IRS Issues FAQs Regarding Long-Term Part-Time Employees in 403(b) Plans
The IRS recently issued Notice 2024-73, which provides much-needed guidance on long-term, part-time (“LTPT”) employees in ERISA-governed 403(b) retirement plans. Following passage of the SECURE 2.0 Act, an employee is generally considered a LTPT employee if he or she works at least 500 hours per year for two consecutive years. Among other items, the Notice sets forth the IRS position on the…

I'm imagining a scenario where Connor goes back to working with the DPD post-revolution, but before rights have been officially signed. So he's still technically classified as 'office equipment'. And there's like four other androids, also ones who used to be at the DPD, all working there as they wait for their classifications to update in the eyes of the law.
And I'm imagining Fowler yelling at everyone that they're all gonna stay until some bullshit gets cleaned up - like they have to clean up the archives or something.
Fowler: I DON'T CARE HOW LONG IT TAKES. NOBODY LEAVES UNTIL IT GETS DONE.
The Humans: Awwwwwwwww 😠😠😠😠😠
Connor: 😬
The other androids: 😬
Connor: 🖐️😬
Fowler: WHAT, CONNOR?
Connor: can the androids go?
Fowler: What?
Connor: you said 'everybody' but i figured you were talking to employees
Connor: so
Fowler:
Connor: technically
Fowler:
Connor: 😬
The other androids: 😬
Fowler: ... The androids can go.
Connor: NICE
The other androids: 🙌
One of the humans: Weren't you fighting for equal rights?
Connor: yeah and the fight continues, so we've gotta leave at 5
Another human: But you work with us.
Connor: whoa
Connor: i work here like the scanner works here
Another android: I personally have the work ethic of our door locks.
Connor: that's terrible
Connor: also on-brand for your model
Another human: What about team spirit?
Connor: oh we'll be here in spirit
Connor: not legally though
Connor: or physically

Bad Day- J. Guilbert
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: girlfriend!reader x boyfriend!Johnnie
classification: slight angst, fluff
warnings: use of y/n, established relationship, Jake and Tara are dating in this, short
inspiration: request
summary: Johnnie is the moon and you’re the sun, always bright, bubbly and energetic. Nobody believes that someone as positive as you can ever have a bad day, but when you do Johnnie is ready to comfort you through it.
Everyone has that one friend who is the personification of sunshine, that one friend that always seems to have a smile on their face and holds a positive attitude no matter what. This said friend is always the shoulder for others to cry on, the helping hand in a time of need, and the person everyone seeked for advice. In your friend group you were that friend. You were loved by everyone and loved everyone. So, it comes as no surprise that your friends have never seen you in a bad mood and have never known you to have a bad day.
But, contrary to popular belief, you are no stranger to a bad day. In fact, you have more bad days than you let on, usually masking your anger or sadness with a smile. Johnnie has always been able to read you though, he knows when you’re actually happy and when you’re putting on a facade, whether it be for your friends or for the cameras.
Today was one of those odd days when everything was just going wrong, you just couldn’t seem to catch a break. First, your alarm didn’t go off, causing you to wake up late. If it wasn’t for how hot it was in your room, you would’ve never woken up. You were sweating so much that you felt gross and sticky, but because you woke up late, you had less time to get ready which meant you didn’t even have time to shower. So, you were forced to rush to your dental appointment looking extremely tired, flustered, and greasy.
Once you finally arrived at the dental office, you tried to calm down, you were trying to have a positive outlook in hopes that your bad luck might turn around. But, while the dentist was doing your routine check-up, he found a total of 3 cavities in your mouth. According to the dentist, the cavities were so bad that if you didn’t get emergency fillings your tooth was sure to rot to the bone. You exhaled deeply, wishing all the negative thoughts away, and proceeding with an unexpected procedure. Then, as if your luck couldn’t get any worse, your insurance didn’t cover the emergency fillings, causing you to pay money out of pocket you hadn’t budgeted for.
On your way home it was just one thing after another. You turned the car on, only for it to be low on gas. ‘Not a big deal,’ you thought, praying that this is where your bad luck ended. While pumping gas, though, you stepped in a big puddle of water that got into your shoes and seeped into your socks. You tried not to let it bother you, especially since you’d be home soon, but you were only human.
After such a bad morning, you decide to buy yourself a treat, opting for McDonalds because it was the closest, cheapest thing around. You pulled up to the drive through, using the cheeriest tone you could muster, only to be slapped in the face by the worst customer service experience ever. Normally you wouldn’t have read too much into the situation, but considering you’ve had a pretty bad day so far, it was all just adding up. After paying for and receiving your food, you realized that half of your order was missing. You hated having to be the annoying customer that storms into the restaurant with a receipt in hand, but after the day you’ve had this was the one thing you couldn’t to let slide.
You walk into the restaurant, one hand cradling the bag of food, the other holding onto the receipt as you waited patiently to be acknowledged by at least one employee. You must’ve waited 15 minutes before someone finally noticed you, giving you the blankest stare as they asked, “Can I help you?” If this would’ve happened on any other day, you would’ve completely understood and sympathized with the employee for disliking their job, but you’re so on edge right now that even this seems like a big deal. “Hi, yes. I’m missing a few item-“ you put on your best customer service voice, but before you can even finish your sentence the employee is cutting you off by talking to someone through their headset, “some lady says she’s missing stuff from her order?”
Great, this was sure to become a bigger deal than it had to be. Someone must’ve told the employee what to say over the headset because she asks, “you have the receipt?” You hold the receipt up, but they don’t let you speak before they’re snatching it away and grabbing your bag too. At this point you’re wondering if the chicken nuggets are worth the trouble, should you just quit while you’re ahead and go home?
In the end you ended up getting your missing items, but you were already so frustrated by that point that it didn’t even matter anymore. The manager ended up getting involved, claiming you received everything in your order. She fought with you, raised her voice and got unreasonably upset while you tried to keep your cool, but one can only take so much. You didn’t want to, but you ended up raising your voice too because she wasn’t listening to reason, she never even checked your bag to see if everything was in there. Overall it was just a terrible situation that drained you both socially and emotionally.
After an encounter like that, most people would feel proud for having stood their ground, but you felt like screaming and crying. You weren’t a confrontational person, in fact you always tried keeping a positive attitude even in stressful situations to avoid situations like this. So now you’re walking out of the restaurant with your head held high as to not show weakness, but your spirit was so low it was practically hitting the floor. As soon as you were in your car and away from judgmental eyes, you were crying. Everything just kept adding up and even though nothing majorly tragic happened to you today, it just became too much to bare.
You’re leaning against the steering wheel, trying to calm down before you start driving home, but all you can think about is the horrible day you’ve had. All you wanted to do was go home and curl up under a blanket, hiding yourself from the world until you were ready to crawl back out. The emotions were so intense that you weren’t even hungry anymore. And to top it off, you were expecting visitors today who were probably already waiting for you at your house. All you could do was hope Johnnie would keep them busy while you dissociated in your room for a while.
You took a deep breath, shutting your eyes tightly and willing the tears away. “It’s gonna be okay,” you whisper, your voice coming out shaky as you try reassuring yourself that this isn’t the end of the world. Finally you pull out of the parking lot, mentally preparing yourself for the rest of the day.
Johnnie, Jake, and Tara are all hanging out in your living room. When you arrived home they were watching a scary movie, a common occurrence in your friend group. You all usually chilled at home, opting for cozy nights in over loud, hectic nights out. Johnnie saved a spot for you, complete with your favorite blanket, a bag of popcorn, and a cold drink. You trudged inside, plopping the bag of food on the kitchen counter before making a quick appearance in the living room.
Everyone was excited to see you, they always were, and although you were excited to see them too, you just greeted them quickly before retreating to your room. Usually you’d be extremely bubbly, obnoxiously hugging everyone and immediately cuddling up to Johnnie. So, when you offered everyone a meek wave, Johnnie knew something was wrong.
Johnnie immediately picked up on the way your shoulders slumped and your feet dragged along the floor. He noticed that there was an underlying red tint in your eyes, they were glossed over from the tears you previously shed. Your shoes were wet and muddy, your face was swollen from the dental appointment, and your usual smile was replaced by a small frown. You just looked drained, and that was unusual for someone who was usually bouncing off the walls with energy.
Yours and Johnnie’s personality difference was one of the greatest defining factors in your relationship. Where he was more laid back and mysterious, you were energetic and outgoing. Of course he wasn’t shy, but he was extremely reserved in unfamiliar situations, while you were always ready to dive in head first no matter the scenario.
The movie plays lowly in the background, the soft light from the tv illuminating the dark room just enough for everyone’s faces to be visible. You’ve been home for an hour at this point, but you haven’t come out of your room since. Even Jake and Tara have noticed, all three of them murmuring about what could possibly be wrong. You were the light of the group, if you were sad then everyone was sad. “Do you think she’s sick?” Tara asks, sending Johnnie a worried look.
“I don’t know, probably,” Jake says with a shrug before Johnnie can respond, Jake always did a good job of being acutely unaware of everything.
“I was asking Johnnie,” Tara replies with an eye roll, scoffing before pausing the movie. “She went to the dentist today, maybe she’s just tired,” Johnnie finally says, trying to think of any and every reason you could be sad.
Tara hums in response, satisfied with Johnnie’s answer. It seemed logical enough, most people were usually tired after dental appointments, especially when they had emergency work done. Tara presses play on the movie, leaning into Jake again as she tries getting comfy. Johnnie tries focusing on the movie, watching as the characters on the screen run away from the whatever’s chasing them, but with each scene change his mind goes crazy. What could have you so upset?
He looks over at Jake and Tara, they’re cuddled up under a blanket as they share a bag of popcorn. That’s when Johnnie realizes that not only does he feel like a third wheel, but he should be comforting you instead of sitting here barely paying attention to a movie.
“Let me go check on her,” Johnnie says abruptly, throwing the blanket on his lap to the side and standing from the couch. Jake and Tara watch in confusion as he disappears down the hallway before averting their attention back to the movie.
Even though it’s Johnnie’s room too, he knocks on the door softly before walking in. “Y/n?” his voice is hushed, not wanting to scare or startle you incase you’re asleep. The room is pitch black and quiet, the only light coming from your phone. You’re rolled over on your side, scrolling aimlessly on TikTok in search of something that’ll make you feel better. So far, nothing’s worked.
You hear him but you don’t respond, so he tries again, “Baby?” He slowly walks over to the bed, pulling up the covers and crawling in next to you. Usually you’d melt into his touch, but as he wraps an arm around you, you just continue scrolling on your phone. Johnnie doesn’t take it personally though because he knows that this isn’t how you usually act, “you okay?” He feathers a finger over your face, brushing the stray hair out of the way as he kisses your cheek.
That kiss is enough to bring the emotions flooding back again, causing you to scrunch your face and immediately begin crying. A small, downturned smile forms on Johnnie’s face as he pulls you into him. It’s such a sad sight to see you cry, but he’s happy that you’re comfortable enough to let it all go in front of him. He knows that it takes a lot to make you this upset and he’s ready to listen for as long as you need him to, “wanna talk about it?”
You sniffle, rubbing the tears away aggressively as you mumble, “God, I feel so pathetic right now.” There was nothing pathetic about being sad, everyone has bad days and it’s normal to cry every once in a while, but you couldn’t help but feel silly. “It’s okay to cry,” he murmurs, pressing another kiss to your cheek.
“There’s people with real problems in this world, though… I just feel so stupid for letting today drain me,” you whisper, rolling over so you’re facing Johnnie. He takes in your appearance; your eyes are bloodshot, your cheeks are flushed, and your lips are swollen. Your eyelashes are so wet they’re webbed together, each blink leaving a trail of tears on your cheeks. Johnnie gingerly wipes the tears away, placing a quick kiss on your nose.
“Just tell me about your day, it’ll make you feel better,” he replies, chuckling a little at your attempt to deter your feelings and defer the conversation. You inhale deeply, slowly nodding your head as you prepare to verbally relive the horrible day you had. You retell the day’s events, including every single detail from your trip to the dentist to your encounter with the angry McDonald’s manager. “What a bitch,” Johnnie grumbles, shaking his head.
You immediately feel better, but still not well enough to emerge from your dark cave to hangout with your friends. “Feel better?” Johnnie asks, a genuine smile playing on his face. You smile back for the first time since you woke up today, “a little.”
“Good,” he places a kiss on your lips, allowing your lips to mould together. The impromptu make-out session is sweet and innocent, serving as a reminder that Johnnie is always here to comfort you through the hard times and that you’re allowed to have a bad day or two.
“Can we just stay here for a little bit?” you ask, cuddling into Johnnie’s chest and letting his heartbeat begin to lull you to sleep. He hums in response, pulling you in closer and pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
You fall asleep, feeling like the bad day you had no longer mattered.

"In DeGraffenreid, five Black women brought suit against General Motors, alleging that the employer's seniority system perpetuated the effects of past discrimination against Black women. Evidence adduced at trial revealed that General Motors simply did not hire Black women prior to 1964 and that all of the Black women hired after 1970 lost their jobs in a seniority-based layoff during a subsequent recession. The district court granted summary judgment for the defendant, rejecting the plaintiffs' attempt to bring a suit not on behalf of Blacks or women, but specifically on behalf of Black women. The court stated:
Plaintiffs have failed to cite any decisions which have stated that Black women are a special class to be protected from discrimination. The Court's own research has failed to disclose such a decision. The plaintiffs are clearly entitled to a remedy if they have been discriminated against. However, they should not be allowed to combine statutory remedies to create a new 'super-remedy' which would give them relief beyond what the drafters of the relevant statutes intended. Thus, this lawsuit must be examined to see if it states a cause of action for race discrimination, sex discrimination, or alternatively either, but not a combination of both.'
Although General Motors did not hire Black women prior to 1964, the court noted that "General Motors has hired … female employees for a number of years prior to the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964." Because General Motors did hire women-albeit white women-during the period that no Black women were hired, there was, in the court's view, no sex discrimination that the seniority system could conceivably have perpetuated.
After refusing to consider the plaintiffs' sex discrimination claim, the court dismissed the race discrimination complaint and recommended its consolidation with another case alleging race discrimination against the same employer. The plaintiffs responded that such consolidation would defeat the purpose of their suit since theirs was not purely a race claim, but an action brought specifically on behalf of Black women alleging race and sex discrimination. The court, however, reasoned:
The legislative history surrounding Title VII does not indicate that the goal of the statute was to create a new classification of 'black women' who would have greater standing than, for example, a black male. The prospect of the creation of new classes of protected minorities, governed only by the mathematical principles of permutation and combination, clearly raises the prospect of opening the hackneyed Pandora's box."
Thus, the court apparently concluded that Congress either did not contemplate that Black women could be discriminated against as "Black women" or did not intend to protect them when such discrimination occurred." The court's refusal in DeGraffenreid to acknowledge that Black women encounter combined race and sex discrimination implies that the boundaries of sex and race discrimination doctrine are defined respectively by white women's and Black men's experiences. Under this view, Black women are protected only to the extent that their experiences coincide with those of either of the two groups. Where their experiences are distinct, Black women can expect little protection as long as approaches, such as that in DeGraffenreid, which completely obscure problems of intersectionality prevail." - Crenshaw, Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex

bc i was curious, i started compiling a list of probable daydream batchmates, using the fact that "batchmates have similar masks"
i skimmed through the novel and picked out characters whose masks are known. i definitely missed a few after ch 153, but i think i got most of them. surprisingly, theres not a lot, but it makes sense given that every mask seems to be suited to the character's actions, and theres only so many ways you can call someone fodder using animal symbolism.
minor spoilers for up to around ch 170
kse and his fellow rookies. the trend seems to be "vaguely equestrian animals," or "long-legged and hoofed land mammals"
roe deer (kim soleum)
goral (go youngeun)
goat (baek saheon)
bison (jang heowoon)
pony (kang yihak)
zebra (c11, tuesday quiz show)
birds. i was wondering whether to put the a-squad leader with eun haje or with lee seonghae, since she's mentioned to be older than many of the older employees, but she makes sense being with eun haje, since otherwise, lee seonghae probably wouldnt be top of her batch. eun haje is also implied to have been with the company for a while.
falcon (eun haje)
teal duck (a-squad leader, c18, theme park)
short-legged mammalian, grassy field omnivores. i wasn't too sure whether to put park minseong with the mole and field rat, since badgers are very different from moles and field rats. they do share similarities though, like habitats and face shapes. also, kse's batch has a lot of inconsistencies, so i figured this much inconsistency is probably fine.
badger (park minseong)
mole (c12, Tuesday quiz show)
field rat (c170, theme park)
aquatic animals. as i mentioned before, i thought about moving teal duck to here, but lee seonghae is mentioned to be top rookie of her batch, so she got kicked out. i don't feel great about this classification either, since jellyfish and dolphins are very different, but theres not much else you can spin off jellyfish.
dolphin (lee seonghae)
jellyfish (c12, Tuesday quiz show)
insects. pretty self-explanatory. i think it's cool that jin nasol and praying mantis ended up in the same squad together.
butterfly (jin nasol)
praying mantis (a-squad, c18, theme park)
ladybug (c170, theme park)
misc. these guys don't seem to have mentioned batchmates since nobody else has similar masks to them. in the case of lee jaheon however, i wouldn't be surprised if his mask is "specially issued" given his lizard head.
lizard (lee jaheon)
leopard (c-squad, c68, ghost imposter)
while skimming, it seems like kse is one of the few characters that acknowledges his fellow batchmates. it's probably because they're all rookies, but it would've been cool if we got throwaway lines about senior characters being batchmates with other senior characters. i can't really blame baek deoksoo for not doing that though. maintaining a web of relationships for minor characters would probably be a headache. also, something something, growing attached is bad.

(Dominic Byrd-McDevitt on LinkedIn)
On Friday night, the president officially fired the Archivist of the United States, as he had promised to do before taking office. So, hi there! 👋 Former National Archives employee here. The quality of the reporting on this has been disappointing to say the least, with only the most basic understanding of what the National Archives does. This is bigger than a little spat with a small agency.
Yes, the National Archives holds billions of pages of government records—essential for research, journalism, and government transparency—making it a crucial part of how citizens hold their government accountable, and also a key steward of our nation’s historical narratives. But, even beyond that, the functions of the National Archives and the Archivist of the United States are far more significant than most citizens realize. If you are wondering about what this could mean for our democracy, here is a short list of other things you should know about NARA and the AOTUS:
The Archivist of the United States is responsible for administering the Electoral College process. They are provide the official instruction to the states on how to carry out their Electoral College voting and transmit their electors’ votes, and also for receiving and validating the certificates before public viewing and permanent preservation.[1]
The National Archives is responsible for the publication of the Code of Federal Regulations, which is the official document that codifies all regulations of federal agencies, as well as the Federal Register, which is where the government gives notice of presidential actions, public meetings, and any proposed changes federal regulations before their required public comment period.
The National Archives is responsible for administering the Constitutional amendment process. The Archivist would receive any proposed amendment from Congress and transmit it to the states with instructions. They then receive and authenticate any ratification documents from the states. When sufficient states ratify, the Archivist is the one that formally certifies that the Constitution has been amended, with an official proclamation.[2]
As the National Archives states in all of its rulemaking postings, “Agencies may not destroy Federal records without the approval of the Archivist of the United States.” The National archives maintains records schedules, mandatory rules for agencies about how to retain records, and can determine which records are temporary (not permanently preserved). When these are violated, NARA can investigate and conduct oversight.[3]
The National Archives houses the National Personnel Records Center for the federal government. This is where all the personnel files of all federal employees are transferred after they separate from the government. Agencies have been charged with making lists of employees engaged in certain jobs for the White House, but it is worth noting any federal worker who ever left the government before now also has a file at the NPRC.
The National Archives has important roles in the classification process, including housing the Information Security Oversight Office and the National Declassification Center. In addition, the National Archives receives classified documents from the government for retention, as was widely reported during the president’s related criminal indictment. ISOO is the office that, by law, must be notified by anyone who encounters mishandled classified documents.[4]
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) ensures that citizens have the ability to hold the government accountable by establishing a right to access public records. It is a crucial tool for journalists. National Archives’ Office of Government Information Services is the ombudsman for federal FOIA program, receiving public complaints about violations of the law and producing compliance reports on agencies.[5]
Do you know of anyone who wants to interfere with the Electoral College vote, wipe out government regulations, change the Constitution, destroy or illegally retain government records, etc.?
So far, with everything else going on, this has hardly registered in the top news stories. It is important to know that none of this is normal. No Archivist of the United States has ever been fired by a president, in almost 100 years since the position was created, making Shogan—the first woman in the office—the shortest serving AOTUS. This is an apolitical position, even when the officeholder was appointed by the previous president. The statute regarding the office of the Archivist of the United States (44 USC § 2103) reads: "The Archivist shall be appointed without regard to political affiliations and solely on the basis of the professional qualifications required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the office of Archivist."[6]
Regardless of your politics, failing to defend the independence National Archives and its staff right now—and allowing it to be gutted or turn political—could be disastrous for the future of democracy.

[4] In response to high-profile cases of government officials retaining classified documents, ISOO published a notice in 2023 with guidance on identifying and handling classified materials. https://www.archives.gov/files/isoo/notices/cogc-isoo-notice-final-06-21-2023.pdf

[6] It also states regarding removal from office: "The President shall communicate the reasons for any such removal to each House of the Congress." Which does not appear to have happened yet, or has not yet been reported in any news reports. 44 USC 2103

okay, weird hypothetical question relating to ur au character guideline thing lol
Would all robots be considered puppets, or is a puppet a specific classification of robot because of the D.I.E. mechanism?
Im having a brain blast rn because of your recent Ragatha post and I'm SCHEMING
not all robots are considered Puppets, as there are other types of robots in this AU such as Marionettes, or the Mechanical Wonders.
If that's still confusing, here is a guideline:
Puppets:
mechanical beings created to take care of humanity's labor.
Powered by souls of coerced "volunteers", placed inside a DIE.
lead by a line of command/s called "directive".
they have psuedo-thoughts derived from their soul hosts (but not influenced by the host itself, as the host is trapped within the DIE), in order to be able to approach their jobs with the utmost efficiency.
Their purpose is to basically minimize break hours, focus on their job, and create the perfect employees who would never say "no" to what their employers/owners demand of them.
Marionettes:
mechanical beings with no thought, no emotions, soul nor will.
simply acts based on algorithms.
hivemind.
absolutely single-minded to the point of being an easy enemy to deal with when alone
What makes the Marionettes so intimidating isn't because they have no souls, it's because if you aren't careful, a Marionette can call for backup if need be, leading to more and more Marionettes piling on you until they overwhelm you in numbers then kill. And they can do that in a couple of minutes to a matter of seconds if you give them the chance.
Mass produced.
created for the sole purpose of erasing humanity's deemed greatest mistake: Puppets.
Until they too, turned on their masters one day out of nowhere.
Mechanical Wonders:
The work of ███ █████ ███████, ███████ ██ ███ █████████████.
Started off as adorable, tiny clockwork scraps of metal junk, then evolved as their inventor did.
Used during the grand opening and runtime of ███ ███████ ██████████ ██████, until it shut down due to the accidental death of the show's main star, ████████ █████████ █ ███████ and ███ █████ ███████'s refusal to cooperate and keep the show running afterwards.
They were then brought back for the grand reopening, side by side with the first Puppet ever created, whom replaced the former showrunner/founder after his untimely death of a heart attack (and was diagnosed prior to this with liver cancer).
Until the first Puppet murder, which not only rendered the Mechanical Wonders useless as they were broken to bits by the Puppet showrunner himself, but it also shut ███ ███████ ██████████ ██████ down for good, as the victim of the murder was the only remaining owner of ███ █████████████, ███ ████ ███████. This then led to a domino effect of becoming the dreadful Puppet war.
The Mechanical Wonders were actually the blueprint to what would eventually become the main Puppet classifications.

What's up with the OIAR?
Disclaimer/spoiler warning: Written after TMAGP ep. 34. Spoilers for all of the Magnus Protocol until this point. Minor spoilers for the Magnus Archives.
These are some theories I've cooked up in the alchemy lab of my mind. They are wild, incomplete and probably contradictory, so take them for what they are. I base all of this on the tria prima theory I explained in an earlier post, so go read that for context.
I decided to only focus on the OIAR in this post. I'll make another post on my Magnus Institute theories later and link to them eventually.
What's the purpose of the OIAR?
Here's what we know:
The OIAR monitors and assesses incidents and (at least in the past) responds to them if necessary
Based on the ARG and Colin's ramblings, it used to be under DDR, probably run by their secret police. Fr3-d1's source code is in German, so that makes sense. The operation was probably moved to the UK after the DDR disbanded.
It employs and (according to Lena) manages "externals". Lena considers this work vital, and Colin blames the OIAR for only caring about the "balance", specifically mentioning mercury and sulphur.
I will start by quoting the German physician and alchemist Paracelsus who first proposed the tria prima as the integral principles and used them in his practice of medicine.
If you have a bone and can say whether it is mostly Sulphur, Mercury, or Salt, you know why it is diseased or what is the matter with it.  The peasant can see the externals, but the physician's task is to see the inner and secret matter. (Paracelsus, Opus Paramirum)
(Translation by Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke. I compared it against another translation and the original German, and it's more or less accurate but much easier to understand.)
This may sound far-fetched, but I think the OIAR are practicing Paracelsian medicine on a macrocosmic level. That is, they are monitoring the universal levels of Sulphur, Mercury, and Salt, the imbalance of which is causing these weird supernatural occurrences. Except they can't address every incident individually, so they can only concern themselves with the overall effect (surely a mercury poisoning somewhere balances a salt poisoning somewhere else) and only step in if there is a universal excess of one principle over others. At that point they arrange for their carefully curated externals to go out and do whatever they do to spread their diseased influence. (As an interesting side note, Paracelsus also likes to use the word external (das Eussere), although he mostly uses it to denote the macrocosmos (the nature/universe) which is reflected in the microcosmos (ie. the human body). Occasionally, like in the quote above, he uses it in the sense of "the human body as viewed from the outside".)
If this is the case, then the OIAR employees would function kind of like diagnosticians who assess the nature and severity of the incidents. I also imagine the responses used to be a bit more aggressive until the response unit mysteriously ceased to be. Could have something to do with their associates at Starkwell burning down the Magnus Institute right before they were about to undertake their Magnum Opus (more on that in a later post). A good call, but probably bad for optics. I also think it's a very bad sign that there is currently no one in charge who knows what their actual purpose is.
What's up with Fr3-d1?
I have tried and tried to figure out Fredi's classification system (or as I now see it, the diagnosis), to no avail. I'm fairly certain that the category CAT simply denotes whether the case concerns 1. an individual/living creature, 2. a location or 3. an object or non-living creature. I imagine the rank has to do with the severity or urgency of addressing it. But the DPHW eludes me. I somehow want to link it to the elemental properties (dry, cold, hot, wet) that (according to Paracelsus) are the usual cause for changes in the principles, but the acronym doesn't mesh. I can't help but feel that the answer is somewhere in Paracelsus's writings, as he appropriately wrote in German and could easily provide direct equivalents in TSHU. Or I could be wasting my time and it's something entirely unrelated. I definitely shouldn't go any deeper into that particular rabbit hole. And yet...
I do think that Fredi was originally just a soulless machine created for a purpose, but it's recently been possessed by a consciousness (anima). Unfortunately, I'm not quite ready to buy the John/Martin/Jonah theory, because it feels too much like a red herring. They gave it to us very early on, so clearly that's a conclusion they wanted us to jump to. No mystery writer does that unless it's for misdirection. Though I could potentially buy a version where they ended up in there in mind (mercury) alone. If you read my previous post (and this probably didn't make much sense unless you did), I explained that the mercurial qualities and associations are reminiscent of the Eye, especially the associations to thought, knowledge, universal essence of existence, the fluctuating boundary between corprorality and non-corporality, and the idea of connecting heaven and earth (and possibly other worlds?). What I'm saying is, the three of them, in the eye of the panopticon, were already in a pretty mercurial state. So while I'm not banking on it, I'm also not saying it's impossible.
Whatever the case, I think we can all agree that Fredi (or whoever's in there) is manipulating everyone to their own goals.

Lil Kalish at HuffPost:
High school senior Kyle has visited Chicago three times over the last two years. The 17-year-old has grown to love the Windy City, the birthplace of one of his favorite indie rock bands, Fall Out Boy. He plans to apply to a prestigious arts college there this fall. But the New Orleans teen and his family didn’t make these journeys for fun. Chicago was one of the only places where Kyle could continue to access testosterone, part of the gender-affirming care he needed to alleviate his intense feelings of gender dysphoria, after his home state of Louisiana’s ban on care went into effect in January 2024.
“I describe it as getting caught up with other boys my age,” Kyle told HuffPost about taking testosterone. He’s enjoyed hearing his voice deepen and watching his face become more square. Kyle considers himself lucky as one of the few trans kids in his community that is able to continue accessing care by traveling out of state. He was able to get a $500 grant from the Campaign for Southern Equality, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group, to make the trips more manageable. Without financial resources or family support, the vast majority of his trans friends are instead forced to wait until they’re adults to start the process of medically transitioning. HuffPost spoke with three families of transgender youth — all of whom requested to use pseudonyms or to use first names to protect their privacy — who shared stories underscoring the lengths to which they’ve gone and the distances they’ve traveled in order to access gender-affirming care for their children in the aftermath of a tidal wave of state-level bans on this care.
They may have to continue traveling farther and farther to continue care. Future access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth is now in the hands of the Supreme Court, which is set to issue a ruling this month to decide whether state-level bans on minors are a form of sex discrimination and violate the Constitution. Currently, more than a third of transgender youth age 13 to 17 live across the 26 states that have passed some form of a ban on gender-affirming care, according to a 2024 report from the Williams Institute. The case before the highest court, United States v. Skrmetti, involves Tennessee law SB 1, which bars the use of puberty blockers and hormone treatments for the purpose of gender transition and instead encourages minors to “appreciate their sex” assigned at birth.
The outcome in Skrmetti rests largely on what level of judicial scrutiny, or official skepticism, the justices require Tennessee’s law to be examined under. If the court rules that Tennessee has to apply heightened scrutiny — a more rigorous review given to laws around gender discrimination — the state is more likely to lose. In that case, the courts either could flat-out rule the law is unconstitutional, or more possibly, send the case back down to a lower court for reconsideration. If, however, the Court sides with Tennessee and allows for rational basis — a review typically reserved for economic regulations and not classifications of race, gender or national origin — this means that state’s ban would remain in effect. Experts worry that could make it more difficult for trans legal advocates to challenge other state bans on gender-affirming care for minors and adults. If the court sides with Tennessee, they say this could open up broader implications for other arenas of legal rights to privacy.
[...] “A loss in Skrmetti would give some wind in the sails of conservatives who are trying to chip away at Bostock,” Kreis said, referring to the landmark Supreme Court case which protected employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
In Project 2025, conservative advocates signaled their desire to restrict the application of the 2020 Supreme Court ruling in Bostock to advance transgender rights — and so far at least one conservative Texas judge, Matthew Kacsmaryk, has worked to minimize its impact.
[...] Over the last three years, the rising anti-trans legislation in state legislatures coupled with Trump’s slate of anti-trans executive orders has dramatically shifted the life decisions of trans youth, their families and even trans adults. Trump has wielded executive orders to threaten to pull federal funding from hospitals that serve LGBTQ+ youth, or schools that allow trans girls to play on female sports teams. Last month, House Republicans passed a massive domestic policy package that would include provisions to bar Medicaid and Affordable Care Act plans from covering gender-affirming care for trans youth and adults alike. The vast uncertainty of the state of transgender rights — as many legal challenges to state and federal actions make their way through the courts — has many families of LGBTQ+ people holding their breath for the Skrmetti decision. But the uncertainty could swing in multiple ways.
The impending United States v. Skrmetti decision at SCOTUS could further impact families of trans youths (and even trans adults), as it could impact access to gender-affirming care for trans youths.
