Hiii Rye, how does your tagging system work? I'm guessing it has something to do with Toki Pona but I'm curious
That's a great question, let's go through some of the tags I use in this blog.
Also. This will be a bit long.
GENERAL TAGS
The most well known and used is ofc, #ryeblog ,which is given to any post I reblog. It comes from "rye" and "reblog". Another interesting fact is that when I reblog many posts in a short time, I call it a "ryeblitz" (ryeblog + blitz [German for lightning).
For original text-based posts of mine, the tag is #handful of grains, which comes from the fact that I am Rye; but also because originally there was a tag called #sack of grain that never got used and was intended for large text-based original posts.
Images and videos get #pics and flicks, except if these are art. If the art was posted by the artist it gets #art of them and if it's someone else's art it gets #art of those.
#letters to rye will be the tag used in this post, as it is for the asks I answer.
#poll #tag game #ask game #quiz Self explanatory.
Prev tags get marked with #Previously on Tags: and then I mark my answer to those with a #My reaction to that information:
MEDIA TAGS
Quite self explanatory, if I'm reblogging some cute art from blorbo from my shows, tags would look like
#ryeblog #art of them #my shows
Must be understood that this system isn't 100% reliable. If I don't have a tag for a media because I have no knowledge of it or even interest; it won't get a tagged or have a tag.
Imagine this, a fanart featuring characters from the shows A, B, C and D. I only have tags for B and C. Only appliable media tags are #B and #C.
This is why you can find stuff like few Chainsaw Man fanart in my blog, but a tag for Chainsaw Man doesn't actually exist. When I reblog Out of Touch Thursday, I don't do it with a tag for the Lucky Star anime. Characters don't have tags in my system.
I can't give a full list of all of them, but here's the top 45 as of now:
#moomin
#deltarune
#sparklecare
#toh (The Owl House)
#sonic the hedgehog
#dhmis (Don't Hug Me I'm Scared)
#su (Steven Universe)
#tf2 (Team Fortress 2)
#pokemon
#lwa (Little Witch Academia)
#hatsune miku [Ok. It's ironic that this is a character. There's no tag for Vocaloid btw. Cuz of my lack of knowledge on the matter.]
#mlp
#minecraft
#fnaf (Five Nights at Freddy)
#undertale
#bluey
#danganronpa
#homestuck
#breaking bad
#cunk on earth [It applies to other media with Philomena Cunk like "Cunk on Britain"]
#neil cicierega [Technically a person. Applies to all his work. Forgot to mention, artists and bands also fit in this category.]
#tove jansson [Again. A person. This tag exists to not tag her with #moomin in non-Moomin issues.]
#talking heads [Again, a band.]
#jerma985 [A person.]
#spiderman
#undertale 2 [Yep. That's a game. A parody fan-game RPG of Undertale. This tag isn't for Deltarune. I found many people tagging Deltarune as Undertale 2.]
#animal crossing
#hetalia
#loz (Legend of Zelda)
#adventure time
#epithet erased
#lemon demon [Again, an artist; also not everything Neil Cicierega does is for Lemon Demon. This is why this tag is also a thing.]
#omori
#mcyt (Minecraft YouTuber)
#tally hall [A band.]
#barbie
#doctor who
#ghibli
#tetris
#touhou
#ytp
#ella minnow pea
#ena
#they might be giants [A band.]
#alexkansas [Applies to all his work. Currently MISTERMANTICORE]
NOT THAT SPECIFIC TAGS. THEY ARE THE SAME LEVEL AS THESE
#the past for the stuff about the past. The limit of how old has to be the thing to be tagged with this is 20 years.
#language is for everything linguistics, scripts, phonetics, anything of that matter and related. This tag isn't for swear swords, those bitches don't fucking get tagged.
#chemistry #geology #toki pona [An artistic constructed language by Sonja Lang] #handwriting #cursive #flags [Because vexillology was too long and I never knew if I was writing it right] #maps #biology #philately [#stamps is out of use] #reaction image ,etc.
MEET THE SPECIFICS
These tags exists because I have decided to.
TAGS THAT USE TOKI PONA WORDS
#pilin This Toki Pona word describes many concepts, like feelings, emotions, the heart in its both physical and emotional form. However, in this blog, this tag shall only be used for the heart (organ or not) and heart shapes and heart-shaped things.
#kili This word describes fruits and vegetables, all the edible parts of a plant. I also use this tag for stuff made with kili, like French fries, jam and jelly or milkshakes.
#mun This word doesn't just describe the Moon but also all night-sky objects and space objects. This tag replaced the now abandoned #astronomy as stuff like a blanket with sun and moon motifs or the fanart of a furry on the Moon aren't quite related with the science of space.
#kala This word describes fish and all the aquatic animals. Axolotls, whales, jellyfish and crabs may not be fish, but they sure are kala.
#pan As a Spanish speaker you probably have realised this word is for bread. That's right, it's for grains and all grain products. Stuff that is pan but not bread: tortilla, beer, peanut butter, crackers, communion wafers, tejuino. This tag isn't for pansexuality, Tumblr just colours it like that.
#pipi The word for insects and all the little bugs and crechurs, so it includes stuff like spiders and worms.
#waso The word for birds, flying animals and winged animals.
#soko The word for fungi. This tag replaced #mycology.
#akesi The word for reptiles. This tag isn't used for "non-cute animals" as the original meaning of the word expressed and was corrected in 2021.
#kijetesantakalu The word to describe procyonids and musteloids, like ferrets, racoons and tanukis. For the non-Toki Pona speakers. The reason why this word is long and very specific is because it's an April Fools joke that just got too popular.
#in front of them sensors I wears glasses, I like characters that wear them too. So this tag is for that. It also applies to stuff like sport/lab goggles, sunglasses and other eyewear.
#the florist's For flowers. The name is as in a flower shop, just like the butcher's or the chemist's.
#city made of light For photographs of, or art depicting urban light during the night. The night scared us, so we killed it; some beautiful examples of this massacre to our health are Times Square, the Las Vegas strip or Hong Kong neon capital of the East.
#KÖT For cats! The word "köt" isn't for cat in any language btw.
#i do the squeaking For ratas and mice. Tag name based on that one post with the mousegirl house wife.
I don't tag furries for some reasons: First is, what is a furry? Are Moomins furry? Are Sonic characters furries? Furries' opinion on what is furry and what is not a large broad spectrum of thoughts. Second is so people don't block furries from me. If you don't wanna see furries, go and try and see how many tags you need to block to see none, and you will still see some cuz not everyone tags. Also, furries don't get tagged any of the animal tags.
#boyfriendposting Those posts that are like "yeah, sorry that your boyfriend..."
#fake posts Those posts that are made to look like many and have some theme.
#fauxnetics People trying to spell pronunciation using non-standarized methods like the IPA, usually just causing more confusion. Example: "How do you pronounce Chara? Car-uh, Care-uh, Chair-uh or Char-uh?"
#illinois chess Games (doesn't have to be chess, but if chess, funky non-standard chess) [usually board games] with strange setting or rules, impossible to understand. Tag named after this thing from 20020.
#present as the past from the future Meme/joke posts describing modern/contemporany history or the current world as how we speak of the past. Example: "Cowboys were a sort of itinerant warrior class common in Meiji-era Texas."
#rainbow #emoji #ethanol [Alcohol found in drinking alcoholic beverages] #radiation #tbh creature #tea #picrew #9/11 #plush #tell-o-phone [Telephones] #tell-o-vision [Televisions] #jesus #gastronintestinal issues #isobutyl propionic acid [Ibuprofen] #rain #butane [Alkane of four carbon atoms, fuel in cigarette lighters] #loss ['Loss' by Tim Buckley for Ctrl+Alt+Del] #snow #blåhaj #R-Ë-PLANE [Airplanes and similar aircraft.] #ZUG [German for trains. Anything on rails.] #mpreg [Male pregnancy] #cool S [This one.] #aspirin ,etc, probably there are more.
I hope this ask has answered your doubts. There's probably more tags out there.
Now for an example.
Example.
Tag-relevant details: A Sparklecare Cometcare AU fan art piece made and posted by Edward featuring Barry Ill and Uni Sock Cornelius in a night picnic. Uni is wearing her rose-tinted goggles, holding a milkshake with a cherry on top, there's another one present next to Barry. Barry is holding a sandwich with visible lettuce and tomato, there's another one next to Uni. The picnic blanket has the colours of the rainbow. There are stars and hearts around them, the picnic case also had a heart detail. On the field there are white small flowers.
Tags: #ryeblog #art of them #sparklecare #in front of them sensors #kili #pan #rainbow #pilin #mun #the florist's
The tags after the Sparklecare one could be in any order.
And this is an ideal case. As I have stated, I'm not 100% reliable and this sytem isn't either. I sometimes miss some tags.
As a final detail. Comments about the post will go after all of these tags and will have proper sentence capitalization and punctuation. This is the hierarchy the tags go which I sometimes miss too.

Geotastic Games - Unlocking English Language Learning with Technology
Tumblr media
Learning English has become an essential skill for effective communication in today's increasingly globalized world. Fortunately, advancements in technology have opened up new avenues for learners to improve their proficiency in the language. One such innovative approach is the use of geotastic tools, which integrate geographical information to enhance the learning experience. In this blog, we will explore a variety of geotastic tools that can make learning English an engaging and immersive adventure.
This free online game is an exciting activity for online classes, allowing you and your students to explore the world. Geotastic drops you somewhere in the world, and then, using the street view function or the satellite view on Google maps, you have to look around and discover where you are using clues like flags, monuments, languages and number plates. There’s a multiplayer mode, so students can play in teams.
How to use Geotastic in class?
Geotastic is a great way to give students practice in using different language concepts related to a place. For example, you could use Geotastic to teach town and city vocabulary (monument, pavement, skyscraper) or directions (turn left at the end of the road, go straight at the crossing).
You could also use the game to help your students practise modals of speculation (it could be, it can’t be, it must be.) And the game itself will help your students to build their problem-solving and critical thinking.

Geography This exploration is for all ages, as the colored smilies show. You can do the Country Fact Sheet with your whole family together! 1st thru 4th grades 5th thru 8th grades 9th thru 12th grades Western Europe is the first unit in the Mapping Our World geography course from Layers of Learning. The Country Fact Sheet is a geography printable that can be used with any of the geography units from Years 2, 3, and 4. Those years focus on learning about a variety of countries from all around the world. It s first introduced in the Western Europe unit. Layers of Learning has hands-on explorations, maps, printables, and lots more activities in every unit of this family-friendly curriculum. Learn more about Layers of Learning.Years 2 and 3 of Layers of Learning are a survey of countries around the world, and we like to keep a written record of a lot of what we learn. The Country Fact Sheet is just one of the ways we record what we’re discovering in our geography time. It’s a place to record the information they are reading from our country studies all on one page.Step 1: Library ResearchBefore you begin exploring, read a book or two about the country you’re studying in a library book or in an atlas. Here are some suggestions of atlases we like to keep on hand for our country studies. Your library likely has atlases you can borrow too. The colored smilies above each book tell you what age level they’re recommended for.As Amazon affiliates, the recommended books and products below kick back a tiny percentage of your purchase to us. It doesn’t affect your cost and it helps us run our website. We thank you!DK First Atlasby Anita GaneriChildren’s Illustrated Atlasby DKStudent Atlasby DKStep 2: Country Fact SheetHere is a printable country fact sheet if you want to try this with your kids.   A printable country fact sheet to fill in.Search the internet, look in an atlas, or go to the library for books, then spend an hour reading and writing down fascinating facts, drawing maps and flags, and just satisfying your curiosity about countries.  Fill out the country fact sheet as you go, then fill the backside of the page with more interesting things you discovered along the way.  As you work, discuss the similarities and differences between the country you live in and the country you’re studying.  If possible, find some stories from the countries too.  Many countries have traditional folk tales, fairy tales, myths, or legends that kids love to listen to.  Famous art and music is another fun focus.  We have our television attached to our computer with an HDMI cable (making our big screen function as a computer monitor so everyone can see it well), so I pull up famous art from the country using a simple internet search.  Sometimes we watch YouTube videos of traditional dance or music, travelogues, or other informational videos too.By the end of the week, you will have all learned about the country by researching, discussing, and writing.  It’s a fun way to bring other cultures and places a little closer to home.Step 3: Show What You KnowRead the interesting facts to each other, presentation-style. See if some of the things you found out overlap. Did you find any information or fun facts that no one else in your family did?Additional LayersAdditional Layers are extra activities you can do or tangents you can take off on. You will find them in the sidebars of each Layers of Learning unit. They are optional, so just choose what interests you.Writer’s WorkshopWrite a simulated letter, imagining you are visiting the country you studied and writing home about the things you are doing and seeing.Additional LayerMake a traditional recipe from the country you are learning about. We love to cook food from the country we are studying and then give our presentations at the dinner table.ExpeditionWhen we can’t go visit a country in person, we go visit the Layers of Learning YouTube playlists and get a little peek through video of what it’s like there.Try family-style homeschooling now with free samples of four Layers of Learning units when you subscribe. Okay take this in good faith and not me being an asshole or weird I just wanna know, as someone who’s been around clone wars people but not really in the fandom much. What’s the logic behind “no clonecest.” Do you read the clones as literal related to each other born of the same father brothers? If there’s…6-10k+ of them, would that not make them their own ethnicity? What about it pushes it into “-cest” basically. It’s like that one post, “would you fuck your clone? quiz.” What makes it such a red flag as opposed to like. Amidala.
well, there's millions of them and I consider them to be family the way that adopted siblings, step siblings, brothers-by-choice/irl found families--and yes, blood relations--are all valid forms of family. "Brother" historically, fictionally, etc hasn't--and can't--mean just blood relation, because that puts every other family orientation into a second class status. It's like they think family only counts as "real" family if they're related by genes and no other way; anything else is semi/less valid and a pale imitation of what a "real" family constitutes.
They're not their own ethnicity? What do you mean by that please lol
If adopted siblings are written to be in a relationship, it's incest. If step siblings are in a relationship, it's incest. Not "it's not technically--" it is (and even if by technicality something isn't X, by another technicality it is X). Neither of these maps perfectly onto the clones, but they clearly use "brother" first as familial identification and simultaneously as "brothers-in-arms" military speak. But lets not forget that Rex said to Cut "my family is elsewhere". If he didn't mean family the way you and I understand it, the writers would have made him say something else. The clones basically exclusively call each other "brother"--not friend or buddy or "that guy" but brother the way you or I would call our siblings (if you have any) brother regardless of our personal relationship with them (Slick clearly hurt his brothers and still referred to them as such, as did Cody and Rex in the same conversation)
And it's not quite similar to the clone thing you mention, because it's clear by now that not all clones have the exact same DNA. We've seen clones with mutations that aren't TBB that would require their DNA to be slightly different (ie 99). Fives also says, "look around--same heart, same blood". They understand themselves to be genetically/DNA related in some way. They're not clones of each other, they're clones of one guy and because they have no one else, they've made a family of themselves.
Anidala is not incest--it's got problems for sure, but it's not incest. Clonecest is. People who ship clonecest have an incest fetish. I don't like incest fetishes, I think they're incredibly bizarre and disturbing, and so I don't want those shippers interacting with me or my posts/content.

You Wouldn’t Steal a Movie
for @dukexietyweek‘s day 3 prompt of Pirates, all that’s coming into my head is that antipiracy add on videos. Let’s run with it
Summary: Virgil wanted to be a pirate when he grew up but pirating films and music doesn’t quite fill his dreams. After a small comment about that Remus suddenly wants to pirate a pirate ship and by hell he’ll achieve it.
Warnings: theft, piracy, sexual comments, pining, if there’s anymore let me know
/\/\/\/\/\
Virgil had met Remus when they were in school. They’d been sat next to each other on the first day of class when their teacher decided that the best way to have a successful start was some conversation games. Really they’d just been given quiz sheets of questions to ask each other and had to go through them.
Now Virgil could only remember one of the questions he had been asked since each sheet had held a different selection of questions. Remus had asked what he wanted to be when he grew up and he’d insisted that he’d become a pirate.
Looking back at that excitement and all the games Remus used that sentence to pull him into, Virgil really wished that had just stayed a dream. Instead he was headbutting the desk next to his computer, praying it would play along sometime this decade.
“You know I don’t actually need any more stock this week. What on earth are you attacking the poor desk over.” Remus called, sprawled over their couch upside down. He had been the one to get them into movie and music piracy, opening a market stand up after Virgil worked out the easiest ways to get the movies downloaded.
Remus had insisted it was just like the pirates, only instead of the oceans their seas were websites and movie theaters, and the swordfights were replaced with viruses Virgil had been creating and destroying since he first hacked into their schools mainframe.
The glare Virgil turned to him with showed that the five-hundreth realisation that it wasn’t was about to explode and the popcorn he kept behind the cushions was all prepared to watch it.
Seeing the popcorn get brought out though had Virgil silently talking himself through the breathing exercises most often used to help his anxiety. They’d always doubled to prevent him from blowing up at Remus if he remembered in time. When he spoke all he said was, “When I said I wanted to be a pirate, I was expecting more ships than this.”
“Ooooh, Do you wanna try pirating a pirate ship? There’s gotta be a way to download one I swear or the modern world has failed me!” Remus bounced over, the idea clearly racing through his brain as with a few clicks he managed to reset and finish the download Virgil had been staring at trying to resolve the issues from it for an hour.
“You could have done that earlier. And wouldn’t we at least need like a 3D printer or something if we’re going to download a pirate ship.” Virgil cautioned, already tempted to see just what had appeared in Remus’s room recently.
That room was one Virgil usually tried to ignore given how many things would be brought home as market bargains only to get transformed into something completely different. The last time he’d looked through the door there was what seemed to be three rugs slowly getting cut and sewn into frankenstiens monster.
Remus was shaking his head already. “Or I could get the location for nearby ship owners, visit claiming to be an elite caterer or something, steal or copy all the keys in their house then try each of them until we’ve got the boat for ourselves.”
“And how are you going to avoid getting arrested while doing all of that? Or store a boat while you turn it into a pirate ship?” Virgil had to ask about the flaws in the plan, not caring about the cover story since Remus was actually qualified in catering after getting bored one summer while Virgil was in college.
The concerns were easily waved off, “I found this cave, really big except for the entrance although a ship could get into it at low tide. That would be a perfect place for our pirate ship. Also it’s easy enough to convince rich guys to show off their wealth with parties on their boats.
“Hang about they’d probably actually give me keys to the boat for the duration of that party. If I just made a side trip to Janus’s shop I could have the copy made and actually get paid for the catering job at the same time!” Remus cheered, nodding at Virgil as though waiting for any other concerns.
Virgil couldn’t be bothered to go into plotting with his best friend after so long arguing with his computer though so decided to just walk away instead. Hopefully this would all get forgotten by the morning.
/\/\
It wasn’t forgotten and the tuxedo Remus had somehow gained while Virgil slept had a lot of thoughts Virgil would never admit to running through his head. “Please tell me your brother has called about a family event and that’s why you’re dressed up?”
“Are you asking to get dolled up too because I have some scandalous outfits you could try on?” Remus smirked, doing a spin. The bow with a wink was enough to increase the blush on Virgil’s cheeks to a vibrant red reaching his ears.
“Never.”
Luckily Remus had already tired of that bit of teasing, grabbing a folder from the desk. “I’ve got to visit this lawyers family. He seemed rather interested when I reached out last night as a catering start up one of his colleagues is funding. I’ll have your pirate ship in no time, little Incubus.”
Virigl could only groan as Remus left, wondering just how long his blushing could be ignored for. Part of his mind wanted to worry about what remus was getting them into but he’d know the other for too long to seriously think he’d be able to change anything now.
/\/\
The next month passed quietly so far as Virgil was concerned. He carried on getting stock made for Remus’s market and tried to remain speaking whenever Remus disappeared in his tuxedo, without getting flustered.
He did notice when the tuxedo disappeared from the outfits Remus wore regularly after a month. There had been nothing more said about getting a pirate ship, but Virgil had known that was still what his room-mate had been disappearing to try and manage, and he’d thought it was going well.
There had even been a night of celebration with leftovers from what Virgil had thought would be one of the final events Remus did for the pirate ship. They’d gone out to the clifftops over the ocean, curled up either side of a skull and crossbones blanket and laughed about all the monsters they could find at sea or on land.
Instead of being dragged out to a ship shortly afterwards though Virgil just noticed that Remus was disappearing off in his comfy clothes, sometimes with a giant rucksack that would return empty. For all the random bouts of flirting between them still happened Virgil became certain that Remus had forgotten about getting a pirate ship in favour of some fling although that didn’t explain why the details of it hadn’t been shared.
Trying to deny any hurt at that possibility Virgil scolded himself that they’d never been together for him to get hurt over anything in the first place. It didn’t work very well.

Almost three months since Remus had decided to give Virgil his wish of having a pirate ship and he was finally ready to share everything he’d managed to do.
Virgil had been right about the things he’d need to do to remain unsuspected by the law as well as actually come out of it with the boat. He’d just forgotten that any ship Remus was able to steal through that method wasn’t going to look like a pirate ship at all without a lot of work.
Remus had been determined though. If he was going to make his loves dreams come true again then the ship had to be a pirate ship before Virgil could ever see it. Perhaps this time he’d actually be understood when he told Virgil he loved him even.
He’d noticed the looks when wearing the tuxedo and all the blushes Virgil had been trying to hide for years, but honestly that outfit was never one he liked to wear. Remus had even registered some reluctance or upset from Virgil recently although he was a bit more confused about it and just hoped that whatever thoughts were upsetting him could be worked through soon enough.
For now though he’d finally tied the last flag to the mast and was ready to bring Virgil to their very own pirate ship. The next afternoon sounded like the perfect time.

Virgil wasn’t quite sure what to think about being corralled out to the car after having thigh high leather boots thrown at him along with a loose shirt and black leather jacket. Remus had already been decked out in mostly leather when he barged back into their apartment, and had even added beads and braids to his hair alongside the usual excess of jewelery he’d wear.
He wasn’t about to refuse a hyperactive and affectionate Remus though, especially not one practically pulling his arm out with his bouncing as they headed off. “Come on, Black Hole, I wanna show you my best biggest surprise ever, and I’m not talking about the monster in my pants, though I’m happy to show you that too.”
“Where are you even taking me? I thought you had a fling going on that was taking up oh so much of your time.” Virgil tried to demand, instead snickering as he spoke until he registered the words had stilled Remus’s enthusiasm.
In fact Remus had stilled so much he wasn’t getting into the car.
“O-okay, what did I say to upset you? We can get in the car now.” Virgil stuttered out after being stared at for almost a minute, never hearing the car doors unlock.
“Only fling I’ve been having is with my hand.” Eventually Remus blinked out of the stunned realisation of how Virgil had thought he’d been spending his days. “Literally you’re the sewer map that guides me and thought I’d do anything like that without at least mentioning it to you? Virgil I freaking have been exhausting myself constantly for your surprise. There’s no action in the world that could take me away from your side, not even if you said the kraken and mothman wanted to invite me for a threesome!”
The words almost froze Virgil in turn but he still reacted enough to climb into the car as soon as it was unlocked. “So..” he tried to ask about the rant but was cut off by a finger on his lips.
“Let’s get to your surprise and then we’ll talk there.” Remus insisted, turning music on to further prevent any conversation.

After being coaxed through a tiny cavern, constantly climbing downwards with a rope he was sure Remus had pinned to the edge himself to act as a safety tool Virgil had begun to remember what this could be. That didn’t do anything to prepare him for when the single rope turned into a rope ladder dropping down through the masts of a pirate ship.
“Woah!” There were no other words for him to say. It looked excatly like the pirate ships from the books and films he’d adored as a child. Virgil could only spin around taking in all the details and additions he was sure Remus must had made himself somehow.
“Captain Sanders, I believe you are missing your hat.” Remus said, breaking through his awed staring and holding out a captains hat, completed with a large purple feather.
“You got me a full on pirate ship.” Virgil whispered, still shocked.
Remus just nodded, “Well it at least looks like that while above deck. Downstairs it’s a lot more of how I felt like decorating in the moment. The kitchen is awesome though so I’m cooking us dinner tonight.”
“You said you’ve been exhausting yourself to do this for me?” Virgil asked, entirely believing that now, but not quite able to comprehend anybody doing such a momentous task all for him.
“Captain, do you realise just how much you could ask for and I’d do everything I could to get it for you? I’m driven to insanity for you and will thank you for it in every way I can think of.” Remus raved, barely even realising how close his steps brought them until he was looking down at Virgil.
Virgil swallowed, shaking his head, “Does that list include kissing me?” He spoke.
There were no words after that as their lips finally met, aboard a pirate ship in a hidden cavern.

Chapter 2: First Week of School
The next morning should’ve been absolute chaos, but it went surprisingly smooth. Emile woke first, getting ready for the day before heading downstairs to make breakfast for the boys. Patton was the next to rise, jumping in the shower as Virgil came downstairs to eat. The two switched places when Patton was done.
Once everyone was ready to go, the three of them made sure they had everything before jumping in the car.
“Are you guys excited for your first day?”
Virgil shrank in his seat. “You mean our first day in the middle of the school year? When we know absolutely no one and we’re the freaky new kids?”
“V, it’s okay.” Patton reached over and squeezed his hand. “We have a few classes together, and since we’re new we’ll probably sit together. And we share the same lunch.”
“I’ve talked to the principal over email.” Emile glanced at his sons in the back. “He seems like a very nice man. When I mentioned your anxiety disorder he said that he’d let the teachers know.”
Shrinking even further, Virgil threw his hoodie up. After a moment, he bolted upright. “What if they make me take my hood down?”
“They won’t, I made sure of it.” Emile said, his voice stern. “And if any of the teachers give you trouble for it, I want you to tell Mr. Sanders at the earliest opportunity. He understands that it helps you feel less anxious, even if it’s only a little bit.”
They pulled up to the school. There were kids pouring in from the buses, as well as the parking lot. Patton looked excited, but Virgil looked like he’d rather be anywhere else.
“I believe in you.” Emile smiled at him in the mirror.
Steeling his shoulders, Virgil got out of the car. He hunched over immediately, glancing at Patton who was still in the car.
“I’ll keep an eye on him.”
Patton just caught Emile’s nod as he got out of the car. Once the boys were at a safe distance from the curb, he drove off, waving in the mirror.
“We should go find our lockers.” Virgil mumbled, fidgeting with the strings of his hoodie.
The two of them fell into step as they headed down the hallway. A few people turned to look at them, but for the most part people kept to themselves.
The whispers were what worried Virgil. Especially when he couldn’t make out what they were saying.
They’re talking about you.
They think you’re a freak.
You’re not going to fit in here no matter how hard you try.
Luckily, Patton had noticed as soon as Virgil started to sink into his thoughts. He bumped their shoulders together, getting Virgil’s attention.
“What’s your first class?”
Virgil pulled out his schedule. He scanned the first column, glad that the school had been kind enough to give them a map along with their schedules. Not that the building was very big anyway.
“Um...Physical Science.”
“I’ll run into you as you leave then.” Patton said, putting his schedule up to Virgil’s. “I have that one second hour. You’ll have to warn me if there’s a pop quiz.”
Virgil couldn’t help but laugh at that. “Definitely. And you’ll have to warn me about any in English.”
“Of course.”
They reached their lockers, which were side by side, and quickly dumped what they wouldn’t need until after lunch.
“I can walk you to science if you want.” Patton offered.
Virgil shook his head. “I can’t be the freak that needs his brother to walk him to his classes.”
“V…”
“I’ll be okay. Promise.”
Virgil held out his pinky. Patton took it and they shook.
“See you in Algebra!” Patton said as he headed off.
Virgil turned around, heading in the opposite direction. It took him about two minutes to find the science hallway. He walked down the hall, checking the room numbers against his schedule, double checking when he found the right room.
He walked in, heading up to the teacher’s desk immediately. Mrs. Calypso glanced up as he approached, giving him a genuine smile.
“Virgil, right?” She said, keeping her voice low. “I’m Mrs. Calypso. Tho - Principal Sanders talked to me about your anxiety, so I won’t be introducing you to the class.”
Reaching into a drawer, she pulled out a textbook. There was a toucan emblazoned on the cover. “This is our textbook. You guys actually came in at a really good time, most of us are starting new sections today. I don’t think Le - Mr. Anderson is starting anything new, but volleyball is pretty easy to pick up.”
“Thank you.” Virgil took the textbook from her. He shifted his weight. “Um...where should I sit?”
“Oh! Right.” She glanced at a sheet of paper in front of her. “Logan sits by himself, you could join him.”
She pointed to a small boy with perfectly styled red hair. His glasses were a lot different than Patton’s. Patton preferred round glasses, but this boy seemed to prefer the square ones. It made him look smart and slightly intimidating.
As Virgil approached, Logan looked up from his book. “Hello. My name is Logan.”
“Mrs. Calypso told me.” Virgil said, wanting to mentally smack himself immediately. “I’m Virgil.”
Logan nodded, glancing at the clock above Virgil’s head. “I suggest you skim over the chapter. It’ll help you be able to answer Mrs. Calypso’s questions faster.”
“Cool.”
Virgil pulled out his notebook, folder, and a pencil before dropping his backpack at his feet. He started going over the first few paragraphs of the chapter, interrupted when the bell rang.
“Alright, class, if you’d open your books to chapter eight, we can get started.”
Virgil’s first few classes went by fairly quickly. Mrs. Calypso was extremely nice. A few times he’d panicked, thinking she was going to call on him, but she called on Logan instead. He was obviously the smartest kid in the class, something Virgil was grateful for.
When science had ended, Logan had given him a smile before heading out. Virgil bumped into Patton on the way to English, letting him know there wasn’t a pop quiz and getting a giggle in response.
Mx. Stokes was just as cool as Mrs. Calypso was nice. They had a huge non-binary flag up on the wall, informed Virgil of their pronouns right away, and had handed him a small Shakespeare anthology.
“We’re working our way through Hamlet right now.” They’d said as they handed the book over. “If you know the Lion King, you’re good.”
Virgil was glad he wasn’t picked on to read any of the lines, knowing he’d mess it up. Instead he gave his opinion on what a few of the pieces of foreshadowing were, earning a smile and nod from Mx. Stokes in the process.
By the time he reached math, he was a lot calmer. None of the students seemed to really care that there were some new kids, ignoring him since he was ignoring them.
“You look happy.” Patton said once Virgil had sat down next to him.
Mr. Lockwood shut the door as soon as the bell rang. One unlucky student showed up a few seconds later, opening the door and slinking to their desk.
“We have a few new students today.” He gestured to Virgil and Patton. Virgil immediately started sinking in his seat. “Virgil and Patton Picani. You can get to know them on your own time. Our new unit today is polynomials.”
There were a few groans from the class.
“Yes, yes, I know, math sucks. It’s still my job to teach you and get you to understand the material by any means necessary.” After a moment of silence, he pulled out a remote. “And today’s means are a video.”
The class cheered as the projector was turned on, starting to warm up.
After one more class without Patton, since he’d opted for Spanish and Patton had opted for ASL, they met at their lockers.
“ASL is so much fun!” He gushed as they dumped their morning books and grabbed their stuff for the afternoon. “Our teacher, Talyn, shows us videos while we do the signs. It’s so much easier to figure it out that way!”
“That’s really cool, Pat.” Virgil slipped his backpack straps over his shoulders as they walked to the lunchroom.
Since the school was small, the lunchroom was too. Virgil was relieved to find out that it wasn’t the giant, two-story area he was thinking of. High School Musical wasn’t the best depiction of high school, but it was all he knew.
They moved through the line, grabbing some rubbery looking pizza, a fruit cup, and a sugar cookie.
“This looks nasty.” Virgil said as they sat at an empty table in the corner. “I’m definitely packing a lunch the rest of the year.”
“It might not be that bad!” Patton took a bite of the pizza. “The pizza is okay. No Little Caesar’s, but it’s...edible.”
The two of them choked down their lunches. By the time they were finished, the cafeteria was mostly cleared out. Following the few students left, Patton and Virgil found that most of the students headed off to wherever they wanted to, using their spare lunch time as a little bit of a free period.
Virgil glanced at the kids before starting to shuffle down the hall. “I’m gonna get my stuff and head to History.”
“Okay!” Patton started walking with him. “I’m gonna head to the gym. Mr. Anderson should probably know how clumsy I am before he decides where I’m going on the volleyball court.”
“You’re not that clumsy.”
The two of them burst into giggles at Virgil’s claim. Patton was known for tripping over the slightest thing. Sometimes that included his own feet. But Virgil and their dad never made him feel bad about it, telling Patton that it simply added to his charm.
Once they’d gathered their stuff from their lockers, the two of them went their separate ways once more. Virgil headed off to history with Mr. Foote, and Patton headed to the gym.
There were a few students already over there, heading into the locker room. Patton went into the gym first, hoping to talk to Mr. Anderson before class started.
“Woah, you need your uniform tod -” Mr. Anderson stopped himself. “I apologize, you must be one of the new students. Let me see...Patton?”
“That’s me!” Patton said, giving him a smile. “I wanted to warn you before class started. I’m really clumsy.”
“Even the clumsiest among us can be great athletes.” Mr. Anderson looked up, marking a few students off on his clipboard. “Don’t worry, Patton, I’m here to make sure no one gets hurt, whether it be intentional or an accident. And when I can’t prevent that, Nurse Britches does an excellent job at patching people up.”
Patton giggled, leaving Mr. Anderson to talk to the students who had just walked in. He quickly changed into his uniform and tennis shoes, throwing the rest of his stuff in his gym locker.
“You’re new.”
Green eyes looked up at Patton from the nearest bench. The boy was tying his shoes, the red accents matching his bandana perfectly.
“I’m Patton.”
The boy stood, flicking his hair out of his eyes. “Roman.”
“I thought we had to wear the uniform.” Patton said as they headed out of the locker room.
Roman shot him a mischievous grin. “If you check the handbook, the rules say we have to wear the uniform. It doesn’t say anything about us not being able to add anything to it. Though once Principal Sanders figures that out, he’ll probably fix it for next year.”
Patton let out a giggle. “I mean, you’re still following the rules.”
“Technically, yeah.”
They filed into the gym with the rest of the class. Mr. Anderson, who insisted Patton call him Coach Leo, split them up into teams before letting them loose.
Patton was lucky enough to be on Roman’s team. “I’m pretty clumsy, so…”
“Everyone gets a turn in each spot.” Roman said, nudging him into the back center. “Of course, that’s if the other team can hit the ball back over. I’m the best server in the class.”
Class flew by, with Roman scoring point after point. Once he’d fully decimated the other team, Coach Leo called out a rule that servers could only score five points in a row, and then the team had to rotate.
“Doesn’t matter, we’ll still win.” Roman mumbled under his breath.
And he was right. Their team was the winner at the end of class, with no losses on their record.
“Tomorrow we’ll work on some of the basics again.” Coach Leo said as the bell rang.
Roman and Patton headed to the locker room to change back into their normal clothes.
“So where did you sit at lunch today?” Roman asked, pulling his shirt over his head.
“Over in the corner with my twin.”
“You have a twin?!” Roman practically shrieked.
No one gave them a second glance, telling Patton that he must do this a lot. “Mhmm. His name is Virgil.”
“Well, I cannot wait to meet your twin tomorrow.” When he noticed Patton’s confused look, Roman continued. “You two have to sit with me and my friends. And my brother.”
“Your brother isn’t your friend?”
Roman waved a hand in the air. “Kinda sorta. I gotta run to English, see you later!”
By the time the day was over, Patton was loaded down with homework. He was happy to see Virgil when he reached his locker to get all the books he’d need.
“Why is there so much to do?!” Virgil asked as he packed practically all of their textbooks into his backpack. The zipper refused to go up all the way, so he just left it open a crack.
Patton shrugged. “Because we came in during the middle of the year?”
“Nah, it’s just because everyone started a new section on the same day.” Tanya told them as she walked up. Her bubblegum snapped as she popped a bubble. “It’s not normally like that.”
“I guess we’re just lucky.” Hoisting up his backpack, Virgil slung it over one shoulder. “We should go find Dad.”
Patton nodded before turning to Tanya. “Did you need a ride home?”
“Nah, I take the bus.” Tanya adjusted her backpack. “Gives me some time with my friends. But I’ll see you guys later.”
“Bye!”
The Picanis headed out of the double doors, finding their dad waiting a little down the block. As soon as they got in, he gave them a huge smile.
“How was school?”
Virgil and Patton looked at each other. Virgil waved his hand and Patton started talking first.
“It was a lot of fun, even though we have a lot of homework. I met a lot of people and I made a new friend! His name is Roman, he’s in my gym class. Oh! And my ASL teacher is super cool. They show us videos to learn the signs and it makes it a lot easier. Um...I think that’s it.”
“I’m glad you made a friend! He’ll have to come over sometime soon so I can meet him.” Emile switched his gaze to his other son in the rearview mirror. “Virgil? How’d it go?”
“It went alright. My English teacher is really cool. We’re doing Hamlet, which they told me is just like the Lion King. And I think I made a friend? He’s in my science class and we sit together. He doesn’t talk a lot unless he’s answering a question.”
“What’s his name?”
“Logan. And he’s short, so I think he might have skipped a grade or something, but I didn’t want to ask him.” As he finished his sentence, Virgil flipped up his hood, putting in his headphones.
The next day at lunch, Patton dragged Virgil over to where Roman was sitting. Virgil noticed Logan sitting at the emptier end of the table, eyes moving over a book in front of him as he ate.
“The name’s Roman.” Roman said to Virgil, who responded with a half smile and a wave. Waving his hand down the table, Roman introduced everyone else. “That’s Alex, Quil, and Nessa. The one at the end who’s ignoring everyone is my brother, Logan.”
“Logan’s your brother?” Virgil asked.
Logan finally looked up when he heard Virgil’s voice. “Sadly.”
“Hey!”
“If you want some semblance of peace and quiet, I’d suggest you join the loner end of the table.” Logan continued, ignoring his brother’s shout of protest.
Virgil immediately moved across from Logan, hearing Roman grumble under his breath. Patton easily distracted him with a question, leaving Virgil and Logan to themselves.
“How are you two related?” Virgil asked as he watched Roman talk with his hands.
Logan flipped a page in his book. “We’re not. By blood, I mean. I was adopted.”
“Oh.” Virgil bit his lip, not sure what to say. “Um, that’s cool.”
“It would be if my father and brother weren’t such lunatics.”
The only thing tipping Virgil off that Logan was joking was the tiniest twitch in the corner of his mouth. Once Virgil started laughing, Logan did too.
“Oh my god, he laughs.” Roman teased from the other end of the table, earning himself a rude gesture from Logan.
That, combined with the offended gasp from Roman and a scolding from Patton, made Virgil laugh even harder. Tears started streaming down his face as he continued, unable to stop for a good minute or so.
The rest of the week became routine. Patton and Virgil ate at Roman and Logan’s table every single day. The four of them became fairly good friends by the end of the week.
Good enough friends for Roman to come in on Friday, excitement sparkling in his eyes, and say, “My dad said you guys could sleep over tonight.”
Ice spread through Virgil’s veins at the thought. He stammered out some sort of excuse before taking off, leaving his lunchbox behind.
“Was it something I said?” Roman asked as he stared at were Virgil had been.
Patton quickly got up, grabbing Virgil’s lunchbox. “He - it’s - I’ll text you later and explain, okay? I don’t want to say something he doesn’t want me to say.”
Roman simply nodded as Patton took off to go find his brother.
