Finally won my 1st Balatro run thanks to the efforts of the Jokers: Splash, The Egg, Loyalty Card, Hologram & Swashbuckler. Continued through into Endless Mode but sadly failed midway through the 10th Ante. Finally winning at all was still extremely satisfying & I'm eager to crest the 1 MIL Chip Score threshold & reach the echelons of fully-fledged Balatro Scholar.
I dunno how many people out there are still on the fence with Balatro since it seems that those it appeals to either already have it or have at the very least Wishlisted it. If however you were still in the undecided camp, enjoy roguelike games but don't think there is anything to the Balatro hype - for me personally the game really is just that good & is now genuinely one of my favorites in the roguelike & roguelike deckbuilding genre, deserving of a spot right next to the likes of Slay the Spire, Slice & Dice, Hades & Spelunky.
My only regret is that I have yet to purchase a Steam Deck to play it on & as usual have to resort to booting up my laptop again & again solely to play it.

I’ve been playing a lot of roguelike deckbuilders. They’re really fun, but the problem I always have with engine-builders is that I want to have the engine. They’re engine-builders, not engine-havers. The engine gets thrown out once the run is over, win or lose. And I don’t just mean “I want the games to be longer so I can play with my engine more before throwing it out”, like an endless mode. I mean I want to put that engine in my garage so I can take it for a spin every now and then whenever I feel like it. I want a whole parking lot full of shiny game-winning engines, and I want to keep getting new ones and keep playing with the vintage ones.
I want the variety and replayability of a roguelike engine-builder, but not the impermanence of “hooray, you won, now just throw out that cool engine you built and we’ll pretend that never happened”.

New to Me - January 2023
New to Me #boardgames - January 2023 @gmtgames @StrongholdGames @eggertspiele @thematic_games @FlatoutGames @alderac @BGTables @atlasgames
It’s a brand new year and hopefully it will be better than last year. Though last year wasn’t too bad, compared to the two before. It’s January (or February, but we’re talking about January) and that means a new beginning where we’re not sure what all we’re going to play for the year. Last year I played 111 games. When January came around, I had no idea what games those would be! I do have…

Look at the market. There are potions, vessels, artefacts and rings. Some are too expensive and others just don't let me mix up powerful concoctions. The Finger Ring of the Additional Pinkie looks useful and the Ghost Beaker is also a promising start. So let me buy both, add them to my deck and then see if, on my next turn, they would allow me to join the league of PotionSlingers by Anthony Fasano.

New to Me - December 2022
New to Me #boardgames - December 2022 @gmtgames @wizkidsgames @AportaGames @days_of_wonder
December was a curtailed month for games. The last game I played was on December 13 (or December 16 if you count my Combat Commander ladder game I played on a Friday night). Between a Sunday Funday being snowed out, Christmas falling on a Sunday, as well as the last week before Christmas being all “work from home” (and thus no games got played at lunch), it was a short month! I still managed…

Critical PSA to Balatro or Mahjong or general Roguelike Deckbuilder Lovers for the amazing looking upcoming game ULTIMAHJONG!
ULTIMAHJONG is in the exact spirit of the likes of Balatro, Bingle Bingle & other casino/gambling-based roguelikes/deckbuilders that have been inundating the indie gaming scene recently and which I’ve personally been happily drowning in! In this case the base game is Mahjong & it’s straight up Riichi Mahjong based thankfully rather than the deluge of puzzle solitaire tile matching games that overwhelm Steam
Currently has playable demo on top of being Wishlistable. The dev predicts a release this year & I’m absolutely purchasing it on day one if for nothing else than to reward a halfway legitimate Mahjong game!
Speaking of the dev, they themselves ran through a few rounds of the early game to show it off:
youtube
Don’t know how many this post will reach but I’m happy to do my part to raise the population of Mahjong Enthusiasts out here on top of supporting innovative indie devs & their projects!
EDIT:
My luck finding out about these types of personally niche games seems to remain at an all time high because I’m obliged to update this post with a 2nd Roguelike Mahjong Deckbuilder on the horizon: AOTENJO
Similar to ULTIMAHJONG in intent but with its own distinct style & also has a free demo on Steam to try out.
One of AOTENJO’s major features is the inclusion of multiple regional mahjong variants to enrich the variety of the play experience!
Unlike in the case of ULTIMAHJONG, AOTENJO’s developer XO Cat’s YT channel (under the moniker NonToxicEel), lacks a similar in-depth breakdown of the game’s demo but does have a few videos attempting speedruns of the demo and are still a recommended watch to get the game flow & feel they’re aiming for:
youtube
Once again, I’m happy for the Mahjong renaissance we seem to be getting in the realm of gaming post-Mahjong Soul & Balatro!
