#File structure

Zoomer here, and I do indeed have questions about computers- how do filesystems work, and why should we care (I know we should, but I'm not exactly sure why)?
So why should we care?
You need to know where your own files are.
I've got a file on a flash drive that's been handed to me, or an archival data CD/DVD/Bluray, or maybe it's a big heavy USB external hard drive and I need to make a copy of it on my local machine.
Do I know how to navigate to that portable media device within a file browser?
Where will I put that data on my permanent media (e.i. my laptop's hard drive)?
How will I be able to reliably find it again?
We'll cover more of the Why and How, but this will take some time, and a few addendum posts because I'm actively hitting the character limit and I've rewritten this like 3 times.
Let's start with file structure
Files live on drives: big heavy spinning rust hard drives, solid state m.2 drives, USB flash drives, network drives, etc. Think of a drive like a filing cabinet in an office.
You open the drawer, it's full of folders. Maybe some folders have other folders inside of them. The folders have a little tab with a name on it showing what's supposed to be in them. You look inside the folders, there are files. Pieces of paper. Documents you wrote. Photographs. Copies of pages from a book. Maybe even the instruction booklet that came with your dishwasher.
We have all of that here, but virtualized! Here's a helpful tree structure that Windows provides to navigate through all of that. In the case of Windows, it's called Explorer. On OSX MacOS, the equivalent is called Finder.
Tumblr media
I don't have to know where exactly everything is, but I have a good idea where thing *should* based on how I organize them. Even things that don't always expose the file structure to you have one (like my cellphone on the right). I regularly manually copy my files off of my cellphone by going to the Camera folder so I can sift through them on a much bigger screen and find the best ones to share. There are other reasons I prefer to do it that way, but we won't go into that here. Some people prefer to drag and drop, but that doesn't always work the same between operating systems. I prefer cut and paste.
Standby for Part 2!

Clip studio paint troubleshooting help
TL; DR: how do I merge materials folders, or how do I import materials from file (not thru asset store)? CSP 3.04
I have ended up with several different materials folders via weird computer shenanigans with different but overlapping content. I would like to merge them all into a single database. Last time I tried that, I simply copyied one set of folders into the other. Because of the weird file structure of the materials folder (the weird numbered thing) Windows did not go "oh this is a duplicate file, do you want to overwrite it?" so that resulted in multiple identical copies of many assets. Going through and deleting them by hand is difficult, but I did it eventually. Unfortunately my old computer then died and I got this new one which I had to use without downloading my old files for the first couple of weeks, which means that now I have the same problem again of needing to merge materials folders.
Is there a way to do this in a way that works? Some sites claim that CSP, perhaps an old version, is able to "import materials" from a file without going through the assets store, which would be ideal, but I cannot seem to find the way to do that. I have also seen mentions of "exporting" a material and some people offer downloads of assets through a browser instead of an asset store download, so that all implies it is possible.
What say you, internet?

File Structure
Tumblr media
I usually work with this type of file structure in all my classes unless a particular class involves more things like analog notes/projects.
This type of structure helps me keep track of the projects and the different phases it goes through making it easier to access it in case I need to make changes or just see the file again.

the main reason why it's crazy is because alex has cited twin peaks As inspiration and you could reason that it's mostly surface level/vibes-based but I don't know.... Idk.....

Scarlet Hollow decision tree
People occasionally ask to see a decision tree for Scarlet Hollow, so a while back I put one together for episodes 1-4! It’s not comprehensive, as most scenes at this point have at least some variation due to any number of tracked variables, but it accounts for most of the really major deviations.
For those who don’t want spoilers but would like to hear about how we kinda structure the game: I like to talk about it as more of a braid than a tree, which is not a new concept or anything, but I feel like it helps other narrative designers understand how to limit the absolute vastness that you can get with branching structures. The narrative branches off at decision nodes, but instead of continuing down significantly different routes, it comes back together at key moments. So there’s a single narrative throughline to the game-- events unfold in the town and you witness them in some capacity, but your perspective on them, who you’re with, the options available to you, all these are impacted by other choices you’ve made along the way, including the character traits you chose at the start of the game.
It’s not necessarily easier than doing routes, since it means Tony and I have to keep track of a ridiculous number of little variations including one-off dialogue choices players have made AND steering players to the important narrative moments can be tricky, but I think it makes for an interesting player experience! People get so excited when, say, a line at the end of Episode 4 calls back to something they said when they first met Tabitha at the beginning of Episode 1.
ANYWAY, HUGE SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT, do not proceed if you don’t want to know about basically everything that’s currently in the game!

Things start to get a little hard to read from here on out....

Episode four had to be broken into four images and looks like spaghetti

I’ll make another one of these for Episode 5 after it comes out sometime next year! (I know that’s a bit of a wait but it’ll be worth it >:D)

Cloudless, unveiled (8)
Marta cannot stop smiling, and it has gained her a more informal goodbye than she is used to, minutes ago at the bakery, when she stepped back out into the street with a fragrant bag of bread and pastries that is still a little warm to her touch.
Fina is still asleep and Marta has gotten up, quietly, to buy them breakfast, and that smile refuses to fade. Last night has left her disarmed, and the layers she keeps between herself and the world outside have not yet assembled back fully. She still has an hour or two before she will have to draw on them again, so for now, she welcomes the April morning brushing with a bit of chill against her legs in this dress, the loud chatter of a bunch of city sparrows rearing up from a stretch of hedge as she passes.
She seems to listen more easily, still unlocked to sensation. Every sound leaves an imprint onto her, blending with the lingering tendrils of Fina’s voice against her ear, last night, and with the voices at the opera, before that.

Going to college as a nontraditional student with an office job is kinda funny bc now when a professor messes things up in a way that fucks me over instead of being like "omg this authority figure is so unfair 😭" I'm approaching it more with the vibe of like "if Karen from Accounting doesn't fix this mistake that's hindering my work after my third passive aggressive email I'm going to CC her boss"
#my professor has multiple things messed up on her online course that are actively preventing me from preparing for the midterm exam#1. the notes she uploaded for last weeks lesson are in an unviewable format (its a .bin file? she converted an image to binary code??)#2. she hasnt uploaded the content for this weeks lesson yet. and that content is going to be tested on the midterm#3. both her syllabus and the review guide she uploaded mention a pre-midterm test thats worth 2% of our grade#and i think is supposed to help us prepare. but she hasnt uploaded that or even mentioned it at all?#4. the exam itself isnt in blackboard yet. which wouldnt really be a cause for alarm if it was any other professor#i would just assume they were probably waiting to upload it until the day of the exam#but given everything else shes messed up so far im worried she messed something up with that too and it wont get uploaded at all#so. she said in the syllabus that we should message her directly in blackboard with any questions and she'll respond within 48 hours#but my first message was sent on friday. it is now tuesday#she said to send a follow up if she doesnt respond within 48 hours. i sent a follow up yesterday morning and she still hasnt responded#and im not going to wait another 48 hours when the exam is in 3 days and she still hasnt even uploaded the final lesson that will be on it#so. shes getting a text from me at the phone number she listed now like#if she doesnt respond to that within a few hours then i might call#and if she doesnt respond to THAT then im going to put it in an email and CC the head of her department or smth#bc we NEED to be able to prepare for the midterm. its THIS WEEK. some people are actually scheduled only TWO days from now#its already bullshit that shes including this lesson on the midterm when the due date for it is AFTER the exam#but then shes also THREE DAYS LATE (so far) uploading it??#AND she hasnt uploaded the pre-test or even mentioned it at all???#rambling#this professor is gonna get a BAD review from me man#its already bad enough that her online course is structured so poorly that its hard to even tell what we should be doing each week#and now this shit

Communication is so important to Javi, like Storm PAR jokingly calls him a helicopter dad because he has this almost-constant need to know where every person is at every moment in time (and maybe because he dabbled with helicopters in the military). Like every truck and most other pieces of their equipment have their own trackers connected to an app on their phones. And then before they separate for the night they have a brief meeting to go over the game plan for the next day, and then he’ll send a follow up text before going to bed that summarizes that discussion.
Javi also made sure that every member of his crew had wireless ear pieces to ensure that they stayed in constant communication with one another. It didn’t matter if you were in the same vehicle as someone else, it was a rule that every person must have their own in case anyone was separated. This meant when they inevitably leave the confines of their vehicles to deploy the radar equipment (or to seek shelter) they could still communicate.

The tiny little hiccups I've had switching to Linux have been almost charming compared to the stupidity of Windows. What do you mean my Bluetooth just... works now? No second long lag? All it took for me to map my stylus to my tablet was three lines in the terminal? Games run better? I've switched back to my Windows boot once since the install and that was to check a setting, at this rate I may as well uninstall it.

Picked up the game again to finally dip my toes into the recent dlc. And i forget how much of a cluster fuck my 1st savefile is. Not that it's in a bad state, but it's just too much happening, too much everywhere. And i got nowhere to put new stuff. And it made me very stressed and angy.
Also pls..... the Bars....

I was going through the files looking for the Visages masks and found a folder called 'Masks'. That must be it, I thought! WRONG. It was full of these guys.
No clue what these were for -- I'm wondering if they didn't make it into the game? One is the mask worn by Goblu (it was in the texture files) and one is the mask worn by Reacher, but the rest look new to me, although a bit familiar. A few remind me of Esquie.
I wonder if Monoco's shape-changing shtick originally used masks? They were laid out pretty much like this once I imported them all, so I think they were meant to be displayed this way. They look really cool, though!
