There is a very, very small chance, if you live in the States and deal with people from, say Oklahoma, Illinois, Texas, etc., you might hear of what are called "Mineral Rights". You might think "Oh, grandma just died, and so I just inherited a bunch of land." Before you, idk, start harassing family friends because you're convinced they're hiding the Truth™ from you, here is a short, convenient guide to mineral rights:

They are not rights to the land, they are rights to the minerals. Hence "Mineral Rights".

You only own what's beneath the surface and any income you get from the oil companies (derogatory). You cannot build a barn on top of it. You cannot sell it to anyone so that THEY can build a barn on top of it. Because you do not own the land. You own the rights to the minerals. The Mineral Rights, if you will.

You do not even always have the right to decide who drills, because, if you don't lease to anyone, they will often decide to pool you in with the neighboring plots, because they are *just that considerate*. (There is no universe where that mineral is not getting drilled.) Or "horizontal drilling" which means that they just take your oil while they're getting your neighbors'. Isn't that fun? Doesn't it make you want to chew glass?

Because the oil companies control the degree of oil drilling, measure the output, AND write the check, if you had any hopes and dreams of becoming a wealthy oil baron, good luck.

Also please make sure that you are actually on the trust that you are trying to get access to so that, idk, you don't harass family friends before you realize that your family member disinherited you a couple of years back, because that would be *really* embarrassing.

There's a balance of understanding but also frustration. She's respected and admired as the queen of Olympus. Let's even have a headcanon that Hera would congratulate her when she would be on Olympus and seeing her sons. Sons in ancient Greece were considered a blessing after all. This is a new low for Disney's music marketing team and executives.

Freya Skye's cover of Who Says was released on tiktok about a week ago, which is a week after Jojo Siva released her cover of Karma.

If you don't know the drama there, the short of it is that Jojo did a lot to imply she wrote it, so when it came out that she just bought the rights to it, people were pissed.

Back to Freya, she was hyping Who Says up as a cover on instagram before the Jojo drama started, but when it came time for the actual release, her tiktoks referred to it as "her song" and "new song" instead of a cover, leading people to accuse her of trying to say it's an original song and not give credit to Selena Gomez.

Keeping in mind she's a Disney girl and knowing Disney's tight grip on their stars and their social media, there's no way she was in charge of making those videos or the captions. The social media team at Disney decided that the press and attention they'd get for making it look like Freya was trying to claim Who Says as an original was worth throwing this poor girl under the bus. After all, whether people are streaming Freya's version or Selena's, money's still going into Disney's pocket.

Oh, and they're doing it to Kylie Cantrall's cover of Boo'd Up now, too, even after there was so much backlash against Freya that they had to go back in and edit captions and remove the song from a video that said "my song" in the text.

These poor girls are being chewed up by Disney the same way their predecessors were, even in the wake of Quiet on Set and enhanced public scrutiny of children's entertainment companies. It's absolutely disgusting and I hope Freya and Kylie can get out and get on top now that Disney's actively trying to bomb their careers.

And her long term "what has been" as California's attorney general includes arresting parents of chronically ill children for 'truancy violations' a policy which she was warned would disproportionately affect low-income people of color, laughed at the idea of decriminalizing recreational cannabis use, appealed a county decision that the death penalty was unconstitutional, fought to keep non-violent prisoners locked up so their labor could be exploited for wildfire fighting, and has a track record of denying appeals and new DNA tests on wrongful conviction cases.

Don't let the memes do what they did for Biden by removing Harris from the context of her record and all in which she lives and what came before her.

Something New?

I have been toying with the idea of uploading some small, unscripted, podcast-style talks that I have anyway with my spouse. Discussing sociology, philosophy, media. They are definitely train of consciousness and get badly derailed, but that's a bit of the fun? The audio quality isn't that great. We just sit outside and talk and smoke. But we sometimes have some interesting things to say.

I figure I can probably upload them here as sound bites and, if you care to listen, I'm open for feedback and interaction. Questions or topics you'd like us to discuss. I'm not too invested in the idea of doing these live or even at a great production value. So I am not expecting most people to be interested. But I thought I'd just throw this out because I enjoy these conversations and think there is some good content in the messiness of it. This is typically how ideas for essays get started.

But it is very, very unscripted. And as such, it is highly tangential and gets lost in the sauce of things sometimes. This one, for example, started off for 2 seconds being about Helluva and immediately became a dissection of Ayn Rand and Bioshock.

Where it got lost was how Stolas' early introductions offered a lot of opportunity to dissect Ayn Rand's Egotist Philosophy and how his seeking personal fulfillment can be healthy, even at the cost of hurting those around him. But how Egotist Philosophy is damaging at its core while Egotist Psychology is a healthier approach to embracing our radical freedom and what those differences are.

Spoiler alert, we never got that far. Bioshock got in the way. But it was a conversation I found interesting.

Apologies in advance if you simply cannot stand the sound of my voice. There is a reason I typically write and don't create youtube videos. Also apologies for it being on a Google drive account and not uploaded elsewhere. It's not the most elegant of approaches but this is just an idea.
