Juliette Ferrars.
So, I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to fuel more drama in this fandom, but I think it's time for me to voice out my side of the story because I had enough. I cannot get peace around here without someone coming to me and letting me know that some people have been badmouthing me.
I honestly don't really care what you all think or do, but the fact that I can't seem to enjoy the things that I like, I think it's time for me to come in here and review the issues that has been going on.
I. Issues II. Bullying and Accusations III. Communication IV. Conclusion
I. Issues:
Cosplay/Face Claims. Cosplaying has been a part of my life for the last couple of years. Mostly, I do Marvel cosplay due to the fact that I am mostly in that fandom before. Since recently, I have found my Shatter Me Book from high school. Let me remind you, this book has existed in my high school life since I was 17. I am 27 now. That's 10 years I have known this series. This series were the only series I truly enjoyed. I actually never read any other book series but this one, only also because I'm not really a reader. I'm more into writing my own stories and expressing that art through photography.
So, let me be the one to clear this to you all: my Juliette Ferrars cosplay/face claim is not copied by anyone here in tumblr. This character has been a better part of my life since I was 17 and since I have been cosplaying other Marvel characters, I have decided to add Juliette into my list. (See figure 1, 2. and 3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(figure 1) me as Yelena Belova. (figure 2) me as Wanda Maximoff
Fandom. I usually don't interact much in the Shatter Me fandom before but ever since I have met a few people because of the Aaron Warner fics I have been publishing, I have gotten to know this fandom a little better.
If everyone is so offended of me dressing up as Juliette and try to cosplay/face model as her character, then obviously you all don't know what cosplay is. (See figure 4). I do not have to give credit to anyone for me dressing up as Juliette Ferrars because one, no one invented that character but Tahereh Mafi herself. If I would give credit to anyone here, it would be the author herself. Two, face claiming/cosplaying/roleplaying a character has been around a long time in different fandoms.
Unless you have a copyright proof of owning the character or owning "cosplay," I do not owe anyone a credit. Just because you dress up as Juliette and roleplay/face claim as her, doesn't mean that you are the only who can do that. It also doesn't mean that you invented that. That is like saying no one can cosplay/face claim as Captain America because some man had done it first, or because they don't look like Chris Evans.
STOP policing the fandom and STOP acting like you're the only who can do it. You can literally check TikTok for people dressing up as Juliette and making videos. (see figure 3).
Also, I'm not the only one who has experienced this type of harassment. I know a few people who have received a message saying they're "copying" someone when all they literally do is dress up as the character from a book.
That is not a crime.
That is not yours to decide to take credit for because you didn't invented that in the first place. (see figure 5).
Tumblr media
(figure 4).
Tumblr media
(figure 5).
II. Bullying and Accusations:
Groupchat. A few people have come up to me saying there's a group chat that was made and certain people were talking vile things about me. Honestly, I don't really care about what you all do or say but really? Are you all really wasting your energy on one person that you all hate? Wasting your energy aiming posts about me? Is that what you like to do in your spare time? I guess if it helps you sleep at night....
Bullying. Stalking my account after I have blocked you is honestly a waste of energy but it's your choice what to do with your time. That's one thing, but body shaming me and taking it too far is something that's vile, disgusting and unacceptable.
I don't condone any form of bullying. I know my own insecurities and my own body and mind. The opinion of others doesn't define me and is not my business. However, as a reminder, I hope you all know that you may think you are having fun talking inadequate words about someone you literally don't know but at the end of the day, I hope you all know that your words reflects the person that you are.
Validation. This connects to the bullying on the above point. I am being accused of seeking validation because I decided to cosplay Juliette. From the beginning, I never expected anyone to even like my posts on instagram nor my tiktok videos. That's not in my control what other people do with their own accounts. I think that some of you need to start trying to figure out what that word actually means because from my end, I never try to stop anyone or judge anyone from dressing up as a character and face claim them (see figure 6). Again, this isn't the first time that someone has dressed up as a book/movie/tv/comic book character and face claims them.
Stalking my account after I have blocked you nor have I voiced out my concerns from the constant harassment and aimed posts... Who do you think is more insecure and need validation? Me or you?
Tumblr media
(figure 6).
III. Communication.
Social Media. Online bullying isn't new in social media anymore. It has been going on for a while now and the toxic environment tend to fuel others to join just to feel validated and be on "trend." However, bullying and stalking someone, especially after you have been blocked is not "cool." It doesn't make you any better nor make you feel better on the inside. At the end of the day, you will be the one who will be left in your own thoughts and think about your actions you have made. Will this be really relevant in your life five to ten years from now? What is your end goal with this?
If you have a problem with me, message me privately and talk to me like a grown adult. Don't accuse and jump into conclusions with no solid proof on your end because that doesn't prove your justification of someone copying you or hating on someone that decided to cosplay Juliette.
IV. Conclusion.
Despite the fact that I hate fueling this drama more and having to say something, I don't have the bandwidth to still focus my attention to others who will hate on me. This is the first and last time I will talk about this. There is a block button that exists if you don't like my posts. There are many options for you to opt me out on your tl or for you page. If you have a problem with me, then reach out and talk to me normally like a grown adult instead of lashing out and stalking my account and pick on every little thing about me.
This blog isn't going to condone any bullying and harassment. I'm not going to deal with high school drama nor want to waste my time on it.
Thank you for taking your time to read this. Again, this is the first and last time I will talk about this. Anyone who comes up and says something to me in an adverse manner, I will block you immediately.

wait. you can ask perfume brands for review bottles and they’ll just… give it to you? like they’ll give it to you for free? and i don’t need to be famous or anything? 😭
Not exactly. You don't have to be 'famous' (I'm certainly not), but you do usually need an established, appropriate following and a history of creating content or reviews about fragrance. For transparency, I have 40,000 followers on TikTok and 40k here, where I've posted about my love for certain perfume brands (like margiela) many times, often getting thousands of likes on videos/photos promoting them. Companies, especially luxury brands, take your previous experience into consideration. I do receive PR regularly, though it's mostly books because that's my primary focus on social media. I've only received fragrance PR a couple of times before (from Libertine and Commodity), and it was product in exchange for review/promotion.
For your reference, here are a few posts featuring my perfume photography that I would send a brand as an example of my interest in receiving a review bottle:

If you had like infinite money and resources what would your dream bug study / research project be about?
ooh, good one. I think I’d do a global review of scutigeromorph systematics and also take a look at the ecological roles they play worldwide. they’re my favorite group of centipedes and so sadly understudied—so many bizarre leggy species out there that need proper names!
aside from that, I’d really love to get a good camera and make a pretty coffee table photography book of beautiful land flatworms from around the world. New Zealand, Brazil, and SE Asia are particular hotspots for platyhelminths more colorful than any exotic birds, and I think more people need to love the worm.
oh, that reminds me I would love to contribute to nature documentaries about under-appreciated inverts. you could get such nice stories out of mother centipedes, soil fauna diversity, dramatic flatworm hunts, and nest-building raspy crickets. need a good video camera someday

Hi, sorry to bother you! I saw one of your reviews, and I’m a person getting back into reading. I was curious in what ways you’ve found work best for finding people and connecting in the writing and reading community as an author? I only use YouTube and Reddit for the most part, but I really find myself wanting to engage more. I have no desire to use twitter or instagram, so I’m kind of at a standstill on where and how to get more involved.
No bother at all!
I personally prefer instagram, because I have a great love of photography and graphic design to go along with my love of words. But that aside, I know there are several authors and readers right here on Tumblr who you could engage with. Also, BookTube is definitely a thing. I don't personally use Youtube, but I have an author friend who regularly tells me about review videos she found on BookTube (the book community on Youtube).
But really book people are everywhere. My recommendation would be to use the search engine on your favorite platform, and look for "book" and see what comes up. On Tumblr the tags you might want are booklr. On TikTok you'd want booktok. On Instagram it's bookstagram. On Youtube I'd try booktube. Not sure about Reddit, but I'm sure there are book people there too!
Another idea might be to try out Fable. I haven't used it extensively myself yet, but I know that app in particular was built for readers to create virtual book clubs. So that feels like it might be a good way to meet other book lovers.
If it's authors, in particular, you're looking to connect with, many of us have our preferred platforms or modes of communication on our websites.
Also reaching out just like this to authors and book lovers is sometimes a really great way to make new friends in the community. Many of my author friends I've made over the years I've made because I ignored my brain when it said, "you're just going to be annoying" and reached out anyway. It doesn't always work out. Sometimes I reach out and am either ignored, or the conversation is off and on. But I've made at least a few friendships who are people I now speak to every day by simply reaching out, saying hi, and talking books with them.
The friend I mentioned above who regularly uses booktube is one of them. We started by my asking her to beta read one of my early works back in 2019. Then we moved on to talking about anime. And now we speak every day about just about anything; work, politics, family.
So you really never know what those connections will lead to, and how they'll last. Sometimes they won't amount to anything. But from what I've seen of the book community, most of us (myself included) just want someone to nerd out with, and don't have those people living near us so we're happy to make new online friends.
I know the community can seem daunting, and huge at times, but trust me, you'll find your people. And I'm more than happy to chat books or craft with you if you want to reach out to me as well.
I hope this helps!

This song is the second collaboration between SUGA/Agust D and IU, after “eight(에잇) (Prod.&Feat. SUGA of BTS)” released in May 2020.
The MV was filmed at South Cape (cr. btsmap1). They used one of the cliff houses for the part in the home and the music library for the part in the studio. During this first part, you can notice decorative fake books and a Danish springy-toy called Hoptimist (src). Thanks to Instagram stories from Nam Hyunwoo and the brand Entre d’eux, we know some of their products were in the bathroom: the nkumba flos or the verte grez hand wash as well as the bitter vitae hand cream.
The black dog appearing in the MV is Nam Hyunwoo’s, the director of photography who’s been working on pretty much every BTS MVs and CFs. Nam himself did a cameo in “The Astronaut” MV.
A Danish ARMY also caught sight of an Hoptimist, a little springy-toy designed by Danish designer Gustav Ehrenreich in 1968 (src).
Glitch Film
Release date: 14 April 2023
The film starts with a calendar from 2016, moving from January to August, passing July twice. The first Agust D mixtape was released on the 16 August, 2016.
The following part mixes extracts of the previous videos so “Agust D” MV, “give it to me” MV and “Daechwita” MV. There are also new elements that seems to relate to D-DAY, including a recorder, birds, dollar bills, and an eye. The video also connects the three human shapes to an MV:

The MV was filmed in Bangkok, notably in a place known as the thieves' market (src). The street scenes were filmed here (src), the hideout of criminal Agust D was here and the tangerine scene happened in a nearby street.
The team also used popular filming locations, namely this deserted building (src) already seen in Jeff Satur’s “Dum Dum” MV and in the Hidden messages video teasing Kinneporsche, as well as the sports complex Nightingale Rama Inthra Club (src) famous for being a shooting location of F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers. Director Lumpens shared his storyboard for the video on Instagram. MU:E did too (#1, #2, #3).
The dragon on SUGA's jacket is a symbol of royalty in Korea (src). It could a nod to "Daechwita" MV. Be it in the MV or in the choreography, SUGA is accompanied by 6 extra, reminding of the 6 other members of BTS.
Nam Hyunwoo, director of photography for all BTS MVs and some CFs, makes a cameo as a policeman in the background.

As for the filming location, it was at the basketball court of the Juam-dong Sports Park and in a street nearby.
@btswingsjm7 noticed that one of the shirt Agust D wears is from Ludovic de Saint Sernin’s collection, about the duality between one’s self image and the public preconceptions..

During the scene in front of the 202 flat, we can see custom-made flyers with phone numbers that mix the digits of SUGA’s birthday (9th March, 1993). The flyers on the door advertise delivery for Korean chicken, food and Hit Shopping products, with special promotions for Chuseok (Hit Shopping could be a nod to Big Hit). The flyer on the whole is for internet contracts and the one below is for a washing service. Concerning the little stickers they’re all locksmiths’ name and phone number.

Newsletter #55: The importance of James Kaliardos - more than a makeup artist
This week’s podcast was all about beauty news, and included a special section on the brilliance of makeup artist James Kaliardos. It all started with Lori Harvey getting ready for Vogue World on YouTube…
When IT Girl Lori looks over at her makeup artist, James Kaliardos, she simply introduces him as ‘James, my makeup artist.’ Which makes sense; Lori can afford the absolute best when it comes to her glam squad, and she does not owe anyone any credit, but I decided to use my podcast to create an extra episode, just so I could share a little information on James’ career, which began back in the 1990s.
I also created a TikTok on James and it’s received such good feedback from people who had either never heard of him before, or were glad to be reminded of his influence. Of course, there were a couple of comments saying that I’m unfairly ‘coming for Lori’ or ‘feigning annoyance’ and it’s not true at all. I was kind of annoyed, not at Lori - just at the missed opportunity.
It feels like, in 2022, information (often incorrect information at that) is shared without even a second being spent on adding a little context. When you’re in a position of influence, you have the ability to really celebrate someone’s work. In this instance, a high profile client is paying someone for a service and they don’t owe any public reviews or endorsements, but for me, James Kaliardos is highly influential, and not just in beauty. Here are just some of the reasons why…
New York-based James studied at the prestigious Parsons School of Design, where he focused on art history, photography, theatre and film, a decision which absolutely would have inspired him to go on to be one of the founders of the legendary Visionaire, a fashion-forward so-called experiential agency that produces films, events and publications. Launched in 1991 alongside Cecelia Dean and Stephen Gan, Visionaire has earned itself a reputation for highlighting the most interesting moments and people in fashion, art and film. They’ll often create these stunning themed issues with some costing as much as $1,000 and there was one special Louis Vuitton issue that went for $5,000.
Visionaire also launched one of my favourites, the highly influential V magazine in 1999, VMan in 2003 and former editor in chief of Vogue Paris, Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book in 2012. In 2014 the initial trio split, so today Cecelia and James run the company and the title Visionaire, while Stephen retained V and VMan.
James is also highly respected in the beauty world, and is often the artist that brands either want to collaborate with on a new range, or have backstage creating catwalk looks. We’re talking MAC, Nars, Tom Ford, Fenty Beauty, Makeup Forever – the list goes on it comes to makeup launches that have changed the face of beauty.
He’s worked on movies, music videos and his work has been seen in publications from Vogue to Allure and his celebrity clientele has taken him from working with Madonna in the ‘90s to Miley Cyrus, and of course, Lori Harvey. I think it’s all down to James’ highly attuned editorial eye; he simply knows what works and he creates looks that are super impactful but never fussy or overly-done.
One thing I personally love about James’ style, is that he’s never been a fan of a prescribed idea of prettiness; as he said in a 2016 interview for thekit.ca, he’s always been more into the girls who look even better than pretty – it’s about looking interesting and that looks different on everyone. So that’s that on James; I just wanted to share a little bit about who he is, just in case you happened to see his work with Lori Harvey. Lori might be an It girl but James is IT when it comes to beauty and innovation.

Photographers Charleston
How To Find The Perfect Wedding Photographers For Your Big Day
Your wedding day is one of the most significant moments in your life, and capturing those memories is important. Finding the best wedding photographers Charleston can make all the difference. Here’s a guide to help you find the right photographer for your special day.
Define Your Style
Before you search for a photographer, it’s crucial to determine what style of photography you prefer. Do you like traditional posed photos, candid moments, or a more artistic approach?
Look at different photography styles online or in wedding magazines to understand what you like. Once you have a clear vision, finding a photographer who specializes in that style will be easier.
Tumblr media
Set Your Budget
Wedding photography can be a significant expense, so setting a budget early on is essential. Photographers Charleston offer a range of packages, so decide how much you’re willing to spend and what you expect to get for your money.
Remember that higher prices often reflect more experience and better quality, but there are talented photographers at every price point.
Do Your Research
Personal referrals can be beneficial, so ask your friends and family for recommendations. Look for wedding photographers near me on online directories, websites, and social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest.
Look at photographers’ portfolios to see if their work matches your vision. Pay attention to reviews and testimonials to get a sense of their reputation.
Meet In Person
Once you have a shortlist of potential photographers, arrange to meet them in person or via a video call. This meeting is an opportunity to see if you have a good rapport with the photographer.
You’ll be spending a lot of time with them on your wedding day, so it’s essential that you feel comfortable and confident in their abilities.
Ask The Right Questions
Remember to create a list of questions to pose during your meeting. Some critical questions include:
• How many weddings have you photographed?
• Can we see a full wedding gallery?
• What packages do you offer, and what is included in each?
• How do you handle unexpected situations like bad weather or equipment failure?
• How much time do you generally take to deliver the photos?
Check Their Availability
Popular photographers book up quickly, sometimes a year or more in advance. Make sure that your selected photographer is available on your wedding date. If your wedding date is flexible, you may have more options to choose from.
Review The Contract
Before signing any agreement, carefully review the contract. Ensure it includes all the details you’ve discussed, such as the date, hours of coverage, number of edited photos, and any additional costs. Also, check the cancellation policy and what happens if the photographer is unable to attend.
Tumblr media
Trust Your Instincts
Finally, trust your instincts. If you feel confident and excited about a photographer, it’s likely a good fit. Your wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and you want someone to capture it beautifully and authentically.
Conclusion
Finding the perfect wedding photographers in Charleston is worth the time and effort to capture your memories perfectly.
By defining your style, setting a budget, doing thorough research, and meeting with potential photographers, you can find someone who will document your big day in a way that reflects your unique love story.
If you are looking for timeless, romantic images that capture the essence of your Portrait photographers Charleston, Jolie Connor Photography might be the perfect fit.

Tumblr media
If you are looking for an amazing Photography location in Berlin, Garten Der Welt is one of the best places where you can take photos and videos for your Professional project or even for your Instagram. See more photos in my gallery. In Garten der welt you can explore the world. They have a garden from all around the world with unique architecture.  For example international Asian Garden, Christian Garden, Balinese   Garden, Japanese Garden, Chinese Garden, and Oriental Islamic Garden. I need my shoot in an Oriental Islamic garden with beautiful ceramics and architecture.

I love the blue, white, green, and black combinations on these ceramics. This ceramic called "Zillij" This word is used for Moroccan ceramics which are used in gardens and arcades of gardens. In the past because of Islamic beliefs, painting and showing humans or animals was forbidden, artists only used forms of colors and calligraphy.

Map- Garten Der Welt On the website, you can make your own plan and download it.

Photography Location in Berlin Garten Der Welt Backstage Video Photography Location in Berlin Garten Der Welt backstage video. Here you can see a short video from my shooting: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5jFutV6EB0E Camera For this shoot, I used my old Canon 6D camera with my 70-200 Canon F/2.8L III IS USM and my Analog Canon AE1 with 50mm Lens. I have so many Cameras like the Sony a7 mark3, Canon 5Ds, and Sony a7 Mark4. But all of these cameras are high quality and give me a high file size (50MG) for each photo. This is too much for the photos, which will be used only online. The advantage of Canon 6D is Wi-Fi connection to my mobile phone. Sometimes after shooting, I could have reviewed my photos from a bigger screen. I use the Canon EOS Utility app on my iPhone. Here you can see how to use the app. For my bigger productions, every time, I'm tattering the photos to the computer by using capture one.

For the list of photography and videography locations in Berlin, visit my post, I have some more spots. And this is me in this beautiful location in Berlin. Don't forget, this location for production is not free, and you need to book and pay for it. Please contact me if you have any questions.

The Art of Photography, photobooks
youtube
Ted Forbe has a youtube account called The Art of Photography where he reviews photobooks and explains how effectively constructed they were through a theme, repeating pattern or layout. I don't have experience with creating a photobook so his videos help me gain an idea of what could my book look like.
My favourite of the books he presented was India, a photographic essay by Shhourya Ray. The layout and photos complement each other well, featuring portraits, candid shots, and magnum contact sheets. I liked how Shourya Ray employed portraits to capture his subjects, and I was curious to see how he laid out his photographs. Demonstrating how photos can be powerful on their own or as pair and how I could showcase my book's concept without always having two photo pages next to each other. This prompted me to inspect my photographs, selecting them based on connecting and building my concept on its own and as part of a series.
Tumblr media
youtube
In the video Storytelling with Photography, Ted Forbe showcased more photobooks. He explained how "From the Bronx to Berlin and Beyond worked well to tell an amazing narrative. He stated it felt like a movie and "if you look at this collection of photographs, there's really nothing extraneous. Everything belongs to the project, and I think that's really important; it gives it clarity and unity. It's very well-paced as you go throughout the book."This quote helped me to understand what I wanted people to feel and see when they looked at my photographs.
I want viewers to feel like they were there on the day I took the images, bringing the energy to life as you flip through the pages. Due to this, I stepped back from my draft photobook and ask Does this image communicate my concept well? Is it necessary to crop and zoom in to highlight the laughter? Do these photographs complement each other in the layout? Are they capable of standing on their own? Is this image necessary, or do I like it?

speaking of cameras! what is your best recommendation for someone with no official experience in photography who wants a nice camera that can be taken easily around for vacations (the beach, different cities) and for photos of friends/loved ones? so nothing overly complicated, and nothing too fancy. i get so caught up in reading reviews and then idk which one is the "right" one. i really want to buy something good but not more fancy/complicated than what i need. also for some context, i don't want to edit anything and the computer i have is a mac book laptop. idk if that factors into it. thank you soooo much for any recs you can give!
i'm gonna preface this by saying that i'm not an expert on digital cameras, but honestly, i think most cameras nowadays, especially once you get into the high hundreds-thousands euro range are quite good. i think it comes down to what you need. for example, do you want to be able to change lenses or do you want a fixed lens? do you want to also do video? how much money are you willing to spend? should it be small or can it be bigger? do you want a viewfinder or is a screen enough? more than model, i think you need to figure out what you want out of a camera! for example, i knew i wanted something compact but capable, where i can change lenses, and i liked the film camera look of fujifilm, so that narrowed it down for me.
i would definitely suggest an interchangeable lens system if you might wanna branch out in the future and get more creative with photography. first, because you can then try out different focal lengths, and also get more creative with larger apertures on higher resolution cameras. some that seem good (and are not too expensive) are the canon m50, the sony a6000 line, nikon z30, sony zv-e10 and the fujifilm xt30. you could also look into micro four thirds cameras by olympus or lumix (smaller sensor than most common changeable lens cameras, but i've heard good things and they're much smaller usually). you could also always look for slightly older models if you want to save money, as cameras from the past couple of years will still be more than enough for casual shooting. what i would suggest though is no longer buying a dslr, but going for a mirrorless system; they're smaller, lighter and you can see in camera what your picture will look like as you take it.
however, these can sometimes be more expensive, usually bigger, and lenses are also an extra investment. if you want something with a fixed lens and that is just for snapshots of family and vacation, i would look for a compact camera. i'm not an expert here and i'm more familiar with premium models such as the fujifilm x100v or the ricoh gr iii, which are between 1000-1500€, so a big investment for casual shooting. from the little research i just did, there seem to be some good cameras out there from sony and canon, especially. one thing i would say is that idk how capable regular compact cameras are and whether they're going to be a significant improvement over a phone camera.
my biggest suggestion is to go to a camera store and try cameras out! see what feels best in your hands, what makes sense to you and which you find the easiest to handle. you can then also see if the image quality is what you want. cameras are such a tactile thing where, at least for me, i can usually tell the minute i hold one in my hands if it's for me or not.
i hope this helps in some way, but if you have more questions, let me know!

Podcasts and Blogs. (8/22/14)
So if you were someone who knows me in person (or read a few posts of mine about a year or two ago), you would know that I listen to quite a few podcasts. And by a few I mean a lot. If you don't know what podcasts are, they are audio/video "talk shows". At least that's how I would describe them. I listen to knitting podcasts (shocker!), but I also listen to some book theme, news, photography, film, cooking, and pop culture ones. Now note that I listen to a lot of podcast and I like to listen to the older episodes if they are in my iTunes or if I can find them, which means I'm not caught up with most of them yet. But the ones I am caught up with I'll tell you about them (if they have a description on iTunes, I'll post what they say), give you a brief review, and let you know if they're still updating their feeds.
Podcasts that I recommend
Start Cooking- This podcast is short 5 minutes or more video showing you how to make certain recipes and new tips and tricks. I really like how the women explains each step clearly and she tells you some things you can replace other foods with. I'm not sure if this feed is up to date, I haven't gotten a new episode from this one in a while and I might have to go to the iTunes store page to update it my self.
Film Riot- "Film Riot is a how-to trip through filmmaking from the hyper-active mind of Ryan Connolly. From how to make great effects to following Triune Films through production, Film Riot explores the art of filmmaking in a way you've never seen."They have two episodes a week one on Mondays; where they answer questions and recommend a short video, and one on Thrusdays; where they review a new product/show how they do a certain effect/talk about a new short film they released. This is one that I make sure that I'm getting all the new episodes. The host and the camera man make the show very entertaining and interesting. Even though I don't do anything with film making I still find everything interesting.  If you want to know more about this podcast, they are on iTunes and Youtube. They also have a Twitter account.
CaffeinatedKnitting-  "Talk about knitting, spinning and crochet." The hostess is from TN, which was one reason why I checked her out, but I really enjoy her show. I'm always interested in what she talks about and love everything she makes. WARNING: She is an enableer, big time. Every time she shows some new yarn or fiber I get a major case of grabby hands. She updates as much as she can, to know when there is a new episode join her Raverly group and/or blog. Also follow here on Twitter.
The Knitting Den- "A weekly podcast about knitting, spinning and lots of girl chatter." Another lovely hostess, she also is really interesting and a big enabler. She sews project bags and creates some beautiful stitch markers, and she has an esty shop where she sells them. To contact her, join her Raverly group and her Youtube channel.
A Night Bird- "A video podcast about kntting, crafting and homemaking through the seasons." This is a monthly podcast based in Germany. The hostess talks about what has happened with her crafty wise in the past month.(Knitting, sewing, etc.) She is such a lovely lady, part of me wishes she would podcast more then just monthly, but hey people have their own lives it can't be about knitting all the time. To contact her, join her Ravelry group and check out her blog.
KnitBritish- "Sharing woolly notions!" This too is a monthly podcast by Louise Scollay, who obviously is British. She's been knitting with only local British wool and she talks about how she does it in her podcast. To contact her, join her Ravelry group and check out her blog.
Knitting Butterflies- "Join me for my adventures in knitting, crochet, spinning, photography, and of course, parenting." The is a some what new podcast. I enjoy hearing about the hostess's projects and other adventures, and hearing her photography tips. To contact her: join her Ravelry group, follow her on Instagram, and her blog.
SkeinAfterSkein- "Yarn! GIMME YARN! NOW! YARN! YARN! YARN! GIMME! NOW!" This podcast was really fun to listen to, but there hasn't been a new episode in a few months. Just two friends talking about all their projects from knitting, crochet, and sewing. To contact them: join their Ravelry group and/or their blog.
This American Life-"Official free, weekly podcast of the award-winning radio show 'This American Life.' First-person stories and short fiction pieces that are touching, funny, and surprising. Hosted by Ira Glass, from WBEZ Chicago Public Media, and distributed by Public Radio International. In mp3 and updated Mondays." Well, the iTunes description pretty much sums up everything. The short stories they tell are really entertaining and fascinating. If you enjoying hearing people tell their stories then you will enjoy this podcast. You can find this on iTunes.
A Homespun House- "Homespun knitting podcast is hosted by your friend Molly. Stop by every Thursday for chatter, knit-a-longs, project sharing, questions, and your own personal enjoyment !!!!" Molly is an american living in Germany and she is super sweet. I really enjoy hearing about her love of knitting and making handmade things. To contact her, join her Ravelry group and/or check out her blog. To watch this podcast find it on iTunes or Youtube.
NPR: Snap Judgment Podcast- "Snap Judgment is the smoking-hot new show from NPR. Winner of the Public Radio Talent Quest, Gylnn Washington delivers a raw, musical brand of storytelling, daring listeners to see the world through the eyes of another." Also another descirption that pretty much tells you everything about the podcast. Again if you love storytelling, then this podcast is for you. You can find it on iTunes.
Books on the Nightstand-"A conversational podcast about books, from two longtime veterans of the publishing industry. If you love to read, this podcast is for you. Listen in to hear what's new, what's great, and the books we just can't stop talking about." This is one of my favorite podcasts, it definitely is my favorite book podcast. I highly suggest you to check them out. To contact them: join their Goodreads group, their website, and follow them on Twitter.
NPR Programs" Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! Podcast- "NPR's weekly current events quiz. Have a laugh and yest your news knowledge while figuring out what's real and what we've made up." This is pretty much my favorite news podcasts. It's super funny, I love it. You can find it on iTunes.
Yarncraft- "Join us for a knitting and crochet talk show, brought to you by Lion Brand Yarn Company. Featuring persona stories, pattern recommendations, and interviews with industry insiders including expert teachers, designers, and artists. Stop by twice a month for new content. Find show notes at http://yarncraft.lionbrand.com!" This was a really nice podcast about the Lion Brand Company, but they no longer release new episodes. If you want to listen to the older episodes find this podcast on iTunes.
NPR: Books Podcast- "NPR book reviews, news and author interviews -- for people who love to read. The best of Morning Edition, All Things Considered and other award-winning NPR programs." This is my second favorite book podcast. It's shorter then Books on the Nightstand but you still get a lot of information. You can find this podcast on iTunes.
CRAFTCAST- "On Craftcast.com, host Alison Lee takes you through the world of Crafting, from interviews, product reviews, and do it yourself tutorials. Craftcast.com is the only podcast where you can listen, learn, and create!" I've learned about a lot of other crafts from this podcast over the years. She hasn't posted a new episode in a while but she does every once in a while. You can find this podcast on iTunes.
Stash and Burn- "Nicole and Jenny, two San Francisco knitters, talk about yarn, books, patterns, blogs, and ways to deal with life under the weight of the stash. Jenny has been knitting since 2005 and Nicole's had work on the needles since 2002. Join the duo as they get together each week to talk about the subject that consumes them." I really like this podcast, it was one of the first knitting podcasts I had listened to. They don't podcast as much as they just to but when they do I really enjoy everything they say. To contact them: join their Ravelry group.
Drum Corps International Field Pass- "Drum Corps International (DCI) is the world leader in producing events for the world's most elite and exclusive marching ensembles for student musicians and performers. Field Pass presented by Zildjian is Drum Corps International's official podcast featuring award-winning host Dan Potter. With fresh episodes available daily throughout the summer on iTunes and DCI.org, Field Pass gives you an inside look at Marching Music's Major League; from the parking lot, to the stadium tunnel to the 50-yard line!" Of course I would listen to this. I've listened to this since I found it my 10th year in high school. Being in Marching band I loved this and still love it. It makes me miss band more and more I listen to it. To find this podcast, follow the links in the description above.
Knit Picks' Podcast- "Kelley Petkun, owner of Knit Picks, carries on a one-side conversation as she ponders the joys, challenges and rewards of complete immersion in today's fiber community. Find camaraderie and understanding as Knit Picks employees confess to their own knitting triumphs and complete blunders. Does any of this sound fimiliar? If so, tune in weekly for the further adventures of the gang at Knit Picks and any other knitter we can round up." This is like Yarncraft. Kelley no longer hosts but the employees try to release a podcast when they can. You can find this podcast on iTunes.
Alohomora!-"Alohomora! is an interactive and creative collaborative project between fans world wide and MuggleNet staff. Join us as we re-read the entire series, spin wild theories, and share content all influenced by our love of Harry Potter." I love Harry Potter, so I really love this podcast. They are currently on book five. If you want to join the re-read find this podcast on iTunes and follow them on Twitter.
Stuff You Missed in History Class- "What's the story of Andrew's Raid, also known as the Great Locomotive Chase? Join Holly and Tracy as they bring you the greatest and strangest Stuff You Missed In History Class in this podcast by HowStuffWorks.com." The title is pretty much what you would expect for the podcast. If you want to heard about something you may have not known about something, then give the podcast a listen. You can find this podcast on iTunes.
Since this is already a pretty long list I'm going to stop here for right now. Look for the next list soon and if you decided to check any of these podcasts out, let them know where you heard about them from.
Happy Listening!Sam<3

Liked on YouTube: Colleen Hoover BROKE ME || https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRfTcHBJQHE || SPOILERS AHEAD! This Colleen Hoover book, It Ends With Us, leaves me with SO MANY THOUGHTS. Today, ahead of the film version's release, I'm reviewing the book and sharing my thoughts on this absolute mess. If you'd like some recommendations for fictional books which deal with similar topics (although not specifically DV) in a sensitive way I'd recommend My Dark Vanessa - Kate Elizabeth Russell and The Girls of Summer - Katie Bishop. They're not only incredibly well-written but both show how these kinds of men can be so convincing that even their victims don't realise what is happening to them but at the same time, neither book ever glamourises or condones their behaviour. Mass Effect development insights and highlights from Bioware: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development
This is the Mass Effect version of this post.
Tumblr media
[In case you can’t read it the subtitle in the bottom left logo above is “Guardians of the Citadel”]
Note: Drug use is mentioned.
Cut for length.
Mass Effect 1
ME began its life in a vision document in fall 2003
Codenamed “SFX”
Conceived of by Casey Hudson and a core team from KotOR. Its genesis was the intention to create an epic sci-fi RPG in an original setting that BioWare owned (so they could have full creative control), and in a setting that was conceived of first and foremost as a video game
Initially players could control any squadmate, but they wanted it to be about Shep and for players to be focused on Shep being a battlefield commander, rather than on switching bodies
By the start of 2004 its story was shaping up. Initially humans landed on Mars in 2250 and discovered evidence of an ancient alien race and a powerful substance, Black Sand, which rapidly advanced tech to the point that FTL travel was possible. (My note: obviously now the Prothean artifacts on Mars & associated mass effect force tech enabled this in the final canon, but I wonder if aspects of the ‘Black Sand’ naming-type & powerful substance stuff was rolled into red sand from final canon) Humans were suddenly capable of travel to multiple star systems and made contact with a multitude of other species. At the start of the first game, these species together with humans had a fragile peace, with focus placed on the political center of the galaxy, a hub known as Star City, later renamed the Citadel
Multiplayer was a vision for the series as far back as 2003. The plan was for ME1, an Xbox exclusive at launch, to take advantage of the platform’s online components. Early designs saw players meeting in one of the central hubs to interact and trade items in their otherwise SP adventures
By 2006 it had the name ME and the story was more specific, with the theme of conflict between organic and synthetic lifeforms. The story’s scope now stretched across 3 games and included scope for full co-op MP
They tried to do MP in every game, discussing it from the get-go, but it always just fell by the wayside. “When you’re trying to build something that is a new IP, on a new platform, with a new engine, you’ve got to really focus on the core elements of the game.”
The conversation system prototype was made in Jade Empire, and some of ME’s earliest writing was done in an old JE build. At first there was no conversation wheel. Paragon was “Friendly” and Renegade “Hostile”. In the prototype Shep was a silent unnamed Spectre. Many conversations in the prototype about the player’s choice in smuggling a weapon through Noveria made it into the game
In said prototype a merchant referred to themselves as “this one”, though the word hanar never appeared. The PC in it also had the option to end a conversation with “I should go”. In the prototype also, Harkin was voiced by Mark Meer
An early version of the Mako got used as the krogan truck in ME2
Early concepts of the Citadel were drawn in pencil by CH. A piece of concept art of its final design was painted based on a photo of a sculpture near Aswan, Egypt
As with any new IP naming it was a struggle. They put out a call to all staff for ideas, did polls, made a name generator that combined words that they liked in random ways and made pretend logos of ones they liked in Photoshop to see if they could make themselves love the name or find visual potential in it. (Some of these names are in the pic at the top of this post.) CH liked “Unearthed” as it was a reference to Prothean ruins dug up on Mars and humanity’s ascendance going away from Earth. They knew the game would have a central space station featuring prominently so some of the ideas were based on that - “The Citadel”, “The Optigon”, “The Oculon”. “Element” was another one they had in mind due to the rare substance in the game
CH: “I was a big fan of John Harris’ book Mass, which had epic-scaled sci-fi ideas, so that was a word that came up often. Many of the names came from the idea that the IP featured a fifth fundamental physical force (in addition to the known four of gravitational, electromagnetic, strong nuclear and weak nuclear) so the word ‘effect’ came up pretty often.” Ultimately none of the ideas really felt right. One Monday morning they were going over the names and Greg Zeschuk said he had an idea on the weekend: “Mass Effect!” CH: “I said, ‘I don’t hate it’, which in the naming process is a high compliment. And it stuck!”
CH on Shep’s Prothean vision from the beacon: “It was hard to imagine how we would do this. CG was - and is - really expensive. Instead I wanted to try doing it through photography and video editing. So I went to a local grocery store and bought a few packages of the weirdest looking meat that I could find. Then I set up a little photoshoot in my basement, complete with some electronics parts and some red wine for juicyness.” He used these props to create a video sequence where the photos were rapidly cycled and blurred, along with production paintings, to create the scary vision an organic/machine experiment on the Protheans. These mashups were also used as inspiration for concept artists and level designers who were working on these themes
Tali used to be called Talsi
On the licensing side they often joke that they’re licensing N7 not “Mass Effect” due to N7′s popularity
There was a confidential internal guide to the IP in 2007 to help devs along and summarize/synthesize the vision etc. Some excerpts from it are shown in the book and this is the first time the public have ever seen them
Early versions of Asari had hair
Asari were designed as a nod to classic TV sci-fi (with human actors wearing obvious makeup and prosthetics to play aliens)
The turian design guideline was “we want them to be birds of prey”. They also wanted a range of alien types, some close to human like Asari, while others were to be a lot further away, like turians
BioWare patented the conversation wheel, which was a first for them. CH had been frustrated with reviews of Jade Empire that said that the actioncentric game was too wordy [with its list dialogue]. “I’m like, story is words. [...] What is it about our games that is making people feel like they’re wordy?” Then he thought “In a game you kind of need to feel like you’re continuing to play it. Maybe you should continue feeling like you’re playing it actively into the dialogue.” “[The wheel] kind of gave a new experience with dialogue when you did start to react based on emotion, and that’s ultimately what we’re trying to bring out in our games”
The original krogan concept was based on a bat “with a really wide squidgy face. We just used its face on top of this weird body and it kinda worked”
Geth musculature was based on fiber-optic cables, with flexible plates of armor attached
The vision for the IP was 80s sci-fi inspired space opera
The concept art of Saren lifting Shep by the throat inspired a similar scene in-game. The staging wasn’t planned til designers saw that art
A squadmate with Shepard on the way to meet Ash in an old storyboard was called Carter. Early name of Kaidan or Jenkins?
Bono from U2 was kinda instrumental in bringing us ME lol
Finding the right cover art for ME1 was notably tricky
Matt Rhodes got his start drawing helmets for ME1, including one which would become Shep’s “second face”. He estimates he drew between 250-270 different ones
Some of the sounds in-game were people smashing watermelons with sledgehammers and sticking fists into various goos
The audio team had fun trying to slip the iconic main theme into unexpected places throughout the MET. “We were very aware of how powerful that track was for the fans and it was tempting to overuse it for any moment we wanted to make really emotional”.
The theme was creatively repurposed in ME3: slowed down and reworked as the ambient sound for the SR-2. “If you listen to it for a really long time, just stand in the Normandy and listen, you’ll actually hear the notes change slowly. It doesn’t sound like music, it sounds like a background ambiance, but it’s there.” (My note: Well no wonder the Normandy feels so much like home?? 😭 sneaky..)
Bug report: “Mako Tornado”. There wasn’t enough friction between the tires and the ground, causing testers to lose control of the vehicle and send it spinning into the air like a tornado. “As it turns, the front end comes up, and then it starts spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning faster and faster and faster until it just flies up in the sky” (My note: Sounds like a regular day in the Mako to me)
Cerberus originally had a bigger role in this game. It was cut but they had a whole explorable outpost. “I called it Misery,” says Mac Walters, “It was this planet with a little outpost that said ‘Welcome to Misery’”. Everything on the outpost was shit - dirty worn stuff, no windows, no kitchen, the vehicle bay was open to the elements etc
The Reaper sound is literal garbage. Some audio designers went on a recording trip to a national park. One of them got fixated on a garbage can, “a metal bear-proof receptacle with a heavy lid that creaked horribly when opened”. “It was like, ominous, spooky, tonal and almost musical. I decided to throw a mic into the garbage and record it moving. I didn’t know what it was going to be until later”
They were making lots of noises to record like throwing logs and rocks around. An old couple peered at them through the window of their camper van in the woods and must have called the cops because then the cops showed up, pulled them over and told them to stop. The cops towed their car (the driver’s plates were Cali plates and expired), drove them to Edmonton outskirts and then the audio producer Shauna got a call and had to go pick them up “like three little boys”. “We got a stern talking to”. Once back they were playing around with the garbage sound, editing it etc. Casey heard it and proclaimed “That’s the sound of the Reapers”
Preston Watamaniuk: “There are things I could have done to Mass 1 to make it an infinitely better game with better UIs” and some simple cuts and changes. “But when you’re living with it, it’s very hard to see those things”
BioWare Labs
As social media and smartphone games exploded, BioWare dedicated a small team dedicated to exploring opportunities here - BioWare Labs
Mass Effect: Galaxy used a unique graphic art style and static visual presentation common in visual novels. It has the distinction of being the only iOS game BW have made during their first 25 years
Scrapped ideas were a 3rd person space shooter called Mass Effect: Corsair and 2 DA titles - a strategy game and a top-down dungeon crawler starring young Wynne. (My note: Maybe the corsairs stuff was rolled into Jacob’s backstory in 2, the Alliance Corsairs)
Corsair was a very short-lived project that never got its feet under it. It was a spin-off on Nintendo DS featuring a behind-the-ship perspective and branching dialogue. At one point it had MP. The idea behind it was basically “ME: Freelancer” - fly your ship around, do missions, get credits. It had a limited branching story but was a gameplay-centered experience intended to fill the gap between ME1 and 2. That gap ended up being filled by Galaxy
Galaxy and Corsair’s smaller screen allowed concept artists to use bold colors and a simplistic character design style to help those games stand out from Shep’s story
Nick Thornborrow did some art for Corsair but was worried his art style didn’t fit ME. He moved to DA where he feels his art style fits better
Lots of BioWare VAs and even a lead writer and the VO director are drawn from Edmonton’s local community theater scene, which is vibrant. Think this is how Mark Meer got involved
Mass Effect 2
Player choices carrying over was a first for BW
Dirty Dozen-inspired plot
Its plot is a web of conditionals (see Suicide Mission)
Was more of a shooter than anything BW had made since Shattered Steel
There was 2 camps on the team, those who wanted to push combat and systems forward and redefine the ME experience and those who wanted to make a true sequel, with the same gameplay and systems but a new story. Karin Weekes: “I think it ended up being a good push-pull. It felt like a pretty healthy creative conflict”
“ME2 was a game you could hold up to someone who argues that games aren’t a serious medium and go ‘Oh yeah, then why is Martin Sheen in this?’” Sheen was their first pick for TIM
The idea for TIM came from a mash-up of concepts CH had collected over the years. The name “Illusive” originally came from his pitch for naming DAO’s Eclipse engine, a word inspired by Obi-Wan’s line “It’s not about the mission, Master. It’s something... elsewhere. Elusive”. “I thought, what if we called our next engine 'Elusive', but used an ‘I’, and then it’s like ‘Illusion’. [...] I still really like the word with an ‘I’ and what it conjures”
When ME1 DLC was in production, CH had been watching a lot of CNN, specifically Anderson Cooper. “How is one guy travelling to all these places and never looking tired and always being able to speak with clarity?” CH says it seemed almost superhuman. “What if there was someone who is the absolute maximum of the things you would aspire to be, but also the worst of humanity?” Cooper, though not evil, became an inspiration for TIM down to the gray hair and piercing blue eyes
Inspiration for TIM’s behind-the-scenes role pulling political strings came from Jack Bauer’s brother Graem in 24. Graem “can call up the president and tell him what to do and hang up, because he’s so connected and so influential”. Sheen had played a president and his performance brought gravitas and wisdom to the role. He had quit smoking, but the character smokes. He didn’t want to fake it, but he also didn’t want to smoke, “so he actually asked for a cigarette” to hold so he could stop his words to take drags with natural cadence
Writing was still pushing to write and revise lines hours before VO started. A series of problems like injury and some writers leaving for other opportunities left it so that Karin, Lukas Kristjanson and editor Cookie Everman hand to land the story safely, with PW helping where they could. Lukas: “We took over the writing bug and task list, and I can’t stress enough how much [Karin and Cookie] did to get ME2 out the door. There’s no part of that thing we didn’t touch”. Karin: “That was the most dramatic 2 weeks of my life”
Initial fan reaction when they started promo-ing ME2 was very negative because people didn’t want to know about new chars like Jack and Mordin. “[fans were like] ‘Get them out of here. We want our characters from the first game’. But then when they played them, those became some of the most popular chars [of the series]”
Concept art of Thane has an idea annotation saying “Face can shapeshift?”
At one point when designing Thane concept artists sent multiple variations of him to the team asking them to vote on which was the most attractive
Most of the Normandy crew was written by lead level designer Dusty Everman. Lukas gave him advice in the evenings between bugs
BioWare Montreal made ME2 and 3 cinematics
CC for Shep was based on tools used by char designers to create in-game chars. Under the hood similar tools existed to create aliens
Aliens were much easier to animate than humans. When something is human it’s very difficult to make it look realistic and you can see all the mistakes and everything
Over the holiday period in 2007 CH worked out a diagram on a single piece of paper that would define the entire scope and structure of the game. The diagram is included in the book
Bug report: “I shot a krogan so hard that his textures fell off”. At one point shotgun blast damage was applied to each of the pellets fired, and shot enemies ended up with just the default checkerboard Unreal texture on them after their textures got blown off
Blasto was meant to be 1 step above an Easter egg but his fan popularity prompted them to bring him back in ME3
They rewrote chunks of Jack 2 days before she went to VO. She was the only one they could change because all the other NPCs were recorded. They redesigned her mission by juggling locked NPC lines and changing Shep’s reactions by rewriting text paraphrases to change the context of the already-recorded VO
Lukas snuck obscure nods ito ME2′s distress calls. In the general distress call for the Hugo Gernsback, there’s BW’s initial’s and Edmonton’s phone number backwards. In a fault in a beacon protocol there’s the initials and backward phone number from Tommy Tutone’s “Jenny”. In 2 other general distress calls there’s initials and numbers from Glenn Miller Orchestra’s “Pennsylvania 6-5000″ and initials and numbers from Geddy Lee and Rush’s “2112″ respectively
Mass Effect 3
“The end of an era marks the beginning of another”
ME3 “marked the end of Shep’s story”
Saying bye to Shep was as difficult for devs as it was for players
JHale’s final VO session included Anderson’s death and romanced Garrus’ goodbye. “We were in the session and we both just started crying”, Caroline says. “I couldn’t come on the line to give her notes because I was crying, and she was crying. And so there was just this minute-long pause of like, nothing, nothing, nothing - just silence through the airwaves. And then I came on and just told her that I was crying and she said ‘I’m crying!’” They talked about these anecdotes also here on the N7 Day reunion panel
The Microsoft Kinect voice support required devs to teach Kinect hundreds of commands in a variety of accents across multiple languages. The result was useful but made for some awkward moments. Numerous players accidentally said “geth” or “quarian” while making a particular decision and accidentally killed Tali
MP chars were voiced by cops and military people
The helmet on one of the MP chars was originally designed for cancelled project Revolver
The payload device at the end needed to attach to the Citadel while essentially serving as a giant trigger. “It ended up becoming quite the engineering feet just to visualize how this thing would move and connect to the Citadel”
Concept artists explored creating an anti-team, where Kai Leng was almost an anti-Shepard essentially, with an elite squad to counteract your team. This idea never went beyond concept phase
ME3 Special Edition was released on Nintendo Wii U exclusively. This exclusive version of the game includes Genesis 2 (a sequel to the original Genesis comic) and unique gameplay features that took advantage of the touchscreen GamePad. For years Sonic Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood had had the honor of being BW’s only game made for a Nintendo console
FemShep regrettably didn’t feature in major ME marketing til ME3. Later releases like DAI, MEA and Anthem have taken increasing care not to gender their protagonists in cover art
To capture combat sounds they took a trip to CFB Wainwright, a military base southeast of Edmonton. They got a big tour of it and were allowed to record anything they could find. The tour ended with them getting to drive and shoot tanks (real shells). The force of doing that sent waves through Joel Green, he felt his whole chest compress when it went off; the perfect sound for the Black Widow! After the trip the soldiers let him keep the shell he fired and it’s been passed on like a torch to various devs since
Kakliosaurs began life as a joke in the writers’ room after John Dombrow placed a Grunt figure on a t-rex toy he had on his desk. Lore was brainstormed to justify the mash-up before someone asked, “Why don’t we put this in the game?” They loved it so much Karin had custom coffee mugs made
Bug report: For a while Tali’s final romance scene would fire when she was supposed to be dead
“Balancing combat: how designers in ME3 entered an ‘arms race’” - the solution to players feeling OP vs players feeling frustrated by really strong enemies is to find a good middle ground, but for designers Corey Gaspur and Brenon Holmes, it was war. Brenon designed enemies, Corey designed guns. Corey “was obsessed with bigger, heavier guns. We had this sort of informal competition where he’d make this crazy overturned gun that would just murder all the enemies, and then I tuned some stuff up to compensate”
Brenon had to invent new ways to “stop Corey” and this led to the Phantoms. Corey had in turn designed consumable rockets that could wipe out entire waves of enemies. He must’ve figured this would make short work of Brenon’s space ninjas, but Brenon had other plans: “I had just added the ability for her to cut rockets [when Corey was playing MP and he was watching]. She cut the rocket in half... Corey just turns and looks at me and is like: ‘Really dude? I just shot a rocket at this Phantom and she’s fine? Not even damaged? Zero damage?’”
This friendly rivalry helped elevate ME3′s gameplay. Corey had a knack for making a gun feel so good to fire it had his fellow designers scrambling to keep up. It was his version of balancing. Before Corey sadly passed away he mentored Boldwin Li in all things weapon design and the arms race continued
Corey designed the Arc Pistol. It was causing problems for enemies because it was too powerful. It seemed hell bent on staying that way, Boldwin would tune down all its stats and it was still doing 3x the damage it should have been doing. “I was like ‘What the hell?’, and then I looked closer. It secretly fired 3 bullets for every pull of the trigger! Corey, you sneaky jerk”
The day it launched there were midnight launch parties across North America including one near the BW building. Numerous devs sat at long tables greeting fans and signing autographs as the fans picked up preorders. When midnight struck the line was long enough that it took several hours for some fans to get their game. One particular fan is remembered: “It was 3am. Some guy drove up from Calgary with his friends. He was like one of the last people in line. I think he was sort of tired-drunk. He threw himself across the tables, pulled up his shirt and shouted ‘Guys, sign my abs!’ And like I did, because he waited so long. It felt impolite not to. So I hope he enjoyed his copy of ME3″
For designing Protheans concept artists had free reign to design something that read as ancient
Before the concept art team had the story of the game to work toward, they explored wild ideas of their own including an image of the crew stealing back the Normandy to go after the Reapers
Jen Cheverie was testing scenes and was initially excited to be testing Mordin scenes, til she saw she was testing the Renegade version of his death. “This is even before like all of the audio and everything was in, so you didn’t even have the sad music. I remember sitting at my desk and my hands just went to my face when I saw that the gun Shep pulls on Mordin is the gun he gives Shep in ME2. I burst into tears and was crying for the rest of the day. People are waving to me as they walk by and I’m like, ‘It’s ok, I’m just killing my best friend’”
There’s a segment called “Shepard’s story ends”. Casey on the ending: “There’s a whole bunch of things that come together to make it incredibly tense and emotional for players. I think the biggest one was the sense of finality, that whatever it was that happened in that very last moment... was it.”
Wrapping up the story was a massive feat. In a way all of ME3 is an ending. Its final moments were the players’ last with a char they’d been with all the way from Eden Prime
“And while the critical reception of the game was extremely positive, many fans were unsatisfied with the ending, which became one of the most controversial in the history of games.” CH: “We were, on one hand, at the end of a marathon trying to finish the game and the series. But as devs we also knew that there would be more. We knew that we would continue to tell the story. In retrospect, we didn’t fully appreciate the tremendous sense of finality that it would have for people”. He envisioned an ending that posed new questions, something in the tradition of high sci-fi that left players dreaming about what that particular galaxy’s future could hold. “Frankly, there’s a lot more that we could have and should have done to honor the work players put in, to give them a stronger sense of reward and closure”
AAA games are massive undertakings with a million moving parts. Somehow they come together but even the best-planned projects don’t turn out quite like devs hope. From start to end video game production is a series of compromises. It’s rare if not impossible for devs to ship a game they’re entirely happy with. “I think that people imagine that when you finish a game, it’s exactly the way you wanted it to be. But whether people end up loving or hating the final result, we work hard to finish it the best we can, knowing that there’s a lot we would have wanted to do better. I think that’s true of any creative work”
As the dust settled after the initial reaction to the ending and later its epilogue, meant to show the wide-reaching ripple effects of Shep’s final choice, “players emerged mostly asking for one thing”. CH: “Now, most of what we hear, after both ME3 and MEA, is ‘Hey, just go make more Mass Effect’. And that to me is the most important thing. Knowing that players want to return to the ME universe is what inspires us to press on and imagine what comes next”
Mass Effect: Andromeda
By creating a new ME in a new galaxy the team was challenged to put their own visual stamp on the game while keeping it true to the franchise
Being the first ME game on a new gen of consoles meant for more detail
“Massive transport ships called arks populated with salarians, turians, humans, asari and quarians” made the risky jump to the Cluster
MEA was the first time BW had truly codeveloped across 3 studios: Edmonton, Montreal and Austin. The bulk of the work especially early on was done in Montreal, which was composed of a handful of Edmonton expats and heaps of experienced devs who joined from elsewhere specifically to bring a new ME experience to life. Series vets in Edmonton then came on to contribute writing, cinematics, design and QA, along with leadership from creative director Mac Walters and the core Production team. Austin writers and level designers also joined the fray
“It took a new team to take ME beyond the Milky Way”
Mac: “A lot of people in Montreal joined BW as fans of the franchise, so they just had this passion, and it felt like it was more like the days of Jade Empire, where a smaller younger team gets to do something for the first time. Even though it wasn’t necessarily a new IP for me, it felt fresh and new because of that. The team was just super excited to be working on it”
Early plans had the player exploring hundreds of worlds, procedurally generated, allowing for a nearly infinite variety of experiences. But as development wore on, it became clear that the game narrative required more specific, hand-touched level design on each world to keep the story focused and the experience engaging. “The plan was to give players numerous uncharted worlds to explore. Designers worked hard to come up with procedural elements that would make such planets special. Eventually the team made the difficult decision to abandon procedural planets in favor of more memorable hand-touched alien worlds, each with a specific story to tell”
One challenge was defining what ME meant without Shep. Care was given to include many of the MET’s key species. “Ryder recruited turian, asari, krogan and salarian followers”. Like Shep Ryder represents humanity’s hope for a peaceful coexistence among aliens who had long operated without human contact
Beginning with MEA the team decided that with few exceptions vehicles in ME have 6 wheels. Early Nomad concepts were bulkier. Later ones focused on its ability to move over its ability to protect itself from hostile fire, underlining the themes of exploration
German concept designer and auto-motive futurist Daniel Simon was contracted to create the Nomad and Tempest. The Tempest’s final design took inspo from the Concorde
Concepts for angaran fighter ships have the following notes: “Two doors swing open, wings rotate down to function as landing struts, the landing struts split open. It has a spinning turbine engine
Despite being set a galaxy away and some 600 years after Mordin’s death, there was a time when he had a cameo. It wasn’t cut due to running out of time however, it was cut due to drug references. John Dombrow explains: “One day I had to write a small quest for Kadara. I thought it’d be amusing if these 2 guys living way out on the fringes in a shack were growing plants for uh, medicinal purposes, and needed Ryder’s help with it. It occurred to me, wouldn’t it be amusing if Ryder had the option of actually trying ‘the medicine’ to see what would happen? And I thought, what if it turned into some hallucination that somehow involved SAM - like maybe SAM would sing? But why? How could I motivate that? Then it hit me. Who else in the ME game sings unexpectedly? MORDIN. As a nod to him I wrote SAM singing Modern Major-General. It got even better when our cine designer John Ebenger wanted to take it even further. Bless him, he came in on a Saturday to do a special hallucination showing Mordin himself. It was great. Til the fateful day we were told MEA had already been submitted to the ratings board. That’s when you declare things like drug references in your game. Mordin fell under that category which meant it was a no-go. We were too late”
Ryder’s white AI armor contrasts Shep’s iconic dark armor (intentional design)
Concept art for Ryder involved experiments with cloth (cloaks, ponchos, capes - “Pull here to release cloak”) and asymmetrical design elements
For alien design, there’s a few exceptions but humanoid figures are the ME standard and this persisted into MEA
Kett and angara concepts explored striking lines and textures
