I forgot to come back and comment on the results, but the correct answer is Isabella Summers! The other individuals I named are, or have been, in the backing band. I thought some of you might remember it was a specific woman, but not her name--which didn't happen.

Anyway, the band is both Florence "Robot" Welch and Isabella "Machine" Summers's project, and they tried calling it Florence Robot/Isa Machine before deciding that was too long. Summers co-wrote some of my favorites of their songs, including "Dog Days Are Over," "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful," and "I'm Not Calling You a Liar," and separately from Florence + the Machine she writes a lot of interesting scores for movies and television, and I think she's well worth knowing about in her own right. Thanks for playing, everyone, that was fun!

Nobody be rude in the comments about being a bigger or more knowledgeable fan than anyone else, please! I've followed the group since the Lungs days, and feel like the origin story of the name used to be very often repeated by others who did. I haven't seen it as much as time has gone on, so I'm curious how well known it is now.

do you know if there’s a story about why they called the band fatm?

yes! before florence + the machine became a cohesive band, florence welch and isabella summers were a pop duo. if i remember correctly, they went by both florrible and miserabella, and florence robot and isabella machine. in 2009 florence explained it:

“The name Florence And The Machine started off as a private joke that got out of hand. I made music with my friend, who we called Isabella Machine to which I was Florence Robot. When I was about an hour away from my first gig, I still didn’t have a name, so I thought “Okay, I’ll be Florence Robot Is A Machine,” before realising that name was so long it’d drive me mad. I quite like the fact it’s not organic and pretty, but quite industrial – that juxtaposition of hard and soft.” (x)

you can actually still find early demos of florence robot/isa machine on youtube, like small hands, halloween, this early version of girl with one eye called filthy fingers, and little donkey (the video is a delight!). little donkey became donkey kosh: the donkey kosh demo that came out with the lungs re-release last year. if i remember correctly, tear out my tongue dates from the florence robot/isa machine era, and so does paper massacre (the version i’ve linked here is a longer, fan-made version, since the original demo is less than a minute and a half long, but it’s SO good).

edit: this version of paper massacre has slightly better quality.
