I am probably 14 years late but I have always wanted to create a rec for fanfictions about Arthur & Eames, which is one of my favorite pairing tbh. I have read the fics over 10 years ago so apologies if some of the sum ups are a bit blurry. I did not put all the fandom classics but the ones that I absolutely adore and which stuck with me all those years.

2. We Can Do This Until We Pass Out (29k) by desires - GO READ IT NOW. Chav!Eames, which pays hommage to young Tom Hardy, such a penting, innit

3. Skin Deep (17k) by Starlingthefool - a tattoo shop AU to end ALL tattoo shop AU. Absolutely amazing. Loved the portrayal of both, loved the twist, loved the tattoos ideas. Made me wish at 15 I could have some. Spoiler alert: years later, I DO.

4. I've got nothing to do today but smile (the only living boy in New York) (20k) by gyzym - loved the pacing and Arthur’s passion for baking when stressed out, but could not really relate with his burn out. 10 years later tho??? can totally relate and this fic is one of my inspiration to open a coffeeshop

5. My Lungs Are Fresh and Yours To Keep (18k) by black Betty 26 - Did I almost tattoo the title of this fic on my body? Yes. Yes I almost did. Band!AU, super sexy Arthur, great tension between Arthur and Eames, LOVED IT.

6. Rough Trade (23k) by whiskyrunner - warning some strong internalized homophobia but damn the sex is hot and the alchemy between Arthur and Eames is incredible

7. Late night phone call (15k) by sparkledark - this one holds a special place for me because when I was REALLY feeling down, I thought about it and was okay in this one fanfic when Eames was feeling v low he called a suic*de hotline and everything went better and that's why I called one and yup it probably saved my life. so kudos to this pic and the characterization of Eames is to die for.

8. Towards Zero (20k) by Mirabella - great plot, with a twist at the end, I read it like 10 times

9. In Our Kingdom by the Shore (10k) by Alezane - if you love Gothic retelling, the little mermaid and great writing? This fic is for you. One of my absolute favs.

Nonspecific timeframe.  During a case with witches, Dean wakes up with no memory of how he got there and surrounded by a lot of very large feathers.  Sam explains what they were up to, but its only when Cas comes back that Dean gets the real story and his memories back.  The witch had fought back with an aphrodisiac spell and Cas had been the one to look after him.

Gosh there are so, so many ways this could unfold (and why we have a breadth of so many great fics!). I've imagined it one hundred different ways!!! If I could describe my perfect scenario, I think of how messy these two individuals are, and how seriously they feel about each other and my mind goes rampant.

There is a line I think about so much in one of my fave fics (Mutually-Assured Seduction by laceymcbain) that says about Arthur and Eames getting together: "I thought it would be like watching tigers circle. It's more like circus clowns on those tiny bicycles."

I think it would be a lot like that.

My go-to is always forced proximity. Forced to realise what they have together, what they could have together - what they are at risk of losing now that they've had it for a while. Whether that's fake/pretend relationship, being stuck in a safehouse/stuck sharing a living space for work. Or literal forced proximity, like being stuck in a cupboard.

And there is a moment of intimacy - of kissing, finally getting there hands on one another and have you ever felt a certain way, when you love someone and they touch you, and you know your body is not the same as it was before? It will take an entire shedding cycle of your cells for you to feel like yourself again.

They've already crossed that threshold of doing it once, right? Like ripping off the bandaid - the scab they've been trying to protect is now exposed so if they do it once again, what's the issue? And then what's the harm in doing it again - ?

Suddenly it becomes more than just something that sets your skin on fire - it becomes a source of comfort - to yourself, and to the person you're touching, the person you're kissing - when you share an intimate moment to make someone else feel better, to feel appreciated, you're already in love, friend, and now you've got receipts all over your DNA that you can't cash in. And maybe Arthur and Eames get into an argument over something stupid at that point, they've been living out of each others pockets enough to get comfortable to fight over something petty like dishes that haven't been soaked or wasting electricity or the thermostat settings and it blows up into something else entirely, something deeper and more serious, it becomes a shouting match and one yells "if you don't like it, you can just leave!"

And the other does, they're gone for five hours, or a day, and it doesn't matter because its long enough for the heart-wilting, nauseating realisation that they will never get this thing again with the other person, and god they're so fucking stupid for thinking it could ever just be a handful of kisses, of touches, that their feelings would not influence how they hold each other. They go back, to finish the job, expecting to be heartbroken all alone, to carry on like coworkers ---except their bodies know each other so well, they could come back together and meet in the middle even with their eyes closed.

And they nearly do, colliding in a heartfelt, near violent kiss, clutching at each other as if trying to imprint the other person the same way they have them. People who don't have feelings for each other don't kiss like this right?

Yeah.

THAT BEING SAID aha I do also love the very quiet ways in which they get together. Man meets man, asks him to dinner, and there they have been together ever since. They just have a quiet, solid relationship from before the movie all throughout it.

They're just amazing, these two. They can do it all!

And yet, the two of them are paying for the crimes of their family. Somehow or another, they must find a way to make a marriage work, in between the politics and the old hurts.

Smaug never came to Erebor's door, but then, there are greater monsters than dragons in this world.

(Anything by Lapin in any fandom you like is gold tbh, but this one in particular has such amazing world building in it. It's unfinished and I don't know how likely it is the author will return to it)

commentary: amazing characterization, lots of BAMF Jason and family feels. also, the writing is very easy to follow and get immersed in!

Bullets, knives, a three story fall, even a fucking crowbar hadn't managed to keep Jason down permanently, but Dick Grayson (and the rest of his "family") was going to kill him with kindness.

commentary: amazing characterization once again, the hurt/comfort is an added bonus, also i just really love how the author writes Jason lol

commentary: this was THE jaydick fic anon. one of my most favorite fics that had me crying at 3 am from the angst and feels. this fic pretty much ruined me, but it's okay because it was THAT good! highly recommend reading!

okay this fic is pretty twisted, so please check the tags for all the content warnings! the character study in this fic is amazing, the author made the antagonist very unnerving for a reason, and the overall dark theme had me binge reading this fic in one sitting lmao

commentary:

the body horror was captivating! it's a short read, but you'll definitely think about the fic for a long time! (honestly wished the author made the fic longer)

summary:

Dick might have a bit of a thing for Jason, one of Red Hood's criminal underlings. But he's also already a little in love with Red Hood.

commentary:

i wasn't really into identity porn before, but this author changed my mind with how good this fic is! i highly recommend checking out their other works! the way they also wrote the romance between Jason and Dick is just *chef's kiss*
