Flatpak is pretty good at what Flatpak is trying to be, which is that it's trying to be not just a distribution format but a full packaging system with its own way of managing multiple runtimes for different applications in their sandboxes Appimage isn't trying to do that so it Just Works but of course doesn't have any of the potential benefits of Flatpak.

Flatpak's sandbox approach is where you run into problems, at least at the moment. It's extremely common for Flatpak applications to have weird broken functionality because they're flatpak versions of programs designed for normal packaging, and so they try to access a resource and that resource is either not available or a mini version provided by the runtime that isn't very useful. Like, flatpak is currently mainly aimed at desktop applications (I don't think it'll ever be too popular for server stuff, docker already has that covered well) but flatpak applications frequently have horribly broken text rendering and desktop integration. Improvements to pipewire and Wayland are slowly fixing this but Flatpak is often fighting uphill against the fact that it's packaging software made to run in normal userspace.

If you're planning on running your whole desktop in Flatpak this gets better, but as mentioned, many Flatpak applications are horrendously broken in some crucial way, so it's not the most appealing concept. I tried running Firefox and a few other programs from Flatpak for a while and text rendering and system integration issues ended up making me go back.

Appimage doesn't try to do any of this, it's just portable executables, but it's a handy way to distribute software that is kind of awkward to build and run because it has very specific needs. For the moment, in a world where most of your packages are coming from your distribution anyway, AppImage is a nice way to handle a few edge cases without too many extra steps and without having to administrate a whole Flatpak ecosystem. I wouldn't ever want to have most of my software installed as appimages.

Conceptually I don't even mind flatpak but despite dramatically simplifying everything about packaging, it still develops inscrutable issues that have long been solved by traditional packaging. The trade-off is of course that traditional packaging is basically a huge waste of time and effort for 90% of desktop packages.

Appimage has actually been pretty good for this because it's less focused on isolation but part of the appeal of flatpak is the whole flatpak composability thing flathub wants you to do.

Launch Your Own Presto Cluster with Terraform

Launching a distributed system is not an easy task, unlike the simple command-line tools or desktop application. It takes time to install software and prepare the server instances. There are many automation tools to make it easy to launch a complicated system in public cloud services like AWS. Terraform is a tool to enable us to achieve infrastructure as a code on the major cloud services. It accelerates not only the process to provision production servers but also the validation of new features or bug fixes you have created.

I have used docker-presto-cluster for testing purposes. But it is necessary to launch multiple node cluster under the environment close to more real cases. I have found Terraform is capable of provisioning the Presto cluster in AWS quickly. This post will introduce new module I have created to provision out-of-the-box Presto cluster in AWS environment.

terraform-aws-presto is a module to create all resources to launch a Presto cluster in the AWS environment. It uses Docker images to build and distributed by myself and AWS Fargate to start a cluster in the ECS environment.

All resources created by the module are illustrated as follows.

It creates a public subnet and private subnet inside the specific VPC. The default CIDR block of VPS is 10.0.0.0/16. ALB connecting to the coordinator is located in public subnet so that anyone can submit a query to the cluster. All services of Presto (coordinator and worker) are running inside the private subnet. No one can access Presto instances directly.

There are two task definitions in ECS service. One is for the coordinator, and the other is for workers. You can control the number of worker instances by using the Terraform variable.

Usage

For example, this is the minimum code to launch a Presto cluster with two worker instances in the default VPC.

As the module returns the coordinator DNS name, you can get access to the coordinator through ALB.

The module downloads the Docker images distributed in lewuathe/presto-coordinator and lewuathe/presto-worker. You can control the version of Presto installed in the cluster by changing the presto_version input variable.

To create the module, “Terraform: Up and Running: Writing Infrastructure as Code“ was a good reference to learn how Terraform works in general. Take a look if you are interested in Terraform module.

As far as I tried, the module will launch a Presto cluster in a few minutes because it’s minimal and straightforward. You may find something insufficient or not useful. Please give me any feedback or pull requests if you have any requests.

  Requirements for virtualization 

When people talk about virtualization, they’re usually referring to server virtualization, which means partitioning one physical server into several virtual servers, or machines. Each virtual machine can interact independently with other devices, applications, data and users as though it were a separate physical resource.

Different virtual machines can run different operating systems and multiple applications while sharing the resources of a single physical computer. And, because each virtual machine is isolated from other virtualized machines, if one crashes, it doesn’t affect the others.  

There are many types of virtualizations

·       Network virtualization splits available bandwidth in a network into independent channels that can be assigned to specific servers or devices.

·       Application virtualization separates applications from the hardware and the operating system, putting them in a container that can be relocated without disrupting other systems.

Hypervisor

 A hypervisor is a process that separates a computer’s operating system and applications from the underlying physical hardware. Usually done as software although embedded hypervisors can be created for things like mobile devices.

  The hypervisor drives the concept of virtualization by allowing the physical host machine to operate multiple virtual machines as guests to help maximize the effective use of computing resources such as memory, network bandwidth and CPU cycles.

    Difference between virtualization and emulation

 ·      With virtualization, the virtual machine uses hardware directly, although there is an overarching scheduler. As such, no emulation is taking place, but this limits what can be run inside virtual machines to operating systems that could otherwise run atop the underlying hardware. That said, this method provides the best overall performance of the two solutions.

·      With emulation, since an entire machine can be created as a virtual construct, there are a wider variety of opportunities, but with the aforementioned emulation penalty. But, emulation makes it possible to, for example, run programs designed for a completely different architecture on an x86 PC. This approach is common, for example, when it comes to running old games designed for obsolete platforms on todays modern systems. Because everything is emulated in software, there is a performance hit in this method, although todays massively powered processors often cover for this.
