright, I love you, okay? Be safe and I’ll be right back by your side as soon as I can. You got this, bean.” He pulls me into his chest, kissing the top of my head.

“I love you, Em. Please be safe, kick some ass.” I smirk.

He kisses me one last time, pulling away was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Letting go was hard.

I say goodbye to Jacob before he and Embry go behind the bushes to undress and phase. I pick up their clothes and shove them into my backpack, taking my pocket knife out and putting it in my jeans pocket. I took the hoodie off and put it in the backpack as well, wanting to prevent it from getting damaged or stained.

Seth and I walk over to the significantly larger wolves, Jacob and Embry.

“I love you, Em. I’ll see you later.” I kiss his snout and rake my fingers through his soft fur.

Jake and Embry nod at me once more, before Embry exchanges a look with Edward.

“She’ll be safe.” Edward comforts Embry’s nervous thoughts.

Jacob and Embry bolt down the mountain, faster than my eyes could barely make out.

I sit and wait with Edward, Seth, and Bella.

“She’s close. I can hear her thoughts.” Edward gasps, looking around for her.

I lean closer into Seth, fear setting in. However, Edward grabs me and pulls Bella and I close to him.

“Seth, go.” Edward says quietly.

“She caught my scent, knowing you would be with me.” Edward breathes out.

I felt my heart beating in my throat, I clutched Edward’s arm tight enough that it hurt my own.

“She’s not alone.” Edward whispers, looking around.

A tall, pale man with red eyes comes out from behind the trees.

“Riley. Listen to me. Victoria is using you to distract me. She knows I’ll kill you. In fact, she’ll be happy she doesn’t have to deal with you anymore.” Edward begins.

A redheaded woman lands on a rock nearby, shaking the ground below us from the force.

“Don’t listen to him, I told you about their mind tricks.” Victoria manipulates the tall boy, Riley.

“She only created you and this army to avenge her true mate, James. She doesn’t care about anything else. You know the area, that’s the only reason she chose you. She doesn’t love you.”

“Riley, don’t let him do this to us. I love you, you know that.” Victoria looks at him.

We stand in silence for a moment, I felt my heart about to leap from my chest.

“You’re dead.” Riley whispers, lunging at us. But after a step at us, Seth jumps from the side, taking him down. He tosses him like a ragdoll, ripping Riley’s hand off.

Riley’s scream echoed in my eardrums, full of pain.

Victoria begins to run away, abandoning Riley to die alone.

“You won’t get another chance like this again. You want me to feel the pain you felt when I killed James. When I turned him to ash, when I turned him to nothing.” Edward taunts, Victoria turns around shaking.

I hear Seth and Riley, some of the most unpleasant sounds ever.

Victoria’s horrific growl, no scream, frightened me as she lunged over to Bella and I. Edward grabs her, taking her down. He flings her into a tree. She climbs up faster than I thought as Edward ushers us out of the way. He pushes the tree down, Victoria lunges at us once more.

I look at Seth and Riley once again. Riley was kicking Seth away, in which he succeeded. Hitting his head against the rock, Seth falls unconscious.

“Seth.” I cry out in a whisper, tears coming to my eyes.

Riley comes over and helps Victoria out of Edward’s hold. Edward gets ahold of him, almost killing him before Victoria grabs the back of his head, ready to kill Edward.

Bella’s breath hitched, panic filling both of our brains.

“The third wife…” I whisper.

“What? Right now? Quileute legends right now?” She yells at me.

Of course she forgot this one.

I took out my pocket knife from my pocket, slicing a line in my arm. I felt the warm blood drip down my arm, dripping onto the snow.

I heard hissing, Bella’s eyes widened as Victoria and Riley look at me, ready to come for me.

It distracts them enough for Edward to break free, sending Riley flying.

I see Seth come out and drag Riley away, begging Victoria for help. She ignores his pleas and sets her eyes on us.

Edward stops her from getting to us, killing her. I heard her skin cracking as Edward took her head off.

Edward’s face, one of shame, disgust, and relief stared at her body. Bella and I looked at Victoria’s lifeless body on the ground.

Edward rips my shirt and ties it around my arm to stop the bleeding. He thanks me and grabs Bella, pulling her close into his side.

Seth returns and I walk over to him, leaning into his warm body.

“We have to go, now.” Edward says, disgust in his face, throwing a zippo onto the bodies-- them bursting into flames.

He carries Bella down as Seth carried me down to the field where we were met with the pack and the rest of the Cullens.

I see Embry, flinging myself off of Seth I run over to him, pressing myself into his massive body, Seth following close behind.

“Leah, don’t!” I hear Edward yell.

I tear my eyes away from Embry to see Leah with a vampire’s arms wrapped around her neck. The sounds of her struggling and snapping caused me to squirm. Not Leah.

Jacob lunges, ripping the newborn off of her. The vampire crushes Jacob in his arms, letting him flop onto the ground, Leah still shoving herself away to get herself together.

“No!” I yell, running to Leah, stopping myself in my tracks as I hear Jacob’s yelp.

Before the man went back in on Jacob, Paul and Sam tore him to shreds.

“His bones on the right side of his body are shattered, they’re already healing.” Carlisle explains, holding Jake in his arms to examine him.

The rest of the pack phases, except Seth, and they pick him up-- carrying him to Billy’s as Sam promised. They would wait for Carlisle to come help them.

I was in shock, I just watched two of my best friends almost die.

I look up at Embry, wave and mouth and “I love you” so he wouldn’t worry about me.

“I love you, too.” He mouths back.

I get back onto Seth’s back, speeding off into the treeline to get out of there before the Volturi showed up. I watched the pack carry Jacob’s body back to Billy’s.

I just wanted to hug Embry, I need to be in his arms. I need to talk to him. I see that he’s okay, but I want to hear his voice.

“Just a few more minutes.” I whisper to myself.

Pitch Me your thing!

HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.

So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.

NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.

Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.

My rant about Catelyn Stark (towards Jon Snow):

As we know at the beginning of ASOIAF books, Jon is introduced as Ned Stark’s bastard son and the same age as Ned’s true first born son, Robb. Catelyn resents Jon because he is the living, breathing proof of her husband’s infidelity. And perhaps, she also hates him because she could not give her husband a Stark-looking heir, and out of her five children, Arya is the only one who looks like her father.

“She might have overlooked a dozen bastards for Ned’s sake, so long as they were out of sight. Jon was never out of sight, and as he grew, he looked more like Ned than any of the trueborn sons she bore him. Somehow, that made it worse.” -- Catelyn II, AGoT

I think some people will say that she is not a cruel woman, and she let him live in Winterfell, blah blah blah. Remember, Catelyn tolerated his presence for Ned’s sake. (I really wonder what would happen if Jon stayed at Winterfell instead of going to the Wall.) When Ned decides to go to King’s Landing, Maester Luwin told the Ned and Catelyn that Jon wants to go to the Wall, and she informed them that she wouldn’t have Jon here (instead of having him as one of Robb’s trusted ally/bannerman in the upcoming war). This just means that with Ned going on the South, there would be no one else to object regarding of what she wants do regarding Jon. She wants Jon gone.

Jon (to Bran): “I’m going North to the Wall. Uncle Benjen is waiting. We have to leave today, before the snows come. Don’t die. We’re all waiting for you to wake up, me and Robb and the girls. Everyone…”

Catelyn: “He was my special boy. I wanted him to stay with me. I went to the sept and prayed seven times to the seven faces of god that Ned would leave him here with me. Sometimes, prayers are answered.”

Jon: “It wasn’t your fault.”

Catelyn: “Jon?”

Catelyn: “It should have been you.”

I don’t care if she said that out of grief for her son. Her, wishing Jon had fallen instead of Bran? that says “cruelty” to me. She cannot just hate a motherless child just for existing, or wished him to die. Even IF Jon is Ned’s son, the fault lies within Ned. Also, if she’s that kind, remember that she groomed her eldest daughter, Sansa into becoming Catelyn 2.0 (until reality gets Sansa b******-slapped in the face), while her youngest daughter, Arya, who is the exact opposite of her sister, had a closer kinship to Jon that made it easier for Jon to love her back.

Then… fast-forward to Robb before the “Red Wedding”. Robb wants to legitimize Jon because he needed a male heir to take over if he died. At this point, Robb had no sons, both of his trueborn brothers are believed to be dead, Arya was assumed to be dead, and Sansa was in the power of the Lannisters. If Robb died, the Lannisters would take control of the North in Sansa’s name and it’s likely that most of the Northern lords would oppose this, creating a war within the North, which is the last thing he needs.

Robb needed to have an heir, and Jon was the only immediate relative who he knew to be both alive and free. Jon wasn’t exactly free, because he swore an oath as a man of the Night’s Watch, but Robb was confident that he could make a deal with the Night’s Watch to get him released from his vows, and he has no other options.

Of course, there’s another reason to this. It’s pretty clear that Robb and Jon have genuine affection for one another. They see each other as brothers, even though Catelyn has always treated Jon more like a threat. The fact that Jon has never been treated as an equal seems harsh and unfair to Robb, and it is something he’d like to make it right. Robb trusts Jon to take over for him, should the worst happened.

Robb vs. Catelyn (Family vs. Power): Robb accepts Jon as family and Catelyn does not. From Robb’s prespective, he’s ensuring that his family remains the power in the North. From Catelyn’s prespective, he’s handing over his family’s power and holdings to an outsider.

Catelyn is one of my least favorite characters. She may not be a bad person as Cersei, Tywin, etc., but she’s a flawed one.

(IF... the speculations are true that Jon is really Rhaegar and Lyanna’s son, I wonder how Catelyn would react that Ned is really faithful to her all this time, and the bastard child she resents so much is actually her nephew?)

The real villains and the real heroes of Season 8: predictions and foreshadowings

Back when the character posters for Season 8 was released, a few folks in the JonSa fandom speculated about how Daenerys, Euron Greyjoy, and the Night King, were shown to be seated on the Iron Throne with the Stanley Kubrick glare. Here are the pictures of what I am talking about.

Kubrick stare is a typical characterising feature of villainy. Given that Euron Greyjoy, Daenerys Stormborn, and the Night King all sport this, it is safe to say that Team Storm are the main villains.

The Crypts of Winterfell teaser provided us the real heroes of this season and they are these three:

Jon Snow, Sansa Stark, and Arya Stark, poised to face the threats of Ice and Fire with their best weapons, and are the real heroes of Season 8 and the story at large.

Longclaw for Jon, Sansa has her wits and charm, intelligence, and realpolitik, I mean I could go on but you get the point. Last but not the least, Arya Stark, newly minted Night King Slayer, with her Valyrian steel dagger, with which she killed the NK and Needle.

Thanks to Arya being the NK Slayer, this picture makes a whole lot of sense now and I believe we will have Jon and Sansa take down the other two villains in the story. 3 villains vs 3 heroes.

Daenerys Stormborn:

The show actually teased that Jon and Sansa will stand against Daenerys Stormborn back in Season 6.

The S06E09 Battle of the Bastards Inside the Episode commentary by David Benioff, where he says:

“If you are one of the Lords of Westeros or one of her potential opponents in the wars to come, and you get word of what happened here in Meereen, you have to be pretty nervous because this is an unprecedented threat. You’ve got a woman who has somehow formed an alliance where she’s got a Dothraki horde, a legion of Unsullied, she’s got the mercenary army of the Second Sons, and she’s got three dragons, who are now pretty close to full-grown. So if she can make it all the way across the Narrow Sea and get to Westeros, who’s gonna stand in her way?”

over shots of Daenerys about to destroy Meereen and burning people, is immediately followed by this shot of Sansa and Jon, from the tent scene, prior to Battle of Bastards, where they discuss how to defeat Ramsay (another villain).

Sneaky.

In Season 8 so far, we have seen Sansa go toe-to-toe with Daenerys, either by making her displeasure known in feeding the “greatest army the world has ever seen” with the limited food and resources that Sansa has managed to gather for the North, or derisively asking “what do dragons eat anyway” or outright defying Daenerys in Jamie’s trial. I do not see this abating in the upcoming episodes. Sansa knows that the Dragon Queen is a threat to her home, her family, and the entire North and she will be using her smarts and political prowess to outplay Daenerys.

Jon, on the other hand, will be the one to go fight Daenerys in a Dance of the Dragons 2.0. Whether Jon kills Daenerys remains to be seen. The show has buried enough clues to allude to this happening. I have written about it here and here and I think there is a strong possibility that Jon kills Daenerys, irrespective of your beliefs in those alleged leaks.

In fact, these lines from ADWD, Jon XII, may have foreshadowed this:

Burning shafts hissed upward, trailing tongues of fire. Scarecrow brothers tumbled down, black cloaks ablaze.

"Snow," an eagle cried, as foemen scuttled up the ice like spiders.

Jon was armored in black ice, but his blade burned red in his fist. As the dead men reached the top of the Wall he sent them down to die again. He slew a greybeard and a beardless boy, a giant, a gaunt man with filed teeth, a girl with thick red hair. Too late he recognized Ygritte. She was gone as quick as she'd appeared. The world dissolved into a red mist. Jon stabbed and slashed and cut. He hacked down Donal Noye and gutted Deaf Dick Follard. Qhorin Halfhand stumbled to his knees, trying in vain to staunch the flow of blood from his neck. "I am the Lord of Winterfell," Jon screamed. It was Robb before him now, his hair wet with melting snow. Longclaw took his head off. Then a gnarled hand seized Jon roughly by the shoulder. He whirled …… and woke with a raven pecking at his chest.

Here we have Jon armored in black ice, which is very reminiscent of Daenerys’ dream from ASOS, Daenerys III:

That night she dreamt that she was Rhaegar, riding to the Trident. But she was mounted on a dragon, not a horse. When she saw the Usurper's rebel host across the river they were armored all in ice, but she bathed them in dragonfire and they melted away like dew and turned the Trident into a torrent. Some small part of her knew that she was dreaming, but another part exulted. This is how it was meant to be. The other was a nightmare, and I have only now awakened.

Jon kills Ygritte, a love interest, and Robb, his kin/cousin within the same dream. Daenerys is both a love interest and his kin/aunt.

Jon has also been referred to as the “shifting shadow” from Daenerys’s chapters...ASOS, Daenerys II.

“Sometimes she would close her eyes and dream of him, but it was never Jorah Mormont she dreamed of; her lover was always younger and more comely, though his face remained a shifting shadow.“

Melisandre in her visions sees Jon as a shifting shadow as well:

“The flames crackled softly, and in their crackling she heard the whispered name Jon Snow. His long face floated before her, limned in tongues of red and orange, appearing and disappearing again, a shadow half-seen behind a fluttering curtain. Now he was a man, now a wolf, now a man again.”

-ADWD, Melisandre I.

What’s interesting is that the show actually uses a “shadow” to allude to Jon.

Notice the focus on the shadow of Jon, right before he goes to behead Janos Slynt, someone who betrayed Ned Stark and was an enemy to House Stark. And dare I say, this reminds me of the shadow of Jamie from Bran’s visions right before he shoves the sword in the back of the Mad King Aerys.

Since Jon and Jamie are foils, Jon could end the story as a kinslayer and Queenslayer, just as Jamie started the story as the Kingslayer. We shall see whether it does come to pass or not. Additionally, Jon has refused to kill a woman twice before (Ygritte and Melisandre), maybe he ends up having to kill a woman this third time. Notably, Ygritte was a love interest, Melisandre tried seducing Jon, and now he is in a relationship with Daenerys.

Euron Greyjoy:

I would’ve loved for Theon to be the one to take down Euron but since he is dead, someone else will have to step up to bring this guy down.

Could Jon be the one? Or Arya?Or Yara?

Since both Euron and Daenerys have been associated with “Storm”, here are some clues that I found that I thought were interesting.

This next part is just wild speculation on my part.

Euron is introduced to us in S06E02 Home, where he kills his brother and King Balon Greyjoy and these are some of the things he says...

And this is what Jon says before he gets crowned KITN in S06E10 The Winds of Winter...

Littlefinger needles him in the crypts before Jon leaves for Dragonstone in S07E02 Stormborn and says this...

While Daenerys Stormborn has been associated with storms, Euron has been called the Storm and in this same episode called Stormborn, we see both Daenerys and Euron but not the Night King. Interesting don’t you think?

In fact, LF’s line could be applicable to Jon being the last best hope against either or both of these two “Storms”.

In fact, I think we may get a Daenerys Stormborn and Euron Greyjoy “Storm-Storm” alliance mainly because of this throwaway line from Yara while she is captive in the Silence at KL in S08E01...

to which Euron replies:

Now on the surface, this may seem that Yara, an ally of Daenerys is confident of Daenerys’s win over Cersei and Euron, who are current allies. To which Euron talks about sailing his fleet elsewhere??To Dragonstone maybe??? I believe the show is cluing us to the fact that Euron could possibly switch camps. I mean he is wild, unpredictable and who knows what his next move is?? However, he wants to marry the most beautiful woman in the world and just wants to side with the winning team.

In the promo for Episode 4, we see Euron going down on his knees and looks like he is proposing Cersei. If Cersei rejects his proposal, maybe he will switch sides over to Daenerys, whom he thinks has a better chance of winning and is the most beautiful woman in the world.

However, in the subtext, do we really think Daenerys’s side is the winning side????

If she is the main antagonist, then she has to lose, right? So what could this mean....that Euron switches Cersei’s camp and goes over to Daenerys’s camp thinking he is picking the winning side, only to end up on the losing side, when Daenerys finally loses.

Euron is a wild card and hopefully, next episode provides some solid clues regarding what’s going to happen.

There is also this scene from S07E05 Eastwatch, where the maesters of the Citadel are discussing Bran’s letter about the AOTD and one of the maesters mockingly says...”Don’t forget the prophet Lodos, who said that the drowned god will rise up and destroy Aegon the Conqueror”

Prophecy twist is when Aegon the Protector aka Jon Snow who has risen from the dead, destroys the Drowned God aka Euron Greyjoy.

Or the Drowned God aka Euron Greyjoy allies himself with Aegon the Conqueror come again aka Daenerys Stormborn to attempt to destroy KL???? It remains to be seen.

Why will Jon need to kill Euron??? Maybe just maybe Euron will be involved in kidnapping Sansa to KL. And Jon has already said (to LF) “Touch my sister and I’ll kill you myself”. That Chekhov’s gun is still waiting to go off.

I can’t help but think that the scene in the godswood in S08E01 Winterfell, in front of the heart tree, when Arya and Jon reunite and they talk about Sansa and Jon says that “I am her family too”, Arya says “don’t forget that” is foreshadowing for Jon to remember his first vow after he was brought back from the death that he made to Sansa...”I won’t ever let him touch you again, I will protect you, I promise”. Jon’s vow to protect Sansa will come into play in a moment when Sansa’s safety and her life is compromised. If Euron/GC come for her, then Jon’s vows to protect Sansa are applicable here as well.

This Jon/Arya scene then transitions to a shot of KL, where we think Sansa will get kidnapped to, and then we have shots of Cersei and Qyburn, the Golden Company with Euron and, finally we have scenes where a “sister” is held captive by Euron. And who comes to rescue his “sister” Yara?? Theon, who is a foil to Jon...I think these are interesting scene transitions. Again, since it’s rescuing one’s sister, it could be that Arya is the one who comes to rescue Sansa, together with Jon, and ends up being the one to kill Euron.

Having said all of that, I am really not sure. Mainly because I don’t think the show will let Jon kill both Euron and Daenerys. That’s a bit much for one guy, even if it’s Jon. And this is primarily where I think Arya may play a part and be the one to kill Euron. If Jon kills Daenerys, then Arya will kill Euron, again the objective remains the same, protect Sansa. That shot from the crypts teaser where Sansa is flanked by Arya one on side and Jon on the other side, with their weapons drawn in a protective stance, makes me think that both Jon and Arya will have to protect and save Sansa at some point.

Or the show could give this kill to Yara, Jamie, or even Brienne, who knows. Like I said, this part is pure speculation on my part so I could be totally wrong.

And finally Cersei Lannister:

I am counting on the show giving us a Sansa vs Cersei showdown, I feel like those two characters need to meet to complete the YMBQ story arc.

If the kidnapping plot does not happen, Sansa could come to KL to parlay with Cersei to strike up an alliance to take down Daenerys and defend the 7Ks.

These character posters have the same energy about them. Two Queens.

The show has been teasing us a Stark-Lannister alliance through its promos and teasers.

I could see Sansa and Cersei forming an alliance together to defeat Daenerys’s forces. The Golden Company will fight on behalf of Cersei and Sansa against Daenerys’s (and maybe Euron’s) armies.

In terms of Cersei’s demise, I am not putting too much stock on the Valonqar prophecy being actually true. Yes, Cersei has to die eventually, but D&D are Lena fanboys and I don’t think they will give her a gruesome on-camera death. In fact, I think Cersei will commit suicide or maybe poisoned.

When cornered, Cersei has either always managed to pull out an ace in the hole and outwit all her opponents in one fell-swoop like she did with House Tyrell in S06E10 when she blew up the sept

she turns suicidal and threatens to do something rash.

Case in point:

1. She was willing to poison herself and Tommen with the essence of nightshade poison at the Battle of Blackwater Bay when all looked lost until Tywin came and saved her.

2. When Tywin was forcing her to marry Loras, she threatened to “burn our House to the ground”.

The only thing Cersei loves is her children, Jamie, and her throne. The fact that she is drinking wine again means that she probably is no longer pregnant. Jamie, if he ends up with Brienne, is gone from her. Her throne is under attack from Daenerys’s forces. All of these may just force her to do:

Foreshadowing from S03E10 Mhysa, where she is talking to Tyrion to give Sansa a child so that she may have some happiness.

She does not have any more children left, so she may just throw herself from the highest window in the red keep.

Joffrey and Myrcella were poisoned, Tommen committed suicide by throwing himself from his window. Maybe Cersei will do the same. We shall see.

On the presumed “Targbowl” and the Dance of Dragons 02

Though I never read the interview, it’s been spread across Tumblr that Martin had once said that “a second Dance of Dragons” was coming, and it’s been deemed danceofdragon02 ever since. For the anti-Dany, of course, this meant targbowl. I kept from engaging in this sort of discourse, since I hadn’t read much about the infamous DoD. But then I did.

For one, though, you don’t even need to read TWOIAF or Fire and Blood to know that much: there’s been more than one Targaryen civil war. There’s been only one Dance of Dragons. What sets the Dance apart wasn’t that it was a war of succession (there’s been others), a Targaryen vs Targaryen conflict (there’s been others), or whatever else. We all know what sets it apart: it was the death of dragons, a great deal of them at the teeth and claws of other dragons. (Fire and Blood explicitly mark as such the chapters covering the events of the Dance.) If Martin tells me “there’s another Dance of Dragons coming”, my first thought will be of dragons plunging to their death as they rip off each other’s throats. And by “dragons”, I mean actual dragons, not Targaryen. Though, hey, it might be that my shipper goggles get in the way.

So I read forward, keeping an eye for any potential parallels or whatnot connecting the first Dance to the events we have so far in GOT. I’m already aware of certain anti metas presenting Jon Snow as the new “Green” faction (honestly, knowing what Aegon II was, I’m offended on Jon’s behalf) and Dany as the new “Black”. Here are the actual parallels I could (personally) find between the then and the now:

-Law of inheritance vs royal decree: by law of inheritance, the rightful heirs are Aegon II and Jon Snow/Aegon VI. By royal decree, the rightful heirs are Rhaenyra and Daenerys.

Actually, I think that’s all.

You know who actually has the most parallels with the greens? Forget any of the Targaryen, it’s the Lannisters. Queen Alicent’s rivalry with Rhaenyra? That’s Cersei with Margaery. Let’s take an eye from Luke Velaryon for having taken an eye from Alicent’s son? Let’s relieve Arya of a hand for the bite on Joffrey’s hand. The green council and disregard of the king’s will? Cersei tore Robert’s will and put an illegitimate king on the throne as well. Imprisonment and execution of “traitors” who remained loyal to Rhaenyra at court? Just ask Ned Stark. The Battle of the Burning Mill, between the Bracken and the Blackwood? Smells of the Whispering Woods. Aegon’s golden dragon Sunfyre? The golden dragon on the green’s banners? Which house, again, is the most associated with gold in Westeros? The battle at Rook’s Rest where Rhaenys and Meleys were killed? Battle of the Gold Road 02. A king with a questionable claim (Aegon II) sitting on the throne while a rival claimant (Rhaenyra) sits at Dragonstone? I’m gonna put a red smile on my uncle Stannis! And speaking of uncle vs nephew? Look no further than Alicent’s sons against their uncle Daemon. Or how about a king (Aegon II/Joffrey) naming his grandfather (Otto Hightower/Tywin Lannister) Hand of the King? Aegon II, vanishing from the Red Keep and leaving but a full chamber pot behind? Why am I thinking of Tywin on the privy? And Aegon II was killed at last by poisoned wine. Sounds familiar.

Lannister vs Stark, Lannister vs Baratheon, Lannister vs Tyrell, Lannister vs Targaryen, Lannister vs Lannister… for all those “parallels” with a Targaryen vs Targaryen internecine war, the Lannisters are a very common denominator, no? This isn’t to say that the “Black” don’t have parallels with the Lannisters as well: someone (I think it was @moonlitgleek ), put forward all the parallels between Cersei and Rhaenyra (there’s a lot), and the murder of prince Jaehaerys by Blood and Cheese (orchestrated by Rhaenyra’s husband) is just another Elia Martell, Aegon and Rhaenys.

Yet in any case, I’ll be damned if it’s Jon Snow who’s set up to echo the “green” faction. Yeah right.

Most likely, if parallels we must make, it’d be Jon and Daenerys both on the “black” side, opposing the Lannisters’s “green” side. And now that that’s out of the way, let’s look at actual dragons dancing.

The Cannibal, Grey Ghost and Sheepstealer

We’ll be reminded that there were three wild dragons on Dragonstone at the time of the Dance, namely, “the Cannibal” (because he’d eat dead dragons and hatchlings), “Grey Ghost” (a “pale grey-white” and “elusive” beast) and “Sheepstealer” (because he’d steal sheep Sherlock). In time, Sheepstealer would be mounted by a girl named Nettle. The other two remained wild.

This is where it gets interesting. The Cannibal is almost certainly a metaphor for the dragons of the Dance, eating themselves to near extinction. He’s also, for a time, believed to be Grey Ghost’s killer: sailors from Volantis catches glimpses of two dragons fighting above Dragonstone one night, and Grey Ghost’s carcass is discovered ashore, half eaten, the next day.

Only, plot twist: Aegon’s wounded dragon, Sunfyre, is the culprit, not the Cannibal.

This is were it gets even more interesting: Sunfyre, later on, dies on Dragonstone from wounds inflicted by a small dragon called “Moondancer”. Not too long ago, I posted a shorty about the ships Sun Chaser and Autumn Moon, who appear earlier in Fire and Blood, and how the sinking of Autumn Moon might or might not have been a subtle nod to Doreah’s story about the origins of dragons (you know, the one where the moon was an egg who cracked from the heat of the sun, etc, etc). Weeeell, the dance between Moondancer (get it?) and Sunfyre has to be another callback, then, right? Moondancer cracked indeed (she died on the spot), but she did drink Sunfyre’s “sun” (Sunfyre never flew again and died days later). Moondancer’s rider, Baela Targaryen, is – less I’m mistaken – the only dragonrider known so far to have survived a dragon’s fall during a battle. Which is pretty exceptional.

If I’m focusing on these events at Dragonstone, it’s because I feel that they encompass (symbolically, of course) the Dance of Dragons as a whole, and because they might in turn – perhaps – give us clues to parts of asoiaf/GOT endgames. Yes, I’m calling Sunfyre a “Cannibal”. Yes, I think he’s a foil to House Lannister: made of gold, a royal mount, but injured and weakened, with his days of glory far behind him. Yes, I think House Lannister might eat itself to extinction. And yes, that Sunfyre attacking Grey Ghost was a direct parallel to the Lannisters murdering the Starks.

As for Moondancer and Baela? I’ll leave that up to you guys 😉
