TLV320DAC3100 first bops 🔊🎶💃🕺
OK, after many hours spent with Claude on writing a driver for the TLV320DAC3100 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TLV320DAC3100IRHBR/2260591), we finally have it configured using our driver, and playing an MP3 stream on this ESP32. This I2S DAC has a particularly complex PLL and audio-routing system, so it's not one where you can just pipe in I2S data and have it magically play. One nice thing we got working on is the MCLK, which is generated from the BCLK, so it'll work great with anything from an Arduino-compatible to a single-board computer like Raspberry Pi. We're hoping to get the headphone detection working next so that we can turn off the amp when the headphone is plugged in. Also, it should be able to control the volume from the headset buttons. Also, we want to get the internal beep generator going so we can make tones separate from the audio stream for UI notifications.

TLV320DAC3100 take 2 🎧🔊
After much wrasslin’ with the TLV320DAC3100, we finally have a library that properly configures the PLL and sets up both the headphone and speaker output well enough. However, we made a mistake with the headphone wiring, accidentally swapping ground and mic, and we’re experiencing some noise in the headphones when the Class D speaker output is active.
We’re rerouting the board to separate the speaker outputs from the TRRS jack to address this. While at it, we’re also exposing the MICDET and bias pins—interestingly, the mic detects can double as a potentiometer input for volume control. The board grew by 50 mils, but we believe this version is the one. After testing, it should be ready for sale.
We’re excited to get this board dialed in since we plan to use this chip in several designs!

We're doing the show tonight or Tues, so much is going on. Lots more questions came in too! Post yours before we go live…
This week was not a big week for engineering because we're neck-deep in tariff management! We had a video on Wednesday about the first round of tariffs announced—they have since been ratcheted up to 20% + 125% = 145% minimum on products from China and Hong Kong. "Retaliatory" tariffs on products from other countries have been paused, but there's still a 10% global tariff.
Then on Friday, it looks like some HTS codes
were "exempted" temporarily
Let's take a look at the CBP (link) and the exempt tariff codes
and see how they might apply to the kinds of stuff we use to do our electronics engineering.
The Great Search - How to Source Tariffed & Non-Tariffed Items on DigiKey

Since this is the topic of the day, we'll be looking at how to purchase an item from DigiKey with tariffs in mind. DigiKey is a free trade zone, which means that if you're not in the USA, you will not have to pay additional tariffs on goods that are re-exported. However, for USA destinations, the new tariffs can add a significant cost if the component has its last manufacturing step in China.
Let's use the example of a simple I2C-controlled temperature sensor to see how our sourcing decisions may be impacted by tariffs.

Prototype of a Compute Module backpack ready! ⚡🎒
OK, our 10164227-1004A1RLF (https://www.digikey.com/short/3z8mb49f) Compute Module connectors came in, so we're ready to fab this prototype of our Compute Module 4 or 5 backpack. Timon updated it to have an EYESPI connector to bring out some GPIO's and make it easy to connect small displays. There's so much packed on here; we're worried about how we're going to make a test jig for so many connectors! We may need to use an IO multiplexer to address so many pins with a microcontroller - while using a CM5 to do the test sounds 'fun,' it would not be good to have such a delicate board used for testing hundreds or thousands of these in the fabrication department.

TPS65131 split boost converter revision ✅🔧
We designed this split +12/-12 power supply board based on the TPS65131 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS65131RGER/1672464) a few months ago, but it languished while we worked on some other projects. We had an issue where the negative power rail was unstable. Thankfully, we found a thread that suggested slowing down the VNEG feedback loop (https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management-group/power-management/f/power-management-forum/628380/tps65131-q1-abnormal-operation-of-tps65131-q1-s-vneg) with a 51k resistor. We hand-soldered that in, and it worked nicely. Then, the other fix was to flip around the trimmers so the turn direction matched the expected behavior. This should be good to book a second prototype, and then it can go into the shop.

We stock and use a couple of different I2C ADCs, such as the NAU7802
and the HX711
Both of these are kinda designed specifically for load cells. This is a more general-purpose 24-bit ADC using the ADS122C04
with adjustable 1x to 128x gain, up to 2ksps and an internal reference. It can be single or differential input. Good for sensitive things like RTDs, thermocouples, or resistive bridges like load cells! Coming soon.

BQ25185 all-in-one Li-Poly board with 3.3V out 🔋🌞⚡
We had a previous version of this 3.3V buck output board with an MCP73831, but now we've replaced it with a BQ25185, which makes it a little more flexible: Vin can be up to 18V, and solar panels will work, too. There's also a power path and 4.5V regulated output. This charger chip can handle LiFePO4, but for that chip, we might swap the buck for a buck-boost or a boost / LDO to get the solid 3.3V output.
