One of the funny things about older systems programmers is that they all use at least two inscrutable weird pieces of software in their day to day workflow because it was hot new shit when they were 21 and they never gave it up. My boss uses fvwm for his desktop. The senior networking guy where I went to university edits everything in joe's own editor.

in fvwm i have a config that minimizes windows into a pile in the corner of the screen, and the minimization scale is always the same ratio, they're proportionally smaller windows. i adore this. it looks great and being able to compare the size/aspect of each minimized window makes seeking them quicker

I’m out of action with a sprained ankle…

This morning I twisted it as I got up, because it had gone limp and dead. Well, it came back online albeit with a little damage. I did my run as usual. Now it’s aggravated and needs some TLC to heal hopefully by tomorrow. Am elevating it and taking it easy.

Been killing time playing with OpenBSD on my Kabini rig. It’s an OS around as old as Linux tho it started with more functionality, being a real Unix. Fvwm is quite pleasant, reminiscent of my Slackware days in ‘95. Hard to believe 29 years have gone by since I dabbled in Linux while in college. I never graduated and the university was eventually disbanded. I never got a full time job for more than a year, plagued by stomach problems and chronic forgetfulness.

Plans of going on a long walk tomorrow look doubtful.

I did finally cave and get back onto Mr. C's main computer, to mess around with some games. I don't particularly like hanging out in his office lair (with uncomfortable chair), or using other people's hardware, but games.

Did finally get XFCE installed, at least. Haven't even set it up yet beyond switching to a dark theme to spare my eyeballs, but at least now I feel slightly more at home than in Debian's default GNOME setup or his long-preferred FVWM.

(Nothing really wrong with either one, btw. I am just particular, and I also didn't feel like putting in much effort to get things the way I like them on a system I rarely use. Or to even mess with getting screenshots where they need to go over there, instead of just opting for the janky phone photo.)

I’m gonna plug my namesake, puppy linux. The official puppy images are based on either Debian/Ubuntu or Slackware, but are optimized for lower spec PCs, including using classic DEs like Enlightenment or even IceWM or FVWM.

hello linux side of tumblr! i have an old laptop that i want to install linux on. this is a fujitsu lifebook t4210, an old 32 bit tablet laptop. im looking for recommendations on what distro to use!

i use arch on my main laptop and ive grown quite fond of it. i would have to use arch 32 which kinda sucks so idk if arch is a good option here

i have already tried debian but i dont think i liked it. tho maybe i just dont like kde. shoukd i try some other desktop environment?
