The angel was trying—really trying.

Castiel stood in the dusty street of Sunrise, Wyoming, squinting beneath the low brim of a worn-out hat Dean had insisted he wear. His trench coat had been swapped for a rough duster, one size too large, and he wore boots that made him walk like he had nails in his heels.

“Why am I still here?” he asked, genuinely puzzled as he followed you away from the main street. “I delivered you. My job was finished.”

“Because Dean said we need backup,” you shrugged, grinning. “And because I asked. Besides, I wanted to see if you could ride a horse.”

He frowned. “Dean told me cowboys are expected to ride with ease.”

“And do shootouts and spit into buckets, yeah,” you teased. “But you can start with the horse.”

You led him toward a quiet ranch on the edge of town—wind-worn fences, sun-drenched paddocks, and a few horses grazing in the golden light. Castiel eyed them warily.

“It’s larger than expected,” he said, squinting at one.

“It’s a horse, Cas.”

“I am aware of what a horse is,” he muttered, stiffly trying to mount. He missed the stirrup entirely and stumbled back into the fence with an undignified thunk.

You bit your lip. “Do you need help, cowboy?”

He straightened, adjusting his hat. “I do not require assistance. Merely… recalibration.”

After a few more clumsy tries, he managed to get on, but sat stiffly, shoulders tense, as the horse snorted beneath him like even it was unimpressed.

“You look—”

“Intimidating?” he offered.

“Like the horse has more experience than you.”

He dismounted with a sigh. “This is pointless.”

“Nah,” you murmured, walking closer, sliding a hand up the lapel of his coat. “It’s adorable.”

“I’m not certain that’s a compliment.”

“It is,” you said, stepping close enough for your breath to mingle. “You came all the way to 1861 for me.”

“That wasn’t the assignment.”

“I know. But you stayed.”

Before he could argue, you kissed him—soft and deliberate. He froze, then kissed you back, slow and uncertain, like he was learning the rhythm of it from you. His hand hovered at your waist, unsure.

You smiled against his lips, whispering as you pulled away, “There’s a saying in these parts…”

He blinked. “Another one?”

“Save a horse… ride a cowboy.”

Cas tilted his head, thinking hard. “I still don’t understand what that implies.”

You didn’t get the chance to explain. Someone cleared their throat.

Dean.

He leaned against the paddock gate, grinning like the cat who caught the angel.

“Well, well, Cas,” Dean said, arms crossed. “I send you out here to get Phoenix intel, and you’re out here gettin’… saddled.”

Castiel stepped back immediately. “Dean. This was a personal moment.”

Dean snorted. “Clearly. I leave you alone for five minutes and you’re makin’ out behind the stables like it’s prom night.”

You just smirked. “Not my fault Cas in a cowboy hat does things to me.”

Dean blinked. “You mean emotionally or like—never mind, don’t answer that.”

Cas looked between you both, confused. “Is this where I’m supposed to be embarrassed?”

“No, buddy,” Dean said, clapping him on the back. “This is where you say ‘Y/N deserves to be kissed in every timeline.’ Like a real cowboy.”

Castiel turned to you, sincere as ever. “Y/N… you deserve to be kissed in every timeline.”

Your cheeks burned.

Dean groaned. “Dammit, he actually made that sound good.”

Cas looked at you again, hat a little crooked, lips a little red, eyes endlessly serious. “Was I… impressive?”

You leaned up and brushed your lips to his cheek. “You were perfect, Cowboy.”

Dean was already walking off, muttering, “I’m never lettin’ you two go on a mission unsupervised again…”
