LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
April 10, 2024 (Wednesday)
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
APR 11, 2024
Prime minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and his wife, Yuko Kishida, are in Washington, D.C., tonight at a state dinner hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. The dinner is part of a state visit, the fifth for this administration.
Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have worked to strengthen ties to countries in the Indo-Pacific to weaken the dominance of China in the region, and Japan is the key nation in that partnership. “We celebrate the flourishing friendship between the United States and Japan,” Dr. Biden said Tuesday. “Our nations are partners in building a world where we choose creation over destruction, peace over bloodshed, and democracy over autocracy.”
During talks today, Biden and Kishida committed to strengthening the defense and security frameworks of the two countries so they can work together effectively, especially in a crisis. The new frameworks include intelligence sharing, defense production, satellite cooperation, pilot training, cybersecurity, humanitarian assistance, and technological cooperation. Affirming the ties of science and education between the countries, the leaders announced that two Japanese astronauts would join future American missions and, Biden said, “one will become the first non-American ever to land on the moon.”
That cooperation both takes advantage of and builds on economic ties between the two countries. In a press conference with Kishida on Wednesday, Biden noted that Japan is the top foreign investor in the U.S., and the U.S. is the top foreign investor in Japan. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have announced investments of $2.9 billion, $1 billion, and $15 billion respectively in Japan over the next several years, largely in computer and digital advances. Japanese corporations Daiichi Sankyo, Toyota, Honda Aircraft, Yaskawa Electric Corporation, Mitsui E&S, and Fujifilm announced investments in the U.S., primarily in manufacturing.
In a press conference, Kishida told reporters that “[t]he international community stands at a historical turning point. In order for Japan, the U.S., the Indo-Pacific region, and, for that matter, the whole world to enjoy peace, stability, and prosperity lasting into the future, we must resolutely defend and further solidify a free and open international order based on the rule of law.”
“This is the most significant upgrade in our alliance…since it was first established,” Biden said. While he noted that lines of communication with China remain open—he spoke with Chinese president Xi Jinping last week—the strengthening of ties to Japan comes in part from concern about the Chinese threat  to Taiwan, a self-ruled island that the Chinese government considers its own. Leaders are increasingly concerned that the Republicans’ refusal to fund Ukraine has emboldened not only Russia but also China.
Tomorrow, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., of the Philippines will join Biden in a bilateral meeting before Marcos, Biden, and Kishida join in the first trilateral meeting of the three. Kishida will also address a joint session of Congress.
Kenneth Weinstein of the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank, suggested today that Japan “has quietly become America’s most important ally,” “playing a central role in meeting our nation’s principal strategic challenge: the threat posed by the People’s Republic of China, especially the defense of Taiwan.” Weinstein also notes that Japan’s longstanding engagement in Southeast Asia means it has “forged relations of deep trust” there among countries that often eye the U.S. with deep distrust.
Outside of news about the Japanese prime minister’s visit, U.S. news today was consumed by reactions to yesterday’s decision by the Arizona Supreme Court to permit the enforcement of an 1864 law that is currently interpreted as a ban on all abortions except to save the mother’s life.
President Biden issued a statement condemning the “extreme and dangerous abortion ban,” calling it “a result of the extreme agenda of Republican elected officials who are committed to ripping away women’s freedom.”
“Vice President Harris and I stand with the vast majority of Americans who support a woman’s right to choose,” he continued. “We will continue to fight to protect reproductive rights and call on Congress to pass a law restoring the protections of Roe v. Wade for women in every state.”
Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Tucson, Arizona, on Friday to respond to the ruling. According to Hans Nichols of Axios, she had been planning to travel to Arizona anyway but quickly shifted her visit to make it a campaign trip, allowing her to comment more freely on Trump and the Republicans who were responsible for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the imposition of abortion bans since.
Harris has been out front on the issue of reproductive rights, meeting more than 50 times with groups in at least 16 states since the Supreme Court handed down the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision in June 2022, overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that recognized the right to abortion. This year, on the January 22 anniversary of the Roe decision, she announced a “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour.
“Extremists across our country continue to wage a full-on attack against hard-won, hard-fought freedoms as they push their radical policies,” she said. “I will continue to fight for our fundamental freedoms while bringing together those throughout America who agree that every woman should have the right to make decisions about her own body—not the government.”
Yesterday illustrated what the overturning of Roe v. Wade has wrought. The Republicans who were celebrating that overturning two years ago are now facing an extraordinary backlash, and they are well aware that Arizona is a key state in the 2024 presidential election. Former president Trump has boasted repeatedly that he was responsible for nominating the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe, supported a national abortion ban, and even called for women who get an abortion to be punished.
But today he swung around again, telling reporters that he would not sign a national abortion ban if it came to his desk. To be sure, as Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo notes, there’s no reason to think he wouldn’t sign such a bill, but the fact he is denying that he would and is running away from the issue shows just how much it hurts the Republicans with voters.
Harris’s trip, along with Biden’s constant travel, shows a willingness to crisscross the country to meet voters that dovetails with new statistics out about the Biden-Harris campaign. While Trump has largely stayed at Mar-a-Lago, has fewer than five staffers in each of the battlefield states, and has closed all the offices that made up the Republican National Committee’s minority outreach program, the Biden-Harris campaign has 300 paid staffers in 9 states, and 100 offices in regions crucial to the 2024 election.

Figures published on Friday from Albania’s 2023 headcount shows the total population has fallen by around 409,000 people, or some 14 per cent, since the 2011 census, when some 2.8 milion people lived in the country.
“There are [now] 2,412,113 inhabitants, who make up 755,950 families with an average size of 3.2 members per family and who live in 1,082,529 ordinary homes,” the head of the Institute of Statistics, INSTAT, Elsa Dhuli, told a press conference.
The census took place from September to November 2023 after being delayed several times because of the COVID-19 pandemic and an earthquake in 2019.
Jorida Tabaku, an opposition MP, told BIRN that the long delay in the publication of the final results had been “pointless”, noting that the 2011 census did not need six months for the publication of the results, and when the technology has become better now.
“This shows not only a lack of seriousness on the part of the government but also a weak administration. I don’t know why it needed so much time for such a small country,” Tabaku told BIRN.
Tabaku highlighted the migration issue and the clear ageing of the population.
“Unfortunately, Albanians have decreased by 400,000 inhabitants, proving the immigration crisis and the continuous depopulation that has not only increased the average age of our country by two years to 42 years but also the decrease in the number of young people. From the INSTAT figures … young people have decreased by 6.4% while the elderly have increased by 13.7%,; we have more elderly people, and less and less young people,” she noted.
Tabaku said the trend was alarming. “In relation to historical data, the Albania of 2024 is less in number than the Albania of 1976, and this is another alarming sign, not just because we have decreased [compared] to the population five decades ago but because … the aging of the country is [now] inevitable,” she concluded.
Albania’s government has been the target of criticism from the opposition over mass migration, which Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama has dismissed many times, claiming it is a normal “historical trend”.
In the summer of 2022 alone, some 12,000 Albanians crossed the sea from France to Britain in small boats. According to the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, some 16,000 Albanians applied for asylum in Britain in 2022; roughly 12,000 of them arrived irrregularly by small boats across the Channel.
The 2011 census drew widespread criticism for allegedly under-counting the Roma and Egyptian communities in Albania, which had a knock-on effect, as budgetary funds allocated for minorities for education, employment and social welfare are relsted to their overall numbers.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning secretaries of state nationwide of "extremely alarming" threats in anticipation of the elections taking place across the country.
Election security has become a significant issue since the 2020 presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The close election that took days to officially call in Biden's favor led to a litany of lawsuits and accusations by some conservatives, including Trump, that the results were compromised, eventually leading to the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Trump awaits a criminal trial after being indicted on four counts in Washington, D.C., for allegedly working to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the Capitol riot. Charges include conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.
Last August, Trump and 18 others were indicted by a Georgia grand jury for allegedly attempting to overturn the state's 2020 results. The Republican front-runner for the 2024 nomination has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
"The threat environment, unfortunately, is very high," Timothy Langan, executive assistant director for the Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch of the FBI, said last week at the winter conference of the National Association of Secretaries of State in Washington, according to Stateline. "It is extremely alarming."
Newsweek reached out to the FBI via email for comment.
Langan reportedly advised caution to gathered secretaries of state and election officials about familiar and new cyberattacks, including an urging of vigilance in the face of violent threats that may affect their safety.
Election officials were also reportedly told that voter databases could be targeted via phishing or ransomware attacks conducted by domestic or foreign individuals or entities who want to sow doubt in the electoral process. That includes spreading misinformation and disinformation and addressing rapid technological changes spurred by artificial intelligence (AI).
"You need to conduct assessments and there are groups out there to assist [the process], whether at state or county levels because unless you understand what your vulnerabilities are, you can't do anything about it," Aaron Thacker, spokesperson for Democratic Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, told Newsweek on Wednesday.
"We can't just be afraid of these threats; we have to act on them," he added. "And that means to prepare."
Thacker said that Fontes and the state of Arizona, whose election officials were present at last week's conference, have been working in various facets to show the public that its elections are fair.
That has included updating an elections procedure manual approved in December by Governor Katie Hobbs and Attorney General Kris Mayes, correcting misinformation about ballot drop boxes, the successful completion of a "rigorous" certification and recertification training program for election workers, and multi-day "tabletop" exercises educating citizens and stakeholders in over a dozen counties on "deep fakes" and AI-related disruptions.
He said that future outreach will involve educating both the media and members of law enforcement on election-related protocols—saying the American public also needs to be critical thinkers and understand how elections actually work, as those who do not may spread conspiracy theories, which hurts overall confidence in institutions.
"At the end of the day, we have an elections process that works, and it has worked for a long time...Quite frankly, so much of this is less about actual manipulation of actual elections and ballots than themes people are buying into. So, we have to communicate that. We have always had free and fair elections."
Even as recent as last August, a CNN poll showed that 69 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independent voters viewed Biden's victory as illegitimate—an increase from 63 percent who thought the same in early 2023.
Dominion Voting Systems is one of the privately-owned voting equipment companies that received financial restitution after suing Fox News for $1.6 billion for defamation due to statements made by Fox News hosts regarding the legitimacy of the 2020 election. They ultimately settled out of court for $787.5 million.

Indonesia's EV Communities: Powering the Future of Electric Mobility
Tumblr media
The Indonesian Electric Car Community, known as Koleksi, recently celebrated three years of championing the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. Founded on May 21, 2021, Koleksi has made remarkable strides in promoting green energy and sustainable transportation in Indonesia.
Fast-Growing Community
Since its establishment, Koleksi has rapidly expanded across the nation, now boasting over 200 active members. A significant portion of the community, more than 90%, resides in the Jabodetabek area, which includes Banten and Bandung. These members come from various backgrounds, driving a range of EV brands and models. Koleksi stands as the first and largest EV user association in Indonesia, playing a crucial role in advocating for sustainable energy in the transportation sector.
Despite the early stages of EV adoption in Indonesia, Koleksi has quickly positioned itself as a leading force in the movement. It brings together EV owners from all walks of life, united by a shared vision: creating a greener, more sustainable future for the country’s transportation infrastructure. The community is driven by the goal of making a positive impact on both the environment and the nation's energy landscape.
Official Recognition and Support
One of Koleksi's proudest accomplishments is being officially recognized by the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI). This endorsement has elevated the community’s credibility and strengthened its role as the leading EV association in Indonesia. Recognition from IMI is not just a badge of honor but also a vital step in advancing Koleksi’s mission to accelerate EV adoption nationwide.
With IMI’s support, Koleksi has become a powerful voice in the growing EV ecosystem in Indonesia. This recognition helps the community influence key decisions and policies aimed at expanding the country’s electric vehicle infrastructure. Koleksi’s efforts are paving the way for a future where electric vehicles are a common sight on Indonesian roads.
Program Innovations Driving Impact
Beyond its growing membership, Koleksi has been actively engaging with key stakeholders from various sectors. The community’s initiatives focus on legal, technological, educational, and environmental aspects, fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors. These programs aim to create a holistic approach to promoting sustainable transportation and responsible energy use.
Koleksi has launched several impactful initiatives, including awareness campaigns that highlight the importance of clean energy and proper waste management. One of the community’s key focuses is educating the public on the responsible disposal of electronic waste, particularly EV batteries, to ensure that the shift to green energy does not create new environmental challenges.
By working closely with government agencies, private companies, and other organizations, Koleksi is ensuring that its efforts extend far beyond just promoting electric cars. Their work encompasses a broader goal of integrating sustainable practices into the nation’s transportation and energy systems. This forward-thinking approach has made Koleksi a pioneer in the push for a cleaner, more eco-friendly Indonesia.
Key Milestone – 3rd Anniversary Celebration
Koleksi marked its third anniversary with a grand celebration at the Ibis Style Hotel in BSD, Tangerang, last Sunday. The event not only commemorated the community’s achievements but also served as a rallying call for all stakeholders in the EV industry to join the green energy movement. The event's theme, "Small Step, Big Impact," emphasized that even small efforts can lead to significant environmental change.
Coinciding with the anniversary celebration, Koleksi held its first National Conference (Munas), where new leaders were elected to serve from 2024 to 2027. This gathering underscored the community’s growth and the need for stronger leadership as it continues to expand. The new leaders are expected to guide Koleksi through its next phase, ensuring that the community remains at the forefront of Indonesia’s EV movement.
Partnership with the Government and Private Sector
A key factor in Koleksi's success has been its collaboration with both government institutions and private enterprises. The community’s initiatives are aligned with national sustainability objectives, making it a crucial player in Indonesia’s journey toward widespread EV adoption.
Koleksi’s partnerships with government agencies allow them to work directly with policymakers to advocate for favorable regulations and policies that support the use of electric vehicles. These interactions are essential for creating an environment where EVs can thrive, ensuring that the necessary infrastructure, incentives, and legal frameworks are in place to facilitate growth.
In addition to government collaborations, Koleksi has formed strong partnerships with automobile manufacturers, green energy providers, and waste management companies. These relationships ensure that the community’s impact extends beyond just driving EVs; they are contributing to the development of an integrated system that supports sustainable transportation and responsible resource use.
By working hand-in-hand with both public and private sectors, Koleksi is laying the groundwork for a future where electric vehicles are not only common but also a key part of Indonesia’s push toward environmental sustainability.
Road to Success – A Greener Future Ahead
As it celebrates three years of progress, Koleksi has already made significant contributions to the adoption of electric vehicles in Indonesia. The community has grown in both size and influence, establishing itself as a key player in the nation’s green energy movement.
Looking ahead, Koleksi is committed to continuing its advocacy for policies that promote the EV industry. The community plans to deepen its partnerships with the government, private sector, and the public to ensure that electric vehicles become a central part of Indonesia’s transportation network. Their long-term vision is clear: to get more people on the road with electric vehicles, driving the country toward a greener, more sustainable future.
