#dungeon meshi #shuro #toshiro nakamoto #look you can hate him for other things but this is very clearly a case of cultures (& personalities influenced by these cultures) clashing #shuro is japanese/east asian-coded and laios is european white boy #i am not japanese but i also come from a collectivistic society #pakikisama is a filipino value both prized and abhorred #it relies heavily on being able to read social cues and prior knowledge of societal norms #shuro being from a different country/culture is important to his character #his repressed nature is meant to contrast with laios' open one like that's the point #they both had similar upbringings but different coping mechanisms #shuro explicitly admits that he's jealous of laios being able to live life sincerely #anyway the point is they were operating on different expectations entirely and neither had healthy enough communication skills #to hash things out before they got too bad #re his attraction to falin i personally believe he unfortunately mpdg-ed her #she represented something new & different. a fresh drink of water for his parched repressed self #alas not meant to be #i'll be honest the way ryoko kui handles both fantasy & regular racism in dm is more miss than hit for me #i don't doubt that a lot of the shuro hate is based off of marcille's pov of him #marcille famously racist 😭#characters' racist views don't often get (too) challenged #practically everyone is casually racist at some point #anyway. again if you're gonna hate shuro at least hate him for being complicit in human trafficking & slavery #he couldn't help falling for the wrong woman goddamn 😭#calemonsito notes #edit: upon further reflection i take back what i said about toshiro mpdg-ing falin!#i'm sorry toshiro 😭

'samba music intensifies'

I've been going to a lot of ballroom dance comps lately and I cannot stop imagining my favs dancing along as well. Samba has to be one of my favorite dances and I am dying to learn it. It's just so high energy and most of all it looks so damn fun. I couldn't resist drawing Ed and Winry dancing as well :D

Some more headcanons about the fma crew:

Al likes the contact involved so he likes the standard and nightclub styles best

Ed usually leads but if Winry wants to lead well he's not going to say no, but he is more experienced in leading. The two usually dance Smooth or Latin and they are terrifying in quickstep

Roy only knows nightclub dances until Riza forced him to learn other styles for military events, but he absolutely kills it in West Coast Swing

Riza knows Standard best, though she has less experience in most of the other styles, she's a really good follow and can follow just about anything. She's also a really good lead for Standard and by some extension Smooth

Ling, Lan Fan, and Mei are newer to ballroom dance (sorry guys i may be chinese but idk any chinese dances) but once introduced, well Ling is a diehard for the dramatics and LanFan is usually willing to comply. They start off learning Smooth, while Mei jumps straight into nightclub with Al

I love period works based on relatively recent decades that are built entirely out of the childhood nostalgia of the people making them, and as such end up being just as much time capsules of the time they were made as the time they're set.

Like. I don't know if I'm wording this right. But "show or film based on a particular decade but entirely from the real memories yet flawed nostalgia glasses of a writer who was a kid at the time" is always going to be very much a product of its time. Like. Grease and Happy Days, both set in the 50s, could only ever have been made in the 70s and early 80s. Hairspray (the original film) and Heartbeat, both set in the 60s, could only ever have been made in the late 80s and the 90s. Ashes to Ashes, set in the early 80s, could only ever have been made in the late 00s. And Turning Red, set in the early 00s, could only ever have been made in the 2020s.

Because none of those works are true accurate depictions of what those years were objectively actually like. They're true accurate depictions of what those years felt like, if you were twelve at the time.

And that's something future generations of writers are never going to be able to quite emulate in quite the same way.

#it's like #when I was 12 it was 2008 #the market crashed #there was war in the middle east #obama became president #and there was a real sense of paranoia and fear about terrorism in London only three years on from the 7/7 bombings #I remember all of that #but if someone asked me to write something about 2008 as I remember it all of that stuff is just gonna be tucked away in the background #I'm gonna be waxing lyrical about Ed and Oucho on TV and Scouting For Girls on the radio #and the way cool boys refused to be seen in public with their hair un-spiked when they ran out of hair gel #and playing with your mate's new blackberry in the school loos and hiding your headphone wires up the sleeve of your jumper #that's what 2008 was like. that's the way I remember it

Nora, I've just found your blog and I'm loving it!!!

I'm a bit of a Royai crackhead but I love FMA universe in general, so considering East and North do joint training exercises, how do you think it'd go with your OCs in it?

Thank you so much!!! Royai is top tier, i love them sm (Casther and Val actually have quite some similarities). Had a lot of fun doing this and originally I wanted to draw some interactions between Mustgang and my ocs. But I ended up fixating on Royai and Casther and Val. Oops.

Overall I think these joint exercises have a history of East and North competing for who has the better soldiers (which is exactly where the rivalry between Olivier and Roy comes from). So at the same time we have the Mustgang/east group that are just as much dumbasses as those at Briggs, so it would be a big mess.
