Bad person (pt.2)
(Long post)
I can’t talk to others,
I can't understand myself.
I can't understand others,
I can't talk to myself.
Who are they?
Do they even know?
Am I the same as them?
We aren't and are but I can't figure it out.
What makes you you and why cant you be me?
What separates us?
Language and understanding,
Are we the different words but both meaning the same to each,
We think are different,
Because of our experiences?
Come into my brain and tell me your name
The way you hear it,
I’ll whisper it back without gagging.
Come be me
And I’ll be you.
The closest we ever could be.
It will be true empathy.
Let me know your name.
Let me have your hands,
I want to do the same you can.
Lend me your ears,
I wanna hear the music you like.
Why do you run,
I always ran,
My mouth was always shut and you
Wouldn't say “hi” first.
Why is it my wish and not yours?
Is it cuz I wish to be what's normal,
And you are satisfied with how you are judged?
It’s so absurd you think differently by where you stand.
Tell me I'm wrong and we are the same,
Pure and horrible.
Are you misunderstood?
I’m sorry,
I didn't pay attention.

An Abbreviated History of Mecha Part 4.2: A Grand Glorious Gathering (1996-2000)
Tumblr media
Welcome back to An Abbreviated History of Mecha! Last time we left off, the Lost Decade had just begun, Gundam got a radical makeover, CLAMP came onto the scene, Takara created a replacement for Diaclone, and Evangelion would begin its run on television. What we'll see now is the rise of a lot of fan-favorite shows in this era, but we will also see the sudden appearance of a third honorary mecha series. We will also see why [adult swim] is going to play a big picture in all of this, as they will begin to get more involved with the production of anime. With all of that out of the way...
Big O!
Showtime!
Tumblr media
Pocket Monsters/Pokemon (1996, honorary mecha show 3)
Tumblr media
Pocket Monsters, or Pokemon for short, is a multimedia series created by Satoshi Tajiri and the folks at Game Freak, Creatures, and Nintendo that would round out the four anime that would make anime mainstream alongside Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Gundam Wing. The reason why Pokemon is worth mentioning in a series about mecha is due to the nature of a lot of mecha stories, primarily those involving giant robots: Pokemon would grow to eventually become the single largest franchise OF ALL TIME. And as it is a franchise that is aimed primarily at children, this would prove to be one of many things that would help in the decline of giant robot stories, as a lot of the giant robots of old relied heavily on merchandise sales (namely in the form of toys) in order to be successful. Now that Pokemon is in the picture, there is competition, especially since Pokemon's video games would be published by a little company known as Nintendo.
Fortunately, Pokemon wouldn't become the highest-selling franchise of all time just yet. It would take a couple of years for that to happen.
Martian Successor Nadesico (1996) & Martian Successor Nadesico: The Prince of Darkness (1999)
Tumblr media
Produced in 1996 by Xebec, Martian Successor Nadesico would be the first series since the original Gundam to really take a swing at subverting and/or deconstructing the giant robot. Primarily a screwball comedy, Nadesico is known for its extensive use of its show-within-a-show Gekiganger 3 (a pastiche of shows like Getter Robo) to foreshadow events that would happen later on in the story.
Nadesico proved to be popular, but that chance of becoming something more would peter out with the release of the Prince of Darkness movie in 1999.
After War Gundam X (1996)
Tumblr media
Also releasing in 1996 was After War Gundam X, a series that would suffer from the fact that it would be the fourth Gundam series in a row on television. Not helping things is the fact that Gundam X would infamously have its episode count reduced from the then-standard 50 episodes to 39, and then it would also be moved to the Japanese equivalent of the Friday Night Death Slot.
It would remain in obscurity for years until 2013 when Gundam Build Fighters would feature a protagonist whose primary gunpla kit would help to bring the series back into the spotlight.
The Vision of Escaflowne (1996)
Tumblr media
When one thinks of older mecha isekai shows, they are usually thinking of 1996's The Vision of Escaflowne. Escaflowne, unlike its older sister series Magic Knight Rayearth, would feature its giant robots more openly in a truly even blend of mecha action, fantasy adventure, and romance.
Armored Core (1997)
Tumblr media
1997 would see the release of legendary game development studio From Software's Armored Core. Featuring mechanical designs by Shoji Kawamori of Macross fame, Armored Core would see the player navigate through a world of high speed mecha action and hair-tearing difficulty that would become a trademark of FromSoft's future games.
Cowboy Bebop (1997)
Tumblr media
Cowboy Bebop would be the brainchild of one Shinichiro Watanabe. Released in 1997, Cowboy Bebop would take Japan by storm due to its mix of science fiction with the aesthetics and tropes of the western. Part of Cowboy Bebop's legacy has less to do with its popularity in Japan and more to do with how well it did in the west: which was very well.
Like "Cowboy Bebop was part of what made [adult swim] successful in the early days" well. If the quartet of Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, and Pokemon made anime mainstream, then Cowboy Bebop would be the one that would prove to the mainstream that anime wasn't just for children.
The King of Braves, GaoGaiGar (1997)
Tumblr media
Speaking of anime geared for children, 1997 would also see Takara's Brave franchise peak with its final entry: The King of Braves, GaoGaiGar. Acting as an homage to the original Brave Exkaiser, GaoGaiGar would go down in legend as one of the most hot-blooded mecha shows of the 90's, second only to fellow Sunrise production Mobile Fighter G Gundam. Unfortunately, GaoGaiGar would see its viewership falter due to the success of the Pokemon anime, which would bring an official end to the Brave franchise. But it would not be the end of GaoGaiGar's story just yet, as the production staff got to work on another series that would serve as a spiritual sequel to The King of Braves.
Full Metal Panic (1998)
Tumblr media
In 1998, the light novel Full Metal Panic! would be published by Fujimi Fantasia Bunko. Written by Shoji Gatoh, Full Metal Panic would blend elements of giant robot sci-fi with elements of the romance, slice-of-life, and comedy genres. The series would eventually branch out into manga and anime at the turn of the millennium and prove to be one of the big hits of the early 2000's.
While the original light novel along with its manga counterparts would wrap up their stories eventually, the anime would ultimately be abandoned after the release of its fourth season, Invisible Victory, in 2018.
Dai Guard (1999)
Tumblr media
What if you took Getter Robo, made it adhere to real-world physics as much as possible, and then have be piloted by a trio of office workers who have to also navigate a lot of corporate red tape on top of the military trying to undermine their endeavors? That's more or less 1999's Dai-Guard in a nutshell. And don't let that fool you: the giant robot is still as cool as any other giant robot, regardless of the hoops the main cast have to go through just to use the damn thing.
Turn A Gundam (1999)
Tumblr media
Meanwhile at Sunrise, Yoshiyuki Tomino would return to the directing chair for 1999's Turn A Gundam as a way to celebrate Gundam's 20th anniversary. Turn A would feature a very unique set of mechanical designs courtesy of Syd Mead, who was known for his work on Blade Runner, Tron, and Aliens. This series would also mark the end of Gundam's use of cel animation, as the next Gundam series would be the first to use digital animation. As a result, the animators went all out on Turn A Gundam's animation as a proper send-off to cel-animation.
Unfortunately, while Turn A is often regarded as one of, if not the, best Gundam series, its lackluster performance during its initial run would not be enough to help Gundam out. It wouldn't be until 2002 when Gundam would become a major hit again.
Xenogears (1999)
Tumblr media
Directed by Tetsuya Takahashi, Square Enix would release the JRPG Xenogears in 1999. Xenogears would differentiate itself from the competition by combining a combo-based JRPG with giant robots and Gnosticism. A lot of Gnosticism. Unfortunately for Takahashi and company, Xenogears would prove to be a tad bit more ambitious than expected, and boy is that oversimplifying what happened to Xenogears. Suffice it to say that what happened to Takahashi and company to form Monolith Soft under Namco. But, like a lot of other things covered here, that is a story for another time.
Betterman (1999) & The King of Braves, GaoGaiGar FINAL (2000)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reuniting for a spiritual sequel to The King of Braves, GaoGaiGar, the same animation team would create Betterman. Taking a turn to being darker and edgier than its older brother GaoGaiGar, Betterman would be the basis for the OVA finale The King of Braves GaoGaiGar FINAL adding things like a darker storyline, fanservice, and, weirdly enough, more HOT BLOOD.
Unfortunately, plans for the two series to have a crossover would fall apart as Takara shuttered the Brave franchise for good after GaoGaiGar FINAL. It wouldn't be until about 2018 that the two would finally get to meet in The King of Kings: GaoGaiGar vs Betterman.
The Iron Giant (1999)
Tumblr media
Released in 1999 by Warner Bros., The Iron Giant would be the directorial debut of one Brad Bird (the guy who did The Incredibles, among other things). Set in the 1950's, The Iron Giant would tell a story similar to that of the original Godzilla, though in the case of The Iron Giant, the titular character would be treated with much more sympathy due to his earnest attempts at trying to not destroy the town.
The Big O (1999-2003)
Tumblr media
Created in 1999 by Sunrise, The Big O was a mecha show influenced by American media like Batman. Helmed by most of the people who worked on the Giant Robo OVA alongside the controversial Chiaki J Konaka, The Big O was supposed to be a more commercial spin on Giant Robo. Which is wild, because the series was cancelled after its first season in Japan.
Fortunately, that little American channel called [adult swim] would come to the rescue and produce the second season, as The Big O was a big success in the US.
For more on The Big O, I'd recommend Argonbolt's video On The Big O.
Throwbots (1999)
Tumblr media
And finally, LEGO would release the Throwbots series of toys for their Technic line in 1999. Throwbots would prove to be moderately successful, but it's legacy is most known for being the predecessor to BIONICLE.
Conclusion
And that's a wrap on the 90's. As we have seen, the last two decades have been a big boon for mecha, though this would be soon to pass in the following decades. What we will begin to see in the following decades is a change to how anime in general is produced. You can even see it as early as 1999 with some shows such as Dai-Guard using digital animation as opposed to cel animation. The 2000's will see digital animation become the primary way shows get animated, though there will be growing pains. It should be interesting to note that cel animation doesn't go away in its entirety until 2015 when the last holdout, one Sazae-san, finally gave up the cel-animated ghost.
"The journey was long, but soon I found myself accompanied by a strange man in a black tuxedo. I couldn't tell if he was friend or foe, but he looked like he was about to faint from starvation. I think I remember him saying his name was Van... Van of... I don't remember what his title was anymore, he kept on changing it every time I asked him."

Round 1 of preliminaries, group 18
Tumblr media
The first two places get a place on the bracket
Little reminder: there will be 2 more rounds of preliminaries, the losing blorbos of this poll still have 2 chances of getting in the official bracket
Propaganda under the cut
Tobias (Animorphs)
"his mom left him and hes at least a little transcoded and also hes a bird for the rest of his life"
Isaac O'Connor (Paranatural)
"he's like me but specifically when i was thirteen which should tell you all you need to know about both me and him. emotional wreck of a lad who feels excluded from his friend group no matter what. drew a gjinka of a fruit bowl in art class. canonically a fan of hatsune miku. will apparently be eaten by a cat in the future and survive."
Trisana Chandler / Tris (Emelan book series)
"Grumpy girl just wants to be left alone with her books but oops she actually has such a big heart with so much love in it. Always annoyed about having to put down her book to help her friends or save a bunch of innocents. Also she's got trauma out the wazoo, her family didn't want her and she was always bullied for her weight, and then at like age ten she has to kill a bunch of people and live with THAT trauma."
Sokka (Avatar: The Last Air Bender)
"I also like meat, sarcasm, and boomerangs. On a more serious note, he's the only one out of his group of friends for the longest time without special powers (relatable when you're friends with super talented people), he really likes organization and charts (same), and he completely fumbles his first attempt at public speaking (painful, but same). We're also both just a little bit goofy."
Haruhi Fujioka (Ouran Highschool Hostclub)
"She gets into a rich kid school and immediately goes into debt. Constantly annoyed by rich kid problems (including but not limited to: buying them instant coffee instead of expensive ground coffee). She’s supportive but doesn’t let them walk all over her. The whole show revolves around everyone thinking she’s actually a boy just because she has short hair and wears the boys uniform instead of the girls one— and that’s relatable because i wouldn’t want to wear the girls uniform either it’s not great"
Shinji Ikari (Evangelion)
"THE LAST 2 EPISODES OF THE SERIES??? holy shit I've never actually related to some fictional character so much. his self image, attitude, emotions, decisions, relationships, etc; he's just. me. that's not even funny. also thank god this thing is anonymous i would've delete my blog outa shame"

Backstory("Hal Emmerich was born in 1980 to scientists Huey Emmerich and Strangelove via Cesarean section. Huey was a big fan of science fiction movies, specially the HAL 9000 computer featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey, as a result of the film getting himself and Strangelove closer.
Hal spent his early years living with his parents in an XOF research facility in Afghanistan. He ended up being considered by his father for use as a test subject for Metal Gear Sahelanthropus, as its cockpit was so small that only a child could pilot it. This resulted in a huge falling out between Hal's parents. Strangelove vehemently disagreed with Huey's proposition.
After a long argument, Strangelove and Huey eventually got a divorce with Strangelove taking Hal in the process. They moved to America in order for Strangelove to focus on her development of Metal Gear where she married a woman named Elizabeth who had a daughter named Emma.
Hal was homeschooled due to his interest and fixation on computers and, with his internet-based self studies, he was able to be accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned his PhD at a young age. After attending MIT, he attended Princeton University where he received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. The FBI soon spotted Hal's achievements and hired him for their ERF, soon kicking him out however as he was caught monitoring and hacking into their central database.
Eventually, Hal was hired by the defense contractor ArmsTech. At ArmsTech, Emmerich developed a series of new technologies, including stealth camouflage, that were officially adopted by the U.S. Army. Following this, he became the lead engineer for the Metal Gear REX project. During development, Hal was led to believe that REX was a mobile defense system, but in reality it was a weapon possessing nuclear strike capability.")}]

Tentatively Trying To give Doctor Who a Chance again
For the record: I was a long-term fan of the show, but new & classic, until Chibnall's total ineptitutde at character writing made me ragequit forever halfway through his era. I was honestly planning to never watch again cause I felt like even if it got good again what i liked about the show was gone forever & it would forever be tainted by all these bits I hat.
What got me back was Ncuti Gatwa looking genuinely passionate in those gifsets & hearing that he was a longtime fan, which gave me a sense that this is again made by ppl who care about it & get it, which is not a feeling I've ever had since Chibnall took over. I was wanting it to be good, but at the end of series 11 I just found myself just... not excited for the next episode or season, whereas through the last 2 showrunners, though they had their flsws I could never watch the next ep quick enough. They weren't perfect, like, for example, RTD used too many reset buttons and Moffat too many repetitive gimmicks, but they always really sold me on at least the broad strokes of their concept & character, and then that was just... extremly absent. Tropes at best and nondestinct planks of wood at worst. There just wasn't a single real consistent character.
And then on top of that we got the timeless child bullshit that destroyed everything I liked about the Doctor's character.
We've had bad & wonky episodes before but never, I think, a head writer who fundamentally doesn't GET the MC or the science fiction genre.
So even now I'm only giving this a chance with great reluctance.
Expect a series of posts on the actual episodes.
I assume Donna is getting "fixed". Normally I'm quite the tragedy buff & don't like "fixing" canon unhappy endings, but, like with Rebuild of Evangelion, I am willing to accept it here because it's the same writer doing it so it won't contradict the theme, and because it's been so long, we've all had to live with the Bad End being the de the facto status quo, so it feels earned rather than cheap. Plus, many years passed in-universe for both Donna and the Doctor. The weight is still there, even if it's lessened. If both RTD himself and hardcore Donna fans are OK with it, who am I to say it's wrong.

another ask post
Tumblr media
i mean i also read it because a friend whos rly into queer SFF fiction circles recced it but she did kinda lead with "the writer used to write hs fanfic...tasmyn..taz...?" to which i replied
Tumblr media
of COURSE I read the locked tomb because i heard taz had written a book. of course. ill consume most any media made by a beloved homestuck bnf. thats also why i played undertale. and read like..snotgirl. and idk... watched the new dub of neon genesis evangelion.
if u made homestuck fanwork 10 years ago and havent even made it since chances are I still remember and I love you for it.
Tumblr media
sdlkfhsg its funny you sensed that because that drawing did in fact start kinda more........ well, I'd be lying if I said my hands never wrought a drawing toeing over the pg-13 line LOL...
NOT to say i have a secret stash of porn or anything. in general im more interested in the implication of sexuality or mature themes over any explicit depiction. like everything i draw is so softcore itd almost feel silly to make a nsfw acc for anything.
but im not rly jumping to post anything on main either bc i get the sense i have a lot of kids in my social media following. it varies from site to site and fandom to fandom but the themes in my work often circle around childhood, coming of age etc and in general i like stories about kids so the fandoms i draw for have a lot of kids in them. even stuff like IT (stephen king) which is about kids but isn't necessarily for kids.. there were a lot of kids in that fandom lol.
actually thats why ive been censoring swears in comics lately because the tmnt fandom comes across to me as a little young...IDK I've had MULTIPLE people ask me what "sodomize" means because of the joke in this post and I'm like... I Cannot be the one to explain this to you. you have to look it up on your own klfsdhsdg like i wouldn't be doing this if i were doing a comic for mgs or even homestuck wherein the characters textually swear constantly LOL but sometimes u gotta change tacks depending on the faces u see in the crowd yknow.
i HAVE been thinking abt drawing nsfw of sunspot/richard rider/kobak from x-men red just because that comic seemed to be really asking for it. who knows.. if the need rly arises maybe my separate account policy will change.
Tumblr media
its rly more a matter of the fact that i havent read/watched much of any other iterations... im sure id like most lol. I like most things related to my interests regardless of quality. i rly like the marvel ultimate alliance games for instance. sometimes seeing my fave guy is enough he doesnt have to be well written LOL. i dont exactly have a wealth of free time tho thats the real impediment.
i did watch the 2007 movie on new years eve and found it quite charming overall. and i have read about 30-40 issues between the mirage and idw comics. still feels like im barely scratching the surface but i liked em. i rly want to read all the sophie campbell stuff bc i think her work is interesting. jason aaron will be a mixed bag i think lmao. i say as the worlds biggest Wolverine and the X-Men (2011) fan.
Tumblr media
hmm this is kinda hard bc i feel like i naturally draw very loose and the hard part for me is tightening it up. maybe some suggestions tho...
1) hand excercises. i think its easy to forget this when many artists sit in front of the computer all day but drawing is a physical activity u do with ur actual...bodys...muscles lol. if u feel urself tightening up it might help to strech (any google search for "artist hand excercises" should yield good results) or do a page of loose practice strokes like..big circles. long lines. scribbles. that kinda thing. whatever feels good for ur hand. this is also just good to do as a general warm up before u sit down for any drawing sesh.
2) draw further away from the canvas. as a general rule...when ur painting traditionally you do the big strokes with your whole arm outstreched and a long handled brush. and when you do the details its smaller wrist movements and a shorter handled brush. so it might help to take a step back or push back from ur chair a little.. or hold ur tablet a little further away. and hold your pen further away from the nib.
3) change mediums / brush types. some brushes and mediums are more suited to loose sketching and some more inclined towards detail work. so changing ur tool could help. also! i personally have this problem where sometimes if im using a brush i feel really familiar with the pressure to make a "good" "finished" "perfect" drawing is greater... if i want to force myself to loosen up ill switch to a tool i dont use as often so it feels like the pressure is off. a lot of times for me this is switching from digital to traditional. but sometimes its switching from a small pen to a big marker. or a smooth pen to a textured one. or a nice brush to a shitty dried up marker.
but also every body is different so i dont think these tips will work for everyone. u should listen to what ur body and mind tell u and how drawing feels to you
Tumblr media
bro just sign up and set it up i dont think theres much to it... i dont rly think too much abt my itch.io store because its digital goods so u just upload the file and let it do its thing. no distribution work needed on ur part. youll notice i barely even advertise my itch unless i have smth new on there lol.. its easy. but good luck!!!
Tumblr media
idk if im the best person to ask this im more a comic fan than i am a comic professional... a comic hobbist.
well. scott mcclouds understanding comics and making comics are good books on the craft. i think i had to buy them for a class in art school once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
other than that idk just keep at it. comics are really laborious i think for a lot of people the hardest part is sitting down and doing it.
i think a lot of people have a very instinctive understanding of how to read comics and what they look like so whatever you think seems like good way to tell the story you have in mind, its probably right. if u get stuck, study comics that have done something similar. most people in comics are relatively self taught and actually it can be problematic bc you can tell when a lot of comic artists are all copying the same like 5 old white guys LMAO. but on the flip side if you make sure to reference and study broadly your comics will almost assuredly feel unique.
Tumblr media
sorry im responding to this anyways. this is just a really nice ask. i like when people reference my older work bc i feel like sometimes theyre subtly implying it wasnt very good LMAOOO. but its true! at least compared to the work i make now ^^ and the fact that im still making art is whats keeping me from being embarassed abt how much of my old art just floats around online lmao im never ashamed to be growing and learning. isnt that a nice thought <3

hello~ this is my small place in the internet where I talk about writing (and more specifically my writing). I’m actively looking for more writers to follow, so feel free to interact with this post so I can see you~!
about my writing
despite I can write about anything if I think a story is exciting enough, I pander more to wholesome and slice of life but also psychological horror and angst, so my WIPs are a true fifty-fifty where you can fall into a cute kitten story or a morbid suicidal one—but don’t worry, I always tag triggers when needed!
I’m not a fan of romance stories so don’t expect them unless it’s platonic or subplot (and when expected, this is a reminder that chances are higher for it to be wlw).
since I’m a non-native english speaker, I might make some typos or some phrases can seem weird. if so, feel free to correct me~
about my WIPs
I’ll post them here as I start taking them out of my head and at least making a middling draft + talking about them :]
about me
just in case you might wanna know something more about the person your inner voice is performing as:
I’m Gabe (gaah-bee), early 20s, latina native indigenous, biromantic asexual, Neon Genesis Evangelion obsessed and Gorillaz enthusiast.
I’m majoring Language and Literature at uni. I work as copywriter since 2020 and I write fiction since a child.
irrelevant stuff you might also wanna know (because why not?): I’m NeFi sp/sx 794 slUe[I] san-phleg.
my tags
#my post | #my writing | #gabe says stuff
for original posts / my original writing / me saying random stuff :]
that's it!
I hope you’ll like what you’ll see here as I’m sure I’ll love writeblr’s works! see you around~

Would it be inaccurate to your sci-fi au to imagine the Fire Nation as Neon Genesis Evangelion-esque? (I haven’t even watched Evangelion to be honest, but I don’t mean the psychological rollercoaster side of it, more just like the cool science fiction side)
I imagine the Fire Nation in the your au would have something similar to the Evas? Maybe? I don’t know if that’s accurate or not. When I look at them, it definitely reminds me of something ozai would pull out if he could
idk tho. kicks rock
Hi! I turned this around in my head to think about it, because when I was coming up with the sci fi AU, my main idea was "have the characters speed around in a city". I'm not opposed to the idea of Fire Nation giant mechas, but maybe this could be introduced way late in the series (perhaps the way that the war zeppelins were introduced mid-season 3 in canon). Any earlier, and the mechas would override the usefulness of - moving on rollerblades over railways and pipes.
(I have watched NGE, and I'm actually not really a fan of its narrative so I'd say you're not missing much! ^^; it's too much soap-opera and gratuitous torture for my taste. But I'm a fan of giant robots!)

are there any works of fiction you wish were longer or otherwise continued through sequels or spinoffs and are there any works of fiction where you feel the opposite way?
i find that usually there are way more works that have sequels and spinoffs where it is unnecessary than the opposite: avatar the last airbender, soul eater, evangelion, SHREK (LOL) come to mind. ace attorney is usually brought up as something that should've ended long ago, but i think the later ace attorney games are alright, while not as good as the first three. at the end of the day i truly appreciate anything self-contained and am easily disillusioned with sequel announcements. it was the case with spiderverse, but in the end across was good enough. i am excited about future knives out movies though (tho glass onion was just ok...)
spinoffs on the other hand can be really good. my favorite spinoff ever is better call saul but i thought el camino sucked. i loved the homestuck epilogues but i don't particularly care for homestuck 2. arguably monogatari itself is full of spinoffs ; you could probably consider off&monster to be a spinoff. which i don't mind but monogatari is kind of a special case...
if i had to ask for a spinoff... you know what, umineko is long enough and i haven't read last note of the golden witch yet (i already know who it's about) but i would still eat it up if there was a (SHORT) spinoff about natsubeatrice or anything about kinzo's wife. and while anime remakes are unnecessary 99% of the time, they should totally go for a new umineko anime in my opinion, especially while the stage play gathers new fans

Okay, after watching End of Evangelion in theaters this past Sunday, I decided to do an analysis of the live action sequence in the film.
This sequence can perhaps be considered the weirdest part of the movie, as it doesn't truly fit in the plot, unlike the other weird parts.
So a quick rundown.
Taking a break from being in the sea of lcl where everyone is a singular being. We cut to live action of a man opening his eyes, taking in an empty movie theater.
Tumblr media
Followed by a sequence of everyday clips.
Then we see people watching the early screening of Evangelion death & rebirth in theaters.
Tumblr media
Followed by the voice actors who played Asuka, Rei, and Misato
Tumblr media
Followed by three mannequins dressed up as Asuka, Rei, and Misato
Tumblr media
Followed once more by people watching Evangelion Death & Rebirth, followed once more by an empty theater, then some fanmail to the Gainax team, and then we return to the regularly scheduled program that is human instrumentality.
Let us now take a look at the dialogue.
Shinji (voice): Hey… Misato (voice): What? Shinji (voice): What are dreams? Misato (voice): Dreams? Rei: Yes, dreams. (Screen text:  Do you feel good?) Shinji (voice): I don’t understand… I don’t really understand reality. Rei (voice): So, you can’t understand the gap between other’s reality and your own truth. Shinji (voice): I don’t know where to find happiness. Rei (voice): So, you can only find happiness in your dreams. Shinji (voice): Then, this isn’t reality… Because no one is here. Rei (voice): Yes, it’s a dream. Shinji (voice): So, I’m not here either. Rei (voice): You were trying to remake reality with convenient fantasies. Shinji (voice): Is that wrong? Rei (voice): You were using fabrications to escape from reality. Shinji (voice): Can’t I dream alone? Rei (voice): That would not be a dream.  It would just be compensating for reality. Shinji (voice): Then… where is my dream? Rei (voice): It is the continuation of reality. Shinji (voice): Where is… my reality? Rei (voice): It is at the end of your dream.
The dialogue seems to imply that the live action real world is Shinji's dream, a world where he doesn't exist. The truth is though, that it forces the viewer to confront the fact that Evangelion isn't real. It's a dream.
Now Anno has stated that Evangelion a consideration of Otaku, specifically the aspect of escapism, hence Shinji's common line in Evangelion, "I mustn't run away." While in Shinji's case it is meant as not running away from responsibility, in human instrumentality it also comes to mean not running away from the harsh pain of reality.
In order to further analyze this point, one must consider Anno's relationship with the fanbase. In an interview he has stated
For the TV series, we certainly ran out of time. We had no time for episode 25, so we remade it for the theatrical edition. The final episode, episode 26, was going to be that way originally.
Episode 26 was always meant to be the positive ending it was in the show, but because of the fan response, he was made to redo it to something darker and more gritty.
Another fact is that there was a live action scene cut from the film. In it we see the voice actors of Misato, Rei, Asuka, and Toji, playing their characters, living out their lives in a world where Shinji doesn't exist. Throughout this scene, we hear Shinji, voiced by Hideaki Anno this time, calling out to the characters, but they can't hear him. In the end, he remarks, "I'm not here." Anno is recognizing his own attempts at escapism through his work, and admitting that he too is an otaku, he is trying to convey to the audience that he is not attacking them, but trying to help them, as well as himself, with the problem of escapism.
The live action is therefore inserted not as a revenge against the fans, but statement to them, about learning to live in reality, while still enjoying the fantasy and dreams of such fiction.

discussion in a discord the other day has me thinking about the idea of the "deconstruction" in fiction, and how that term has been abused over the years. Whenever a work of media in a generally derided genre gets popular, you'll hear people talking about how it's a deconstruction of the genre; as if to say it's not really part of the genre, they aren't really fans of something like that. Which is really dumb. if you're just using deconstruction to mean "good" or to denigrate certain genres your use of the word is pointless. So I understand why there's been pushback, why so many people angrily talk about how tvtropes has rotted people's brains and the idea of a deconstruction is useless.
However, and maybe this is just because I'm biased from actually really liking tvtropes as a kid, but I do think the term itself is fine. It's useful to have a word to describe that storytelling approach. The issue is people who decided that was the best or only valid approach, rather than simply treating it as one amongst many, a descriptor with neutral valence. In the eyes of judgmental and ill-informed people, to deconstruct is to elevate the work; I don't see it that way.
Actually, this post got me to check tvtropes for the first time in years, to make sure I was remembering their definitions right, and I think for all that people complain about it, that site understands deconstruction's neutrality perfectly well. The example given on the trope page is a version of the children's cartoon Tom and Jerry, where instead of slapstick comedy, the events lead to Tom receiving permanent brain damage. If someone tried to claim that this deconstruction was inherently better than the original, they would be laughed out of the room. Sure, it might be interesting to tell a story with that concept, some kind of dark fic, but to claim that was the best way to tell the story, or even an inherently good one, is ridiculous.
To the people who claim that Evangelion is the only good mecha because it deconstructs the genre, or that Madoka is the only good mahou shoujo (and let's accept for the sake of argument that these actually are deconstructions, which is debatable) - having to accept the brain damaged cat story would hopefully be enough to get them to agree their philosophy is ludicrous. A deconstruction is a story like any other, no better or worse. Of course, that does kind of bring the real issue to the forefront - people who say this do not actually believe that this is the best way to tell a story. Rather, they have unexamined assumptions about the respectability of certain genres, and use the idea of the trope to stop themselves from having to question these assumptions or admit value. To say that these shows they hold up as "deconstructing the genre" are well executed and proud examples of their genre, in conversation with storytelling ideas passed around decades before they were made, goes against the narrative of the brutal deconstruction tearing down their predecessors.
Which makes my final conclusion very lackluster. The idea of deconstruction, subversion, etc, all these terms, are fine and good when used as descriptors, they have not made anything worse in and of themselves. Instead they are merely often used in very irritating ways by people who don't want to honestly engage with a genre. But this tendency existed independently of the terms, and if these descriptors didn't exist they'd invent something else, it's not the words' fault.
