Frohe Weihnachten! / Merry Christmas!

Herrschaften und Oukies!

Was war das ein Regen. Die ganze Nacht hindurch hat es geregnet und die Ofa, geflügelte Termiten, kamen aus ihren Bauten. Sie tragen ihre Flügel nur für wenige Stunden, bis sie einen Partner finden und werfen sie dann ab.

Dieses Schauspiel findet immer zu Beginn der Regenzeit statt. Unsere Terrasse und die Wege waren heute Morgen übersäht mit losen Flügeln. 

Die Unterkunft befindet sich auf einer 1.400 Hektar großen privaten Wildfarm, die über 10 verschiedene Großwildarten und eine Reihe kleinerer Säugetiere beherbergt. 

Die Zimmer mit rustikaler Einrichtung sind schon arg in die Jahre gekommen. Michael musste wieder ein paar Kleinigkeiten reparieren. Inzwischen verreist er sowieso nur noch mit seinem eigenen Werkzeugkoffer.

Eigentümer der Lodge ist die Familie Gressmann. Jörn, das aktuelle Familienoberhaupt, war der zweite Teilnehmer der Fernsehsendung "Bauer sucht Frau" aus Namibia, der seine jetzige Frau in eben diesem Format kennen lernte.

Das RTL Fernsehteam hat damals auch in der Lodge gedreht und übernachtet.

Jörn selbst leitet das abgelegene Buschmann Camp und bietet Gästen die Möglichkeit, am Leben der Buschmänner (San) teilzunehmen. Jörn Gressmann hat eine ganz besondere Bindung zu den Buschmännern.

Er ist mit ihnen auf der Farm seiner Eltern groß geworden und hat als kleiner Junge viel Zeit mit den Kindern der Angestellten verbracht. Auf diese Weise spricht er fließend ihre Sprache und konnte „Ju/Hansi San“ in den ersten Jahren fast besser als seine Muttersprache Deutsch.

Auf seine Weise unterstützt er diese, wo er kann, und hat vor ein paar Jahren einen Kindergarten direkt im Camp eingerichtet, in dem die Jüngsten Englisch und weitere wichtige Bildungsgrundlagen erlernen.

Die Fiume Lodge bzw, Gästefarm wird zur Zeit von Helmuth und seiner Frau verwaltet. Das Team, das die beiden unterstützt, macht auf uns einen gut ausgebildeten Eindruck.

Mit Helmuth und Frank sind wir am Nachmittag zu einer Farmtour aufgebrochen.

Wir fahren verschiedene Futterstellen an und verteilen dort Pellets, denn auch hier müssen die Tiere auf Grund der Trockenheit zugefüttert werden.

Natürlich werden bei dieser Rundfahrt auch die Niederschlagsmesser kontrolliert: ganze 29 mm Regen gab es in der letzten Nacht. Das ist doch super!

Die Fluchtdistanz der Antilopen zeigt uns sofort, dass die vorhandenen Hochsitze nicht nur zur Zierde hier herum stehen. Weg sind die Eland Antilopen ...

Auch die Wasserstellen werden bei dieser Rundfahrt kontrolliert. Teilweise konnten die Tränken die Regenmassen der vergangenen Nacht gar nicht mehr aufnehmen.

An einer Stelle halten wir und zelebrieren den obligatorischen Sundowner in Form von Snacks und natürlich Gin-Tonic.

Es ergeben sich ganz gute Gespräche, aber so richtig warm werden wir irgendwie mit unseren Gastgebern nicht.

Der Funke springt für uns alle 3 auf der Fiume Farm nicht über. Vielleicht sind wir da schon zu anspruchsvoll? Ich persönlich habe immer so meine Schwierigkeiten mit Farmersfrauen, die viel Schmuck tragen und top gestylt in einem 100.000 Euro teuren Mercedes zum Einkaufen fahren.

Gegen 19.30 Uhr sind wir wieder zurück an den Hauptgebäuden. Insgesamt dauerte die Tour so um die 2 1/2 Stunden.

Wir gehen sofort ins Restaurant, da wir die Mädels nicht noch unnötig lange auf uns warten lassen möchten.

Als Vorspeise gibt es einen gegrillten Melonensalat mit Fetakäse.

Als Zwischengang wird ein Petersiliensorbet gereicht.

Als Hauptgang gibt es Hähnchenbrust gefüllt mit Spinat und schöner Kruste.

Den Abschluss bildet ein Apfelstrudel mit Schokoladeneis. Die Gerichte, die das Küchenteam zauberte empfanden wir als durchaus gelungen und sehr schmackhaft.

Jetzt heißt es wieder packen für uns, denn morgen geht es an den Okavango.

Alpacas! Those Eyes! Those Lashes! That Yarn!

Yes, alpacas, what not to like? I visit alpaca farms whenever I travel so, I took a tour at Cotton Creek Farm which is in northern Michigan, a bit south of Traverse City. For $10 you get a tour through various enclosures, with a bag of chow, meeting the alpacas of different ages. We ended up in the enclosure with the mothers and this spring's new babies. Not sure if there is anything cuter than a tiny alpaca with great big eyes coming up to you and nibbling on your sleeve. They are both skittish and curious, so the key is to be quiet and still and see if they will come up to you.

Click through and you can see all the animals and read their bios. Cotton Creek also sells yarn from its animals, with the animal's name on the label, of course, and you can buy it online. I got several skeins in cream, cinnamon, and fawn, and am pondering a wrap of some kind.
