My walking is finally normalizing. There's still pain but my limp is barely there and I'm finally able to quicken my pace. I hated not being able to walk fast. Essentially, I trust my foot enough to jaywalk again. C:

Foot Surgery?
Tumblr media
So, the sore/ulcer on my toe isn't getting much smaller, but not worse either. That said, I'm also not walking that much on it; not like I would like to be.
DR says problem is that my big does doesn't go up/bend up as much as my other toes, so it takes the bulk of weight when I walk. So, he says, I need to have surgery on it to shave part of the metatarsal and a bone spur off, so it will bend up more and this will fix the problem.
But will it, really? I mean, this is clearly not a new issue -- it's probably been this way my whole life, apart from the bone spur. I'm not finding a lot about this surgery online, at least NOT FOR THIS ISSUE. It appears they do it when people are having pain in that joint from the toe not bending enough in that joint due to arthritis, but I don't have pain in the joint.
I'm not a fan of people cutting on my body... who is.... but I'm having second thoughts about this. Wonder if I should do a 'wait and see' thing. I've been eating better, got blood sugar under control now, and am losing weight. Maybe just the fact of losing weight would take the pressure off that toe without surgery?
I'm really not sure who to even go to for a second opinion on this. I wasn't impressed with the last podiatrist I saw, and it takes forever to get into see any, and you don't know if they are any good when you do. I wonder if my new Primary Care DR would have any insight... I also have a dermatologist appointment Thursday-- and it is kind of a skin issue, the ulcer, right?

Tonight, for the first time since the surgery, I walked up and down the stairs without a mobility aid. Just of one of the few ways I can see physical therapy is already helping me and it's only been a week and a half since I started. It's a relief, honestly, that things are finally starting to heal the right way.

turns out my foot does 100% need surgery or it won't heal correctly. and if it doesn't heal correctly, i won't walk again without pain, won't be able to run or jump, etc. my foot would always be at risk of rebreaking due to the instability of my food.
so. getting surgery. it's gonna cost me $1300 just to be able to walk normally again. this sucks.

Regular exercise can help you move quickly ?
In addition to the walking program, a patient is supposed to mull over incorporating other exercises, such as stretching and strengthening exercises, into their routine. Stretching exercises are important as they help loosen tight muscles and increase flexibility. Strengthening exercises, on the other hand, help increase the strength and endurance of the foot and ankle for walking.
On the whole, how much time a person needs to walk after foot surgery or treatment will depend on the individual’s health and the nature of the treatment. In general, rest periods should be taken before any walking program is begun and each program should be tailored to the individual. With dedication and patience, most people can return to their normal routine after a few weeks or months depending on the injury.

Recovery
Tumblr media
It’s been a week – a long one. After the surgery, I went home and up the narrow steps to my apartment on the second floor of a village house. Getting up was hard, hot and uncomfortable. I haven’t moved much since. Moving around has been challenging; fallen once while trying to move things around on crutches. Physically I am good, though figuring out how to keep my feet elevated while on pillows has been challenging. I am not sleeping well; getting comfortable in bed is hard. It is not the physical problem but more the mental parts.
I have worked almost every day and love what I do. What I do as a teacher helps to define me as a person. Not being able to teach has been the most challenging adjustment. I will be back to it in a few weeks but not helping my students become a bit better every day hurts. The school has been good in trying to give me as much recovery time as I wish but not going to work hurts when everyone else is. The head of English teachers and helpers has helped to adjust my teaching. I have sent them lesson plans and other things, which have helped immensely.
I have been lucky to meet a wonderful person who has helped a lot. They are taking care of me both with my house and emotional needs. The cooking, cleaning and helping me move have been excellent. Still, it is the emotional support where they have been the most incredible. This recovery has helped a lot, making me realize it is OK to ask for help when I wouldn’t usually.
Tumblr media
There are 22 more days until the cast comes off, counting the days. The pain is not as sharp, but I notice losing muscles in my healthy leg. My diet has changed; trying to eat less and taking time to fast since I am not as active if healthier.
