the discussion surrounding generative images costing artists their jobs and being trained on stolen work is extremely important and worth having, but the reason i'm so zealous about pointing them out when i see them (and helping people learn to recognize them) is, once again, consumer and media literacy. ai generators have their arguable uses as tools for inspiration, but they are also tools for manipulation.

generative images, unlike a good photoshop, can be produced instantly with absolutely no skill required, which means that everything from online shopping to political propaganda is now inundated with convincing fakes. this could easily be you!

when doing your shopping this season, please pay close attention to products from unfamiliar sources like etsy shops.

does the product show multiple angles? (this is the most important thing for which you should look)

does the product have a lot of superfine details, yet no zoom on them?

do those details actually connect and make sense as shapes?

are things that should be symmetrical, such as chair legs or lamp bases, actually symmetrical?

does the light source make sense? (like this lamp example: why is the base not illuminated if the lamp is lit?)

if purchasing a print from an etsy (etc.) shop, is the style consistent or does the "artist" somehow seem to be an expert in every style and medium? (like, beware of shops like this one-- even without zooming and investigating, the inconsistent style is quite a red flag)

can you find an "original" of the image, like on an artist's social media, or does it seem to only exist in the context of the shop?

do the elements and details of the image easily distinguish themselves, or do parts of them merge weirdly together? (to use an example from the previously linked shop, check out the bottom of the coat on this image and how it fuses with the clothing beneath-- this is only the most immediate and obvious issue in the image)

can you expand more on what you mean by "mythical self-started indie artist business"? do you mean it is mythically "self-started" because people are relying on shady print-on-demand companies, or something further? thank you

There is a mythology around the independent artist who runs a Etsy shop with a patreon and a Ko-Fi that constantly prevents most tumblr users from ever breaking out of that "protect small businesses" mentality, which inexplicably is also not that scarcely linked to the punk subculture. defense of intellectual property is usually drawn from this, as well as forming part of the rhetorical repertoire of the self styled expert-in-revolutions liberal, who's very concerned about the ignorant rabble/communists, in their moralist violent revenge, being unable to distinguish between the Big Forbes Capitalist and poor little corner store jakey who has never done anything wrong.

Despite most artists being either workers who do art when they can, or what we'd classify as artisans, people who own their own means of production and don't employ anyone (hence living off of their own labor), the petit-bourgeois aspirations of a few artists are what's prevalent or more visible on tumblr, becoming the rallying cry of either the type of liberal whose idea of communism is a Huey Long-esque "everyone a small business owner", or the type of liberal whose idea of a revolution is a mix between the Les Miserables musical and Rogue One, meaning everyone dies.

This is quite a silly example, but I think the reaction's to @catgirlstalin's (very silly) poll about jobs in a socialist state were still indicative of this IMO. so many people got mad "artist" wasn't mentioned explicitly and was instead relegated to the "something else" option. Some people got weirdly aggressive over this, and I think it's because artists are extremely coddled here and given disproportionate importance. A few even got to say that art is the meaning of society as a whole. Anyway I'm ranting now, hope this answered your question!

Unethical fur farms, Yarn tails and Faux fur

It's a little alarming that people may not know about cruelty fur farms and unethical fur tails, so I'll put my little guide on how I usually spot them. I'll also have a little section comparing faux fur, yarn tails and real tails.

How to spot Unethically sourced fur

Everything I know is by my experience, as well as research I have done via youtube videos. Thorn from Therian Territiory has an excellent video talking about the subject, (Click Here) But I will summerise below if you want to get straight to the point.

A key feature I find when it comes to unethical tails is this goddamn golden keychain

I have 4 tails with this keychain and all of them are of varying quality - however I don't doubt they are from unethical fur farms.

Another key detail is The tail is thin, the fur brittle and the leather has not been scraped correctly, meaning there is fat from the animal it once came from. Have you ever bought a tail, looking at the leather within and there has been yellow patches? That is animal fat that should have been scraped away.

I avoid buying from Chinese or Korean sellers as that is usually where unethical fur comes from, there are very little rights to animals within these countries, so there is no guarantee the animal had a good life before being killed. As stated earlier, Thorn goes into detail on this subject, although I must warn you the contents He speaks about are quite upsetting.

I would also avoid buying from Amazon, temu, wish, shein and Ebay, as the tails bought from these sites are usually of questionable Quality.

So, where can I buy ethical fur from...?

I highly recommend Etsy, Always check the reviews from sellers - check how thin the tail is and check for that pesky key chain. As a personal caution, beware of cheap tails as there is a good chance they are drop shipped from unethical fur farms, I'd bought a cheap tail from a sale here in Australia (With the golden keychain) and the tail was sadly not great Quality...So always check for that keychain. I hear people can buy tails from Renfaires, oddity and taxidermy markets.

Authentic fur vs Yarn tails vs Faux Fur

I've seen there's quite a debate on which is the best to buy and best for the enviroment. I'm sure all of you have your reasons for swinging this way or that way, so I'll just list some pros and cons
