Vincent D’Onofrio, Alan Tudyk, Brent Spiner Among Additions to FAN EXPO Cleveland, April 12-14

Eight standout celebrities from genres as varied as sci-fi, action and children’s programming have been added to the guest roster at FAN EXPO Cleveland, April 12-14 at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland. Among the newly announced stars are Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil, “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”), Alan Tudyk (Star Wars, “Firefly”), Brent Spiner (“Star Trek: The Next Generation,” Independence Day), the “Ahsoka” duo of Eman Esfandi and Diana Lee Inosanto, Ethan Suplee (“My Name is Earl,” American History X), Jeff Ward (“One Piece,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) and Butch Hartman (creator, “The Fairly OddParents,” “HobbyKids Adventures”).

The eight join a strong previously announced slate that includes The Lord of the Rings “four hobbits” Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, Danny Trejo (Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn) and Charlie Cox (“Daredevil,” “Boardwalk Empire”), legendary director Sam Raimi, “Charmed” star Rose McGowan, “Harry Potter” standout Matthew Lewis and Jason Lee (“My Name is Earl,” The Incredibles).

In addition to starring as “Wilson Fisk” opposite Cox in the Netflix series “Daredevil,” Vincent D’Onofrio has a resume of more than 100 roles, most popularly as the lead detective “Bobby Goren” in the long-running NBC drama “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” His notable film credits include Full Metal Jacket, Dying Young, Men in Black, Mystic Pizza, Jurassic World and The Break Up.

Tudyk gained fans’ attention when he starred as wise-cracking "Hoban 'Wash' Washburne" in "Firefly" and Serenity, and later grabbed the “Star Wars” fandom with his portrayal of “K-2SO” in Rogue One. He also appeared in Wreck it Ralph and 42 and has lent his voice to characters in hits like “American Dad,” “Harley Quinn,” “Transformers: Earthspeak” and “Star vs. the Forces of Evil.”

For 15 years (seven on TV and four feature films), “TNG” fans were treated to the talented Spiner in the role of "Lt. Commander Data," an android with superhuman abilities. Spiner may not have all of those same powers, but FAN EXPO attendees will have the opportunity to meet this personable, quick-witted star of stage and screen. In addition to his regular role in the current Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Picard,” some of his other popular credits include Independence Day (and, 20 years later, the sequel, Resurgence), "Warehouse 13," "Fresh Hell" and "Threshold."

Esfandi co-starred opposite Rosario Dawson, David Tennant and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in this year’s Disney+ miniseries “Ahsoka,” part of the Star Wars universe. He has also been seen in King Richard with Will Smith and The Inspection with Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union.

Inosanto appears alongside Esfandi as “Morgan Elsbeth” in “Ahsoka”. She originated that role in an episode of “Mandalorian” in 2020 after appearing in dozens of movies and shows as a stunt person and a variety of other entertainment jobs.

Suplee has had nearly 100 film and TV roles, from comedies like the Kevin Smith productions Mallrats, Dogma and Clerks III, “My Name is Earl,” and “Boy Meets World” to dramas such as Remember the Titans and The Butterfly Effect.

Ward played “Deke Shaw” as a regular on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” from 2017-2020, and most recently appeared in the first season of the Netflix adventure/comedy “One Piece.” Fans will also recognize him from his work in “Brand New Cherry Flavor” and the TV movie Manson’s Lost Girls, where he gave an appropriately creepy performance as the cult leader.

Hartman created some of the most memorable children’s series, including “Fairly Odd Parents,” “Danny Phantom,” “TUFF Puppy,” “Bunsen is a Beast” and “The Noog Network.” A public speaker, YouTuber motivator and teacher at Butch Hartman’s Art Academy, Hartman is passionate about inspiring young animators to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

NOTES: Two days before the show closed on Broadway. Good amount of closeups and good quality filmed from the mid-mezzanine; there is a railing issue for a while in Act 1 but the taper improves. 'Me', 'Gaston' and 'Be Our Guest' are all predominantly missing and recording stopped for some time after 'Gaston', which created a little jump in the timeline to where Maurice gets thrown out of the tavern. Still a nice video with great closeups of the last Broadway cast.

that reminds me, i have been meaning to do a bit of a scholarly genealogy of that nu nu political history book, and the ones that preceded it. keeping names redacted here for searchability due to connections to me lol, i will revisit this later more clearly. re: the post i posted, i am assuming that kfp was on tracy’s committee, but i can’t remember. i know tracy’s chair was t*m bender, and her husband came out of the same program under m*rilyn young--i think kim was at least a reader on his diss... but tracy is not in this new book. kfp got her phd at columbia in 2005, i’m not sure who her chair was but per the acknowledgements of her first book, foner (obviously), freeman and katznelson were all on her committee. the first two are an easy guess given the time and place but her work doesn’t especially look like theirs--though imo j*shua freeman is so broadly influential bc writes too many books!--but i really should have realized (immediately guessed) she was a student of the latter. one of the editors, mason williams, also came out of columbia, but his advisor was alan brinkley--kind of an interesting insight here into links to old guard political historians and state historians vs. ...well, whatever katznelson is, that’s another discussion. for example: one of the authors got her phd in 2001 at princeton under DANIEL RODGERS which is a whole thing! right when he was working on age of fracture. 

david freund got his phd at michigan--i always forget this, and also that colored property is about here! i can’t figure out who advised him, but that would help me understand how michigan became the main place to study american political urban history of the latter twentieth century--when they hired l*ssiter a few years later, it basically turned into a l*ssiter factory. freund thanks elsa barkley brown, robin kelley who i forgot was there, earl lewis and terrence mcdonald--thinking terrence mcdonald is the answer to my question. kathleen canning would be another figure to look at, and i am wondering if deborah dash moore was there yet...i don’t think so actually.

off the top of my head i know two contributors to this new anthology did their phd under m*tt l*ssiter (who contributed a conclusion, along with fein’s), lily g*ismer (a co-editor) and n*than connolly. only one of these contributors came out of kevin kruse’s princeton (sarah m*lov), which is fascinating because...that department owns political history. i don’t know why i haven’t read her book, she looks cool as hell. rachel moran came out of penn state when jennifer mittelstadt was still there, a fact that makes me actually very interested in her work--i’m heavily anticipating her chapter on “the nanny state” given my current phase!

julie w*ise got her phd in 2009 at yale with gilbert joseph (i think he is a latin americanist) and stephen pitti, who is in chicano history (i think out of “immigration history”). melissa b*rja came out of columbia with mai ngai! i have some thoughts on that, probably.. everyone loves ngai’s work and yet it is also positioned as so peripheral to nu political history in a way that is...i have some thoughts.

brent c*bul, another editor, did his diss at uva with brian balogh. that is the program that l*ssiter came out of, though (per, again, first book acknowledgements) his advisor was paul gaston. he does thank balogh though along with NELSON LICHTENSTEIN and JULIAN BOND who, it had totally escaped me, were teaching in the department at the same time. this is interesting to me because uva just isn’t a player at all in modern us political history anymore (balogh is still there but he must be approaching retirement?). given lichtenstein this is all making sense to me now. i haaad forgotten that andrew k*hrl (also in this book) is at uva now, though. karhl got his phd at indiana under a number of mostly black history scholars including kg muhammad and claude clegg, and some historians of the south otherwise.

suleiman osman is one of two amstu ppl in this book--definitely in many ways the Political Turn is a turn against american studies, I would say--and he came out of harvard american civ, but I don’t know who advised hi---oh it was liz cohen. LMAO! that’s as canon political-cultural urban history as you can get! love it. that makes so much sense. stuart schrader also came out of american studies (nyu), i don’t know who was on his committee but i am dying to know because i am huuugely anticipating his book! 

so that’s definitely not as concentrated as i thought! but i want to refer to this later, when i read the book i want to compare it to its predecessors and kind of...map this and sort of see if there is a change in concentration (esp re relations to amstu and ethnic studies departments and cultural historians, i think)

SleepWalker 2019 Freshman List

We are SleepWalker Radio, broadcasting on Tuesday nights at midnight on WOBC. In our show, we listen to a lot of rap and watch a lot of rap music videos. Right now XXL is the only relevant hip hop outlet that puts out a “Freshman List,” which is a list of the best artists relatively new to the rap game who have gained a lot of attention in the most recent year. Unfortunately, every list that XXL has put out seems to be more and more out of touch with what actual fans of rap in our age range actually listen to. They also only highlight rappers in their list, even though so much more goes into the overall content put out by these artists including the beats they rap over and the music videos they put out.

So we’re going to put out our own list of rappers, producers and videographers in the rap game that’s more in touch with what people are listening to and want to experience.  This post will cover rappers, but stay posted for more posts on the WOBC blog from SleepWalker Radio!

Splurge

Splurge, from Arlington, Texas, is quickly blowing up. One the youngest (he’s 17) and rawest people in the rap game,  Splurge gets his beats almost exclusively from Beat by Jeff and Beat by Six7. His songs normally consist of him just going bar after bar over some hard ass drums and 808 patterns. Splurge doesn’t do hooks or choruses. He gets in the booth and spits strictly trap and street s**t,  resulting in some of hardest content put out in 2k18. Listening to his music really just make you feel invincible. Like if you commit any crime while listening to Splurge you’re almost never gonna get caught because it just gives you the energy to get away with anything.

This past year, Splurge began to blow up in the underground and mainstream community, as evidenced by rappers like Lil Uzi Vert to Chance The Rapper doing the #woah dance to his songs. He only has one feature on his released projects -- from Q da Fool --  but Splurge’s intense flow can be heard on tracks with YungManny and S3nsi Molly. He’s like if Lud Foe was from Texas and started rapping with a Hoodrich flow over slower, but harder beats. Splurge is steadily getting more and more recognition in the rap community and is gonna be on some big moves this summer.

MIKE

MIKE, from Brooklyn, New York, is operating on a whole different wave than the vast majority of people in the rap game, and the world. Choosing from a extremely diverse array of production ranging from old soul samples, piano riffs, and strange samples in odd time signatures, MIKE can rap over anything and everything. All of his music just sounds so different, in the best way possible. When you listen to him, you can hear the feelings and passion he puts into every verse, and feel exactly how he's feeling when he’s in the booth.

MIKE’s been dropping music since 2015, and has a pretty extensive discography with each project having its own unique vibe, but still finding a way to fit perfectly within his overall body of work. Founder of the [sLUms] collective, MIKE has collaborated with a large group of artist in New York, and the general rap community with people on similar wavelengths as his, including acts like King Carter, Wiki, Mehdane, Pink Siifu, Sporting Life, Navy Blue and 6press. At the moment, MIKE is one of the most recognizable people in his scene, and has become, in a sense, the face of a movement in rap’s underground that is steering the community towards more soulful and experience driven music.

Bbymutha, from Chattanooga, Tennessee, is just raw as hell. She be saying the most wildest, realest and rawest s**t in a way that makes you be like damnnn whenever you hear one of her verses. She’s really one of the best in the game at talking her s**t. You can feel her confidence and knowledge in every word she says. Her ear for good music has lead to her rapping over any and every type of instrumental, but she's still got unlimited songs of her f*****g up some hi-hats and 808s.

She’s been putting out music from as far back as 2012, but started getting a lot of attention over the past year. BbyMutha has worked with artists like Rico Nasty, LSDXOXO and La Chat. She’s currently on tour with Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, and Black Noise, which hopefully means future collabs. BbyMutha has one of the rawest energies in the whole game, and it seems like the rap community is quickly realizing this, if they didn’t already.

YungManny from Hilmeade, Maryland, is another one of the rawest and youngest (he’s 15!) people in the game. He uses the rapid “Maryland flow” delivering a plethora of stand-alone bars over dark piano samples with hard ass drums behind it. YungManny honestly might have the best punchlines coming out of the “DMV flow” scene. The “DMV (D.C, Maryland, Virginia area) flow” is a style of rapping pioneered and popularized by rappers, almost all from Maryland, who design their verses to be filled with stand alone bars that follow one another rapidly, often cutting the tail end of each one off. When’s it's done right it can really get to crankin.

Anyways, YungManny makes references to all types of off the wall s**t ranging from Roots, viral memes, WWE, and like every Disney movie/show you can think of from the 2000s. It's hard to listen to any of his songs and not die laughing at something he says in it. It’s like every song is just him joanin on someone over a hard ass beat, and it just happens to rhyme. He can sing too.

Over the last year YungManny has released 6 tapes and a plethora of singles and features. Most of the projects Manny releases have very few features, but he is a frequent collaborator of Xanman (Free Xan) who has also become a punchline heavy weight in the DMV area. He’s also worked with upcoming rappers MoneyMarr and Splurge. It seems like the more music YungManny releases the more popular he becomes, so if you haven't heard of him already you probably will soon.

ANKHLEJOHN

ANKHLEJOHN, from Southeast, Washington D.C., has established his own very distinct sound. Normally talking his shit over production filled with dark samples that sounds like an evil Madlib produced them, ANKHLEJOHN has developed a grimey flow that sounds like he’s on the verge of slapping the s**t out of someone. When you listen to his music you feel like you’re with him on the block hitting a jack as he describes his surroundings to you and the wild ass adventures he casually goes on daily.

ANKH has released at least 11 projects in the last 2 years and most of them have one or no features, only really collaborating with other D.C. artists including Raheim Supreme and The Khan. He’s already garnered respect in the DMV area and it’s spread up the East Coast to New York too, so expect to start hearing about ANKHLEJOHN soon.

Lil Xelly, from Rockville, Maryland, has recently flooded the rap game with an avalanche of content. He’s like 2017 Chxpo from Maryland. This past year Xelly has put out over 30 projects and 260 songs, working with some of the hottest producers in the underground including Maaly Raw, DP Beats, Sparkheem, Noir Brent, Danny Wolf,  nedarb, Chinatown, StoopidXool, Grimm Doza and Levitatingman. He’s got that “Maryland flow” with quick deliveries of a bunch of stand alone bars that follow one another rapidly. He spits every verse like he’s the last fool in a cypher whose been eagerly waiting his turn. His intense delivery over his extremely wide and diverse selection of beats is just a great combination, like he really be spitting over literally anything and it cranks.

This last year, Xelly has worked with budding underground artists like Warhol.ss, Chxpo and The Khan, along with underground legends like P2TheGoldMask and Sickboyrari (Black Kray). Xelly’s got so much released content out there that people can't help but come across it. His following is steadily increasing and I can see him really blowing up soon.

Tisakorean, from Houston, Texas, is probably the weirdest and most interesting person in the rap game right now. He makes some of the most ignorant dumb s**t out here that just gets to crankin for no reason. Honestly, if you listen to his music and don't immediately love it then it's just not for you because it's really that dumb ignorant ass s**t that might just go too hard for you, and that's very understandable. His diverse, unconventional and unusual delivery is kinda weird, but goes for some reason. Also his use of layered ad lib tracks of him screaming “ayeee” and “workkkk” with his whole heart and soul accompanies his wild ass bars perfectly. He reminds me of like a toned down Dankgod.

This past year, Tisa has established a solid following, at first due to a dance he started called the “Dip” that was pretty big in Texas, and his weird but lit instagram. He took down most of his posts, but there was a period where Tisa’s instagram was full of videos of him dancing in a random area with no music and freestyling, while dressed in strictly Aeropostale. After a few of his videos went viral, Tisa started to get noticed for his musical style with Lil Uzi Vert remixing his “Dip” song. Since then, he’s dropped songs with 10.K Caash and Kenny Beats, and has previewed content he’s worked on with A$AP Ferg, A$AP Rocky and Chance The Rapper on his instagram. Tisa makes all his beats, not only showcasing his versatility, but also assuring that you really get his full vision when you hear his music. You definitely need to check this guy out because he’s got a good team behind him and he's probably gonna blow soon.

In WordPress 5.5, images wait to load until they’re just about to scroll into view. The technical term is ‘lazy loading.’

On mobile, lazy loading can also keep browsers from loading files meant for other devices. That can save your readers money on data — and help preserve battery life.

Say hello to your new sitemap.

WordPress sites work well with search engines.

Now, by default, WordPress 5.5 includes an XML sitemap that helps search engines discover your most important pages from the very minute you go live.

So more people will find your site sooner, giving you more time to engage, retain and convert them to subscribers, customers or whatever fits your definition of success.

Security

Now you can choose to update plugins and themes automatically–or pick just a few–from the screens you’ve always used.

Auto-updates for Plugins and Themes

Now you can set plugins and themes to update automatically — or not! — in the WordPress admin. So you always know your site is running the latest code available.

You can also turn auto-updates on or off for each plugin or theme you have installed — all on the same screens you’ve always used.

If updating plugins and themes manually is your thing, now that’s easier too — just upload a ZIP file.

Highlights from the block editor

Once again, the latest WordPress release packs a long list of exciting new features for the block editor. For example:

Block patterns

New block patterns make it simple and fun to create complex, beautiful layouts, using combinations of text and media that you can mix and match to fit your story.

You will also find block patterns in a wide variety of plugins and themes, with more added all the time. Pick any of them from a single place — just click and go!

The new block directory

Now it’s easier than ever to find the block you need. The new block directory is built right into the block editor, so you can install new block types to your site without ever leaving the editor.

Inline image editing

Crop, rotate, and zoom your photos right from the image block. If you spend a lot of time on images, this could save you hours!

Accessibility

Every release adds improvements to the accessible publishing experience, and that remains true for WordPress 5.5.

Now you can copy links in media screens and modal dialogs with a button, instead of trying to highlight a line of text.

You can also move meta boxes with the keyboard, and edit images in WordPress with your assistive device, as it can read you the instructions in the image editor.

For developers

5.5 also brings a big box of changes just for developers.

Server-side registered blocks in the REST API

The addition of block types endpoints means that JavaScript apps (like the block editor) can retrieve definitions for any blocks registered on the server.

Defining environments

WordPress now has a standardized way to define a site’s environment type (staging, production, etc). Retrieve that type with wp_get_environment_type() and execute only the appropriate code.

Dashicons

The Dashicons library has received its final update in 5.5. It adds 39 block editor icons along with 26 others.

Passing data to template files

The template loading functions (get_header(), get_template_part(), etc.) have a new $args argument. So now you can pass an entire array’s worth of data to those templates.

More changes for developers

The PHPMailer library just got a major update, going from version 5.2.27 to 6.1.6.

Now get more fine-grained control of redirect_guess_404_permalink().

Sites that use PHP’s OPcache will see more reliable cache invalidation, thanks to the new wp_opcache_invalidate() function during updates (including to plugins and themes).

Custom post types associated with the category taxonomy can now opt-in to supporting the default term.

Default terms can now be specified for custom taxonomies in register_taxonomy().

The REST API now officially supports specifying default metadata values through register_meta().

You will find updated versions of these bundled libraries: SimplePie, Twemoji, Masonry, imagesLoaded, getID3, Moment.js, and clipboard.js.

Multilingual Emergency Broadcasting: A Moral Imperative for the Radio Industry

According to a 2011 Census Bureau report, 21% of the U.S population speaks a language other than English at home. Yet, many of these individuals find themselves at a profound disadvantage when emergencies strike because very few of America’s radio stations routinely transmit emergency information in widely spoken languages other than English.

Notably and infamously, in August 2005, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, close to 100,000 Spanish-speaking individuals were left with no radio lifeline after the only Spanish-language station in New Orleans was knocked off the air.

To date, the FCC has no multilingual emergency broadcasting requirements. “It means that if you speak only Spanish, and a hurricane hits, you are on your own,” said Brent Wilkes, the former CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens. Although the Federal Emergency Management Agency supports extending alerting to the non-English speaking populations, stations have the choice to provide emergency information only in English.

America has no official national language, so it is imperative that the broadcast marketplace ensure that those who do not speak English still receive life-saving information during emergencies.

The idea of requiring EAS in languages other than English is not a new concept and can work if each local area has a “designated hitter” selected in advance to broadcast in languages other than English. The concept is based on the U.S. Army’s training of platoons: if a soldier goes down when the platoon is taking a hill, another soldier takes his or her place, and the job still gets done.

In 2018, this idea worked when three radio station groups voluntarily cooperated to provide vital information to Spanish-speaking residents to communities in threatened by Hurricane Florence. At the request of MMTC and LULAC, Miami-based Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) voiced and transmitted Spanish-language alerts for Cumulus Media and Dick Broadcasting, which serve Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head.

The execution of the process was quite simple. According to Dick Broadcasting’s Aaron Wilborn, “Broadcasters can pick up the phone and in two hours it can be broadcast, put on the air and done.”

These broadcasters made it possible for 22,000 Hispanic residents in Myrtle Beach and 21,000 Hispanic residents in Hilton Head to receive information about health care issues, avoiding injury, shelters, and where to find missing bodies after the hurricane hit. The initiative worked because “[W]e are accountable as broadcasters and license holders,” said Jesus Salas of Spanish Broadcasting System, the largest Hispanic-owned media company in the United States.

“These companies are an example to other broadcasters of the essential services that they should provide to the public they serve in times of disaster,” said MMTC President Maurita Coley. “America’s broadcasters should engage now, in this hurricane season, to save the lives of everyone, no matter what languages they speak.”

Robert Reed, 93

Mr. Robert "Bob" John Reed, age 93 of Moravian Falls passed away Saturday, September 15, 2018 at his home.

               Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Scenic Memorial Gardens in the Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Dave Walker and Rev. Fred Wells Brason II officiating. Entombment will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

               Mr. Reed was born April 13, 1925 in Buffalo, NY to Robert A. and Edna K. Reed. He was a World War II Veteran having served in the United States Army. Retired from Ashland Oil Company, Bob was the co-owner of D&B Estates of Western, New York, Courtyard and Antique Center of Clarence, New York. He was a loving husband and father.

               He was preceded in death by his parents.

               He is survived by his wife; Dorothea L. Price Reed, three daughters; Christine L. Reed of Taylorsville, Judith R. Walker and husband Dave of Louisville, KY, Karen R. Brason and husband Fred of Moravian Falls, eleven grandchildren; Matthew Willert, Andrew Willert, Bart Barcelou, Ian Barcelou, Bobbi Bro Walker, Ted Brason, Andrea Pankau, Lindsey Gough, Robert Brason, Barry Walker and Brent Walker, fifteen great grandchildren; Adalynn and Madison Willert, Larkin and Tristan Barcelou, Emma, Andrew, Alex and Hudson Willert, Brayson and Harper Gough, Giovanni, Ja'Lisa and Nyla Pankau and Grace and Griffin Walker.

               In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 688 North Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621.

 Earl Eller, 72

Mr. Earl Thomas Eller, age 72 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2018 at his home.

               A Celebration of Life service was held September 18,   in the old gym of North Wilkes High School. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

               Mr.. Eller was born March 28, 1946 in Wilkes County to Ernest A. and Geneva Faw Eller, who preceded him in death. He and two brothers, Larry and David, grew up on a farm in Millers Creek, N.C. Earl attended Millers Creek Elementary and graduated from West Wilkes High  School in 1964. While at West Wilkes, he was co-captain of the football team his senior year and selected all conference for three years. After graduation, he attended Mars Hill College and played football for two years until an injury sidelined him. He graduated in 1968 and during his junior and senior years, he was the first student director of Mars Hill's intramural programs.

               In 1968, Eller began teaching Biology, Health, and Physical Education at North Wilkes High School where he also started his coaching career, becoming the first head football coach. Earl inherited a tradition of winning because the Vikings were widely known for their basketball success, having won a state title. In his first two years, the football team played a junior varsity schedule with afternoon games on the baseball field. The Vikings played their first varsity home game in their new football stadium in 1970. In 1972, their third year of varsity competition, North Wilkes won its first conference championship. Coach Eller coached the football program for 13 years, participated in state playoffs for four years, and served as athletic director for 32 years.

               Coach Eller worked tirelessly to upgrade facilities and establish programs for young men and women, and because of his dedication, the field house at North Wilkes High School is named in his honor. During Eller's tenure, North Wilkes athletics grew from two sports to 32 teams when he retired. Coach Eller started the weight program for all athletes and helped coordinate Athletic Booster Club projects that included: adding bleachers in the gym, baseball field, and football field; press boxes at both fields; handicap viewing area; and a concession building for football. During Eller's career, a football facility was constructed along with a running track, tennis courts, and women's softball field. Coach Eller's vision along with county and community support made this possible.

               Eller was active in the North Wilkes community, Wilkes County, and across the state. He is a charter member of the Mountain View Ruritan Club, served on the Wilkes Community College Board of Trustees, and volunteers as a lunch buddy for Communities In Schools. Eller's entire life has been one in constant motion of helping, encouraging, teaching, and sacrificing time and resources to better the lives of others. Earl loved traveling and spending time with his daughter, Kristy and her husband Mitch, and three grandchildren, Gavin, and twin granddaughters Piper and Ellery.

               Mr. Eller is survived by a daughter; Kristy Jane Eller Tyndall and husband Mitch of Clayton, a grandson; Gavin Tyndall and two granddaughters; Piper and Ellery all of Clayton, two brothers; Larry Eller and wife Helen of Millers Creek and David Eller of Millers Creek.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to North Wilkes High School Athletics, 2986 Traphill Road, Hays, NC 28635.

Grace Williams, 93

Mrs. Grace Jaunita Williams, 93 of Glade Valley, passed away on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at her residence.

 Grace was born on October 23, 1924 in Beckley, West Virginia to Robert Alexander Pierce and Stella Elizabeth Crouse Pierce.

               Grace is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert McKinley Williams; son, Robert Harrold Williams; brothers, Jack Pierce, Bobby Dean Pierce; sisters, Lucy Sheets and Susie Woodel.

               Grace is survived by her sons, Roger Williams (Pauline), Richard" Bud" Williams (Linda) all of Glade Valley; brothers, John Robert Pierce of Traphill, Curley James Pierce (Sara) of Wilkesboro, Dale Pierce (Brenda) of Roaring River; sister in law, Margie Pierce; 8 grandchildren, 16 great grand children, and 12 great great grand children.  

               The funeral service will be held at 1p.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Woodruff Primitive Baptist Church.

Elder Eddie Lyles and Elder Shultz Pratt will be officiating.

               Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

               The Family will receive both friends and food at Grace's residence.

Wade Bumgarner, 73

 Mr. Wade Bumgarner, age 73, husband of Diane Church Bumgarner of Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

               Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Pilgrim Baptist Church with Pastor Derek Kilby, Rev. Dennis Love and Rev. Rex Eldreth officiating.  Burial will be in Pilgrim Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 PM prior to the service at the church.

               Wade graduated from West Wilkes High School in 1963 where he played basketball, baseball and football and later attended Wilkes Community  College. He worked as a serviceman at Holly Farms, was self-employed with Supreme Guttering and Siding, and then became an agent with NC Farm Bureau where he retired from in 2009.  He also made several mission trips to New York. He worked with Pilgrim Outreach in the food pantry, delivering food and counseling people spiritually. Wade was an avid outdoorsman.  He loved hunting and fishing, especially with his grandchildren. Wade was a devoted man of God, and a loving husband, dad, papa, brother and friend. He never met a stranger and he wouldn't let anything stand in the way of being there for anyone in need.  Doing the Lord's work and being there for his family were his priorities in his life.

               We turn to God's Word to sum up the life of this wonderful man, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" - Matthew 25:21  

               Mr. Bumgarner was born December 1, 1944 in Wilkes County to Paul M. and Ruby Dancy Bumgarner.  He was a deacon and a choir member of Pilgrim Baptist Church.

               He was preceded in death by his parents.

               He is survived by his wife; Diane Church Bumgarner of the home, one daughter; Kimberly Bumgarner Church of Wilkesboro, one son; Jeff Bumgarner and wife; Laura of Millers Creek, three grandchildren; Christopher Glenn Church, McKayla Bumgarner Faw and husband Jordan, Grayson Walker Bumgarner, two brothers; Charles Bumgarner and wife Toni Jo and Fred Bumgarner and wife Peggy all of Wilkesboro.

 Dorothy Moore, 80

Dorothy Geraldine Moore, age 80, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at her home. She was born December 23, 1937 in Wilkes County to Roy M. and Laura Johnson Moore. Dorothy enjoyed quilting, gardening and loved her dog Spike. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Randly William "Box" Moore; brother, Harless Moore; and son-in-law, Walter Shephard.

Surviving are her children, Debbie Shephard, Bebbie Barr and husband Jack, Tabbie Curry, Libbie McNeil and husband Charlie; grandchildren, Bradley Curry, Matt Curry, Jenny Barr, Amy Church, Christy Johnson; and great grandchildren, Lakyn Curry, Lanie Curry, Trenton Church, Courtney Church, Charlie Johnson, Chance Johnson, Jordon Huffman and James Jones; sisters, Margie Weber, Gladys Call; and special friends, Clyde Watt, Cleo Rakes and Vea Brown.

               Funeral service were held   September 15,  at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Wellborn officiating. Burial followed in Scenic Memorial Gardens.

 Daniel Ledford, 22

Mr. Daniel Ray Ledford, age 44 husband of Connie Broyhill Ledford of Boomer passed away Sunday, September 9, 2018 at his home.          

               Memorial services was held   September 12,   at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Pastor Joey Moore and Rev. Michael Church officiating.

               Mr. Ledford was born on June 30, 1974 in Mitchell County to Patsy Reavis.  He was self-employed as in computer repair and website management and attended  Pleasant Home Baptist Church in Millers Creek and Crossfire United Methodist Church.  He was a loving son, husband and father. He was a reborn Christian, a strong believer in his salvation from his Heavenly Father.

               He is survived by his wife; Connie Broyhill Ledford of the home, one daughter; Sierra Danielle Black of Iron Station, step-son; Jesse Lee Blevins of the home and his mother; Patsy Reavis of Wilkesboro.  He was preceded in death by his stepfather and mentor; Danny Reavis.

  Sue  Miller, 81

Sue Hall Miller, age 81, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Watauga Medical Center. Mrs. Miller was born June 20, 1937 in Wilkes County to Clarence Edward and Gypsy Verna Shumate Hall. She was a member of Baptist Home Baptist Church and was secretary and co-owner of ABC Radio and Television Service. Her hobbies and interest included family, baking, photography, flower gardening, fashion and travel. Sue was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Marie Hall Karriker, Catherine Hall Lovette and Wanda Hall Adams.

               Surviving are her husband, Richard Warren Miller; daughter, Sandy Hayes and husband Tony of Boone; sisters, Lucille Hall Johnson of McGrady, Hazel Hall Brown and husband Alvin of Moravian Falls, Vecie Hall Shoemaker and husband Bob of North Wilkesboro; brother, Ronnie Stone and wife Bonnie of McGrady; grandchildren, Josh Hayes of Boone, Casey Hayes Vincent and husband Matt of Boone; great grandchildren, Adeline Sue Hayes of Maryville, Tennessee, Dean Jackson Vincent of Boone.

               Funeral service was held September 13,  at Baptist Home Baptist Church with Pastor David Jones and George Wells officiating. Burial   followed in the Church Cemetery.
