Arthur/Eames (Inception) fics rec

Hi!

I am probably 14 years late but I have always wanted to create a rec for fanfictions about Arthur & Eames, which is one of my favorite pairing tbh. I have read the fics over 10 years ago so apologies if some of the sum ups are a bit blurry. I did not put all the fandom classics but the ones that I absolutely adore and which stuck with me all those years.

Buckle up, here is my top ten:

2. We Can Do This Until We Pass Out (29k) by desires - GO READ IT NOW. Chav!Eames, which pays hommage to young Tom Hardy, such a penting, innit

3. Skin Deep (17k) by Starlingthefool - a tattoo shop AU to end ALL tattoo shop AU. Absolutely amazing. Loved the portrayal of both, loved the twist, loved the tattoos ideas. Made me wish at 15 I could have some. Spoiler alert: years later, I DO.

4. I've got nothing to do today but smile (the only living boy in New York) (20k) by gyzym - loved the pacing and Arthur’s passion for baking when stressed out, but could not really relate with his burn out. 10 years later tho??? can totally relate and this fic is one of my inspiration to open a coffeeshop

5. My Lungs Are Fresh and Yours To Keep (18k) by black Betty 26 - Did I almost tattoo the title of this fic on my body? Yes. Yes I almost did. Band!AU, super sexy Arthur, great tension between Arthur and Eames, LOVED IT.

6. Rough Trade (23k) by whiskyrunner - warning some strong internalized homophobia but damn the sex is hot and the alchemy between Arthur and Eames is incredible

7. Late night phone call (15k) by sparkledark - this one holds a special place for me because when I was REALLY feeling down, I thought about it and was okay in this one fanfic when Eames was feeling v low he called a suic*de hotline and everything went better and that's why I called one and yup it probably saved my life. so kudos to this pic and the characterization of Eames is to die for.

8. Towards Zero (20k) by Mirabella - great plot, with a twist at the end, I read it like 10 times

9. In Our Kingdom by the Shore (10k) by Alezane - if you love Gothic retelling, the little mermaid and great writing? This fic is for you. One of my absolute favs.

10. Incipit (9k) by the hoyden - cute, made me want to be a writer

I can't extinguish the fire though I've tried (7k) by aprettyaway - if you have firefighters fantasy (don't lie, we all do), read this one. Cute and funny and HOT (pun intended)

Two Steps Towards Make Believe (4k) by ifeelbetter - short and cute, if you have insomnia rub your feet with magnesium oil it truly helps

nothing we could judge (12k) by green_postit - a fic about Eames and Sherlock in college. Their banter is everything and they are super smart in the fic, taught me new psy concepts and got a brain boner

Trivium (5k) by thefourofswords - academia and philosophy??? that's my love language baby

5. What’s a crackship you love? Hmmmm, so this is an interesting question. I'm not sure if we define crackship as within fandom, or like, cross fandom? Like, absolutely banana-boat type ship? WHAT IS THE CRITERIA? TO FANLORE: "A crack ship is a ship that is highly ridiculous, bizarre, disturbing, and/or unlikely to ever become canon. The characters don't have any chemistry, never interact, are in different canons or timelines, are different species, one is an inanimate object, etc." OK. Using this criterion (subtract disturbing, though, because... no?):

(MCU) MARVEL: WinterIron (Bucky x Tony) & WinterHawk (Bucky x Clint) probably both count in the MCU for Crackship selections. WinterHawk makes a bit more sense in some of the comic stories (Hawkeye & The WinterSoldier) with a bonus option of a Triad featuring Natasha, if you're into that. (I'm not mad about it, to be honest).

TMFU/The Man From Uncle (Movie): Napollya/Spies In Love, etc. So I love Napoleon Solo x Illya Kuryakin. I'm not sorry for it. I'll probably write about it. CanonWise, probably not. Bromance wise? Off the charts. Blame Henry & Armie, if you must.

Criminal Minds: Derek Morgan x Spencer Reid. Not gonna become canon but honestly, there was way too much "Pretty Boy" for me not to go "they should totally make out". This is a pairing I'm casually affectionate for, I haven't read much or written any.

Inception: Do we consider DreamHusbands aka Arthur x Eames a crackship? Unlikely to become canon and minimal interaction. Whatever, I ship it like burning.

DC (Comics, Cartoon, DCCU, Whatever): I'm always a fan of SuperBat or SuperWonderBat.. So. Superman x Batman, Superman x Batman x WonderWoman, all good. Supremely powerful alien & warrior vs the man that keeps them human? Continueeee. 

Crossover Crackships: (I wasn’t sure above was cracky enough?)  *Eliot Spencer (Leverage) x Carlos "Cougar" Alvarez (Losers) x Jake Jensen (Losers) is a great triad ship. I read like, 2 fics but oh man, hot like burning. Toni Likey, very very much. *Lo Zingaro aka Fabio Cannizzaro (They Call Me Jeeg aka Lo Chiamavano Jeeg Robot) x Majid (Wolf): Bad Boys in Love CrossoverFic. Blame the TOG server. Luca Marinelli & Marwan Kenzari's chemistry in The Old Guard has me shipping a bunch of their alternate characters, but none as hard as these guys yet. It's pretty cracktastic, I'm still not sorry.

Any good Jason Todd fanfics to recommend?( Besides yours of course!)

I don’t read much fanfic these days, mostly to keep my own fics free of other writers’ ideas and headcanons, but here are a few authors and fics I have read and can whole-heartedly recommend.

@cerusee​ is the queen of fix-it fics with a true to original canon Robin!Jason and a Good Batdad™ Bruce. In particular, I would recommend:

Scheherezade, in which Alfred slowly pries the details of Jason’s resurrection out of him and becomes ever more frustrated with Bruce.

Honor Their Mistakes (Everybody Makes), the follow-up to Scheherezade.

Safe Space, in which Bruce makes some disturbing discoveries about how Jason views his relationship with Bruce. This one almost made me cry.

I See You Everywhere, which is about Bruce visiting Jason’s grave. Uncharacteristically for Cerusee, this one does not have a happy ending. Also, it did actually made me cry. It also made me write a fix-it sequel.

Death Comes To Town, in which Death the Endless visits a diner Jason and Dick are at, Jason does his best to protect Dick from... you know... the literal personification of death, and Dick finally gets that stick out of his ass and decides to be a good brother.

And the three prompt/dare fics she’s wrote for me so far: Atalanta, Chance Encounter, and Barbarians. (I say so far because she’s made the mistake of daring me to write something horrible twice now and I’ve always delivered. I am waiting for the next dare :P)

Other authors and fics I can recommend:

laceymcbain’s Robins United series, which is one of the most kudoed Jason fics/series on AO3 and for a good reason.

CasualDanger’s To Reconcile, in which somebody finally tells Jason that they actually missed him and love him.

barfboy’s Arkham Narc, in which the Arkham Knight militia goons are good bros to Arkham!Jason.

roserelease’s Family Comes First, in which Alfred kills Joker to protect Jason.

Kai_Maciel’s Outsider, in which the batkids roast Bruce for taking Jason back to Magdala Valley and Bruce tries to reconcile with him. One of the very first Jason fics I ever read. Still one of my favorites.

 Sothis story is not finished yet and the author takes waaay long to post updateson it but she has promised not to abandon it soo…It is Nightwing-centric, witha whole mess of comic Teen Titans making appearances.  The author has written a lot of stories abouta world where Dick became a Talon, and in this tale Talon-on-the-run winds upon Earth-1 and Nightwing is trying to figure out who this apparent clone of hisis.  Talon Dick has always intrigued me,and it is interesting seeing him and Nightwing face off.

HOLY HECK this is one of my favorite Jason Todd fanfics EVER.  I love the description by the author “The onewhere Dick bleeds a lot and Jason argues with everybody.”  Jason is in the wrong spot at the wrong time,ie. He finds Dick bleeding to death and is forced to save him.  Tim and Damian make appearances.  Jason has anger issues.  That doesn’t stop him from caring.  Bruce and Jason hash things out in the mostbeautiful (painful) way.

4.  Wheel and Blade

 Inwhich Dick confronts Damian about his practice of taking weapons to school, andalso gets slightly distracted by the idea of living in a vardo.  I love this story because it shows the bestway to parent Damian—not by telling him no “because I said so” but byexplaining and debating things like he is smart and capable.

This is THE BEST Nightwing fan film I haveever seen.  I love the Dick Grayson in it—he’sgot acrobatics, sounds like Jesse McCartney (Robin/Nightwing’s VA in YJ), and is quite handsome.  He fights, gets the stuffing beat out of himand keeps getting back up, has a bit of a temper, loves Barbara—perfection.  Watch it, you won’t regret it.  (Also Jason is there yay!  I will take him in any capacity I can get. And I kinda really like the actor for Bruce?)

2.     RedHood: The Series—Episode One “Homecoming”

My favorite Jason Toddfanfilm!!!  Heavily featuring TimDrake!  Look this adaption is fab, I lovethe actors and the dialogue and the fight between Jason and Tim (spoiler?)  As far as I know they are trying to puttogether a second episode.  Watch thevideo where Jason Todd tries to get people to donate money for it, itsHILARIOUS

3.      Batman The Animated Series is on Netflix tillSeptember 1st.  I’m in thesecond season and love it a lot…Alfred is so freaking sassy!

 It’s just five minutesand doesn’t have any dialogue, and it doesn’t come close to deserving an Oscar, but dang it it’s hard to find Damian stuff…and also seeing a littlekid running around in the Robin costume made me realize that there is nothing Iwant more than to see Damian Wayne on the big screen, being all angry assassinkid, and Dick Grayson capturing him in a hug…

5. Gotham on Netflix

I am pretty sure you already watch this? But if not, DO!  It is AMAZING.  I love it so much, especially Bruce and Alfred and Selina Kyle

E.  Some things from Batman: Dark Victory

Okay I know he is a talented young acrobat and all but how the FUDGE did Dick get up on that chandelier?!  the kid can truly fly (yeah yeah, the stairs probably lead up to a hallway floor/balcony that Dick leapt off of but still) I wonder how many grey hairs the kid gave Alfred in those first weeks alone

On dark days I like to remember the time bby birb Dick Grayson caved in the Joker’s cheek with a well-placed kick.  My nine or ten year old son then proceeded to smash in the Joker’s teeth with a stick a few minutes later and it was amazing

You think I lied??  Nah my son Dick Grayson was cracking teeth and bones and witty puns from Day 1.  Go Robin!!!

Okay so just look at this picture.  Bby Dick is SO FREAKING TINY!!!  also very intense. OMG Batman’s fists are as big as his first son’s head!  *cue a very many feels in my heart*

F.  Random things I am including because I feel like it, and they all revolve around Dick Grayson mostly because he is my fave so…

1. Apparently some official websites say that Nightwing’s martial arts specialty is Aikido.  I do not think that word means what they think it means

4.  There once was a dumb writer who thought killing Nightwing for real would be a good idea, and he tried writing toward that end, but everybody else was like hahahaha NO

5.  I used to hate when fic writers would shorten Damian’s name to Dami (kind of like how I majorly dislike when people shorten Sirius Black’s name to Siri, he is not an iPhone gosh).  But then I read a post on tumblr that said something about Dami actually meaning something in Arabic, something like blood or life-blood or heart blood…I can’t exactly remember what and maybe it isn’t even true but I choose to believe it is and that Dick knows exactly what it means and he calls Damian Dami as a way to show how special he is, how much Dick loves him.  Because Damian is his little brother/son and means the absolute world to Dick.  And Damian, though he pretends to despise all nicknames, absolutely LOVES that Dick calls him this

7) when asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?

It depends! On the Internet it’s like, a pretty cool (albeit normal) thing, but irl if people learn that I write, they’ll usually ask me “what kinds of things do you write” and I have to scramble for an answer that isn’t blatantly “gay fanfiction because are straight writers even aware of how hard they’re queer-coding their characters?” and “angsty teenage poetry”. (I’m gonna maybe have to tell my therapist about the stuff I actually write, because it’s a big part of me lmao)

18) were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?

OH GOD SO MANY

Probably Harry Potter when I was younger, which might be the reason that I still have trouble differentiating between British English and American English. 

The first one that I was consciously influenced by was probably A Partial History of Lost Causes by Jennifer DuBois (it’s a great book, please read it). 

And then there’s Lorde, whose lyrics I basically devoured for like, a whole year or so. She cites Ray Carver and her mother as her biggest writing influences, and says what she loves about them is that they try to pack the most meaning into the smallest number of words possible, kinda like minimalism in writing, you know? And I don’t think I’ve ever been able to really draw out a scene or just let dialogue go wherever it can, because I always feel this need to really. limit my words. idk.

Fanfics are actually my biggest influencers, though. Which sounds like, hokey and gross and shit, but it’s true. Some transformative works out there are just pure-ass genius.

There’s like, the Not Easily Conquered trilogy by dropdeaddream and WhatAreFears, which is like, hands-down the best fucking literature I have ever read in my whole life, holy fucking shit. There’s also Fallible Creatures by scioscribe??? And probably about 50% of the fics in the Inception fandom, too. I think the authors whose writing styles intrigued me the most were Aja, laceymcbain, weatherfront, gunsandbutter, etc. etc.

Rec: This was just loveliness. Danny being oh so sweet to the (emotionally and physically) wounded Steve and Steve leaning on Danny and making him feel needed. And Grace being a balm on these two damaged souls with her cuteness.
