Fossil Novembirb 11: A New Dawn
Tumblr media
Palaeotis by @drawingwithdinosaurs
One of the absolutely best known ecosystems of the Eocene is found at the Messel Pit site of Germany. Deposited in a similar way (via multiple volcanic eruptions over periods of thousands of years) to the Fossil Lake of yesterday, but a few million years later, it shows the end of the early Eocene and the start of the emergence of modern mammalian groups. Lucky for us, it also shows the next stage of bird evolution! This was also the site featured in the first episode of Walking With Beasts, "A New Dawn", though the avifauna was not particularly well represented in that program.
Yes, obviously, Gastornis was in Messel, though as a large ground herbivore than a predator. But there were plenty more birds than that! Lithornis was also here, because it was just as ubiquitous; and there was also the mysterious Palaeoganth Palaeotis. Originally thought to be a relative of Ostriches, then not, and now possibly again, this bird has a strangely intermediate morphology between that of large flightless Palaeognaths and the Lithornithids of the early Paleogene; indicating it may be a transitional form. It would not have been able to fly, given its short wings and lack of keel, and probably fed on small animals in its environment.
Tumblr media
Juncitarsus by @thewoodparable
In addition to the Megafowl Gastornis, there was also the early landfowl Paraortygoides, which did not have a crop like living landfowl and as such probably mainly fed on soft plant material. It also had shorter legs than other landfowl relatives at the time, indicating it may have been more similar to living pheasants than fowl that had been around previously.
Even though the Flamingo-Ducks like Presbyornis would stick around well into the Neogene, the first relatives of Flamingos show up at around this time. Juncitarsus was a wading bird, probably just as closely related to living grebes as their cousins flamingos, and had gastroliths in its stomach - allowing it to feed on hard animals it gathered in from the lake. It wasn't the only wader; Messelornis, a wader related to living rails and cranes; is the most common bird at the Messel Pit and was an important generalist in its ecosystem. In addition, the "Snipe-Rail" Rhynchaeites was actually an ibis relative, probing for food with its beak in the substrate around the lake.
Tumblr media
Scaniacypselus by Paleo Miguel
Strisores are everywhere at Messel, with relatives of swifts and hummingbirds like Cypseloramphus, Parargornis, and Scaniacypselus, which weren't as adapted to specialized aerial niches as their living relatives. An insectivore with tiny feet, Protocypselomorphus, was also present; as were an early potoo in the form of Paraprefica and an early frogmouth in the form of Masillapodargus.
Strange flight specialists far away from their living ranges aren't the only bizarre features of the ecosystem - Masillastega, a piscivore and relative of living gannets and boobies, was also present at Messel. More relatives of seriemas, like Dynamopterus, Salmila, and Strigogyps showcase how not all Cariamiformes were predators - Strigogyps was an herbivore! The long-legged predator Masillaraptor was present there too, indicating falcons were successful as multiple types of raptors prior to today. The owl Palaeoglaux was a small predatory bird, with ribbon-like feathers in dense layers on its back.
Tumblr media
Eocoracias by @drawingwithdinosaurs
There were, of course, many tree dwelling birds in this lacustrine forest, including relatives from both sides of the "core landbirds" family tree. The ecosystem preserves a truly alarming number of mousebirds, including Chascacocolius with a conical beak, and Eoglaucidium with a strangely short tail. Eocoracias, another early roller like those found in Denmark, had iridescent feathers. Early hoopoes like Messelirrisor and early trogons like Masillatrogon show even more examples of more tropical birds showing up in higher latitude locations during this warm period. Messelastur was another possible Parrot/Passerine of prey; as was possibly Pumiliornis. Tons of pre-Passerines were here, too, including the zygodactly-footed Serudaptus, Psittacopes, and Primozygodactylus.
These dinosaurs were living at the end of a time of rapid evolution and diversification for most living things on Earth. However, the hot and humid times never last - as the planet begins to cool, drier ecosystems spread around the planet, and the global tropical forests fade into obscurity. It's time for these new groups of dinosaurs to adapt for new ecosystems...

A New Book Illuminates the Lives of the Elusive, Pink-Plumed Flamingos in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula
In the Yucatán Peninsula, the rich wetland environment of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is one of the most important sites for flamingos. The pink-pigmented birds flock to the area for breeding each year, with officials registering approximately 15,000 nests and 30,000 adults inhabiting the area in 2021 alone.

Normal service has now resumed After our Galapagos adventure we are now relaxing back in Quito, until our flight tomorrow to Lima for a bit of site seeing before we test the political climate in Peru on our 20 dsy tour of the country, hopefully devoid of road blocks and demonstrations. I Didn't want anything too strenuous today, so we took a cable car to view the City from 1000m higher at 4000m above sea level. A bit of altitude sickness kicked in and despite my high level of natural fitness I became dizzy and breathless. Unfortunately the notoriously changeable Quito weather didn't go our way, but we did get a close up view of the Quito mist, ( see our wildly interesting pics later ) We did get a couple of photos which give an idea of the vastness of the 44Km by 18 Km city. To get there we had to experience a typical Quito taxi ride, on roads where six cars take up only 4 lanes. ( I try to keep my eyes closed most of the journey to prevent potential heart attacks ) I am sure also that these taxis all have a feed from the exhaust pipe directly into the back seat. I think this may also be a reason why I felt dizzy before. I think they should all be fitted with carbon monoxide indicators. The country seems very good at conservation and saving the environment in some areas, but could make things better by adding an emissions test to their equivalent of our MOT, ( assuming they have some sort of vehicle inspection which I extremely doubt)
Anyway onto the Galapagos......
And for any of you who know me and my propensity for motion sickness, I was a bit apprehensive of 4 days on a small boat. ( yes the motion sickness is why I don't move so quickly on the volleyball and tennis courts anymore ) However those fears never came to fruition ( much ), and we were totally blown away by the landscapes, seascapes , wildlife, the boat, the crew and fellow passengers. I encountered Sharks, seal lions ( not seals, there is a difference ), sea turtles, rays, red crabs, frigate birds, flamingoes, darwins finches, giant tortoises and many more, but my favourites had to be the many boobies I saw. We were ably assisted by our knowledgeable and witty Ecuadorian guide who was even funnier than me and based upon our current experiences would recommend Intrepid tours to anyone thinking of making similsr trips and no I am not sponsored by them. Anyway enough from me for now, as even I am getting bored of rambling on, and Dom needs me to change the Disney + password. Have a look at the photos which will follow shortly and look forward to my next thrilling instalment, once we have had the opportunity to experience some delights of Lima, bye for now

‘Selfie’ Flamingos In Caribbean Resorts Are Being Returned To The Wild
Up to a hundred Caribbean flamingos live in resorts, where they form a backdrop of tourists’ social media posts. Now, bird lovers are stepping in to remove them.
— ByJessica Taylor Price | March 06, 2024
At several resorts in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, flamingos wander the grounds, wading through artificial ponds and foraging any bits of food dropped by tourists.
Visitors post photos and videos of themselves getting close to the birds on social media, attracted to the exoticism of the pink, leggy animals against the backdrop of a tropical beach vacation.
But behind the charming social media posts, things are less rosy for the flamingos.
Tumblr media
Top: In the town of Monte Cristi, a mural by artist Kilia Llano highlights the issue of flamingos being captured from the wild. Bottom: Three flamingos walk through a resort in the Bávaro region. Tourists often feed the birds and take photos with them, especially around the pool.
Though the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the Caribbean—also known as the American—flamingo as “of least concern,” anecdotal evidence suggests the population is declining on the Caribbean island, says Maria Milagros Paulino, director of the Dominican nonprofit Grupo Accion Ecologica.
“When you see flamingos, you see them in groups, so it gives the appearance that they are numerous,” Paulino says through a translator.
Tumblr media
Map
The phenomenon of flamingos living at resorts had been trending upward for years, especially in the Bávaro region of Punta Cana, says Eladio Fernandez, a Dominican conservationist and photographer. In 2020, he conducted an informal census of how many birds lived in Bávaro resorts by scrolling through TripAdvisor photos. It’s not known exactly how the flamingos arrived at the various resorts and who is involved in bringing the birds there.
According to Fernandez, personnel from the hotels themselves don’t know where the flamingos came from, in some cases they’ve been there a long time and personnel rotate in and out.
In 2020, he counted 163 flamingos in 41 hotels. Anywhere between a thousand and 3,000 Caribbean Flamingos live in the Dominican Republic. Since those birds don’t breed, they’re not replenishing the population, Fernandez says.
So, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the National Zoo in Santo Domingo, and Grupo Accion Ecologica, he spent three years coordinating and fundraising to launch a nonprofit called Rescate Rosado, which translates to “pink rescue” in Spanish.
Ministry employees pick up the flamingos, then transfer them to Rescate Rosado and zoo employees, who eventually release them back into the wild, Fernandez says. So far, the nonprofit has removed 66 birds from resorts in the Dominican Republic—and they say they’re just getting started.
Tumblr media
Nelson García Marcano, the Dominican Republic's director of the Department of Biodiversity and Wildlife of the Ministry of Environment, removes a flamingo from a Bávaro resort. This animal is part of the Rescate Rosado's first-ever rescue.
Because of the efforts to remove the flamingos, there should be fewer than a hundred living at Bávaro resorts—but it’s difficult to know for sure, Fernandez says.
Death Traps
On the other side of the country, at Monte Cristi National Park, the pristine resort environment is nowhere to be found. Instead, there are salty lagoons and muddy mangrove swamps accessible only by motorcycle.
This is the natural habitat for Caribbean flamingos; it's also a popular trapping site. And it is here that Paulino, a collaborator with Rescate Rosado, works to remove the traps, which are made of wooden stakes attached to two lassos of fishing wire.
Paulino's group first noticed the traps in 2009 and has been reporting them to the authorities ever since, but the practice hasn’t stopped, and is expected to pick up again this winter and spring, Fernandez says. Once, Paulino says, she spotted a trapper carrying nine flamingos in a bag. On a trip early in 2023, Grupo Ecologico took 706 traps from three locations.
The crude method of trapping can also harm, or even kill, the birds, which Fernandez has seen firsthand in the field. A flamingo could be walking around and "all of a sudden their leg falls in the lasso and when they pull, they're caught," says Fernandez. They could be trapped by a knee or an ankle, and struggle to break free, which exhausts them, especially as the water bogs down their wings.
Tumblr media
Top: A rescued flamingo, one of many whose feathers have been clipped to prevent escape from hotels and resorts, enters rehabilitation at the National Zoological Park of the Dominican Republic. Bottom: Trappers use a crude system of wooden stakes attached to fishing wire to ensnare the birds.
The trappers, meanwhile, might not come back for days, leaving the birds—or any other animals caught in the device—in a precarious position. "It's a death trap for the flamingo if they don't get pulled out soon," Fernandez says.
The first time Fernandez went to Monte Cristi National Park to look for traps with Paulino, they found a dead flamingo still in a trap. It had likely been there for months.
Birds In Trouble
"Some [resort flamingos] are well taken care of, and others aren't," Fernandez says.
Some of these flamingos have their secondary feathers cut, which thwarts flight, as Fernandez has observed. Others have a bone surgically removed from their wings, he says. This grounds the bird for life, which can be up to 60 years, says Fernandez. It is not known who cuts the feathers or removes the bones.
Tumblr media
Flamingos await release at Monte Cristi National Park.
Several resorts housing flamingos declined to be interviewed for this article.
Fernandez has also witnessed flamingos being given pet food, which eventually fades the vibrant pink color that comes from eating their native diet of shrimp and other small crustaceans. The birds change behaviorally as well, becoming used to people and soliciting them for food, as Fernandez has seen.
But there's at least one trait the flamingos perhaps haven’t lost. Fernandez has seen one instance in which flamingos, which form tight social bonds, stayed by the side of a captive wing-clipped companion.
Two former flamingo hunters are working with the project, sharing their knowledge of trapping. And people are calling out influencers on social media who post photos of the resort flamingos.
On a bigger scale, Fernandez will participate in a formal flamingo census in 2024, which he hopes may lead to the species being listed as endangered in the Dominican Republic.
"This is something we can fix. We can right a wrong," Fernandez said.
Tumblr media
An aerial view shows the lagoon where the flamingos will be released in Monte Cristi National Park.
Tumblr media
A member of the National Zoo carefully holds a Flamingo. All animals need to be massaged so that blood circulates properly to their feet.
An Emotional Release
In February 2023, guests watched as eight flamingos were removed from a Bávaro resort that cooperated with the rescue. The birds, wrapped in pantyhose to keep them immobilized, were transported in a pickup truck to the national zoo, where they were examined.
The conditions of the birds varied, says Tatiana Carreño Pinto, a zoo veterinarian. Some were underweight, whereas some are too heavy to fly, but all were generally healthy.
Tumblr media
Tatiana Carreño, a Veterinarian at the National Zoo of the Dominican Republic, is moved and cries when she sees the newly released flamingos flying.
Once vets examine the birds, they’re put in an isolated corral for two to three months, and, in this controlled setting, deliberately frightened to regain their natural fear of people.
One morning later that month, scientists loaded 12 flamingos into a truck and drove them to Monte Cristi National Park. Once there, veterinarians massaged their legs to promote circulation.
Then, a boat transported the birds to the lagoon, where another corral awaited them under black mangrove trees. They opened their wings and walked in the confined space, where the flamingos would adjust to their new environment.
Tumblr media
The newly released animals explore their new home.
The next morning, it was go time. The 12 flamingos, seven of which were from resorts, flew or walked away into the lagoon as the rescue team watched, Fernandez says.
"It was very emotional," Pinto says in Spanish. "It was inevitable to cry.”

This summit, which rises 1,934 meters above sea level, is renowned for a variety of reasons, including its breathtaking views and thrilling excursions. The best thing about Jebel Jais is that it always has nicer weather than at sea level. Additionally, a 4-kilometer hiking track provides unmatched views. The mountain is 1,300 meters high, and from its summit, you can enjoy a stunning 180-degree perspective of the whole thing.
5. Al Wathba Wetland
Tumblr media
This area is a natural reserve also referred to as the Flamingo City of the UAE. It is one of the few places where wildlife may exist without human interference. The marsh, which is ideal for taking long walks through natural trees and vegetation, is home to hundreds of flamingos.
6. Wadi Ghalilah, Ras Al Khaimah
Tumblr media
Wadi Ghalilah, which is two hours outside of Dubai, is renowned for its higher cliffs and rocks. Due to the wadi's low elevation and proximity to the water, it is difficult to travel there because of the heat and humidity. And if you intend to hike, be sure to have a companion who has sufficient hiking expertise or has already completed the hike.
7. Umm Al Quwain Wetlands
Tumblr media
This location is perfect for you if you want to enjoy the historic charm of the UAE. It is surrounded by little islands and situated close to a stunning bright blue lagoon. For those who enjoy nature and bird watching, these islands are ideal.
8. Masfout, Ajman
Tumblr media
One of the most popular and lovely summer resorts in the UAE is Masfout. Masfout, which is tucked away on the outskirts of Ajman, is higher up and pollution-free. It is the perfect location for picnics, hiking, mountain biking, and wadi exploring.
9. Snoopy Island, Fujairah
Tumblr media
One of the best-kept secrets in the UAE, Snoopy Island is situated in the lovely emirate of Fujairah, about two hours from the busy city of Dubai. Who wouldn't want to fill their social media feeds with nice travel photos when they're abroad, right? Turtles, fish, sharks, and other aquatic creatures can be found in the marine paradise. And while you're here, you may go scuba diving, kayaking, snorkeling, or stay at a beach resort.
10. Al Ain Oasis
Tumblr media
This location is not ordinary; in fact, it is the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the UAE. The oasis, which is dispersed over 3000 acres, is one of the oldest inhabited towns in the world, dating back more than 4000 years. It features lovely, peaceful pathways lined with lots of palm palms, which are delightful to look at. To explore Al Ain Oasis, an emirates visa for Kenya passport holders is required.

Flamingo animal
Tumblr media
The feathers are also initially gray, but will gradually be replaced by the pink, adult plumage as the flamingo ages and incorporates carotenoid compounds from its diet into new growth. Both their legs and bill are dark gray in color, and only become pink as the bird matures. Young birds are covered with a downy-type feather when they first hatch. Because there is no difference in coloration between the sexes, the bright pink coloration is not likely to be any type of sexual signal, though some researchers suggest it may function equally for both sexes in selecting a mate as a sign of fitness due to overall nutrition status. The legs are bright pink as well and end with pink, webbed feet. They feature pale irises and a pale bill with pink and black on the tip. Adults have primarily pink plumage with black flight feathers only visible in flight. Otherwise both sexes are uniformly colored. Sexual dimorphism is present in that males are slightly larger than females, and females obtain their adult color slightly earlier than males. This reversal is largely attributed to flamingos' method of feeding by submerging their heads upside-down. Thus when it eats, the upper mandible moves as opposed to the lower, which is completely reversed from all birds and mammals. Flamingo's lower mandibles are larger than the upper, which is not rigidly attached to the skull. In contrast to other birds, flamingo's bills are essentially reversed. Their large bills consist of layers of horny plates used to filter out prey from the water. The bill is uniquely adapted for filter-feeding, and its shape is not shared among any other family of birds. Flamingos will often rest their head on their body in order to avoid fatigue in the neck muscles. They are most well-known for their bright pink coloration and in fact, the word "flamingo" derives from old Spanish for "flaming" or "red feather." Individuals have long, graceful necks and legs which in proportion to body size are the longest of any bird. Greater flamingos are one of the larger members of the Aves class with a wingspan measuring 1.5 m wide, standing 1.2 m tall, and weighing 2.1 to 4.1 kg. Flamingos show little to no site-tenacity and don't often return to previous flocking sites, or to their birth locations. In colonies of such high density, occasional food shortages arise and flocks will perform short migrations in search of greater food resources. Habitats are nearly always coastal, but they have been known to move inland to lagoons or volcanic lakes. These habitats are often located near larger bodies of water such as coastal areas, sea inlets, rivers, and open lakes. They are harsh environments where filter feeders benefit from reduced competition and predation while at the same time being able to take advantage of the abundant food sources. Hyper-saline estuaries are the preferred habitat. These large mud flats are usually located near a food supply. They tend to occupy large mud flats where the loose mud can be easily formed into the mounds that they use as nests. ( "Focus on Flamingos", 2010 "Tour du Valat", 2010 Allen, 1956 Fer, 2006 Roynesdal, 2007)įlamingos live in large colonies, oftentimes numbering into the thousands of individuals. Flamingos have been seen in the southern United States, though they are not as prolific as in the more southern latitudes. The range of Caribbean flamingos, a subspecies of Phoenicopterus ruber, covers the northern shore of South America, most shoreline around the Caribbean Sea, as well as nearby islands in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. Specifically, the range of greater flamingos extends across the entire shoreline of Africa, the Mediterranean Sea, parts of Asia and India as well as southern United States, the Caribbean, and Yucatan Peninsula where there are warm coastal habitats. Depending on the authority involved, there are up to six distinct species, each with its own range and geographic dispersion. Flamingos are found on all continents except Antarctica and Australia.

Hello can I request Sigma,Fyodor and Nikolai with a reader that is like the Queen of Hearts and has a bunch of rules and if anybody disobeys them they use their ability to decapitate them by saying ‘off with your head!’. Some of the rules are really petty and random eg. Eating a tart without the readers permission, wearing pink to feed the flamingos, one must leave the table within fifteen minutes of eating their lunch etc. So basically the reader is like a tyrant.
That's so cool!
Sigma x fem!reader, Fyodor x fem!reader, Nikolai x fem!reader
♥️ My Navigation is here ♥️
Warnings: Queen of Hearts ability, female!reader, mentions of executions (and murder), probs some sadism because the guys are psychos, one (1) curse word (shit)

Low-key scared to be honest
Not fully, but he's been through a lot and he can honestly think of better ways to spend his time
However, one day you execute someone for starting chaos in his beloved casino
And he can't help but ask to take you out to a high class restaurant
Asks you to add rules to ensure the perfection of the casino
Now, it's safer than ever, and you will get rid of any "troublemakers" immediately
He has you put a special rule for Fyodor and Nikolai specifically (it's on sight)
Tumblr media
Highly intrigued, and for once doesn't try to manipulate someone
While he does entertain the thought, he discards it pretty much immediately
Mostly because he has seen your wrath and thinks better of it
Does love to gently take your hand, kiss it, and then bring you to the site of execution
You are his Queen and executioner
Loves to call you his Angel of Death
Tumblr media
Heart eyes. Immediately.
Asks to kiss your hand, bows, calls you ravishing
Wants to have a rule book, doesn't read it and laughs in the faces of those who fall prey to your wrath or ask him why he hasn't read your rules, if you've already written them down for him specifically
If he's going to die, he'd love for it to be by your cruel hand
(Sometimes does some supid shit to see if that will break a rule)
Does literally anything you ask him to
He's essentially your cheeky court jester that just so happens to be your s/o
Loves to be your messenger - especially if he gets to see the fear in the eyes of your victims
Loves to see you execute your will - quite literally
He calls you his lovely Queen of Death

Thousands of Flamingos turn Lake Bogoria in Kenya 🇰🇪 pink as they flock together in search of algae to eat and fill the air.
Lake Bogoria in Kenya is one of the lesser celebrated of the Rift Valley lakes but it provides as much beauty and inspiration as any of the other dramatic lakes in the region.
Such is the importance of Lake Bogoria that it has been declared a Ramsar Site and the Lake Bogoria National Reserve has been a protected area since the early 1970's. With a depth of about 10 meters the lake is relatively shallow and is approximately 34 km long by 3.5 km wide.
Lake Bogoria is a saline, alkaline lake and lies just south of Lake Baringo. With it’s ideal conditions it is home to one of the world's largest populations of lesser flamingoes. Due to the lake’s alkalinity, blue green algae grows well, this in turn feeds the flamingoes.
At times the number of flamingoes feeding in the lake may be as many as two million - creating a wonderful undulating blaze of pink as the flamingoes go about their feeding. This scene of brilliant pink flamingoes by the millions is only found in the Rift Valley Lakes of Kenya, and so is not replicated anywhere else in the world, due to the very specific environment needed by the birds.
Aside from the flamingoes, there are many other birds and animals to see at Lake Bogoria such as buffalo, zebra, baboon, warthog, caracal, spotted hyena, impala and dik dik.
The ground in this area is formed geologically from recent volcanic rocks from the Miocene - Pleistocene era. Around Bogoria there are some 200 hot springs with water temperatures from 39 to 98.5C. Nearly all these springs are close to the lake or are inside the lake. The hot springs in general have a high content of carbon dioxide, this causes the wild boiling of the springs.
