The Manitoba government is looking to bring in tougher penalties for people who are convicted of impaired driving offences that cause injury or death. A bill introduced in the legislature Thursday would impose a lifetime licence suspension on a driver convicted of two such offences within a 10-year period. That’s an increase from the current 10-year suspension. The bill would also prohibit people convicted of these offences from driving with any alcohol in their blood for seven years for a first offence.

Texas drunken drivers who kill a child’s parent or guardian in a crash are now liable to pay child support, according to legislation that went into effect Friday.

Texas House Bill 393, also known as Bentley's Law, was first filed Nov. 14 of last year. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill June 2.

According to the law, intoxicated manslaughter culprits are only on the hook until the child turns 18 years old or finishes high school.

The amount of child support depends on multiple factors, including the child's educational needs, medical needs and any reasonable child care costs. The standard of living that the child is used to is also considered.

Anyone who is unable to make payments due to incarceration may be eligible for a payment plan.

I love this new law. Drunk drivers take away so many lives, including taking away a child’s parent(s). Other states should do the same.

Motorists in New Brunswick will be subject to stiff new penalties for impaired driving beginning Jan. 1. Changes to the province’s Motor Vehicle Act give police discretion to issue an immediate roadside suspension to impaired drivers, or to lay charges under the Criminal Code. Previously, police could only lay criminal charges, sending drivers through a lengthy process in the province’s clogged court system. Under the new rules, people with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above, or who refuse to give a breath sample, will get an immediate three-month licence suspension.
