Derek Stevens had initially planned to build a resort on the site referred to as Fortunate Line, designed by Paul Steelman. That 12 months, Derek Stevens also purchased a 2-acre site throughout the street from the Las Vegas Membership, between the Plaza Resort & Casino and the principle Street Station. Derek Stevens initially considered renovating the Las Vegas Membership, but he disliked its design and determined to demolish it completely to build a brand new resort in its place.

Downtown Las Vegas Occasions Heart. fat168slot.com explained the resort's title, itemizing examples of earlier well known Las Vegas properties and their institution dates and founders, akin to, "Circa 1941, Jackie Gaughan, El Cortez. The video additional stated that the announcement of Circa's name would in the future be referred to as, "Circa January 2019." Different names had been considered, including Overland, which was the original identify of the Las Vegas Club; and The Mint, which was the name of a former property adjoining to the Las Vegas Membership.

This raised FAA concerns about height and airspace because of the undertaking's proximity with the North Las Vegas Airport. Derek Stevens meant for the resort to be opened previous to 2021 for tax benefits. The extra property opened new possibilities for a bigger model of the Stevens' upcoming resort, and the brothers took extra time to determine specifics about the brand new venture. The property would turn into the positioning of the brand new resort's eventual parking garage.

 Medina Wasl: Connecting Town 16mm film transferred to video, 2018, color, sound, 31 min

As a film project, Medina Wasl: Connecting Town glances at the history of orientalist traditions, landscapes and imagination, as it has developed and persisted over time in the California Mojave desert, and as the lineage of today’s militarization of the Middle East. The introduction of date palm to the US around 1902, led to the Indio Date Festivals of the 1940s-1980s—a tradition continued today as “The Riverside County Fair and Date Festival” with Sahara Trails, Caravansaries, Camel and Ostrich Races, and Arabian Night Pageants. Only a short drive from Indio are several simulacra of Middle Eastern towns at U.S. military training centers. Through the lens of Said’s Orientalism, the project studies the role and history of fiction and speculation in the constructs of the Middle East, and the continued violence enacted through conflating languages, landscapes, cultures and geographical territories in relation to the War on Terror. Medina Wasl: Connecting Town was shot in the small towns of Mecca and Thermal, CA, as well as US the Fort Irwin National Military Training Center or “The Box.” Also known as “Little Afghanistan” or “Medina Wasl,” The Box houses multiple Middle Eastern combat towns, providing simulated battlefields in a climate resembling that of Iraq’s. Originally build during the invasion of Afghanistan, “Medina Wasl” is a “Middle Eastern” town donning the Afghan flag on its multiple buildings, whose name desperately translates to “Connecting Town” in Arabic. Dressed as an Iranian soldier from the war with Iraq, I documented the areas in the California Desert that have been historically built to resemble the Middle East for industrial, militarized and entertainment purposes, while all three inseparable, overlapping and interwoven. The footage is overlaid with oral interviews I have conducted with U.S. war veterans about their memories of the landscape in the different parts of the Middle East where they were deployed. In this way, the film is intended to blend fiction and reality, dream and waking life as testimony to continued violence. It creates a surreal collage connecting the two regions across the decades through war and colonialism, while the palm tree continues to link my visual memories of the war-torn Shatt al-Arab (during the Iran-Iraq war) to the militarized Southern California desert.

RECIPE: Vegan Seafood Pasta (from Emily Lavieri-Scull, as featured in Eat for the Planet Cookbook)

“This dish is filled with lots of mushrooms and delicious umami flavors, similar to some of the seafood pasta dishes that I loved growing up,” says Emily. “Replicating the flavors and textures of tuna, anchovies, and clams turned out to be relatively easy, and now I can enjoy my take on a childhood favorite.” For this recipe, try a chunky pasta, such as cavatappi. Linguine works well, too.

Serves 4

Salt

1 pound (455 g) any pasta

2 tablespoons vegan butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

3 to 4 green onions, trimmed and thinly sliced

3 to 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 pound (455 g) mixed mushrooms, such as cremini, shiitake, and oyster, roughly chopped

½ cup (25 g) thinly sliced sundried tomatoes

3 tablespoons capers

1 sheet nori, crumbled or finely chopped

Juice of 1 lemon

1 tablespoon liquid aminos or soy sauce

Ground black pepper

¼ to ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

1 cup (30 g) chopped parsley

Nutritional yeast or vegan parmesan, for serving

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta as the label directs. Drain, reserving ½ cup (120 ml) of the cooking liquid.

In a cast-iron pan or nonstick skillet, heat the butter and oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes, or until it begins to soften. Add the green onions and stir, cooking until the onions start to brown, about 5 minutes.

Add the garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add the mushrooms and stir occasionally, letting them sit so they brown and caramelize, about 5 minutes.

Add the tomatoes, capers, nori, lemon juice, liquid aminos, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes, if using, and stir, letting the flavors come together, about 5 minutes. Start slowly adding some of the pasta cooking liquid to reach the desired consistency. Add the parsley right before folding the sauce in with the pasta. Top with nutritional yeast or vegan parmesan and serve warm.
