ISLAM 101: ETHICS: Part 3

How should the ethics of a Muslim man/woman be?

According to the information obtained from the Quran, every Muslim woman/man has the following characteristics – in summary:

- He believes in Allah and the Day of Judgment. He is careful about the seditions of the world and the tricks of Satan. He worships his Lord, fulfills His order and avoids His prohibitions. He surrenders to Allah fully. He repents a lot and asks his Lord for forgiveness due to his mistakes, negligence, and sins.

- He is aware of his responsibility toward his family members. He seeks Allah’s consent in everything that he does. He orders what is good as much as he can and forbids what is evil.

- He is aware of his duties toward himself. He is aware that man consists of mind, spirit, and body and that each has a structure and needs peculiar to them. He is careful about the balance among them; he does not give one too much importance by ignoring the others. He regards the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of the Prophet and the lives of great personalities as a guide regarding the issue.

- He gives importance to his clothes without waste, extremism, and conceit. He shows the care that fits man, whom Allah made honorable, ordered His angels to prostrate and put what is in the skies and earth under his service, in his inner world.

- He treats his parents well and does them favors. He appreciates them. He tries not to be a disobedient child.

- He becomes mature, loving and friendly toward his spouse; he tries to attain her consent; he tries to show respect to her, do her favors, keeps her secrets, helps her do favors act piously and do righteous deeds; he fills her with happiness and peace.

- She is a very compassionate mother toward her children. She is aware of her responsibility for their education. She makes her children feel her love, compassion, and mercy toward them. When it is necessary, she warns her children and corrects their mistakes. Thus, she makes high ethics settle in their hearts; she tries to give them a good education by directing them to good and honorable works.

- He continues the bond of love between him and his relatives. He does his neighbor's favors and helps them. He takes care of them. He knows the rights of neighbors and observes them.

His relationship with his brothers and friends are based on “loving for Allah”. It is the loftiest and cleanest love in human life. For, it is a love that is free from all kinds of material interests and doubts. A relationship based on this principle takes its cleanliness and purity from the light of the Quran and the Sunnah.

Therefore, a Muslim is honest, sincere and tolerant in his relationships with his brothers. He does not break off his relationship with them; he does not hurt their feelings by arguing and quarreling with them. He does them favors whenever he can. He always welcomes them by smiling. His social relationships are at a very high level. He takes his socialness from the principles of his religion and the decrees about high ethics of the fiqh of mutual relationships.

In addition, every Muslim, man-woman, has the following characteristics:

- He has high ethics. He tells the truth to everybody and is honest.

- He does not trick, deceive or betray people. He does not perjure.

- He gives advice. He leads people to good deeds. He keep his promise. He is modest and chaste.

- He does not interfere in the things that do not interest him. He does not search for people’s private issues.

- He keeps away from showing off. He acts justly in all cases. He does not oppress. He acts justly toward the people that he does not like. He does not become happy for the bad things that happen to anybody.

- He does not have negative thoughts about others. He does not backbite or commit talebearing. He does not swear and utter bad words. He does not mock anybody.

- He is lenient and merciful toward people. He helps those who are in need. He is generous. He does not run anybody’s nose in it. He makes things easy, not difficult.

- He does not act jealously. He avoids fictitious words and deeds. He is good-humored. He does not act arrogantly; he is humble. He is not engaged in useless things.

- He visits ill people. He cares about the problems of others. He prefers others to himself. He appreciates the favors done to him and thanks people.

- She adapts her customs and traditions to Islamic criteria. She shows respect to the elderly and virtuous people. She does not try to resemble men.

- She calls to Allah. She calls people kindly and wisely. She stays together with righteous women.

- She is chaste and modest; she protects her awrah places. She protects not only her body, eyes, and ears but also her mind, heart, and intention from all kinds of haram deeds.

- She is patient and hopeful. She never abandons hope of Allah’s mercy.

- She is knowledgeable about religion and ilm. She learns what is useful and harmful for her and acts accordingly.

- She is solemn and respectful.

- She is natural; she appears as she is and she is as she appears.

He never falters and acts lazily in important and dangerous duties. He relies on Allah.

- He gives importance to bodily and spiritual cleanliness and acts accordingly.

- He is not a gambler, drunkard, trickster, fraud, cheater, sycophant and twister.

- He does not judge about something that he does not know.

- He never leaves the truth and justice anywhere even if it is against him.

- He never leaves justice related to his enemies; he does not obstruct justice due to his enmity toward them.

- He avoids extravagance and stinginess.

- He does not harm anybody with his hand or tongue.

- He helps others at times of both welfare and hardship.

- If he wants to commit a bad deed or wrong somebody, he remembers Allah at once, asks forgiveness from Him and repents.

- He accepts the truth no matter who tells it; he accepts and takes knowledge, skill, wisdom, and truth wherever he finds them; he does not act bigotedly about them.

- He is not lazy. He works for the world as if he will never die and gets ready for the hereafter as if he will die tomorrow; he fulfills his duties about both of them fully.

- He regards the love of Allah and the Prophet superior to everything. Love and fear of Allah cover all of his body.

- He avoids doubtful things by all means.

- His biggest aim is to try to be a real Muslim, to practice and make others practice the virtues that Islam determines and suggests, and to serve as a model to everybody.

Those are some examples from the personality of a Muslim, whom Islam forms with guidance, whose heart Islam forms with wisdom and whose prudence Islam enlightens.

independent . call it the result of having to become the man of the house at a young age due to having an abusive father who became divorced from his mother, but jonathan learned how to advocate for himself and the people he loves at a very young age. a peacemaker at heart, he tends to try to deal with things privately, spending so much time in his head that it unfortunately can morph into a force that can weigh down on him and reinforce his depression.

sensitive . if there's one person in st who i think absorbs the energy around them like a sponge, it'd be jonathan. he is hyper-cognizant of the emotions of the people around him, and if they're someone someone he cares about he goes the extra mile, checking on them & asking if they're okay. something else jonathan does is reassure others even when they just appear to be distressed/anxious/etc, even if they aren't talking. he just assumes that they need reassurance - 99% of the time they do - without verbal prompting. he reads people like they're goddamn novels and really learns to understand them and what they need from him.

neutral .

private . call it a result of him being both aloof and independent, but jonathan is incredibly hesitant when it comes to actually sharing things with others. he regards his inner world and the workings of his mind something to be protected with every fiber of his being, and will only let that cage door open during moments of extreme emotional distress or where it's absolutely warranted to protect someone he cares about. it takes a lot of time, patience, and showing jonathan you're someone he can trust before he lets you into that inner world of his. he only has so much time to internally protect the people he already cares about, but if he's willing to put that energy in for you, you've found yourself a very close, very loyal friend with a bond that cannot be easily broken.

skeptical . it's pretty safe to say that jonathan is not an easy believer in things that can't be proven. he didn't believe his mom when she said that will was in the lights, and wasn't willing to extend the benefit of the doubt to nancy when she became curious about the potential connection to the upside down that billy and mrs. driscoll had. if you want to convince jonathan of something, you need to prove it to him, ideally with sensory information that he can directly and objectively experience and measure. in this sense, jonathan is extremely practical, grounded in real-world affairs and how things actually operate around him, instead of engaging in the comfortable imagination of theoretical matters. his skepticism is also very likely the byproduct of his fears of letting new people and new information into what often feels like an incredibly fragile existence, especially given everything he and his family had been through. as we've established, jonathan is extremely protective of his inner world, and he is not very kind to new information that can be a threat to that inner world, especially if that information hasn't directly been proven to him yet.

negative .

aloof . it's no secret that jonathan is incredibly introverted and somewhat awkward when it comes to social interactions, particularly (sudden & unplanned) one-to-one interactions with strangers. he tends to be moody with a lot of newcomers, especially if they've shown they may somehow be a threat to him or the people he cares about, and isn't particularly skilled when it comes to navigating social interactions. he tries to keep a cool head, only resorting to aggression and/or violence when it comes to self-defense and defending the honor of people he cares about or when he's faced with a difficult decision. but overall he's a huge introvert who prefers to indulge in his hobbies rather than become involved with social matters, moving along grumpily and with haste whenever he's forced to.

suspicious . this trait of jonathan's is very much connected to his skepticism; if something can't be empirically proven or demonstrated to him, he immediately regards that something as something to be suspected, never something to be trusted. his lack of trust in others also often manifests as him being suspicious of them and of their motives; he's so used to being seen as a social outcast, withdrawn from the rest of the world, that someone else couldn't possibly want anything to do with him unless if it means getting something out of him. it all stems from his desire to keep himself safe, not wanting to involve himself with something if it can easily turn the hurt around on him. it can take a while to prove to jonathan that you can be trusted with your motives, and that trusting relationship can be sparked if the process works the other way around - specifically, if jonathan finds something in you that he can use to benefit both of you and your relationship. in a sense, he strongly prefers symbiotic relationships than parasitic, or even commensalistic, ones.

*In general Senritsu has to be independent, fair and hardworking as a Hunter. She is kind and friendly and supportive. However, as much as she likes to be with people, fiercly independent as she is she really prefers to work alone or with someone on her eyelevel to share the expertise with. Accordingly she is not working well in hierarchys,especially not if she is suppose to be the boss of people she would prefer as her equals. Which makes her not especially great of an leader.

**Senritsu has an iron grip on her belongings, because she knows that she is not a tidy person and had tendencys to get very untidy and unorganized if she has too many belongings. That is one of the reasons why she has no actual Home to live in, because she knows that this place would end up in chaos. Not dirty, but very unorganized and messy as it would show how her creative mind focuses on one thing to obsess over while the rest would become for the moment of obsession unimportant. The true genius controls the chaos, thats true, but if people walk into her chaos of which she swears she has control over and which is definitive organized with her own system, they might have a heartattack.

You can’t go to heaven hating somebody. Forgive now. Be compassionate now. Be patient now. Be grateful now.

Mother Angelica

Election season rolls around in the United States with a cruel disposition. Autumn is in full swing, all the major sports are on the air, and plans for the holidays are beginning to firm up. Into this exciting setting comes our democratic duty, our civic sacrament, our baptism in hate. I am told that there was a time when politics did not rely so heavily on animus for out-groups the candidate means to protect you from but surely that era predates my existence. Voting is indeed a civic sacrament, a wonderful gift of free peoples to consent to their governance to some degree. But when hate becomes the gravity of political space there is something lost in the process. I say lost in the process because of course the destination every politician is taking you is some version of paradise. When hate becomes an important component in political efforts we become less humane for the whole affair.

Hate is not the opposite of love. The opposite of love is indifference. Hate is the opposite of idolatry. When we hate someone or something we are generally doing so because that person or thing stands for the opposite, or at least in opposition, to something we value dearly. But hate is a powerful emotion and an even more powerful force of human psychology. One needs to reflect some zeal off the idolized thing to really refract a focused beam of heat on the hated. Hate is a physical and emotional effort that simply drains our energies for the more important work of love. Lasting peace is built by forgiveness, compassion, and patience: only once we’re grateful for something we think we can share do we see the road to compacts, compromises, and treaties of understanding that don’t demand tribalism and hatred.

Naïve is often ascribed to those who lead by compassion. It is fashionable now in this country to see such people as pawns for a growing evil from some vilified out-group. Having pursued an education in these things and worked on a political campaign myself I can tell you the naïve angle is another hate tactic. The candidates who start fires of political strife hoping to hate their way into office are normally the ones we survive to regret. In the grand scheme of life we all hope to emerge more just, virtuous people by the end no matter what we believe comes afterwards. Where hate is allowed to define us we lose something of this fundamental, universal quest of the human heart. Certainly looking for outgroups to vilify is the gateway to so many greater evils that hate is a mere foretaste. Politics composed of hate are not worth the damage they inflict on our souls. Our time is too short to define it by hate.

VICES

Vampire Weaknesses - While the sunlight does not turn him to dust, it does burn him up very badly. He covers his skin in the daytime, and wears extra sunblock on his face/ears/neck. Garlic doesn’t bother him unless he ingests a lot of it. Dead blood can poison and potentially kill him. He can drink things that humans drink but he cannot eat very much, it makes him sick. When he waits too long to feed (to keep the death count low), he will not be able to control his fangs and will frenzy if he is presented with a meal. Pure silver crosses and Holy Water also work on him. If his head is severed from his body, he will not die immediately, but he will starve to death if he cannot reattach to his body.

Vampire Strengths - One of the things he can do is take a full vampiric form much like this. He can fly, has superhuman strength, and strong nails for scratching. His teeth can retract like a snake’s, and have a kind of venom that can leave his victims relaxed and high. Occasionally it can cause arousal.

South Park Vampire Society - He handles planning every meeting, every outing, every movie night, everything that the Society needs. While it’s tiring, he does everything that he can for all of them, even if there are over 300 members. He has even let kids come over to cuddle when they had nightmares. As much as he loves them and cares for them, he becomes complaintive to Mike and Bloodrayne when he wants to just have five minutes to himself.

Mike - Larry would do literally anything for Mike, and pines for his best friend like nothing else. He does everything possible for him, including dealing with things he doesn’t want to.

Witchcraft - Larry specializes in water magic, binding, and seances. Nobody expects him to do some of the things that he has done, but he has used his own blood and the blood of others in some of his rituals. He prefers human to animal sacrifices.

BIOGRAPHY

To the town, Larry is sweet, polite, giving and the most parental figure in all of South Park. He will kiss boo-boos, sets up every single Vampire Society event, and has from the get-go. Always willing to help, he rarely has any time to himself, and when he does get it, he tends to spend it with Mike and Bloodrayne. It is rare for him to get much sleep.

Behind the scenes, something only Bloodrayne and Mike know, he is cold, cruel, loud, and hateful. He will talk shit about people, and can be very violent. A lot of his own killings, when and if he does them, end up being blamed on the goth kids, mostly Firkle. Sometimes he helps Bloodrayne with her fight club stuff, and joins in, even.

One night, Larry and Katie were walking around town together. Larry had asked her to join him, because he felt safer that way. Regardless of this, as they walked around and talked, kicking rocks ahead of them, they were approached by two people they had never seen before. After that, the rest of the night is a blur for both of them, but when they finally came to, they were both actual vampires.

Often-times he pushes his hunger away for weeks at a time until he and Bloodrayne decide to go out to Denver to feed. The two of them feast before heading back home, and don’t talk about it all that much.

LESTAT

Larry’s loyal companion, Lestat, is always with him whether he’s home or out and about. As much as he seems like a normal white German Shepherd, he is a Hellhound, as well as Larry’s familiar. Lestat keeps watch when Larry sleeps during the early morning hours, and protects him at all other times. He is very friendly with Larry’s friends and most people, but greatly dislikes the goth kids. Karen is the only exception. To allow him to go with Larry everywhere, he has been trained and vetted as a Service Dog.

QUICK FACTS

Exercising his self-control, Larry spends so much of his time around other people that he doesn’t have the luxury of vamping out around them. He has no choice but to keep up appearances so he will not be caught being what he is.

Larry has a deep love for all of their vampire fandoms, though he knows none of them are totally true. He still wishes he had been able to see Corey Haim at Mike’s birthday party. Mike maintains that it wasn’t Corey Haim, but Larry suspects that it’s because he doesn’t want him to feel bad.

It’s funny to him that nobody thought his Vampire Name was fitting. Darkheart sounds very edgy and silly to the elder Vamp Kids, but it’s secretly something that is true. He isn’t as good as people thing that he is.

Hiding his true self is something he is so used to that his façade only drops when in private, or with Mike and/or Bloodrayne. Even when he isn’t near South Park, he has a tendency to play his usual role.

Lestat does not accompany him when he and Bloodrayne go to feed in Denver.

Larry's daily duties typically include: Managing a communal bank account, making calls/setting up meetings/trips/events, keeping track of who is turned/when they last fed/when they are next due to feed/any allergies, making sure everyone is safe/wearing appropriate clothes to go out in/keeping tabs on where they all are, organizing and preparing meetings/itineraries, managing Mike and his schedule, caring for the younger members like their mother.

Pete and Larry dated for a scant few months in the background, but due to Larry always being busy, Pete never fully trusted him. The accusations of cheating grew to be too much and eventually Larry’s patience ran thin. He partially believes that them never having sex was part of the problem, but when they dated he hardly had a moment to himself due to doing so much for the Society.

Full name: Ximena María Magdalena de Rubalcaba y Saavedra

Meaning of name:

Ximena: Basque variant of Simone, meaning “one who has heard”

María Magdalena: Spanish variant of Mary Magdalene, derived of “of Magdala”, a village whose name means “tower” in Old Hebrew

Family:

Heloisa and Cibela de Rubalcaba: Ximena’s elder sisters, Heloisa by 6 and Cibela by 12 years. In her youth and early adulthood, due to being closer in age she spent more time with Heloisa than with Cibela, to whom she did look up though as a role model as well as Cibela being more introverted like her in contrast to the very extroverted Heloisa. Cibela was mostly absent during her childhood, whereas she and Heloisa spent most of their free time, and tutor-free time together.

Marisol de Rubalcaba (deceased): Her mother and the former Marquesa de Rubalcaba. Having immense favouritism for her firstborn, Marisol was rather distant towards her younger daughters but would try to be an affectionate mother towards them.

Valentín Saavedra (deceased): Ximena’s late father and a sea-faring merchant prince from the higher Cartagense bourgeoisie. Like his wife, Valentín favored his eldest daughter yet tried to encourage all of his daughters’ ambitions and work. Ximena is said to be similar to him in terms of personality.

Esmerelda de Rubalcaba: The matriarch in-all-but-name of the Rubalcaba family, Marisol’s older sister and Ximena’s aunt. Esmerelda is arguably the most central maternal figure in her life, even more than her own mother, and her primary tutor. She was the one who recognized Ximena’s affinity for magic and gave her vital support when she entered the Magician’s Guild.

Agustín de Rubalcaba: Esmerelda’s only son and Ximena’s cousin. A diplomat that wasn’t under his mother’s wing unlike his cousins, he is very affectionate towards Ximena and fulfills the role of an older brother for her as well as being her only connection to her family after her exile.

Segismundo: Ximena’s familiar whom she found in the rainforests of Northern Calpacia sometime after her exile as a hatchling and nursed him back to health. Their connection is deep and he is both trusting and protective of her.

Ximena is of rather slender build. Her skin is medium brown with a warm undertone and she has a round face with a rounded chin. She has a beauty mark underneath the outer corner of her left eye and an upturned nose with a low bridge. Her eyes are a color similar to dark honey and she has full lips. Her eyebrows are thick and dark, groomed but not thinned, and she has bags underneath her eyes. Her black hair is long and curly with the occasional grey hair, especially near her temples.

She usually wears golden hoop earrings and several golden rings on her fingers. She wears a bit of eyeliner and darkened lipstick.

She gives off the impression of being rather serene and after her exile purposely tries to change the way she spoke and held herself in order to appear less like an aristocrat and more like a commoner.

Backstory:

Born into the influential aristocratic Rubalcaba family based in Cartagenth, the capital of the Calpacian Empire in the West, Ximena received an extensive education and since she had the most affinity to magic within her family, a vast tutoring in magic while her sisters were put on other carreer tracks. The Rubalcabas have had a presence ever since the founding of Cartagenth thanks to Fairuza, one of the city’s original founders, and then with Xochitl I., who was rumored to be the primary force behind the union of various kingdoms into what became Calpacia. They have centuries long history of being close to Calpacia’s sovereign, the Zaan, and involvement in politics, the military and on very rare occasions the Magician’s Guild of Cartagenth, where Ximena was meant to eventually become Head of the Guild and a vital instrument in the plans her aunt Esmerelda had for her, her sisters and the fate of all of Calpacia.

Mostly due to their riches, privilege and upbringing, the climate in Ximena’s family was a rather toxic one, with a centuries-old legacy hanging over them like a Damocles sword and envy, entitlement, jealously, sabotage and power struggles running rampant among them. Esmerelda’s desire to cement her family’s position and ensure their survival in the cut-throat environment in the Cartagense court as well as wanting to function as the driving force behind the pillars of powers saw her mercilessly using her family and to see them as little more than pawns to be utilized to achieve the desired goal.

Being maneuvered like a puppet made Ximena resent her family; her sisters for refusing to lean against it or even relishing in it, her parents for tolerating this and her aunt for being a manipulative force of nature. The straw that broke the camel’s back occurred weeks before her coronation as Head of the Guild where a vision came to her during a reading and showed how she would use her magic and that of the Guild to help in fighting a total war against everyone who refused to kneel to Cartagense’s power, resulting in the deaths of countless people - and herself as one of those who were supposed to carry on this blood-stained legacy. The refusal to partake in such future atrocities and the secret reveal of plans by the War Council to actually provoke a conflict and throw the country into total warfare caused Ximena to have her status as noblewoman taken from her and be banished from Cartagenth… or clean up her act, beg for forgiveness and mercy from her family and have the chance to correct her mistakes. That choice presented by her aunt in a final confrontation was refused and so Ximena, once a lady, now a nobody, fled Cartagenth.

Having to pretend to be a commoner was difficult at first but soon became a necessity, as well as having to adopt a different identity to make it beyond the Calpacian borders. Meeting her familiar and having someone in whom to confide absolutely everything was a much needed outlet for her, and some years her only constant companions were Segismundo, for whom she would’ve laid down her life, and the fear of being discovered by Calpacian spies even outside of the empire. She met Asra when contemplating to escape to Hjalle and from there on to the eastern countries beyond Nevivon and continue to live her life in anonymity, but decided to return with him to Vesuvia, a city of which she knew Calpacia fostered no diplomatic relations with. Her relationship with Asra at some point transcended mere friendship but even when that ended, they always remained amicable with each other and arguably the most important person in each other’s lives. The building in which Asra and she eventually opened as their ship was a gift from Agustín who was the only person from her old life Ximena ever contacted through magical and untraceable means. In Vesuvia, she also met magician and professional medium Sayelle bint Zahir from the city state of Bizatena at the Eastern Coast, and another exile from their respective home country, Deirdra Margalit of Calpacia’s neighboring kingdom Oriol.

She died from the Red Plague at the age of 34 while trying help Julian, with whom she had common friends, to find a cure for the illness that had already claimed thousands within the city. The efforts of those close to her did little in preventing her passing, and yet she woke up a year later with no memory of her previous life, her friends and the bond to her familiar being severed beyond repair.
