While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
The Percy Jackson series got off to a wobbly start but a sequel had every opportunity to expand on what worked and ditch the rest. Now that we’d gotten over all the introductions, we’d be able to dig in properly. Maybe we could explore a more complicated story, get to know the characters better and see them grow the way the heroes in the Harry Potter series did with each subsequent chapter. Unfortunately, your hopes for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters are dashed away by Marc Guggenheim's terrible screenplay. By the time it gets to a conclusion that promises “we’ve got even more coming in the third one!” you want to tell it not to bother.
Set some time after the events of the first movie, Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is the son of Poseidon, a demi-god who trains at Camp Half-Blood with the sons and daughters of the Greek Pantheon. His best friends are Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), a satyr, and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), the daughter of Athena. When the magical tree that protects the camp from attacks begins to die, the trio chooses to defy their elders’ orders and go on a quest to save it. To do so, they must travel to the Sea of Monsters and recover the Golden Fleece. Tagging along is Percy’s newly-discovered half-brother, a cyclops named Tyson (Douglas Smith). While Percy wonders if he’s up to the task or simply a one-quest wonder, the cyclops’ presence worries Annabeth.
The problems are immediately recognizable. Percy worries he’s not the hero of legend because he’s only saved the world once? How can anyone relate to his “woe is me” attitude? Similarly, Annabeth not trusting Tyson just doesn’t feel right. It’s pretty obvious her aversion to the one-eyed dummy stems from some past traumatic experience but the film fails to make us understand why she’s all secretive about it. We see cyclopses act villainous but those are big, adult ones that tower over our heroes. Will Tyson even grow up to be that size? He seems too stupid to pose any threat. She simply comes off as racist.
It begins on the wrong foot and from there, things don’t get much better. We learn of a prophecy. We're told a child of the three elder gods will either save Olympus, or destroy it (what’s the alternative?) while battling with Luke Castellan (Jake Abel), the villainous son of Hermes that served as the antagonist of the previous film. I could’ve sworn he was dead, but sure. Now I know what you’re thinking. Hmm. What a coincidence. Didn't we just meet a new son of Poseidon mere moments ago? I won’t say too much but let's put it this way. This is a baaaad screenplay that makes obvious mistakes. Tyson’s part in this story is one of them.
As our heroes travel outside of Camp Half-Blood, they obviously have to travel inconspicuously among Muggles, which means they have to disguise Tyson using a magic potion… that Annabeth brought along with her for no reason? Their means of travel is a discount-version of the Night Bus from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the price of admission is a torrent of horrible jokes the film thinks are really funny. You tolerate them, always reminding yourself of that titular Sea of Monsters. "Once we get there, things will turn around." I’ve got some bad news for you. There aren’t a whole lot of monsters in this movie and when we encounter them, they’re kraken-sized disappointments. Every confrontation between the heroes and the villains feels like a piece of cake. At least the special effects are pretty good but this whole adventure feels like it’s missing something.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is nothing more than a knockoff of the Harry Potter films. Whether this is the case with the books as well I can’t tell but if it was implied with the last film, it’s cripplingly obvious here. Percy Jackson 2 puts all of its weight on familiar tropes and plot threads like its left leg’s just been chopped off. It can’t even manage to do that right. Numerous plot threads and characters are introduced and given no purpose. This film's intended audience is too smart to fall for such a lacklustre sequel. (February 14, 2020)

This is fun. DC Douglas might not be actively racist, but he sure was super concerned about not having any Black people in the "Wesker Children" during the BLM protests in 2020 because he was "really" concerned about shooting Black Cops in RE2R when he streamed it. If he hadn't hidden it (which he did) then you would be able to hear the constant worrying about how many Black folks were in the game.
Abelism? DC? No way.
I only had to tell him not to use the r-slur to describe an Albert Wesker render that he thought was ugly to a group of Neurodivergent kids who had been called that slur a lot in the 90's.
Don't believe me? Here's him using it as late as 2010 (I scolded him in 2020 or early 2021, pre April when we had out falling out) on Wikipedia. Matt Dusing aka Matt Haunter also used the word "because retarded is a medical term" like baby just because you have low IQ doesn't mean the rest of us do just because we're autistic, silly Matt.
DC Douglas also routinely misgendered one of the two trans people in our streaming group. Victor Lindemann is also trans, but he passed as soon as he switched pronouns to he/him and came out. There was another person who was also Trans, and DC routinely misgendered him by using she/her pronouns despite said person being out as Trans for most of their life, including when DC met them. He would often try to struggle to gender them correctly publicly and get it right sometimes, but when alone or trans friend wasn't around, he would openly say "she/her" and once went so far to say that, "gender is visually coded and you look like a pretty girl!"
I hate to be the one to tell you that his anti-transphobia and ableism is performative.
Just don't believe most of the things out of his mouth. He was raised by Betty Malicoat, who is a new age healer who charges out the butt for her "advice" and let me tell you, she didn't do a good job raising him. :(
“This program takes a provocative look at the power and role of technology in our lives today, as well as what role it may play in the future. PCs, e-mail, video games, interactive TV, electronic shopping malls and the Internet are all an important part of ‘Cyberville.’ But are these advances moving us farther away from the real world outside our doors? Is technology and ‘techno-lust’ causing us to lose sight of who we are and where we came from? Instead of dealing with our growing societal problems, are we focusing on a future ‘cyber-utopia’? This program explores advances in technology across a wide spectrum, as well as their implications for our society, economy, and culture. Among the many technology proponents and critics featured in the program are: Doug Rushkoff, author of Cyberia; Kristen Spence, Senior editor of Wired magazine; Robert Abel, CEO of Synapse Technology; Strauss Zelnick, multimedia executive; Douglas Trumbull, special effects creator; Aris Janigian, philosopher; and a self-described teenage ‘cyberbrat’.“
Dreading Thanksgiving? Wondering how you're going to survive the family-oriented frenzy that fills up the end of the year? Next week on 11/8, join me for a live conversation with filmmaker Douglas Buck, who made one of the Most Shocking Movies Ever (FAMILY PORTRAITS: AN AMERICAN TRILOGY) on horror in the domestic space! I programmed this as a little pre-holiday, anti-holiday moment of catharsis for those of us who get a little bummed out around this time of year. Doug is one of the smartest guys around, and when I saw him speak at the MoMA recently, I knew I had to bring him to Miskatonic. We'll be talking about his influences, which range wildly from Bergman to Craven; his relationships with other firebrands like Abel Ferrara and Gasper Noe; his thoughts on family-oriented horror from THE HILLS HAVE EYES to HEREDITARY; and why one critic called him "Todd Solondz on crack". It's going to be a great time, and I sure hope you can make it!
PS A little bird told me that Doug's movie FAMILY PORTRAITS is going to be streaming soon on The Satanic Temple TV, the TST's streaming service. They have all kinds of interesting stuff there, and it's no surprise to me that they're programming such a cool, challenging film. FAMILY PORTRAITS is known to cause fainting and vomiting wherever it plays, so this will be your big chance to throw up and pass out in the comfort of your own home! And for a good reason, this time.

"It was barely a second of contact before he audibly reacted and threw it across the room, where it hit the wall and shattered. Chase barely even realized he was flapping his hands and humming until he stopped to try and wipe away the feeling."
or,
Chase hates the texture of something Donald started putting on his inventions, Douglas understands. (Chase doesn't)
(fic under the cut!)
Chase knows he's autistic. It wasn't hard to figure it out, and even though it took him until he got that upgrade from Douglas, updating his internal database organization system and adding an absurd amount of information, as well as that same hotspot that Marcus had which allows him to pretty much google anything in his head on a whim. It took him two days to pour through all of the new information, at some point coming across the new database on mental and physical illnesses. It took five minutes to diagnose himself and move on.
The point of explaining this is so that you understand the level of mental pain he experienced just now. He’s helping Douglas reorganize a storage room in Mission Command and he grabbed something only for it to feel like it was sticking to his skin and ripping it off. Felt like he was never going to get that feeling off.
It was barely a second of contact before he audibly reacted and threw it across the room, where it hit the wall and shattered. Chase barely even realized he was flapping his hands and humming until he stopped to try and wipe away the feeling.
And despite the lingering yuck on his skin, he pauses to look up at Douglas with wide eyes because crap he's not supposed to stim around other people- he's not supposed to stim at all, he's been effectively (not really) reprogrammed and trained out of it by Mr. Davenport.
Yet, when he looks at Douglas who's looking between him and the invention he just destroyed, he doesn't look irritated. In fact, the confusion Chase saw at first morphs into understanding after a moment of staring, "Yeah, same," he hums, "It's why I put you over there. Well, I'll make Bree do it, then."
He's grinning like he's told a joke, one that Chase should understand, yet the second youngest Davenport continues to stare at his father in confused panic. Surely he should be getting yelled at, right? Mr. Davenport would be lecturing him to death and back for that. And yet, Douglas looks more concerned than anything else.
"You can go wash your hands if ya' need, I'll be here."
"What?"
Douglas looks back to him, having returned to start pulling machines and boxes off the shelf like nothing was wrong, "It's the fabric he's got on the bottom, right? The like, sticky stuff," he rubs his fingers together as if he was demonstrating, "Feels like it's trying to rip my soul out, you can go wash your hands to get it off. Or just work over there." He mock shivers when he explains the exact thing Chase just experienced, then gestures towards another section in the room, "I checked, none of them have it. Just the newer stuff."
"You're not mad?" Chase brings himself so he's standing properly, still tingling uncomfortably hand going ignored.
His father/uncle shrugs, "Eh, I wouldn't have thrown it like that, but I still don't wanna touch it. The point is I get it, kid. Why would I yell at you?"
"Mr. Davenport yells at me when I react to textures, he hates it," Chase hums, shaking out his hand again and rubbing it on his pants in the hopes the texture of his jeans would feel rough enough to get it off.
Douglas rolls his eyes, "Yeah, 'course he does, he's an allistic dickhead," he shrugs, returning to pulling a box off the shelf that he's visibly struggling to lift, "Doesn't get it, he used to get after me because I wouldn't stop moving. ‘Douglas won't stop whining!' this and 'He keeps hittin’ me!' that. He was my sensory wall for a while, but he kept yellin’ at me when I grabbed him."
Chase scans through his knowledge on Autism in search of the term Allistic, finding its definition as basically equating to 'not autistic.' It's a good, brief, distraction to the knowledge that his father’s autistic and that Mr. Davenport might be in the wrong in trying to train Chase out of it. "Why does it bother him?" he's gotta ask, because surely there's some sort of reason, right? He doesn’t mentally torture his brother and kid for no reason, right?
"Maybe because you remind him of me, or he's just an asshole. That's my best theory. Neurotypicals baffle me," Douglas looks back to him from over a shelf, glancing at the stimming he's doing with the hand that touched the invention and causing the discreet stimming to stop, "Seriously, Chase, go wash your hands. I'll call Bree down to help."
Chase glances around, he barely made a dent in his portion of the room- they started maybe half an hour ago and he feels bad just. Giving up, especially over the feeling of a fabric, "It's fine, I can keep working."
"Chase, go wash your hands."
"Douglas, I'm fine. It wasn't that bad," he wipes his hand off one last time, then reaches for the next thing on the shelf.
It's got the same fabric on the bottom, and the moment he's grabbed it with both hands he feels the same way he feels when he's about to have a panic attack. It feels like his entire body is preparing for a fight and he's letting go of it with an involuntary grunt of discomfort to wipe his hands off in his pants again.
"Chase," Douglas sighs, leaning around the shelves, "Don't make me get all dad mode on you."
Chase opens his mouth to reply, but instead he makes another grunting sound and shakes out his hands, staring at the offending machine. It feels so much worse than the first time, like they're stacking on top of each other in the most uncomfortable and emotionally painful way possible. He wants to follow Douglas' advice, somewhere inside, yet the rest of him is determined to keep helping. To prove that he's not so pathetic he has to stop because the texture of something bugged him.
He knows Douglas is watching him instead of continuing to work, can't hear the sound of boxes moving or Douglas' footsteps. Yet, he reaches back up and grabs the machine off the shelf, refusing to drop it and carrying it across the room to its new designated spot.
The feeling has crawled up his arms, his brain is screaming that he's in danger and his chest is twisting painfully. But he did it, he did his job. Why does Douglas just look disappointed?
Bree's in the doorway, watching him with furrowed brows and glancing between him and their father, "Upstairs, now. We'll talk later," Douglas points, and it's not the reaction Chase expected even remotely. Mr. Davenport almost always replies with a ‘Now was that so hard?’, or just an irritated sigh and an eye roll.
