After months of pagpapahinga and pagde-daydreaming. I finally have the energy again to write another review, this time with an Otome Isekai manhwa titled "Miss Not-Sidekick. Written by Ellian Yang, and illustrated by artist Yumyum.

It's a very light-hearted manhwa, with a comedic approach in common use Oi tropes, you would normally see in the villainess sub-genre. The story is very refreshing, and I loved the chaotic energy that the main protagonist has. I also love the romance between Lattle and Arwin. At the fact na hindi minadali ang relasyon nila.

The art style in this manhwa is also good. Although noong una medyo nakakapanibago pa siya, I ended up loving the artistic style of the Illustrator. Like a Dorito's-chin ML?

( I really wanted to see an x-ray version of Arwin (ಥ◡ಥ) )

For the more critical part of the manwha. I would say na medyo may kulang pa siya. May nabasa ako somewhere na somehow minadali daw ang storya na ito for, kaya medyo bitin siya nang onti. At honesty talagang mapapansin mo iyon sa manhwa.

Hindi na na-explore yung feelings ni Duke Kenneth para kay Latte. Hindi na rin masyadong pinakita si Prinsipe Rondemio sa loob ng nobela. Hayyssst...

Overall, I highly recommend reading this manhwa, and I'm giving this a good 4.5 starts

Good exceptions to this in webcomic form because reading is a lot to ask of a depressed dyslexic humanities student and comics are a great cheat code, also can just be amazing:

Muted by Miranda Mundt This story is set in a fantasy world focused on the society of female witches and their clans and is about a woman overcoming trauma and seperating herself from her abusive family with the help of her two female love interests and a guardian figure. She is both badass and complicated, she has trauma to overcome but don't count her out just yet, she is here to fight

Forever After by Violet Matter / Hannah Patten set in a world where a prince charming is needed to defeat the Wicked Witch. A young woman who needed to be a princess is given the role of Prince charming and is working her way through the fairytales. She is strong without having to prove it physically, she is smart but clearly needs to grow as a person

Men of the Harem by Alphatart / Yeongbin set in a fantasy with empires, emperors, concubines and consorts, you wanna meet a cut throughout emperor well here you have one and she does not care what you think of her, she is here to rule and maybe antagonise her ex on the way if she can

Your Throne by SAM in a world where gods are a distant presence and the prince is ruthless in his pursuit of power, two women will band together to challenge him when the gods through a wrench in both their plans

Unholy Blood by Jeonghyeon Kim Vampires exist and they are a threat, so let's travel with this vampire as she struggles to find answers about both herself and the world

On Tapas:

My all time favourite, Beware the Villainess by Berry Melissa does not have time for anyone's bullsh*t and is ready to conquer this world with the knowledge she took from having read the book she was just dropped into. Watch as she realises the difference between showing and telling an audience something when it comes to character writing and unites her ragtag crew of both side characters and mains to solve both her problems and those of the people she cares about with both smarts and her impressive physical skill. Also watch as she is completely oblivious to how others view her, they like you hon, that's why they are getting jealous and territorial towards each other (queer subtext thrown in, may blossom into a romance but currently she is to busy for a romance to stop and let it happen)

Master Villainess the Invincible! By Yooani, Gabi Nam, Will Bright listen the title is translated weirdly but the result of the translation is great, set in a murim world, our hero gets reborn into the body of the Villainess and had to deal with the consequences of the last host of her body's actions and tries to become a great person, also master's martial arts for fun (apparently it's a romance but I have yet to see it)

A Royal Princess with Black Hair by Ellian Yang this fantasy world with guilds, and kings and queens has a badass princesses to contend with, full of mischief and fun, this woman knows she has exceptional strength and beauty and is willing to use it to cause mischief, she is here to avoid marriage to the prince of another kingdom (who is perfect for her because it is a romance) the same way he wants to avoid marrying her, so watch them fall in love and fail to realise how well suited they are to each other as they cause mischief along the way, she will sway you over with charisma alone

Villains are Destined to Die by SUOL set in a fantasy game this woman finally free of her abusive family is not okay with becoming the Villainess of the game she just beat but it's okay because she is creative, strong willed and unwilling to roll over and give in, she will beat this game and get free (it's feminist message is undercut by the fact that she has to win over the not great male leads to get her life back and could do with more female characters but everyone is given clear motivations and the male leads are consistently called out for being trash in a way they didn't expect. Main problem I have with it is it relies on the main character being at disadvantage in terms of how she is treated socially and that triggers me but that's because it triggers me rather than a problem with the story)

The Souless Duchess by Jinsaeha in a world with magic, this woman who was abused refuses to repeat history so finds herself a strong ally, who she slowly falls in love with and overcomes problems together

War of the Princess by Hu Jin reborn into a game, our protagonist is unwilling to bend and creative in her problem solving

You will notice that many of these are still romances and all either white or Asian in terms of their characters race but these are still some of the most feminist works which have enough going on to keep my mind entertained. In the future I would like to find more with non-white or Asian leads but currently it is difficult to find even male lead stories with non-white leads so I have a feeling I will have to keep looking for now

Me: just trying to mind my own business and enjoy action heavy books because anything less will bore me to tears

Female led books: let's have very few action scenes, a slow pace, the romance be the most important thing in the entire piece and frequently toxic, and if you are lucky the female is written well if not the sexism is unavoidable, in your face and jarring every time you open the book, enjoy

GL books: you got yourself a healthy romance (sometimes) but the pace is still crawling, still no action and the romance is the entire reason you are reading this, plus sexist portrayals of women are still a thing and blatant because it is female lead (you can however get genuinely talented female authors writing it though so you get feminist portrayals of women but still slow paced)

Male lead books: loads of action, romance is sometimes there sometimes not, fast paced and has less blatant sexist portrayals of woman because the women are side characters so show up only occasionally (it's still sexist but easier to look past, if it is really sexist though you'll probably have more fun burning the hook then reading it)

BL books: healthy relationship because both sides respect each other (same as GL), action heavy, romance is important but so is the plot, fast paced, sexism is still definitely present but it is male lead so restricted to the few characters that actually show up (the sexism is in the absence of women more than their portrayal), also you frequently get the story written by a talented female author so you get all the perks of it being male lead (the action and everything) as well as genuinely well written female side characters, you just wish the female author would write the same type of stories but with female leads

Me: and this is why I like male lead and BL cause at least the sexism is avoidable and I get the fast pace my brain needs to actually read it but trust me it is as frustrating as it sounds to find books which are both feminist and action heavy
