So...
The DetCo Episode One OVA...
I don't know where to start from to talk about it. Honestly, I really really liked it!
Like, even though I haven't read the first manga chapter, I'm pretty sure I figured out which scenes were additional material for kicks and giggles to give context to an audience that might be seeing the series for the first time, but also a nod or even fanservise for the long-time fans. Although, some of these cameos were a bit on the nose for me since I knew who the characters were and what role they play in the overall franchise.
I admit, I kinda teared up from hearing the very first opening in the beginning (and having scenes from that same opening during the ending was such a ridiculous nostalgia trip) and I have been going through the series only for a whole year now.
I mean, it was another OVA with almost a movie budget and animation quality like The Two Worst Days in History one. Ran's karate tournament fight was seriously INTENSE! The animators had a lot of fun with it, by the looks of it lol.
But man, I didn't wanna get depressed again over Ran's and Shinichi's relationship. This OVA hammered in the definition of tragic irony, considering I, the audience, knew what was coming after this date. It hurt seeing them pining for each other and being all cute together, only for the plot to happen 😭 I have to say though, it was a bit funny how Shinichi was the one who had the delusional fantasies this time around. They are such dorks *screams into a pillow*
Another thing I found interesting was how Shinichi's voice changed into Conan's voice in his thoughts after the police had taken him to the health center but before he truly saw his reflection in the mirror. Like yeah, the actors probably had to switch anyways, and the fact the original English dub had kept Shinichi's VA narrating Conan's thoughts is the one thing I find cool about that localized dub. But it's fascinating to consider that, in-universe, Shinichi had been hearing his childlike voice as Conan for several hours at least. Maybe that made his inner voice change as he got used to the idea he had shrunk, like some sort of subconscious acceptance of the situation. (another case of me focusing on the most random things it seems) 🤔
At this point, I still don't know how to feel about the BO scenes. Like you have them being all threatening, obviously dangerous and bloodthirsty and then there is that part with Korn and Chianti about the ferry's wheel lmao. Shiho was beautiful as always though, no contest 😊

Just watched the latest episode of bsd and seeing little yosano literally broke my freaking heart, so in honor to that I would like to ask for maybe a reader x fukuzawa where reader is like a mom figure and takes care of little yosano and ranpo? Like she is helping fukuzawa collect all those tiny ability users, but only if it's okay for you🫶🏽🥲
I just really enjoy ur writing ❤️

𝐀/𝐧: Fr that episode was so sad:(. I wanted to add something like comforting Yosano and Ranpo, but I don't know how to comfort someone. So, I decided to dump that idea of mine. Lol (I'm glad u enjoy my writing<33)
Tumblr media
Fukuzawa admires and respects his s/o's nurturing and caring nature towards Ranpo and Yosano, and often turns to them for advice on how to handle the two children.
His s/o often takes on the role of a mother figure, providing emotional support and guidance to Ranpo and Yosano as they navigate the dangerous world of ability users.
Fukuzawa is grateful for his s/o's presence in his life, recognizing that their influence has helped shape Ranpo and Yosano into the capable individuals they are today.
His s/o is patient and understanding, knowing how to handle Ranpo's eccentricities and Yosano's occasional outbursts.
Fukuzawa trusts his s/o implicitly, often delegating important tasks to them in regards to the collection and management of ability users.
Despite Fukuzawa's intimidating demeanor, his s/o is not afraid to challenge him when necessary, particularly when it comes to the safety and well-being of Ranpo and Yosano.
Fukuzawa appreciates his s/o's attention to detail and ability to anticipate potential dangers, knowing that they are always one step ahead in protecting the children.
His s/o has a calming effect on Fukuzawa, helping to mitigate his stern and uncompromising nature with their warmth and affection.
Together, Fukuzawa and his s/o make a formidable team, balancing each other's strengths and weaknesses to achieve their goals.
Though their relationship may be unconventional, Fukuzawa and his s/o share a deep respect and love for each other, bound by their dedication to Ranpo and Yosano.
𝐒𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨 :
It was another busy day at the Armed Detective Agency, and as usual, you were running around taking care of everyone. But today, you had two extra people to look after - little Yosano and Ranpo. They were both so young and innocent, and you couldn't help but feel a maternal instinct to protect them.
As you walked into the office, you saw Fukuzawa sitting at his desk, reading some documents. He looked up when he saw you and gave you a small smile.
"Good morning, my dear," he said, his voice low and calm.
"Good morning, love," you replied, walking over to him and giving him a kiss on the cheek.
You then turned your attention to Yosano and Ranpo, who were sitting at a table, working on some puzzles. You sat down next to them and watched them for a moment, admiring how smart they were for their age.
"Hey, guys," you said, smiling at them. "How's it going?"
"We're doing good," Yosano replied, looking up at you. "We finished all our work."
"Great job," you said, ruffling their hair. "Why don't we take a break and go get some snacks?"
Yosano and Ranpo both nodded eagerly, and you got up to lead them to the kitchen. As you walked, you couldn't help but feel a warm feeling in your heart. You loved taking care of these kids, and you were so grateful that Fukuzawa allowed you to be a part of their lives.
In the kitchen, you helped Yosano and Ranpo make some sandwiches and poured them each a glass of juice. As they ate, you sat with them and listened to them chatter about their day.
After a while, Fukuzawa walked in and sat down next to you. He watched the kids eat for a moment before turning to you and saying, "You're so good with them, my dear. I'm lucky to have you."
You blushed at his words, feeling grateful and loved. You looked back at Yosano and Ranpo, who were now giggling and chatting animatedly, and you knew that you were exactly where you were meant to be.

Why Gin never lets Vermouth drive?
Gin: I told you to drive my car, not fly my car!
Vermouth: It’s not my fault you can’t handle a little speed.
Gin: A little speed? My car was airborne. It’s the definition of flying.
From chapter 23 of Vineyard.
This is a reference to Vermouth's underrated driving skill.

Also, birds of a feather flock together. Here is Yukiko in an almost identical situation.
From Detective Conan Episode 335.
Both Vermouth and Yukiko utilize traffic signals to shirk their pursuers. Let's say there is a reason why they get along so well.

Dancing the Tandava (5/10)
[on Ao3] @today-in-fic
Long Island, NY 1993
They fly as far as a small airport in Islip, near the middle of Long Island, but still have to drive another hour and a half to reach Montauk.
Scully’s been quiet on the flight over, no doubt digesting the news from the phone call he received earlier in their office. He has to admit, the idea of the two of them one day having a son who’s visiting them from the future is a little far-fetched, but he’s heard the lore about Camp Hero and is eager to see it for himself.
“You were a Navy brat, Scully,” he says, breaking the silence. “Have you ever heard about the Philadelphia experiment?”
“I’ve heard about the cream cheese,” she says, absentmindedly gazing out the passenger window.
“Well,” he goes on, “in 1943 a Navy destroyer, the USS Eldridge, disappeared from a Philadelphia shipyard. It reappeared in Norfolk, Virginia, more than 200 miles away with no evidence of how it got there. The crew members weren’t as lucky—some were never found and others were discovered physically fused to the walls of the ship. It’s suspected that the Navy was testing out extraterrestrial technology, possibly stolen from the Nazis, that could make ships invisible to radar detection. Of course, the Navy maintains no such experiment was ever conducted, and no living crew members have any recollection of the event.”
“You think that has something to do with this case?” she asks.
“Apparently, the military continued experiments using this same technology at Camp Hero. I’ve heard stories of a foot of snow falling in the middle of a hot, August afternoon in Montauk, or residents experiencing episodes of mass mind control with dozens of unrelated people feeling sudden surges of anger or sadness simultaneously. Plus, there are reports of a time tunnel in Camp Hero that researchers have used to go forward or backward in time.”
Scully turns to face him. “And that’s where you think this guy came from?”
“I guess we’ll see.” Mulder shrugs, cracking a sunflower seed in his teeth. “Do you ever think about having children, Scully?” He chews hard, hoping the personal question hasn’t crossed a boundary.
“Well, sure,” she hesitates, staring at her hands in her lap. “But I’d like to be further along in my career and, well, with a significant other. What about you?”
“I don’t know,” he says. “In an ideal world, I think it would be nice to have a family, but I didn’t have a great childhood myself and I’m not sure I had the best parenting models. Besides, the instability of this job isn’t conducive to settling down. I think you’d be a great mom, though.”
Scully laughs.
“I’m serious, Scully. You’re patient, caring, and you’ve kept me out of trouble so far which is no easy feat.”
“I suppose being your partner is pretty good practice for parenting,” she says.
Her warm smile encourages him to test the limits even more. “I know we’ve only been working together for a few months, but I think we have a good rapport. I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that one day our friendship evolves into something more and that we have a child together.”
Scully doesn’t respond and he regrets his words. It’s a step too far. She probably doesn’t consider him as anything more than a coworker and, to be honest, he’s only now realizing he sees her as a friend. When she first walked into his office, she was a curiosity to him—a spy with the confidence to rewrite Einstein; the intestinal fortitude to dissect a corpse, handle its oozing organs, and walk away hungry for lunch; and constellations of freckles on her cheeks that she hides under makeup but that delight him whenever he catches a glimpse of them.
He tried to keep his guard up around her, but he’s slowly learning to trust her loyalty. At first, he didn’t expect her to last long on the X-Files but recently he’s been hoping she sticks around.
“Sorry,” he says after another beat of silence on her end. “I didn’t mean to imply or insinuate anything. I’m sure if you do have children one day it’ll be with some hotshot surgeon or the future head of the FBI, not your crackpot partner.”
“I assume there have been worse cases of Stockholm Syndrome,” she says, grinning at him.
“Stockholm Syndrome? Really, Scully?” He smiles back at her in relief that she’s playfully teasing him and isn’t totally repelled by his comments.
“I’m kidding,” she replies. “I enjoy working with you, Mulder. In just a few months I’ve seen things that have tested my beliefs in concepts I’ve considered to be invariables, and you’ve taught me the power of maintaining an open mind—even if our theories don’t always align. And sure, it’s not possible to say where we'll be a decade from now, but it’s also not possible to travel backwards in time. This is just someone playing a prank on us.”
He nods and turns his attention back to the road unfolding in front of them. As they get closer, the highway narrows to two lanes lined with bare trees. Finally, they turn off onto a dirt road, eventually reaching a tall, barbed wire fence with a guardpost outside. In the distance, he can see the radar tower from his file.
A uniformed officer leans out of the post to inspect their vehicle. “Can I help you?” he asks.
“Agents Mulder and Scully with the FBI,” Mulder says as he shows his badge. “We received a phone call that there’s a young man here asking to speak with us.”
“One moment,” he says.
As the guard goes back inside his post and picks up a phone, Mulder turns to Scully. “Doesn’t seem so decommissioned after all?” he asks with a smile.
Before she can respond, the guard turns his attention back to them. “They’re bringing him out now.”
“We can’t enter the base?” Mulder asks.
“No sir,” the guard says. “This area is restricted to authorized personnel only. The person who asked for you, we would have arrested him ourselves for trespassing if the bureau wasn’t taking care of it.”
Mulder doesn’t add that the FBI hasn’t sanctioned any of the day’s activity. He convinced Scully to claim they were responding to a missing person report when they requested their travel expenses, but they didn’t elaborate on where this person had gone missing from—or who he claimed to be.
“We can’t come in and take a look around?” Mulder presses. “We’ve been told this man has appeared under mysterious circumstances and it would assist with our investigation.”
The guard shakes his head gruffly. On the other side of the gate, another military officer approaches escorting a younger man in handcuffs. As they get closer, Mulder feels a shock of recognition. The handcuffed man could pass for him in his Oxford days. They share the same long, lean frame, bulbous nose, and angular jawline. He feels Scully turning toward him but he can’t take his eyes off this young man. Once they reach the gate, the guard enters the post and presses a button to open it just wide enough for the office and the young man to pass through. The military officer pushes the handcuffed man in front of him towards Mulder and Scully’s rental car.
“You want him cuffed?” he asks.
“Um, no,” Scully says absently, her mind working to process what she sees.
The young man is smiling at them now as if he recognizes them. In his eyes, Mulder sees Scully’s bright blue irises.
“Whatever,” the officer says. He unlocks the handcuffs and guides the young man into the backseat of the car. “Now you all need to get out of here. Authorized personnel only.”
“We’ve heard,” Mulder says, although he’s looking at the young man’s face in the rear view mirror and not at the officer. He’s cataloging his features, assigning some to Scully and some to himself. The resemblance is uncanny.
As Mulder turns the car around and starts pulling away their passenger exclaims, “This is crazy! You guys look so young!”
“I’m sorry,” Scully says. “Do we know you?”
“Mom, it’s me, it’s William,” he says, confused. “Oh shit, it’s 1993. I don’t exist yet. But listen, it’s me, William, your son. Mom, you’re a doctor, you have two brothers, Bill and Charlie, and had—have—a sister, Melissa. Your mom’s name is Maggie and your father’s name is Bill. Dad, you had a sister Samantha who went missing when you were a kid. Your parents are Teena and Bill. You two used to—well I guess, as of now, still do—work at the FBI investigating paranormal cases in the X-Files department.”
“This is all public information,” Scully says, although Mulder can hear the doubt creeping into her usually confident delivery. “You could have researched us. We don’t have a child together.”
“No, not yet you don’t,” he says. “I’m not surprised you don’t believe me. But I can prove it. You can do a DNA test, right? Wait, can you do a DNA test in 1993?”
“Yes, I can do that. And I’m confident that the results will prove that you’re lying.”
“Look, I have pictures of the three of us together on my phone. Shit, I don’t have my phone with me.”
“You have pictures on a phone?” Scully asks doubtfully.
William falls quiet in the backseat. Mulder catches his sad eyes in the mirror.
“Let’s go somewhere we can talk and figure this out,” Mulder says.
Back on the highway, they find a chrome-sided diner. Mulder and Scully secure a booth while William excuses himself to use the bathroom.
Mulder can only sit and grin dumbfoundedly at Scully.
“What?” Scully asks, exacerbated.
“You see it, don’t you?” He asks. “You have to admit the resemblance is undeniable.”
“It’s the power of suggestion,” she counters angrily. “We were told he was our son, so we’re looking for similarities. If anything, this could be a setup. Maybe someone found this guy, who looks a little bit like both of us, and is using him to lure us into something.”
“That doesn’t add up. They’d have to be assuming we would believe in this whole time travel angle as well.”
“Mulder,” she sighs. “You do believe William, or whoever he is, traveled back in time.”
“I’m not ready to rule it out,” he replies. “You’ll do the DNA test. That’ll give us some answers. Let’s hear what he has to say in the meantime.”
From across the diner Mulder sees William emerging from the restroom. “Your parents are right down at that end, hun,” a waitress tells him, pointing in their general direction.
Mulder glances at Scully and she rolls her eyes.
William slides into the booth across from them, still smiling wide, with Scully’s blue eyes lit up on his face.
“I can’t believe this,” he says with excitement in this voice. “You guys used to tell me about going to all these random diners while you were on the road for cases and now I’m getting to see it myself. How long have you two been working together now? Did you find Tooms yet? That was one of your first cases, right?”
“Slow down,” Scully says. “We need you to tell us who you are and where you came from.”
William laughs. “I feel like I should be the one asking you two that,” he says playfully.
“Give us the benefit of the doubt here, William,” Mulder says.
“Okay, well, where do I start? I’m your son, William Scully Mulder, I was born on May 20, 2001. I’m currently a research intern at CERN in Geneva. You two were actually supposed to come visit me today—well, 2023 today. I was assisting this physicist with an experiment on the large hadron collider when all of a sudden things got hazy and I came to in some sort of tunnel at that military base you picked me up from.”
“The large what?” Mulder asks.
“The large hadron collider,” Scully answers. “It’s a particle accelerator but it doesn’t exist. International scientists have proposed plans for its development, but right now the only particle accelerator at CERN is the large electron–positron collider.”
“Yeah,” William nods. “But the LEP was dismantled like 20 years ago to make room for the LHC, which is magnitudes more powerful. Mom, you’ll love this. They discovered the Higgs boson in 2012.”
He’s interrupted by the waitress who comes to take their order.
Scully starts to speak but William reaches out his hand to stop her.
“Watch,” he says. “I know what you want. Mom, you probably think the crispy chicken sandwich sounds good but you’ll order the Greek salad, no feta cheese, with dressing on the side. Dad, you’re going to get the Reuben with fries. And two black coffees.”
Mulder turns to glance at Scully, befuddled.
“Sounds like your kid’s got you down pat,” the waitress says. “And what about you, young man?”
“Um, I’ll have the crispy chicken sandwich—you can have a bite, mom—and an iced tea.”
As the waitress walks away, William asks, “Do you believe me now? Dad, you probably have a bag of sunflower seeds in your pocket that you’ll snack on before the food comes.”
Mulder laughs, pulling out an opened bag of seeds. William reaches over and takes one, opening the shell with his teeth, mirroring the movement Mulder knows he does himself.
“Well, before we eat, I’d like to take a sample of your saliva for a DNA test,” says Scully. “You can take a lucky guess on our lunch orders but genetics don’t lie.”
As she opens her briefcase to get testing swabs and evidence bags, Mulder sees a look of resigned disappointment flash across William’s face. It’s as if he’s sad Scully won’t believe him, but also not surprised.
“May I?” Scully asks, pointing an elongated Q-tip in William’s direction. “Just a cheek swab.”
He nods and opens his mouth, letting Scully get a sample of his saliva and zip it into an evidence bag. She does the same for Mulder, and then herself, before packing all three plastic bags into her briefcase.
“I can drop these off at the nearest field office and have them start sequencing the DNA.”
“Why don’t you tell us how you think you got here,” Mulder says.
“I told you,” William starts impatiently. “I was working on the collider with Dr. Bellona—wait, shit, it must have been Dr. Bellona.”
Mulder and Scully stare at him in confusion.
“He’s a physicist at CERN,” William continues. “His office is next door to Dr. Farber who I actually work for, but he called me in last night to assist on a project. That’s kind of weird, for an intern to work directly on the LHC, but it’s not even the weirdest part. Dad, you’re going to love this.”
Mulder leans in across the table. He can’t help but feel drawn to William’s energy.
“When I was coming back from work yesterday it was just getting dark and I saw Dr. Bellona outside this statue near my apartment. It’s a big statue of the Hindu god Shiva. And Bellona wasn’t alone. He was with about a dozen other people and leading them in a chant. I couldn’t make out any of the words but I also saw he was scattering something on the ground as he chanted. And I kind of stopped to look because it seemed so odd, and then Bellona saw me and he gave me this ice-cold stare. It was kind of creepy, actually. Then, just a couple of hours later, he calls me in to assist on an LHC run. That’s strange, right?”
Mulder looks over at Scully, her brow furrowed as she tries to make sense of the story.
“Did you tell anyone what you saw?” Mulder asks.
“Just Hannah, but she wouldn’t tell anyone.”
“Who’s Hannah?” Scully asks.
William’s about to answer when the waitress comes and sets their plates down in front of them. He waits for her to walk away to continue.
“She’s, um, my friend, and my roommate. We went to MIT together and we both got internships at CERN. She’s the best. You guys met her last summer, and you really liked her. And like I said, she didn’t tell anyone about the Bellona thing. We were together the whole time in between me seeing him and when he called.”
“So you suspect this Dr. Bellona caught you witnessing something you weren’t supposed to see and then, to keep you quiet, sent you back in time?” Scully asks hesitantly.
“It’s possible,” he says.
“It’s really not,” Scully responds wearily.
WIlliam shrugs and takes a sip of his iced tea. “I know it sounds crazy, but dad, back me up here. You must’ve heard about something like this happening before. Maybe in one of your cases?”
“Physicists have theorized about wormholes and time loops—” Mulder starts.
“Yeah, of course, like Stephen Hawking,” William interrupts. “He said the possibility of time travel was more likely than the existence of God. And mom, didn’t you even write about it in your senior thesis?”
Mulder smiles and turns toward Scully. “That’s what I said, mom,” he says.
“Well, as I explained to Agent Mulder, time travel is only a theory, and even if it were somehow possible, the human body wouldn’t be able to withstand the extreme forces and temperatures that would be required to create a transversable wormhole and manipulate space-time.”
“And yet, here I am.”
Mulder makes eye contact with William from across the table. William flashes a smirk at him that, if it didn’t come from a face with Scully’s eyes, could be like looking in a mirror.
“How old is this Dr. Bellona?” he asks William.
“I don’t know,” he says in between bites of his sandwich. “Probably around your age, 60-something.”
Scully stifles a laugh.
“Well,” says Mulder. “Then he must be around our age now, too. Maybe we can track him down and see if he plans on creating a time machine thirty years from now. Any idea where he might be in 1993?”
“I don’t know,” William says. “He’s American, which narrows it down a little. I know that’s not much, but it’s not all that common at CERN so at least we’ll be sticking within your jurisdiction.”
He holds out his half-eaten sandwich to Scully. “It’s really good, mom. You sure you don’t want a bite?”
Mulder watches as she squints at William, then slowly reaches out to take the sandwich. He winks at William who smiles back.

I was watching the movie that expands on the first episode called the Great detective turned small like the case at the very beginning and why Gin and Vodka were there. We even have scenes for Amuro, Chianti and Korn and Kir gets a little cameo as a reporter who talks about Shinichi in the beginning of the first episode
But anyways back to my point. I love this movie because for a second, idk if I'm just overanalyzing, it looked like Shinichi actually teared up, overwhelmed by all the shit that happened to him all at once and that has to be my favourite thing ever cause he rarely ever cries or shows emotion beyond anger, desperation or just being a snarky bitch. Obviously he's happy and stuff but I mean emotion as in him genuinely being overwhelmed because I promise you I would've been having a whole breakdown after all the shit he went through in like a few hours.
Like he saw someone get decapitated (Idc what he said, he might have been desensitized to murders but that's sure as hell gonna stick in his head, the blood literally squirted all over him and Ran) then he solved the case, comforted Ran, ran after the suspicious dude he saw before, saw do a whole blackmail deal while talking about some shady organization, got hit on the head hard enough that it effected his memory and he was barely aware of what was going on, got fed a drug, felt like he was burning alive, thought he was going to die, woke up as a little kid and no one is believing a single thing he's saying, almost got sent to a child care center which is a little disaster in Japan search it up, got chased by the police like a criminal with huge as dogs as well, couldn't call Ran because he knew she wouldn't believe him as well, ran home in the rain, and then almost got run over by a truck.
Like. Dude needs so much therapy for that single night, not to mention all the other shit that happens and the truck load of trauma he's going to be faced with for next year or however long canon has been. Yeah, that's crazy.

It's 'Fur' week for episode 6 of the @havenfanrewatch
Tumblr media
My thoughts as I was watching;
Love the spookiness of the opening scene.
Eleanor writing on Audrey’s windscreen is just *chef's kiss* perfect.
Love Audrey showing off her gun skills, a nice little reminder that she's not just a small town detective, but also am FBI agent.
It's such a shame we never get to see Jess and Duke on screen together. I really think they would get on.
It's a nice touch having someone in the Chief's office fixing a crack in the wall; keeping that plot line going without saying anything.
Jess is fabulous; that “why do people think that you're a witch?” and her, “Maybe because they don't like the way I think.” is great. As is her “What do you think the Troubles are?” I love the way she says it.
And Audrey and Nathan's differing reactions to Jess are really nicely done. The look on Audrey's face XD
Garland is a little perplexing in this episode. I know his friends are dead and I know he's stressed in general (as we see from the nicorette gum), but he seems to suddenly go from expecting Nathan to come up with a logical explanation to being frustrated that he isn't treating it as a Trouble. Maybe a symptom of the writers still working out some of the background/backstory details?
I think this is the only episode where I really notice the limitations of the special effects (the moose and the bear in particular), but it works because the actors do such a good job of selling it, particularly Vince & Dave.
I love the way Nathan takes what Jess said to him, and turns it around to help Landon, and how similar-but-different their two Troubles are.
This has to be one of the most bizarre Troubles there is. Particularly when you consider what Audrey says at the end; “Piper was stuffed; it must have been going on for generations.” How does that work between the Troubles?
I wouldn't say this is my favourite episode (and I do miss Duke here), but it has some great moments; mostly related to Nathan, though I like Eleanor here too. Her conversation with Audrey at the end about helping her find out about her mom is really sweet. I love her philosophy: “You do what you can. And the world goes on.” And her comment to Audrey about “You're not a summer person any more” makes me think her definition of ‘summer person’ is related to knowledge of the Troubles/Haven's secrets and that's kind of nice too.

"If this doesn't get better fast," You mutter just over your breath. "I'm going to end up punching someone."
There's not enough volume to your statement for Detective Novak to overhear, but it slips out just loud enough that Scott perks up and turns his gaze towards you as he walks by you on his way down the hallway. You barely succeed in covering the dark look you were about to throw the Czech officer.
He raises his eyebrows, "Do I need to send you out on a walk too?" His hand points in the direction Vo just went out of the local precinct, following his orders to cool off.
You can't help it. It's not as if you can shut your feelings off and just be analytical about this. Cameron may be running point on this case because of her own experience in helping assault survivors and her newly, and rightly earned, seniority on the Fly Team, but you have just as much stake in this developing case as her. There's a reason Scott made sure you were here with him and Vo and not with Raines or Garretson.
Detective Novak chooses to make her exit silently as she passes around you and Scott.
You breathe out a heavy exhale and hold his gaze for a moment, "No."
You lean back for support as cross your arms and bend one of your legs to put your foot against the wall and stare at the green paint across from you. Disassociating is better than letting tears cloud your vision. Anything is better than getting sucked into that black hole again.
Scott steps into your space instead of retreating, forcing you to place your foot on the ground and straighten your posture. He takes another step forward until there is very little space between the two of you.
"I know that you lead with your heart," His voice is just barely over a whisper and brushing against your cheeks. His focus on you is intense and all-consuming. "But right now, I need your head in this too."
"There's a reason I never completed my J.D.," You begin. His gaze doesn't waver. Scott is dialed in on you. You remember what your mother used to say to you as a girl, Still waters run deep, darling. You haven't even begun to reach the bottom of him yet. "I went with law enforcement because I know how easy it is for a girl like Ali to get lost in the red tape. I'm less frustrated with the fact that rape and assault laws are criminally behind here and more frustrated with the fact that I come from a country that doesn't hold the moral high ground. Change a few details and circumstances, and we're in the States on the same 'ole merry-go-round with the same kind of ending."
You take a breath. There's a moment of silence as Scott looks at you, somehow knowing that you aren't finished.
"And as much as you empathize, as much as you apply your knowledge from working cases like these for years, you will never 100% understand what it will mean for Ali when you go in there and tell her that her only two options are to either be arraigned for assault and kicked out of a country before she receives the justice she is owed or take down a social media post that is her only viable option for recourse right now."
You squeeze your eyes shut and bring your palms against your face for a moment. You feel Scott lean in. You push the tears back, but they linger just slightly.
When you open your eyes, his face is just centimeters away, "I get that this is our only move right now, but we're supposed to be pushing for better options now. We're supposed to be breaking ground, not just calling out the breaks in the pavement and watching someone else trip over them."
One of Scott's hands lightly brushes over your hair, trailing around your ear and then landing on your shoulder for a second. "I know."
He reaches down to squeeze your hand, "I know."
You breathe the same air for a solitary moment before you both know you need to move onto your responsibilities.
"I'll call Andre and Megan and update them." You nod at him, moving to step away, but he holds you against him for one heartbeat, two. Your breath catches.
"We'll talk next steps after I discuss with Ali."
"Okay."
"Okay," Scott says. His thumb brushes against the fabric of your trousers resting on your waist before he steps back and makes his way down the hallway to Ali's cell.
You give yourself a moment to breathe.

I just remembered, I had one more thing to say about the DetCo Episode One OVA.
Do you think the Tropical Land guards ever filed a missing person's report for the weird elementary kid they found that day?
Like it's established that Conan has no official documents proving his existence anywhere. But it's a bit bizarre to me that no one bothered to search for him after he disappeared from Tropical Land. Shouldn't the fact an unidentified child appeared at the place where they supposedly killed Kudou Shinichi had tipped off the BO somehow? 🤔

Gathering of the Greatest Gumshoes - Number 31
Welcome to A Gathering of the Greatest Gumshoes! During this month-long event, I’ll be counting my Top 31 Favorite Fictional Detectives, from movies, television, literature, video games, and more!
Today, the countdown begins in earnest!
SLEUTH-OF-THE-DAY’S QUOTE: “Be careful, Brain! Those are probably priceless fake artifacts!”
Number 31 is…Inspector Gadget.
Tumblr media
Not every detective on this countdown has to be a GOOD detective. They just have to conform to the rules and regulations I established, and…well…be a detective, in general. While most of the sleuths on this countdown WILL be relatively serious characters – which is to say, they’ll actually be good at their jobs, no matter how silly they at first appear – there are a couple that will fall into the “Bungling Detective” trope. These are comical, parodical characters who are decidedly NOT good at their jobs. Most of them are, weirdly enough, given the title of “Inspector,” which really makes you wonder how terrible the law enforcement offices in these universes must be.
Out of all the bumblers and baboons who wear an inspector’s badge, I think many would agree with me that Inspector Gadget is quite possibly the single most dunderheaded lout of the entire bunch. In terms of sheer ability, Gadget is arguably the single worst detective of all time. This character is SUCH a goofy loser, that I actually had a couple of people outright telling me, when I told them about this concept, that he shouldn’t be included. HE’S. THAT. BAD. So why IS he on the list, after all? Well…like I said, competency isn’t really an issue here, and I do have a big nostalgic soft spot for the (not so) good Inspector, so he gets a pass at the end of the day.
For those who don’t know, “Inspector Gadget” was a 1980s cartoon series, which focused on the adventures of its titular character: a clumsy and dimwitted cyborg, who was part of an elite group of law enforcement agents. The organization’s goal is to take down a mysterious mad scientist, Dr. Claw: the leader of an evil gang of international felons known as M.A.D. Gadget would be sent out on missions to defeat Claw and his minions…and he would always louse it up, because Gadget is a complete moron. This was the great, humorous conceit of the series: Gadget is a bionically enhanced living superweapon, with all kinds of gizmos at his disposal…but the combination of him having two left feet and only half of a brain cell ultimately renders all that power thoroughly worthless. He’s too busy tripping over his own “Go-Go Gadget Oil Slick!” to have any HOPE of catching the perpetrators or solving any mystery thrust before him.
Ironically, it’s Gadget’s sidekicks who end up being the REAL saviors of every episode. One was the Inspector’s own niece: a precocious and cheerful young girl named Penny. While she loves and looks up to her uncle, Penny is actually a MUCH better detective than he is with far less high-tech gear (and a significant age gap). It’s usually she who ends up TRULY figuring out the case and finding a way to stop Claw and his cronies. Brain, meanwhile, was their talking, bipedal pet dog (don’t question it, I’m not going to). While Penny was cracking the case, this poor mutt spent most of his time making sure that Gadget didn’t get himself killed, with much slapstick buffoonery happening as a result.
While everyone pretty universally agrees that Inspector Gadget, himself, is a complete and total clod, the show and the character turned out to be extremely popular. The series not only sold a boatload of merchandise, but gave way to a Christmas special, two (terrible) live-action films, and even a recent Netflix reboot (which I haven’t seen). He may not have been a truly great gumshoe in the sense of…well…actually being a great gumshoe, but as one of the most wonderfully silly sleuths to ever sweep across the small screen, Inspector Gadget has definitely made his mark. “Go-Go Gadget Legacy!”
Tomorrow, the countdown continues with Number 30!
CLUE: “Your vast corrupt future is draining away as we speak.”
