stone faced anon (💫 anon if it's free) here; as someone who has a hyperfixation in IT and coding I also think it would be very funny if Boothill had an s/o who wasn't necessarily a mechanic but like a software engineer or just a real big nerd about coding or something. He'll be experiencing a malfunction or a memory leak and go "oh yeah this happens sometimes don't worry about it" and then 10 minutes later he's sitting down plugged into a laptop listening to his s/o rant about how terrible his code is (crack hc: boothill's code was written in javascript) and how it's a wonder he hasn't bricked* yet

Would also be mad funny if Boothill ever got hacked and his s/o basically says "no you're not" and uses a previously made system restore point or something because of course they would both use and design every feature imaginable to keep Boothill in control of his own body, can you imagine the stress that losing control would cause him?? Even better if whoever designed him originally intentionally left a backdoor incase he ever went against their orders and when they try to use it his s/o just goes "oh yeah I quarantined and encrypted all the old files related to that backdoor and whatever else you were planning on a partition as bait and personally rewrote every file and function involved since your code is *an actual crime against technology*. by the way i'm going to go ahead and format that partition i mentioned, boothill- we won't be needing anything on it now that we can trace whoever made it. trust me, this won't be happening ever again."

*(bricking is a term mostly used to refer to hardware that's been rendered basically completely nonfunctional and beyond saving by using it wrong, mostly by messing with system files. Kinda like how windows can't even repair itself if you delete the system32 folder. Though i guess you could still install it with a usb stick if you formatted your pc- i digress you get what I mean. also since this almost happened to me recently: if you manage to fill up a hard drive to the brim, with literally 0 bytes of space left, that bricks it. reminder to check your storage thoroughly and often!)

Boothill would DEFINITELY appreciate a s/o who's a tech savvy in general! I think at some point, he'd be pretty shocked you're so knowledgeable and just sit there, listening to you rant.. and just letting you do your thing.

Don't get me wrong, he definitely knows a lot about his body, his system and the way he works, but once you start to get in the zone and explain stuff to him, berate his code even, he just sits next to you, plugged in to your laptop, leaning his cheek against his hand listening to you like he obviously understands everything you say.

His other hand begins to gently play with a stand of your hair, humming deeply when the soft clicking sounds of your keyboard reach his ears; he twirls your hair with his fingers and chuckles, "mmm, really now?" Boothill raises an eyebrow, "encryptin' this, encryptin' that... How about we do somethin' more fun instead?" And then you shut him down from your laptop (😭).

Jokes aside, he'd feel very secure with you especially when he first got his new body, just knowing you'll probably fix a lot of things that could possibly blow up his face in no time, maybe even improve his life even more.

FMP Planning: Testing Project Forms

Since I can't decide between making a 2D game, game concept art or 3D modeling, I plan on creating a simple character design that I will then make in all three mediums. This will help me decide which format to use.

Concept Character:

This is the character I will use as a test. I have kept the design simple so that I don't get too focused on small details and so that this doesn't use too much time.

2D Game Art:

In terms of game art, I will be making character sprites in different styles. There are two main styles that I want to try which are pixel art and the Helltaker art style.

PC / Computer - Helltaker - Modeus - The Spriters Resource

For the pixel art style, I've aimed not to use an outline since it takes up valuable space when working in smaller pixel quantities. This took about half an hour and was relatively easy.

For the Helltaker artstyle, I've tried to recreate one of the character sprites using my own character. This took a little longer than the pixel art since I haven't used this style before, but was fun to use.

Concept Art/Character Sheet:

Next was trying to create a character reference as that is one of the aspects I would want to emphasise if I choose to do concept art. This character reference took about an hour and a half and is very bare bones for what I would want to actually do for a character sheet in this project. I am still happy with how this test came out.

3D Modeling:

In terms of modeling software, I have chosen to use Maya for this test since Mudbox is quite confusing for me. This test was the longest and took roughly 2 hours for a basic head. Since I was following a tutorial, it is possible that the method I was using just wasn't for me, but I found this process very tedious. While I am still interested in using 3D modeling, I am planning on practicing in my own free time rather than using it this project.

Anon, very unfortunately, I am not an architect, and I just spent 30 minutes trying to draw this out which has highlighted to me that I know what the layout is but my job is actually writing and not...drawing the layouts of homes. (If only)

You can always just look up cosy cottages and then use that, anon!

The job of a reader (imho) isn't to imagine things exactly as they are, but go from the details they've been given and often relate that back to what they already know. Sometimes that might mean looking something up if it's genuinely something you've never seen before (karri trees), or relating them back to a tall tree you're familiar with (sequoias). In fact no reader imagines the same thing when they're reading. I could spend 1000 words describing a red cabinet and people will imagine 1000 slightly different variations anyway. Everyone has a different idea of 'red' and a different idea of 'wood' and a different idea of 'cabinet' and even if I lock down into the nitty gritty, if we're not living in the same country, our power sockets look different, our heating and cooling systems (and accommodations for them) are different, the fabrics we use are different (unless we all go to IKEA), the smells of the home are all slightly different.

I think even if I did draw it out successfully in two hours (which is not time I really have spare at the moment :/ I wish I did because I think it could be fun except that I don't want to download architecture software to make an actual blueprint of an entire cottage that's in scale but also shows exactly where the furniture will go which includes interior design as well x.x - and I do know exactly how it's laid out mentally, so I know I could make it work. (And I still might, maybe, but probably not while I have a 15 week old puppy I'm sorry anon D: ) But yeah doing it on paper has proven to me that actually writing out the location of like 50 different things means the blueprint becomes too small and messy to still tell what's going on. I wrote 'table and chairs' over the table and chairs and now you can no longer see the table and chairs in my sketch which is not useful!

There's a difference between the layout of a house and the layout of the objects and furniture in a house. I may have worked for an architecture firm, but I am not a house designer. *cries*

But! All you really need to know is that Gary can't see the kitchen cabinets from where he sits on the couch. Which means if someone crouches down and opens the cabinets, he can't see them either. There are a lot of houses that have layouts like this, especially houses that have a counter not just up against the wall, but in the middle of the kitchen.

For example in this image, if a couch was in front of the kitchen counter that's free-standing, and a person was sitting on the couch and looked at the free-standing kitchen counter, they would not be able to see the kitchen cabinets from the free standing kitchen counter, or what's in them. They can only see the counter. If the lounge was lower than the kitchen, they'd see even less.

In this image, if the couch was where the stairs are, you'd not be able to see what Efnisien was doing in the kitchen at all until he stoop and held up the teacup. If he kept the teacup low in his hands, you'd not be able to see it at all.

Because Gary's cottage is small, but open plan, the lounge has a view to the kitchen, but not directly into the kitchen.

There's lots of houses that feature this kind of architecture, so if you really want to go down that rabbit hole, you can just search different kitchens in cottages until you see one where if you sit on the couch, you can't see someone crouched in front of the kitchen cabinets.

Gary's free-standing kitchen counter is also multi-level like this is multi-level:

So someone could stand there and make a coffee and a person sitting on the couch wouldn't be able to see what they were doing. Ornaments and vases and notes etc. can go on the raised bit, and kitchen stuff can happen on the lower bit.

Anyway! I hope that helps somewhat. I'm mad that I can't draw this layout for you because I do wish I could just...mentally take people on a tour through this cottage. Dark Core / Armored Souls

Gameplay similarities between the Armored Core and Dark Souls series, ~1700 words

I'm not going to act like I'm saying anything new here. It's a well-known fact that knights* and mechs are basically the same thing. Both are portrayed as the pinnacle of military technology, heavily armored, and typically faceless. Battletech even goes so far as to name its basic organizational unit of mechs after a medieval unit centered around a knight.

*there is an argument to be made that Dark Souls is not solely about knights, what with the option to make all kinds of lightly-armored mages, but those don't seem to feature as prominently in the promotional material - the "face" of the Dark Souls series is hidden behind a helmet.

That out of the way, my bona fides: I've play all three games in the Dark Souls trilogy, Armored Core, Armored Core: Project Phantasma, Armored Core 4, and Armored Core For Answer. I'll be updating this as I get through more of the Armored Core games. If I make a generalization about the AC series that doesn't hold true, that's on me. Noticeably missing from this discussion is Demon's Souls, which would probably be neat to look at as a transitional step between the two series but which I have no immediate plans to actually play. Also missing is King's Field for a look at what FromSoft was doing pre-Armored Core, but again I have no immediate plans to get around to playing it. So we'll stick to a discussion of Armored Core 1-4 and the three Dark Souls games (really just the first one).

Let's start where I did: coming off of Armored Core 4 into Dark Souls.

First off: character details:

They Are The Same Screen

Dark Souls takes all the fiddly bits of mecha engineering and transposes them onto your pseudo-medieval guy. This opens up (or keeps, if you're looking at DS as a mechanical continuation of AC) a lot of design space for builds and playstyles, reminiscent of how AC gives the player free reign to completely redesign their mech between missions. One glaring difference in Dark Souls is that however much you change your equipment around, you are always (with some exception) tied to how you've allotted your level-ups. Alas, the flesh is not as malleable as the machine*.

In a surprise twist, the speed of Dark Souls combat is perhaps closer to the average person's idea of what 'mecha combat' should look like. It's a lot slower and more purposeful than what I would have expected from an action RPG*. Every windup, every recovery, reminds you that your character has a physical body that takes up physical space in the (game) world - exactly what I want from a mech game, where the actual pilot is a relative non-entity inside your imposing metal warmachine. Armored Core 4's combat, by comparison and perhaps unexpectedly, is faster-paced (not a lot of windup/recovery). Exactly how much of Dark Souls' gameplay was deliberately inspired by wanting to make a fantasy game that played like a mech game is speculation I don't want to get into. I'm trying to limit this to discussion of the games themselves versus discussion of From Software the dev studio/company. I haven't even looked up any interviews for this amateur analysis.

*for some reason I went into Dark Souls the very first time expecting it to be closer to God of War.

There's also the fact that Dark Souls' stamina is an evolution of AC's energy meter. One major difference between the two is that in AC attacks don't necessarily require energy so you just really have to worry about it for boosting and energy weapons, vs. always having to balance the stamina requirements of attacking, dodging, and defending in Dark Souls. Again (and this is not a criticism) Dark Souls kind-of makes your knight dude more of a mech than Armored Core does.

Armored Core For Answer feels mostly like a minor upgrade from Armored Core 4, but there are a couple of things to touch on. Because here, right in the middle, is where I'm going to put what I think is the most important game design point of this analysis.

After you beat a mission, Armored Core For Answer asks: do you accept how you did, do you want to try again, or just leave? It is this decision that Dark Souls has miniaturized and forces the player to think about all the time - do I keep going or turn back*? You see in the screenshot, there's a regular reward amount (200000 C) that you can just barely tell has been reduced (-37300 C) by ammo expenditure and damage taken. It is possible to end a mission with a pitifully small reward or (possibly) actually losing money from doing badly**. So, accept the money you get (and you can't try the mission again for more money until new game+), try again for a better result, or back out and maybe edit your mech? This reminds me precisely of a common dilemma in Dark Souls - you just got done with a fight, took some hits, used some estus, maybe some spells, do you accept that and try to push on? Or do you return to a bonfire and try the fight again hoping to do better this time? And that is a decision the player is constantly faced with. Dark Souls took this decision that only appears at the end of missions in ACFA and expanded it to cover everything the player does in the game. And that, to me, is one of the big things that makes Dark Souls what it is.

*Dark Souls does just kind of mush the 'retry' and 'give up' options into one

**In my (limited) experience actually losing money is much more common in the older games than 4/For Answer

However, if pushed there is one other thing that I would point to as a more direct inspiration from Armored Core to Dark Souls.

This Fuckin' Guy

During the final mission before the regular ending* one of the two enemy ACs you fight is this boosty bastard with a powerful sword who will cut your mech in half (and it's a miracle I was able to get a screencap of it this nice). To dive into rampant speculation, I think this is the fight that FromSoft looked at when designing Demon's Souls and said "what if there was more melee counterplay to this", leading to the options of counterattack/parry/block/dodge and from there Dark Souls' general (melee) combat mechanics.

*ACFA has two other endings, but getting either requires playing the game again after seeing this one.

Armored Core For Answer also kind-of features a level up system, using FRS memory (awarded after some battles and arena matches) to 'tune' your AC. AC4 also had this but you could just auto-assign your FRS slots. ACFA makes you do tuning manually.

Another important point (to me) can be made by going back in time.

Remember how I said it was possible to end up with negative money from a mission? That can happen fairly regularly, so you can end up with a balance pretty far into the negatives. Get too far into the negatives and instead of just getting a game over, your character is forcibly turned into a cyborg (called a Human PLUS), your balance gets set to 0, and you start over with all your mech parts and some neat upgrades to your piloting ability (e.g. having the best radar without needing to install any components). This is another thing Dark Souls does that is very important to my but I don't see discussed regularly. Dark Souls never tells you the game is over and you have to restart. You guy dies, possibly a lot, and every time the game automatically puts you back to let you keep going. So early Armored Core (I don't know if 4/FA have anything similar) also has that continuity of the game that Dark Souls has but, more importantly, it has the continuity of character that Dark Souls has. In Dark Souls every time your character dies is canon. After every death it's the same little pseudo-medieval dude getting up by the bonfire again after a terrible thrashing and resolving to try again. This, to me, is one of the most important things Dark Souls does - it says you can always try again. You can always get better, no matter how badly it went last time. Armored Core's version, while crueler, is essentially the same thing - you can try again. You can get better.

The early Armored Core games also have the slower-paced combat you'd expect from a mech game, partly because looking up/down and strafing are on the god-damned shoulder buttons.

Lastly: enemies. From my experience (really only the first and fourth entries), over the course of the Armored Core games the majority of the enemies you fight shifts ever so slightly from mostly blowing away MTs*, more rudimentary mechs than your AC, to regularly fighting enemy ACs (especially late game, and that's not even getting into the arena). MTs are simple, more like cannon fodder than anything else. ACs on the other hand are each unique, possibly requiring a more careful approach. This is another thing Dark Souls expands on - every DS enemy is dangerous, each has their own attack patters that can be costly to ignore. DS continues the mechanical evolution in enemies from the AC games.

*stands for 'muscle tracers' after the command input they apparently use, I don't know if that's ever explained in-game

So: to me, a lot of Dark Souls' mechanical weight comes from things that have their roots in Armored Core, even down to the player's moment-to-moment decision making. I love both series, and I think it's interesting to see how they're intertwined together like this. AC VI is the elephant in the room, of course. I suppose I'll make a followup at some point, in its own post.

The winter months are always difficult for me when it comes to my mood, motivation, and happiness. I've had depression for...15 years now? Something like that, I try not to keep tabs on it at this point, but this year has hit me like a ton of bricks.

It's been about two months since I've really felt motivated to do...anything. My hobbies like app design, development, a coffeeshop food truck idea that's been bouncing around in my head, or even planning my wedding with my fiancé. I just can't find the motivation or the desire to jump into it, even though I know I enjoy it and I know it will be helpful for me.

I feel like, without that outlet, I'm just feeling a bit lost. What do I do when I don't have the energy or motivation to do anything? What do I do when this baggage and these emotions are just along for the ride? I feel like I'm in a sort of "maintenance mode", where I'm just fixing up things that are "broken" and getting back to a sense of safety and comfort.

I think that's one of the things that's attracted me to solarpunk in the first place as an ideology. It's a community that is there for everyone else in the community. Burdens are shared, there is a sense of belonging, and the focus is put on the person, not on their economic value to some capitalist society.

I'd like to participate in the community more, but I always feel like I'm someone who is always just on the outskirts of a community, like a guest, I guess is the way to word it. I'd like to find a purpose within the community, one that allows me to appreciate and utilize my skills. Which in turn are used for the betterment of the solarpunk community at large, or even within someone's own little community, whatever that may be.

One idea I've had is an open source app for the solarpunk community. A way for a community to manage shared resources like vehicles, shared spaces, and more. To connect and communicate with other solarpunk communities and individuals around the world. I think, ultimately, I'd like to use my skills in app design & development to provide free open source apps and software for people to use as needed, removing capitalist intentions & gross venture capitalist and exploitative practices from harming the community.

I don't know, and I guess it's okay to not know. I'm going to keep chugging along and do what makes me happy. And right now, what makes me happy is cooking some rice and reheating my curry.
