I’m so thankful that @lemonade-squid alerted me that the cast of ESPer Mami (エスパー魔美) appears in the new Doraemon (ドラえもん) video game, Doraemon Dorayaki Shop Story (ドラえもんのどら焼き屋さん物語). It turned out to be available on Nintendo’s Switch, which I happen to have, so I’ve been playing it all weekend and having a lot of fun. It’s a work simulation game but it kind of reminds me of computer games from my childhood like SimCity 2000 or SimTower.

Looking into a few other Fujiko F. Fujio works before I return to Doraemon: Esper Mami (1977–1983). This one is unconventional in that the main character, Mami, is a girl (a distinction shared with Chimpui) and is in middle school (instead of elementary school). Following the usual mold of Fujiko F. Fujio protagonists, she is well-meaning, but not particularly skilled at most tasks (though with the exception of her hazardous cooking, her incompetence is not as exaggerated as it tends to be with Fujio’s grade-school-aged leads).

Mami discovers one day that she has psychic powers inherited from her French witch ancestors: mainly telekinesis, teleportation, and limited telepathy. She can also sense people in distress within a certain distance, so most of the series revolves around her responding to these distress signals and helping others in need. (One of the strangest things in this manga, honestly, is the fact that even though the signals are nearly impossible for her to ignore, we almost never see her called away in the middle of school from what I recall. I guess incidents rarely happen during school hours.)

Other than her unusually intelligent dog, Mami’s main associate is her close friend Takahata, who has an eidetic memory and often uses his knowledge to help her master her abilities and solve cases. The relationship between the two is charming and believable, and in a story like this it’s refreshing to see a friendship between a boy and a girl that isn’t founded primarily on romantic attraction on one side or another. (There’s still a little of that, but it’s not a major component of the narrative.)

Mami’s supernatural powers aside, the story premises in this series tend to be pretty down-to-earth, mostly centering around scenarios that could happen in real life. They also get somewhat emotionally heavier than typical Fujiko F. Fujio works, with a few chapters ending on an unexpectedly somber note.

That being said, the atmosphere ultimately stays lighthearted and optimistic for the most part. As usual for Fujiko F. Fujio, humor features heavily in Esper Mami. There are some creative applications of Mami’s powers: a particularly funny one is that when she is too frightened to visit the bathroom at night after listening to ghost stories, she teleports her own urine into her friend’s bladder and makes her want to go instead!

This one panel made me laugh quite hard. When Mami is bored at home and all her friends are off doing other things, she starts narrating herself roleplaying as a lion (casting her dog as another animal that she’s fighting).

(I definitely spent too much time playing similar games when I was little.)

As a fun Easter egg, the main cast of Doraemon have a conspicuous cameo in one Esper Mami story (though surprisingly, I don’t think there’s ever been a proper crossover between the two).

Speaking of Doraemon, in the Esper Mami anime adaptation, Mami has the same voice actor as Dorami (from the 1979 Doraemon anime series). They do indeed sound essentially the same, which I find very amusing.

Esper Mami is funny, the character dynamics are engaging, and the story strikes the balance of “slight fantasy in an otherwise realistic setting while still maintaining an optimistic tone” that appeals to me. If that were all there was to it, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the series to just about anyone... but then we come to the elephant in the room...

A very bizarre and unpleasant recurring element of the story is that Mami poses as a nude model for her artist father in exchange for pocket money. To be clear, this is never presented as suggestive in the context of the plot, but it also doesn’t exactly add anything essential to the narrative, and from a Doylist perspective it’s frankly difficult to fathom any non-creepy reason why it needs to be present in the first place. 😬

Truth be told, I think these scenes do a disservice to the work if anything. Esper Mami contains so much more that is worth discussing, but it is almost impossible to talk about the series without addressing this uncomfortable component. With it taking over the conversation among some potential audiences and putting off others, appreciating the other elements of the series for what they are can be a challenge.

she looked dumbfounded “ say it louder miles morales” she only says that when shes mad, this isn’t good

Shigeo introduced Kuriko as his friend and college + appartment roomate back at Canada

Reigen said something about Shigeo talking about Kurkio a few times in chat and facetime

They were happy that Shigeo has a friend to take care of him

They went outside to hangout to catch up about things then bumped into the ex-Awekening Lab members along with

Teruki latched himself onto Shigeo like a parasite that even Ritsu couldn't get him off.

And oh, would you look at that, Kuriko isn't ignored this time!

Ritsu recognized and called out to Kuriko when he was trying to get Teruki off his brother

Teruki finally let go when Shigeo introduced Kuriko

Teruki just wanted to tease him by jokingly saying if Kuriko is his girlfriend (he doesn't know why but it pains him to say that)

Kuriko and Shigeo grimanced at this. They looked at eachother, then back to the rest

Kuriko is an Aroace Sapphic while Shigeo is an Aroace Pansexual

So it feels pretty wrong because Shigeo knew that Kuriko isn't into him and about the fact that she's into girls more

Teruki apologized for the joke but couldn't help but feel a strange feeling of relief and satisfaction

They hangout for a while at the park and were awestruck about Shigeo's and Kuriko's dynamic

Shigeo looks like he enjoys Kuriko's company, the same thing goes to Kuriko. Shigeo may smile a lot, but his smile is normally small. But right now, Shigeo's smile is a lot more bigger than how they remembered. Heck he's even laughing and he doesn't laugh a lot.

The scene is enough for them to believe that Shigeo is in good hands. They knew that Kuriko wouldn't do anything bad to Shigeo and vice versa.

Shigeo and Kuriko stayed overnight at the Kageyama household and went back the park the next day

This time, they bumped into the Body Improvement club

Just by taking one look at the Body Improvement club and you can already tell that they aren't the emotional type

Except that's all lies

The club literally sobbed. They sobbed harder than the whole theater watchers when they were watching Titanic.

They hangout and you know the drill

Shigeo and Kuriko needed to go back to Canada

They intended to stay a bit longer but an emergency came so they had to go back to Canada

The argument of Puella Magi Madoka Magica being "everyone's first Tragical Girl" is garbage, and here's why (and no, I'm not talking about UtaKata, nor Lyrical Nanoha):

The most simple way to describe a magical girl would be "a girl who has powers", and that basically could mean almost anything, even if they don't come in the conventional means of meeting magic familiars, or by birthright.

In the Magical Girl wiki, one of the many series you can find on the list is ESPer Mami, an obscure series from Fujiko F. Fujio (mostly known for creating Doraemon), featuring a young girl named Sakura Mami, as she develops telekinetic powers.

By categorizing ESPer Mami as a magical girl, that could also mean that series like the MOTHER/EarthBound trilogy, Psychonauts, and Mob Psycho 100 are Magical Boy series (because magical boys are scarce nowadays, and people need to find protagonists that aren't dirty pigs like H*rry P*tter).

These three ESPer-centric series have dealt with plenty of serious themes, mostly of them being about psychology and human nature.

Returning to ESPer Mami, I've watched this series, and it's pretty chill most of the time. It has its fair share of seriousness, but nothing too shocking. However, the scene that stood out to me was the one where Mami learns about the Witch Hunts, and decides to keep her telekinetic powers a secret from her parents, in fear of what could happen to her.

I feel this is one of the very few Magical Girl series that have touched upon some piece of real life history, such as the Witch Hunts.

Of course, to some people, the idea of women having powers is blasphemous, so it's understandable why some heroines keep their special gifts hidden from the public. And speaking of blasphemous, here's another ESPer-centric series for you: Carrie, by Stephen King.

To put it simply, it's a story about how bullying and religious trauma can result into horrible consequences, if the victim in question has telekinetic powers and can retaliate at any moment. Basically an anti-bullying propaganda cleverly disguised as an horror movie (with Matilda being considered its Lighter and Softer version).

Carrie had many different incarnations and many different endings: Death (and implied return/ressurrection), reincarnation, running away from town, etc.; but the main plot and its iconic ball massacre scene still remain.

It's got lots of despair and catharsis to spare (hey, that rhymed!), not to mention the violence that much like its spiritual successors, makes Madoka Magica quite tame in comparison.

Anyways, what I am trying to say here, is that Carrie White was the first Tragical Girl ever, and I'm tired of people pretending that she doesn't count.

Having familiarized myself with more of Fujiko F. Fujio‘s works, here’s something about Doraemon I’ve realized that I’d been taking for granted: how important Nobita’s classmates are as characters. I suspect that this is easy to overlook in part because having a group of classmates as the main cast is very common in stories with child protagonists, and at a cursory glance, most of Fujio’s manga (including Doraemon) consistently include a set of classmate characters who fit a recurring set of archetypes:

The “love interest” classmate

The “bully” classmate

The “bully’s lackey” classmate

Sometimes, there’s also a “rich kid” classmate (in Doraemon, Suneo combines the last two categories)

However, Doraemon seems to be unusual in that these classmates double as the protagonist’s main social group (alongside his robot chaperone). To compare:

In Perman, the protagonist mainly interacts with other superheroes and his robot copy

In Kiteretsu Daihyakka, the protagonist spends much of his time alone—his robot assistant might interact more with his classmates than he does

In Bakeru-kun, the protagonist interacts with his classmates as his alter egos at least as often as he does as himself... and a lot of the time he effectively becomes his own social group by adopting multiple alter egos at once

Esper Mami already deviates in that the usual roster of classmate archetypes is largely absent, but in any case, the protagonist’s main associates consist of her dog and just one classmate who is her best friend

In Chimpui, the protagonist mainly hangs out with her alien chaperone and one classmate who is her best friend

In this way, most or all of the recurring classmates in these series are generally relegated to supporting roles, and sometimes may not even appear all that frequently. In Doraemon though, the main group of classmates is also Nobita’s usual friend group, which essentially requires them to be written with more depth than their counterparts in Fujio’s other manga often are. I may have my complaints about how the Doraemon franchise tends to handle Shizuka’s characterization, but she is still more multifaceted than most of the classmate characters in the other manga listed above, especially those in a comparable “love interest” role.

Combined with the fact that there are very few major supporting characters in the series, and that makes the main cast of Doraemon feel like a very tight-knit group, despite how dysfunctional they can often be. (It most likely won’t ever happen, but I’d love to see Cinema Therapy break down the friendship dynamics in Doraemon...)

Without a doubt, the longevity and marketing of the Doraemon franchise has had a major hand in making its main cast the cultural icons that they are. It wouldn’t surprise me, however, if this element of the series has played an important role as well.

nuestro amor es como una enfermedad que no se cura , se que esto es una locura ,hablan de las ataduras , dicen que el amor real siempre perdura y aunque se que estoy segura y no me caben duda , siento que me elevo y voy, siempre sigo siendo la que soy, voy dejando huella donde piso , aunque me ponga calipso porque siempre se por donde cruzo y aunque el destino o dios a si lo quiso espero que salen las heridas que el viento te hizo a mami le pido perdón a ti te entrego mi corazón si es verdad que es amor y la verdad lo siento perdoname pero lo lamento no se que es el sentimiento amar a quien solo te da tormento eso no es lo que yo quiero …

quisiera expresar y volverte a encontrar , sacar la amargura y tirarla a la basura ; se que el amor y ternura que el expresó con locura y quizas asi mi vida se desnuda , porque yo si te queria con locura , el tiempo dice que el alma llena de dulzura aunque sabes que soy solo tuya, las palabras son oscuras ,pero se que hay un dios arriba que me mira y con ojos rojos y aguados viene el deseo de ser querida , yo que tanto espere que me dijeras que mis labios tocaban la luna y que mi voz era dulce como ninguna , mi enfermedad de dolor y agustia crecio y mi vida se termino , siendo el motor de mi desvanecimiento y sufrimiento , hoy te dejo mi tormento para que asi seas la oscura calle donde ninguna queria caminar , el dia donde la noche no queria alumbrar a la luna , con gran ternura , mi vida se terminara y algo nuevo comenzara mi corazon ya no te molestará mas y la historia continuara…
