The Laws of Rewinding

Rewinds are not allowed to be recognizable to the unwinds they come from.

Rewinds are not allowed to be made with a specific purpose, this includes for the military. 

Rewinds must be mentally evaluated before joining the horde.

Every Rewind is equal to and has the rights of a human, the only exception is that they cannot be held responsible for storks.

If these conditions are not met the Rewind will be divided and the unit will be inspected.

Rotting in a jail cell for the rest of her life, until she isn’t. Eating terrible prison food, trying to get along with the others, until she isn’t. 

One day, after the All Saint’s Uprising many people in medical uniforms come to her jail cell.

“What is it?” She groans.

“Miss Griswold, you are aware of what the technology of the Rifkin-Skinner Biobuilder brings to our world.”

“Yes.” She grumbles, angry at herself that the technology she and Proactive Citizenry tried to hide for so many years eventually made its way to the light.

“And that we won’t be needing unwind parts anymore.”

“Yes.”

“We will need to do something with the rest of the body parts, Rifkin Medical Instruments is already starting to put children back together, but we’ll need to do something about the rest of the extra bits.”

“So what will you do with the spare parts?”

“We were hoping you could help us with that.”

Roberta looks up, there’s more medical people and guards around the cell.

“The directions on how to rewind parts have been corrupted,” The doctor paused. “You’re the only one we could track down who knew about rewinding. We were hoping you would help us recycle the spare parts.”

Cam and the many other rewinds she’s made, were once seen as immoral monstrosities, and now they want to make more of them so they don't have to make a giant graveyard of spare flesh. She sighs,

“Fine, but when I’m done making them, I do not want them interacting with me at all.”

“I’m sure that can be arranged.” 

Rewind StaHo 1, half Medical Institute, half State Home, this is what it’s supposed to become. Roberta stands in front of many body parts and multiple surgeons.

“How many bodies can we make out of this?” A surgeon asks.

“You could make about five people.” She looks to the surgeon, “And remember, they’re not just living bodies, they’re human.”

She pushes the rolling carts towards different operation tables choosing carefully what parts will go with others. Tithe brain parts with criminals’ might lead to mental problems that will need tweaking, but it will be better than putting criminal parts with Awols.

Once she’s done choosing certain parts she goes to stand at the front of the room, opposing the door.

“Most of you were surgeons in the unwinding division, if you find unwinding simple, then you’ll find rewinding to be as simple. You’ll see that there are anesthesiologists around you, rewinding can’t be done while the parts are still active, they must be put to sleep. I’ll be in the room to answer your questions, but I have faith you all know what you’re doing.”

The surgeons get to work, stitching, mending, and cropping, all in order to make reasonably looking at humans with different skin tones.

“Once you're done making the bodies, you’ll be filling them back up with blood, it’s blood type O, obviously.” Roberta directs.

Roberta leaves the room, heading up to what is now her office, there were a few things transferred over from a safe that she has yet to discover. It’s mostly old notebooks, pens, and fake plants that used to sit at her desk, but there’s a flipped-over picture frame at the bottom of one of the boxes. She recognizes the colour of the frame and braces herself to flip it over, a picture of Cam is on the other side of it.

“Does this make you happy Cam? Or… would you be disappointed?” She says to the picture frame. She rolls her eyes at herself for even thinking that talking to a picture of Cam would give her some kind of solace.

She puts the picture frame back once she’s taking everything out. She doesn’t need to see Cam anymore. He’s somewhere else without her, who could blame him? In their last interaction, she tried to kill him, it wasn’t up to her, but she still did what she was told to do. She’ll always do what she’s told to do, she is the Russian ballerina who will bend over backwards in order to please those around her to get higher in the food chain.

But this time it’s different, this time she’s in charge.

A day goes by with the rewinds already up and running, they are isolated per Roberta’s request. Until they can talk and vocalize properly she’s decided it’s best that they don’t see each other.

Roberta has decided that there’s probably going to be a ruleset to how the Rewinds are made. There should be equal opportunity for all of them, so none of them will be made for a single purpose, no matter how much their deaths would be seen as small casualties in the military. They will get the rights and responsibilities of humans, but Roberta can’t imagine unwinds being friendly with babies, so if the Rewinds may ever live outside the StaHo they can’t be held responsible for a stork. There are a few things missing from the list that she can’t exactly pinpoint yet. She leaves her ideas in a notebook in front of her computer for later revision.

There’s a nurse scurrying around outside, pacing in and out of Roberta’s vision. Roberta can’t see what the nurse’s face looks like from the blurred glass encasing the front of her office, so she gets up from her chair and opens the door. The nurse is biting her nails, Roberta frowns.

The nurse squeaks at her upon meeting her gaze.

“Ah! I’m so sorry to disturb you, but, umm they invited this one psychologist in and put all five of the rewinds in the same room, they seem to be getting along, but I told them they should alert you about this, but they didn’t listen.”

Roberta’s eyes go wide.

“Is there any way I can see them without them seeing me?”

“We’re watching them from a one-way mirror.”

“Lead me there.”

Roberta couldn't believe it, not only did not ask her permission to put the rewinds together, but they invited this psychologist who, mind them, had probably never interacted with people so complex. They enter a room to the side of another, there’s a long rectangle of windows all across the wall. Several people speak to a man who watches the Rewinds. Roberta walks over to him, parting the way without saying or doing anything. She clears her throat.

“I’m assuming you're the psychologist I wasn’t told about.”

The man turns to her smiling, pulling out his hand.

“Dr. Roberta, it’s a pleasure to meet you! My apologies for not alerting you of my presence here today, though I suppose it’s better than having Mr. Comprix here.”

“... What?”

“I heard they were trying to get Mr. Comprix here, he very vocally declined over the phone.”

Roberta’s blood starts to boil, she takes a breath of air before continuing the conversation. 

“It makes sense, last I met him he was not too pleased by the sight of the rest of the rewinds made for his army.” She pauses for a moment, “At least I think he was.”

She looks over to the rewinds who babble to each other.

“Some quite riveting conversations they’re having don’t you think?”

“They’re just trying to understand each other.”

“Which is good for them, understanding each other in a world full of prejudice for them might be one of the only ways they’ll be able to get support.”

Roberta sighs looking back at the Rewinds. It possibly will be one of the ways they’ll get support. She’s sure the publicity of Cam has probably done a lot to sway the people’s opinions on them, but they’ve still got a long way to go.

Days turn into weeks, and weeks turn into months. Cam eventually came to visit the rewinds much to Roberta’s dismay, he kept coming for every new batch of rewinds they put out. 

“What’s the new update this week?” She can hear him say.

“This week we’ve used the biobuilder to help connect certain parts to each other.” A doctor would respond.

Hearing Cam again doesn’t do her much good, she’s not really supposed to hear Cam, her office is farthest from the ward area, but there are the odd times.

Roberta stands at the front of the surgical room again, presenting new machinery to the room.

“These are neuro nanites, they’ve been programmed to zap out the bad thoughts out of the brain, I’ll ask you to create the brain first and let a nanite loose on it while you make the body, YOU MUST take off the nanite before putting the brain in the body. They aren’t like the ones that help you remember things, they can cause some actual destruction.”

“How bad is the destruction?” One of the surgeons asks.

“Brain frying.”

Instead of leaving the room this time, she watches over it, making sure that each nanite is removed before their heads are stitched up, then only does she leave.

Going back to her desk, she does her daily work before hopping onto news sites for any new things to do with her Rewinds. Something catches her eye, there’s an article about Mason Michael Starkey, someone whom Proactive Citizenry worked with until they sold him off to a black market dealer for great profits. ‘MASON MICHAEL STARKEY FOUND DEAD AND DISMEMBERED IN SARNIA, CANADA’ The article read. Reading more into the article she finds the alleged buyer tried to transport the body back to the United States of America before being caught with the body parts on the border. Mason was apparently brain-dead before his unwinding, terrible, but there’s something at the end of the article that makes her almost choke on her own spit. ‘Scientists say that while some of his body parts are still in okay condition to be rewound, the only parts that they will use are his face panels as they don't retain any harmful muscle memory’. They’re going to Mason’s part for rewinding, they’re going to use Mason Micheal Starkey’s parts for rewinding. Before she has time to react to the information before her, a doctor bursts into her office.

“Did you hear the news about, y’know, him?”

“Mason?”

“Yes.”

“When will we be getting the face panels?”

“Now! They’ve just arrived at the back door!”

Roberta and her team of surgeons sit in front of a whole bunch of body parts, including the face panels. Roberta’s eyes dart everywhere, millions of ideas pop into her mind of what they can make out of Mason. 

“I’ve got a few ideas on what we can make,” She looks up at her team, “Any volunteers to put them together?”

The room is silent.

“I didn’t expect any. Fire up the Biobuilder, we’ll need torsos, and I’m doing facial modifications to Mason.”

“What for?” One of them asks.

“He’ll be a bit recognizable with… those dead eyeballs, but I’m intending on changing that face shape a bit.”

Then that last obvious law clicks in Roberta’s brain about rewinds. Rewinds are not allowed to be recognizable to the unwinds they come from.
