I had such a weird but good conversation with my brother yesterday. He was telling me about how he was feeling really alone at work, because he works with a bunch of right wing misogynists. Also, he made a political post on social media for the first time ever. Most of his friends had no idea what his political beliefs were, because he doesn’t talk about it with them. That night, he had a difficult phone conversation with a friend who has fallen into libertarian conspiracy theories and refused to vote.
And I thought about how 8 years ago, my brother was that person. I was so angry at him. He was so apathetic and uncaring. When I tried to talk to him (in 2016) about how dangerous Trump would be, he laughed at me. He was so dismissive. I cried. Things were really uncomfortable between us for a very long time after that. I moved very far away, and we rarely spoke. We only saw each other on holidays and avoided serious conversation topics.
Now though, he is like a completely different person. He deeply regrets that he didn't vote in 2016, even though it wouldn’t have made a tangible difference because we don’t live in a swing state. He feels like a coward for not speaking up before. His first time voting (ever in his life) was 2020, and he voted for Biden. He was proud to vote for Harris in this election. I knew he was voting, and I knew he had been drifting farther left over the last few years, but I had no idea how far he had come.
I feel like I got a little piece of my heart back. We used to be so close. It was so hard, feeling like I couldn’t talk to him about anything real. I am so grateful to have my brother back in my life. We need each other now, more than ever.

Ugh I hate this.
So, a friend of mine I haven't talked to in ages, because they're always busy/traveling, posted something to Facebook that said:
Tumblr media
It hit me very hard on a Jewish kind of level. I knew I was likely to be told I was derailing if I said so. But I kind of hoped I wouldn't be, just because the friend and I met in trans spaces something like 25 years ago and are both nonbinary.
What I ended up commenting was, "Ditto for Jews, IMHO. Ughhh, what a time to be alive."
What I hate about it is that my friend gave me the Jew version of the boilerplate response you'd give Aunt Nancy. List a fuckton of marginalized groups, add Palestinians here and in Palestine first, close with a line about how focusing on one group doesn't mean anything about the other groups but raising another group is intentionally redirecting.
adhdsskklllljsshjklfff I KNOW. And I know that you "had" to specifically add Palestinians in there to redirect away from antisemitism even while telling me I'm redirecting.
I wrote back,
I'm not trying to redirect. I'm saying yes, it's going to be fucking hell for us as trans people. And also, some of the specific things that are the most terrifying for me as a trans person are likewise going to be fucking hell for me as a Jew.
I fall into five of these categories (trans, poor, disabled, Jewish, have a reproductive system) but I'm fucking terrified of another Trump round on these two specifically.
I'm terrified of having to live through this man once again smacking the metaphorical button that turbo-charges everybody's latent belief that we're pedophiles, morally corrupting society, and/or inherently shady and deceitful and Bad.
I have been watching people cast both trans people and Jewish people that same way since Trump's first run.
I mean, yes, that's been the core of most cissexist and antisemitic tropes for a long, long time. But it's so incredibly open and accepted now.
Trump fucked over disabled poor people, and people with reproductive systems, in a LOT of ways. But I didn't also see a major increase in people publicly demonizing us, and politically weaponizing that demonization.
I'm sure that if he gets the chance, he'll once again defend crucial services, leave them unstaffed, and generally make them a lot harder for anyone to access. He'll tax the poor and waive everything for the rich. He'll strip funding for disabled student services of all sorts. It will be HORRIBLE.
It's just that, while that stuff may affect me personally, it doesn't feel personal to me in the same way that it feels personal when a lot of regular everyday people see people like me as sinister and disgusting.
(And yes, too many people are disgusted by poverty, mental illness, and disabilities of all sorts, and see disabilities, government aid, and any kind of accommodations as a sneaky cheating lie. Maybe I'm wrong, but IME it's become much rarer, instead of much more common; and it's not taken to a "you corrupt society" kind of level.)
Looking back at the original post, I feel like the real issue is that what I was saying WASN'T "Trump will be awful for these specific two groups," or even, "Trump will be awful for Jews, stop thinking about trans people(???????)"
It was specifically that I think most outsiders won't know why this is so scary unless (or even if) they're close friends with us.
And I think, on the left, that's far more true for Jews than for trans people.
I feel like my cis friends understand that Trump would be a nightmare for us. Maybe that's specific to my friends though, idk.
But it's clearer than ever to me that my goyish friends generally don't know the first thing about antisemitism.
Worse yet, the reason I haven't talked their ears off about it on Facebook is one specific close friend not only doesn't get it, but pushes back pretty hard against it. I could still post about it, I could even hide the post from her; it's just got me feeling intimidated and weird and defensive about how others might respond.

I will say. Even though I hate my "mom" and Trump won anyway I am very grateful that both my parents despise Trump and voted against him, just because they hate him as a person AND because they care about what it would mean for me

Y'all I work in elections in the US (rip me ik) and in 2020 the state told us we weren't allowed to give out the iconic "I voted!" stickers.
......do you have ANY idea how quickly people realized it and got genuinely upset over it????
I literally had voters of all ages yelling about their stickers who were completely beside themselves bc they came, they voted in person like always despite the plague, and they COULDN'T be given their little reward sticker. I had to explain to people that no, we don't even have them in the building we had to leave them in election storage.
This was for one of the primaries, and it happened across the whole state. So a bunch of town clerks came up with ways to give them out while still being COVID safe for November and when the voters realized they were there???? They were ELATED
Then last year the state came out with special designs done by kids and people started making it a goal to get all 3 designs (even though, if you asked, we would give you all 3 at the same election) by voting in every election in the year. We also had "I registered to vote!" ones which were ALSO a big hit
We really do go feral for sticker rewards in any stage of life ig
Tumblr media
i literally love when people realize positive reinforcement works like yes its so silly isnt it. but it literally works humans love juice reward too

do not forget about reservations.
do not forget about the people on reservations.
when you are making and reading posts about dire predictions for quality of life, do not forget about reservations.
we already have issues accessing clean water. we already experience devastation from climate change. we are already going missing for our race. we are already being murdered for our culture.
it will only get worse.
it’s possible to live through. every single person indigenous to north america has a chance to live through this. i’m not trying to fear monger; i’m trying to remind you.
please do not forget about us when you assure people that “everything will be okay; people are living under far worse circumstances in other countries”.
people are living under far worse circumstances here. and it can get worse. and it will get worse. and we need you to remember that we’re here when it happens.

someday, we're gonna look back at Trump's second term. how far right it drove the country and the world. how much he emboldened the dictatorships and quasi-dictatorships in Iran, in North Korea, in Russia, in China, in Gaza. how fast we lost marriage rights and healthcare rights once he took office.
how much more he accelerated the climate crisis. how, by the end of his term, he'd stripped away so many government services, so many checks and balances, that his followers didn't even bother to try to take the Capitol building, because there was no need. anyone with any power in government was already on their side, and most of the government didn't have any power worth speaking of.
and we're going to look back at how many people voted against Biden because they saw unsourced, uncited lies about him beheading Palestinian babies. or using executive orders to send immediate emergency ammo to Israel. or sending $26B to Israel for more bombs.
we're going to pass around the too-late reports of how Russia and Iran created a network of bots to manipulate us with disinformation.
we're going to wring our hands about how long we've been manipulated like this, and shake our heads about how to recognize and stop it.
TL;DR: I don't know how the fuck y'all look at this shit and FAIL to recognize that it's the same exact thing as Trump claiming Democrats want to legalize the “execution” of babies that were already born.
Trump: "Sleepy Joe wants post-birth abortions!" You: "LMAO I cannot believe...." Twitter rando with lots of reach: "Biden is beheading Palestinian babies!" You: "OMG I KnOW, RiGHt?!?! Those are the REAL beheaded babies!!!!!!! The other ones were FAKE but Biden DID THESE ONES BY HAND AND ON PURPOSE!!!!!! GENOCIDE JOE AMIRITE"

I thought this seemed odd because 20 million votes is a lot in a country with somewhere around 330 million people.
So I googled it:
It's good actually that Tumblr isn't letting people Blaze this, because it's simply, factually not true.
I get that this is hard. This SUCKS. But the reality is that Trump did in fact win the election -- not only through the wacky-ass Electoral College system, but the popular vote. And that's AWFUL because it means that a little over 50 percent of the voting populace in this country *chose him* **ON PURPOSE**. They saw 2017-2020, they saw everything Trump and Vance and all their cronies said and did during the campaign, and they went "yep sounds great."
But that is the reality.
20 million votes have been uncounted

If you need further help in a quick format, here is one, but i urge you to also add in the details for requiring an investigation, not just recount.
I know its a shitty situation and were tired but we still have to try to fight for a life that's worth living.
If you can blaze this post, GO FOR IT!!!
