Finding the First Gay Kiss - Diary of a Big Ole Gay 11.20.22 Part 1

I have reached some level of stability in the research department and have reached ONE HUNDRED AND NINE films in the list. this was done by combining a few different resources on the topic namely these three. these were not the only article on the subject but I have managed to create a pretty strong compendrium of pre-1970s queer films from The Kiss by Edword Muybridge, (or however you spell it), to Sunday Bloody Sunday in 1971. I chose SBS btw since it is the most clearest of queer kisses that shows up under initial research.

So Far I have found exactly one kiss that I find to be explicetly Gay and that is 1914's Zapatas Gang dir Urban Gad and of course staring the famous Die Asta Nielsen. You would think that that would be the end of this escapade but allow me to give you a piece of my current video essay on the topic.

"So we’re kinda at an impasse with this essay. Because I’m asking a question that arguably has a finite answer but will that answer be satisfying. On one hand I do want the answer to be obscure. For instance the early less praised works of a foriegn film actress who is now lost to obscurity because of the rise of the talkies and the way that censoring destroyed her appeal in the americas. But on the other hand it feels like a copout. 

The thing I love about studying queer history is seeing the fact that queer people have always existed. There's always been people like Josephine Baker and George Tooker, Cadmus, Leyendeker, Hirshfield, Ulrich, Kahlo, O’keefe, The Public Universal Friend and King James and England and Scotland. And What I love about writing this essay is that I get to uncover this. I get to dust off all this queer gay shit from the past and say hey Fucking Haes Code, hey fucking nazis you missed some shit. You can’t destroy everything. And if I stop now if I stop searching for these hints, these fragments, these pottery shards of sapphic writing then I’ve done a disservice. I haven’t explored this question enough. Because when I sat down and opened up the Tabula Rasu for this, the question was just a little tiny footnote, an incorrect footnote, something that had barely a mention in the compendiums on the subject. And I think we owe it to ourselves and to our ancestors to really write it all down find not just the first gay kiss but as many almost kisses, queer romances, love stories that we can find. Also for all you normies out there that are wah wah the length I will stop at Sunday Bloody Sunday but I am making you watch Kenneth Anger first. Speaking of long runtimes."

The Point of this essay isn't just to find out the answer to this question but where is all these queer stories. because if there is 70 fucking years of cinema and I can only find 4 examples when I first read into this then something has to be missing. And yeah it literally took me reading an entire academic paper on one mans queer cinema course from the 80s on JSTOR and scrounge around on countless other places to find these films and no they are not clandestine lost to the annels of history, (well kinda I mean most of Julien Eltinge films are lost to time), but they are obfuscated the answer are there but noone will tell you unless you ask. like the fucking fact THAT TENNESSEE WILLIAMS IS GAY! or James Dean or JFK or Sally Ride, or Frida Kahlo, or hundreds of other historical figures. Our history is constantly hidden from us and while its still there for us to find and rediscover we still have to do the work, unearth the queer history that while not lost in any real sense is unbeknownst to us. Its also differcult that unlike cinema which has a way of sticking around and being able to be found. ( I lot of the films I've watched so far have been on youtube), a lot of other queer intertainment during the 1910s was in theater and vauldeville, Julien Eltinge breakout role was in theater in 1911 and it wasn't until 1914 that she was cast in a movie. but even then the same yeah she was still absolutely a household name staring in several different newsreel about hollywood celebrities alongside contemporaries like MARY FUCKING PICKFORD. Die Asta was absolutely known in cinema circles and lived and reached absolute heights of talent and prestige, she ran german cinema for decades and only left berlin after the nazis took power. She fucking snubbed Hitler and got away with it.

These people existed this type of queerness wasn't hidden or at least it was a open secret. It wasn't a big surprise when in 1929 Dashell Hammett wrote explicetly gay characters into The Maltese Falcon, it wasn't a big secret when Greta Garbo went to her Sewing Circle, (garbo was a protege of Die Asta apparently), and I think plenty of people knew that Cary Grant and Rock Hudson weren't just roommates.

And So the search continues to save that history, to explore it, to show the word that the Haes Code will not wipe us out that we have a right to stand in our own history and our own culture. Onwards and Forwards.
