main 3! gaming headcanons!!
Tumblr media
i missed kennys birthday because of my college classes wtf happy belated bday to kenny
a little off topic for the post but ive been playing around with the idea of making a band smau (after hours by 777bambi is so good every update got me at the edge of my seat) and ive primarily been focusing on that as of late so my next few posts might just be headcanons
Stan, Kyle, and Kenny and gaming with their s/o!! cw: implied nsfw on kenny's part
Tumblr media
♡ STAN MARSH
Thinks it's great to game together, an easy way for you guys to bond and have fun!!
He kind of likes the more nostalgic games, like super mario bros for the wii (this made me look up the game to confirm it's age and it was made in 2009 wtf??)
Let's you be player 1 but the catch is that he gets to be luigi
Stan prefers playing games on the wii (and switch) and or the ps4/ps5. He's a console kind of guy.
Prefers playing video games at your house and he'll even bring the necessary consoles over if needed just because if his dad sees you two playing he's going to whine to Stan about joining in.
Aside from nostalgic games he's also an action game multiplayer fan, lot of games he has is stylized to be fit for multiple people, so think of games like "It Takes Two" or even the multiplayer parts of Pokemon SWSH / Pokemon SV.
If you're a more single player kind of person, he definitely doesn't mind watching you play while cuddling. Would probably fall asleep watching you play.
I could see him playing Stardew Valley co-op with you if you convince him, but doesn't enjoy the whole farming thing too much
He marries Abigail in retaliation for making him play it with you. (Marry Shane and he will IMMEDIATELY divorce Abigail and beg you to marry him)
He still definitely plays multiplayer pc games with his friends, but sees no real joy in playing it by himself (think like valorant or league)
HOWEVER, if you want to play those games with him? Total tryhard but the really bad kind of tryhard.
Considering he only plays these games with Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman and doesn't play it on his own time he kinda sucks lol.
Screams "YOU'RE BAD" into his mic when he actually downs someone. Screams "WHAT THE FUCK" if he gets downed that Sharon comes in running like "Stan are you okay?!"
He gets so frustrated when he dies that he starts literally pouting. Let him get the final kill if it's just you two against one.
Insta-locks on Sage just to heal you only in game
"Sage heal? Sage heal?" -your poor other teammates
You carry him in these games tbh.
Tumblr media
♡ KYLE BROFLOVSKI
Unlike Stan, Kyle loves games like valorant, league, etc. He gets to let out his rage easily by winning
When he loses everyone in South Park knows, he's so mad. However he rarely loses so South Park is safe.
Out of his friends he's for sure got the most amount of kills and wins.
Screams "LETS GOOOOO" when he wins LMFAO. Then gives you a victory kiss.
FPS games is Kyle's specialty. He's def an omen main or something.
If FPS isn't your thing or if you're not good at it Kyle gets it. If you're willing he'll show you how to play (and how to get good fast) however just don't play with him, if you're lagging behind (even if you're new) he's so annoyed, but never mad.
Is willing to play other games with you 100%. Also thinks it's great to game together, even if your guys' gaming genres don't match he's willing to play what you like.
Mario Kart is your guys' go to. You always win against him which leaves Kyle in shock so he often demands rematches.
Ike joins with you guys sometimes and you both initially let Ike win. Ike gets mad though because he wants you both to play equally with him, so when you play fairly he still wins because Ike is just that guy.
Kyle is more of a pc gamer than anything, but if console is up to bat he's an xbox guy. Still is a fps guy on console but it's all single player.
HATES fortnite lol. Doesn't get the hype over it at all, he thinks the mechanics are stupid and won't play it. Might if you beg him to but.. you so owe him.
Is more of the guy that prefers you to watch as he plays, however has no issue if you want to take over playing and he watches, he makes you guys snacks to have while you play.
Avid minecrafter tbh, played it mainly for Ike but then got addicted. So now he makes you play it with him too. He's definitely the "miner". Goes all out on making sure you both have the best armor and weapons. Has a shit ton of diamonds so he made you a diamond shovel for the hell of it even though it's a dumb thing to waste diamonds on. Made you a pink wool heart behind your house when you were gone.
Also an avid tile matcher (think candy crush), begs you constantly for lives. Please give him lives he gives the MEANEST puppy dog eyes.
Tumblr media
♡ KENNY MCCORMICK
AVID HORROR GAME ENJOYER LOL
Literally any type of horror game is his go to game. Also likes those RPG horror games (think like ib, the witch's house, misao)
Sets you up by saving right before a jumpscare and then has you come over to play it with him and then you get to experience the jumpscare.
Late night horror game playing with Kenny <3 where you two just play roblox horror games all night, sometimes he puts in the comedic horror ones just so you guys can laugh at how bad it is.
He borrowed Outlast from Cartman to play on your console and you still have nightmares.
"Don't worry baby, nothing can get you when I'm here!" "What if you're NOT here though :(" and then cue him as Mysterion for the next 3 weeks to protect you.
Demands to be princess peach or rosalina in any mario game you guys play. If only one of them is an option and you take that character he will refuse to talk to you until you give up the character
Is also another minecraft enjoyer but likes scaring you with Herobrine LOL and that one scary jukebox disc.
"(Y/N)...." "What Ken?" "Herobrine is outside our door rn" (Y/N) left the game
He also likes watching you play games. Lays down with his head in your lap watching you play.
Kenny prefers multiplayer games that aren't limited to just two players only multiplayer. Only because Karen can play the game with you two then.
If you do happen to playing a two player only multiplayer game and Karen wants to join he lets her take over for him.
Kenny also loves puzzle like games (think like escape room games or keep talking and no one explodes).
Really he just loves seeing your face get all frustrated when playing these kinds of games. He rarely gets frustrated with things like these because he manages to somehow always figure it out, but doesn't say anything just to watch you get annoyed.
If you start getting really frustrated at the game and he notices, he does one of three things; he takes the controller or your phone away and turns on a new game, he actually solves it to spare your sanity, or he saves the game and helps take your mind off of the game and onto something else.

Hey how about some cute welcome home headcanons of Wally and co. With a human s/o who found and brought them to their house and they see their s/o playing on video games (they have a ds lite, a 3ds, a ps3, a ps4, a Wii and a Switch and a newly brought gamer laptop with some games installed) and get curious about it and want to try too and their s/o teaches them?
YIPPEE!!! Game time!
Wally Darling and Co. with a Human Reader who plays Videogames:
TW: Brief Mention of Murder (in the context of videogame violence/mystery games)
🎮 They all would be so excited to try to play videogames. They have never seen anything like them before. Well, they have seen the very early videogames, but the ones you have are so much more... MORE!
🎮 So, they all begin asking you random questions about the games you play. Who is that guy? What's a Mario? Who's MegaMan? Then, the most important question of all: how do you play?
🎮 This begins the task of teaching all of these puppets how to play various videogames, all on different consoles. It can get difficult due to their hands being different from one another. Poppy has wings and feathers, Barnaby has large paws, and Howdy has so many hands he can't decide which ones he should use to hold the remote or DS.
🎮 However, once you teach everyone how to play whatever game it is, it gets pretty fun! Especially party games or competitive ones. Watching a group of puppets get overly invested in a game of Mario Kart, no matter which game in the series, is enjoyable to watch. To your surprise, Wally seems to be the most competitive out of the group, causing you to have to teach him the value in letting others win from time to time and how bragging can hurt people's feelings. He takes that lesson to heart, though, going on to be more calm while playing.
🎮 Frank usually sticks to his own games, enjoying puzzle games, like Tetris or Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (he claims that these two games are COMPLETELY different due to the plot in Dr. Robotnik's). He is really good at them, too! Sometimes the others will watch him play it in awe, mesmerized by the pretty colors and music.
🎮 The final big surprise to you is how much Eddie loves mystery games. He can play any game based off of Sherlock Holmes or any other mystery novel for hours. He might not get exactly what is going on, especially in games that involve violent crimes like murder, but he gets the basic concept of "find the bad guy" and using clues to do so.
🎮 Most of the others stick to multiplayer, casual party games or racing games. Poppy does love baking games, though, including flash games revolving around baking. You kind of expected this, however, due to her preexisting love for baking. Sally likes any game with flashy style and drama. Barnaby likes to play Fibbage from time to time, of course, keeping the jokes clean (mostly because none of the puppets entirely understand or are aware of adult topics and humor being... Well... From a children's show). Sally likes Hello Kitty games because of the adorable aesthetic, and Howdy likes games about... managing things? He keeps finding these oddly specific games about running stores and such. Like, a VERY specific genre of tycoon games.
🎮 Home, whose puppet you found seems to be the size of a small cardboard box, can't really play games, but it seems to like to watch you play games. It shows extra happiness when you play home care/restoration/design games like House Flipper. It also enjoys watching you play The Sims, too, which you have made a household just for the Welcome Home crew.
🎮 Sometimes, due to little accidents, things break. Since controllers are designed with human hands in mind, felt or feathery puppet hands can drop things by accident. Over time, it becomes a little rule that they should try to keep their hands as close to the floor or whatever surface is closest to their hands as possible. That way, if they drop the controller, it will have less of a chance of breaking.
🎮 They probably ask you numerous questions about subjects discussed in the games they play. They can range from "why does the dog in Nintendogs act so different from Barnaby?" to "what is murder?" Needless to say, depending on the topic, you get some very strange whiplash due to puppets asking about dark, disturbing topics. You try your best to explain, though, because you know if you don't, they'll try to figure it out on their own. Might as well be you so they don't get any misinformation or stumble upon something horrific.

What's new on PlayStation?
Tumblr media
There are a handful of exciting new additions exclusive to PlayStation:
Haptic Feedback: The PS5 version features a completely new haptics integration. It allows you to feel the details of each impact, scrape, skid, and the abilities themselves in a whole new way. Since the haptics are largely audio driven I had a ton of fun working on this and it’s easily one of my favorite aspects of playing on PS5.
Activity Features: Easily track campaign progress from the control center, jump into a mode directly from the home screen, and see in-game help on campaign levels if needed.
Controller Lighting: On both PS4 and PS5 the controller lights with the glow color of your car. This helps to see overheat status as well as identify controllers during split-screen.
Regarding performance, Distance targets 60 fps across all single player content. On PS4 the game utilizes 1080p, and on PS5 it runs at 4K resolution. The PS4 Pro and PS5 version have both been enhanced with higher graphics quality and smoother performance. While there are dips here and there on the PS4, overall I think it runs pretty well, and it's even better on PS5 despite running at 4K.
Differences between PC and consoles
For those of you who’ve been enjoying Distance on PC, you’ll find that the core gameplay experience and overall features are extremely similar on PlayStation. There are of course some differences so I’d like to discuss them here.
I’ve talked previously about the technical limitations regarding Steam Workshop and the level editor, so at this time those aren’t available in Distance: Console Edition. Instead, we decided to officially include our favorite community-created levels directly into the base game for everyone to play. For example, our recent Kinetic Update (v1.5) on PC included 15 incredible new levels from the community and these will also be available on PlayStation!
Regarding online multiplayer, I completely understand that for some it might come as a shock to see it not included on consoles. While we have collectively spent a ton of time working on online multiplayer for PlayStation consoles, a series of unfortunate technical hurdles have led to it not being feasible for release at this time. Split-screen multiplayer is included however and allows for couch multiplayer in Arcade modes. For those curious about the behind-the-scenes technical info, please see below for a more detailed breakdown explanation.
With all that in mind, Distance: Console Edition is at a reduced price of $19.99 / €19.99. While it is possible that future updates will enable more content and features, please purchase with the assumption that the base game will not massively change in the future.
Getting into the technical details
If you’ve been following Distance for a while you’re probably aware that the PlayStation version has had a fairly long and tumultuous development. It was our first time developing anything for a console, and it’s been an incredible learning experience throughout.
Many years ago around the v1.0 launch we had a version of Distance using Unity 5 working somewhat reasonably on PS4 with several multiplayer features functional (though certainly not finished). After launching v1.1 I spent a lot of time implementing all of the various technical certification requirements for online play on PS4. This included things like parental chat restrictions, online ID consistency, etc.
As I was preparing to send a new build to Sony, I came to realize that to pass certification Distance needed to update to a much newer PS4 SDK version required by Sony. Unfortunately, this version of Unity 5.5 we used to develop Distance for years was locked to a very old PS4 SDK version, and the only option was to port Distance (yet again) to a much newer version of Unity. To comply with Sony's requirements, we needed to upgrade Unity from version 5.5 to Unity 2020. This unfortunately wasn’t negotiable and, as you might imagine, it took months to repair the various graphics and physics issues that came along with it.
The biggest hurdle was that our multiplayer system was completely dependent on the old Unity 5.5 version. The newer versions of Unity had fully abandoned their old multiplayer integration, meaning I basically had to start from scratch. One possibility was to attempt to replicate the custom RakNet backend we had relied on, but Unity’s version made several changes under the hood and without source code access it was challenging to emulate it. The other possibility was to simply rewrite everything from scratch and utilize an entirely new multiplayer system.
In short, I attempted both routes. After spending quite some time attempting to essentially rewrite all of Jason’s multiplayer tech, I realized doing this on my own will take an incredibly long time to get fully functional and properly tested. Between this issue, complications due to COVID, and my own personal issues with recovering from burnout, this was honestly a really frustrating time and one of the big reasons I decided to take a break from Distance development. As I mentioned in my September 2023 blog post I decided to go on a short hiatus to work on Project 2, and of course I enjoyed working on Project 2 so much that my short break soon became much longer.
Upon returning to Distance last year with a fresh perspective I made the incredibly tough call to disable online multiplayer for now. I would then focus on wrapping up all of the other features and content we have and get it into players’ hands as soon as possible. Of course it still took significantly longer than I expected to wrap up that last 1%, but at long long last we’re finally here.
Looking ahead
I really can’t say enough how much I’ve appreciated everyone’s patience and support during these challenging times. I’ve truly been blown away by the enthusiastic response to the Kinetic Update, and I’m so excited to keep creating and sharing stuff with you all.
To all of our new PlayStation players, welcome to the Distance community! I can’t wait to see which players take the top times on the new leaderboards. Please note that the best way to connect with other players is on the Distance Discord server.
You also might have noticed that there is a new remix of Isolation in the PlayStation release trailer. I’ve been developing a lot of new music for Project 2 and intend to release some songs officially soon, so please be on the lookout for more information about that. I’ll also be posting here and on social media when updates are released for PC and PlayStation.
Thank you all again!

A Hat in Time Version Analysis Part 1
So, this was an idea that basically haunted me since I recalled that I never updated the version of A Hat in Time on my PS4 that I acquired around December 2018. Considering that it got never updated, it is the console version that came before Gears for Breakfast updated the base game to match the version that made it to the switch in 2019 (That I also own as it was before I got Steam to run on my then potato PC) If you were to download the game now, you'd just get that version instead of the old one I have.
I thought that I would be fun to compare the two versions and find out the differences. I'm sure that I'll likely miss details and some chapters like Mafia Town for example. The layout of some maps and the size doesn't make it easy to spot differences, especially if you try to play the same game simultaneously by switching between the versions a lot. Nevertheless, I tried my best to spot a few key differences and am proud to show off the first installment of this series.
Miscellaneous things and Hat Kid's Spaceship
Of course we're going to kick it off with the title...which is the same in both versions, so nothing to report there. However the very next screen or lack there off in the PS4 version caught my eye
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see here, the early console version didn't have a proper file select screen yet, so all you'll see are the plain files with no Hat Kid just idling about.
The cut scene that happens where Hat Kid falls out of bed and you gain control is much the same, so nothing there, but something will catch your eye as soon as you open the pause menu
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The menu UI is much more simple sporting black outlines instead of the more vibrant purple used in the current version. The hat menu is the same black.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the menu out of the way, I went to explore the the spaceship a bit and found that most things are the same, expect for the multiplayer control panel thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mafia Town Act 1
The scene with the Mafia Goon breaking the glass and Hat Kid's subsequent fall to the planet is the same an so is most of the intro to the game. I followed Mu and her route was the same as in the PC version, her dialogue too. The only change that I found was that when you obtain the the hourglass that completes this level, the icon doesn't spin, it was very hard to get a good picture of that. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm going to end it here due to the limit of pictures I can put in a tumblr post. The next installment has a couple of oddities I found for Chapter 2-4 of Mafia Town.
If there's something in particular, you'd like me to try out in the versions, please leave a comment. I'm slowly making my way throught the whole base game, so I'll appreciate it, if the questions for this would be about Mafia Town as I won't get to Subcon or Dead Bird all that quickly.

PALEO PINES FAQs
Tumblr media
What consoles are you on
We are available on Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.
How can I support the development of Paleo Pines?
We are so excited you want to get more involved! The best way you can support us is to follow us on social media @PaleoPines or grab the game on any of the platforms available!
Will the game have co-op/multiplayer?
Paleo Pines is a single-player experience! We’re definitely keeping them in the back of our minds, but it won’t be part of this release.
Will the game be in real-time? Will I lose my dinosaurs if I don’t play for a while?
In Paleo Pines, dinos will only run away if you neglect them during active gameplay, so please be nice to your dino friends!
Is there any promotional content?
Not yet, but we hope there will be!
Will the game have mod support?
Currently it is not in our plans to include mod support for the game.
Will Paleo Pines be available in other languages?
Paleo Pines will be available in English, German, French, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese.
Is this game identical on all platforms, including the Switch version having an in-game achievement system?
Currently platform-specific features/meta features are only supported on a per-platform basis. Specifically, there is* not* an in-game achievement system for Switch.
Are there any bonuses for having save data from a different video game?
There are no bonuses for other game saves at present.
How will taming work?
A collection of cheeky dinosaurs roam the wild areas waiting to become your friends, as well as ranch helpers. Get their attention by mimicking their calls with your flute, then seal the deal with a tasty treat and trustworthy nose boop! Then gain their trust by creating cozy pens and learning what keeps them happy. Dinos might leave your island if they’re not happy - don’t worry though, you can always find them again and regain their trust!
Will Paleo Pines be free?
Paleo Pines is a premium game experience. We haven’t announced a price yet but will as soon as we can!
Will Paleo Pines have dating elements or relationships with the NPCs?
We are not currently planning on adding dating elements to the game. However, you can complete questlines for the NPCs and affect a positive change in their lives!
Will Paleo Pines also be available on Mac?
In the current plans, Paleo Pines will not be available on Mac.
Are there plans for early access?
There will not be early access, but we have a free demo on Steam!
Will there be seasonal changes in the game?
There are three seasons in the game which can affect the weather, available crops, and dino migration patterns. Triassea is a time of new crops and new life, where pleasantly cloudy days are broken up by occasional light and pleasant rainfall. Jurrasos is a hotter, more tropical time of year. It is rarely cloudy, and never stormy, perfect for beach picnics! Cretumnus is the blustery time of year, normally cloudy with rain showing up a bit more frequently.
What do you think the appropriate age to be able to play Paleo Pines will be?
We want to have the game accessible to as many people who want to play it as possible. We will try to keep the controls simple and intuitive to make sure everyone has a playing experience that is fun whilst still giving you lots of options and things to do in the game.
Tumblr media
Will we have to build up the ranch from scratch?
You start with a simple ranch and a little bit of land, and as the game progresses you can turn the neglected land into a beautiful and friendly home.
What will be customizable in game?
Paleo Pines is a place where you can express your individuality and creativity; no two ranches are the same! You can use decor to build a romantic garden, give your ranch a cozy woodland vibe, or go full-on-farmer with rows and rows of tilled soil. You can decide where to grow produce, or which spaces to dedicate to your dinos, including how big and what shape you want their pens to be. Your dinos can move around freely, so feel free to make communal areas too! Furthermore, you can customize your character as you like with a variety of features, curate a colorful collection of clothing and change your style using the wardrobe!
Will dinosaurs be adjusted if their depictions are drastically updated?
We love the latest science as it unfolds. Natalia, our paleontology adviser, is a key part in keeping us in the loop. If something exciting is revealed, we'll try to incorporate it if possible!
Can dinos at the ranch get sick?
The dinos cannot get sick, but if you forget to feed and take care of them, they might decide to leave your ranch.
Are dino genders fixed or randomised?
Most dinos do not have genders, except what you choose to imagine. However, some of the NPCs have their own trusty steeds who at times are referred to by their gendered pronouns.
Will the dinos come in different colors/patterns?
Yes! Each dino will have a pool of colours, and some dinos will have multiple patterns. These different colors/patterns will be spawned procedurally or under certain conditions!
Can my dinosaurs die? What happens if I forget to feed them?
Dinos will never die or kill each other. If you do neglect your dino, it will simply leave your ranch.
Why was Lucky chosen as the main dino?
We wish we had a better answer other than it's always been Lucky and we've never for a second considered another dino as she has always just felt perfectly right. She is an embodiment of what Paleo Pines is all about - friendship and exploration. Even after years of developing the game, we still feel happy when we look at her and that's the emotion that we hope is shared by others when they play!
Do the dinosaurs have varying personalities or all pretty much the same depending on their species?
There are a few different personality types, and any species can have them. But the species themselves have got bags of personality in their animations!
Is there a limit to how many dinos the player can have on their ranch?
You can have as many dinos on your ranch that you are able to keep happy! But keeping a dino happy in the long term requires a dreamstone, and there are a finite number of dreamstones in the game.
Will there be a chance of random mutation?
Since there is no breeding in the game, dinos will not mutate. However, there are various combinations of dino patterns and colors, some that are more rare than others.
Can we name our dinos?
Yes! All dinos can be named and renamed, except Lucky.
How will the dinos sound? Realistic or more cute?
It’s going to be more cute than realistic or terrifying. For example, large dinos have big low honks and small dinos might have chirps or trills. We’re also designing for melody to be important in the game, which will tie in to the sound design of the dinos.
What is Pippin’s Gender?
Pippin is a non-binary character who uses they/them pronouns. It has always been our vision for Paleo Pines to have a diverse, inclusive community with characters that may reflect any player’s identity or orientation.
Tumblr media
Which game engine is the team using?
We are developing in the Unity game engine.
Will there be controller support?
Absolutely! Actually, this is how a lot of us are testing the game already.
What program do you use for 3D modelling?
We use Blender for our 3D work.
Is there anything permanently missable, even rewards for fulfilling specific conditions?
Nothing aside from cases where this is desirable. For example: Granny comes to your ranch the day after you receive your farming tools. If you haven't used the tools yet, she will give you a farming tutorial, and give you seeds. If you have already used them, she comments on how you seem to know what you're doing, and gives you seeds. Either way you get seeds. But you can only see one of the two possible dialogues - the other is missable.

Spooky Season Game Recs 🎃
Since it is That Day, I put together a quick recommendation list for games that I thought might be appreciated for fun and for anyone who might want to use it.
Here is a generalized list of games you should play! I'm including some horror-themed, some that just have gratuitous violence, some just have creepy vibes, some that are mild but have Halloween themes, etc. A lot of these are very popular, and likely some of you will have already played/heard of them all, but this is just for anyone who hasn't. Feel free to add to this!
Quick note: unfortunately, I am in the small percentage of people who get severe migraines and nausea from playing first-person perspective games (but not third-person perspective ones). As such, there's a lot of horror games that I can't really play, and there's only one first person game I've played here. I'll include a section for some renowned games that I haven't played, but are well-received.
I’m giving one link, but for some of these it’s available on multiple platforms, I’m just linking steam if available since it’s what most people might have. I played most of these on PS4.
Also warnings for all of these. Some have heavy violence, a few have references to sexual assault, in one you murder a toddler. Etc. Be warned.
Happy Halloween 😊
Console/Professional/3D Games:
Until Dawn
This is one of my favorites, it is a choices-matter game with multiple endings, the endings being determined based on who lives and who dies. It's very suspenseful, they did a great job at crafting the right atmosphere for the game. Although in my opinion (and apparently the popular opinion) several characters were not very likeable. I did really like Josh, though. Best boy.
It's really neat in that your choices don't just effect the ending, but your choices can branch you off into a different path entirely, changing future events themselves, working more like a flowchart than a "Choice one gets ending A, choice two gets ending B" sort of thing.
It is a PS4 exclusive.

Inside
An eerie game with no dialogue and a really creepy atmosphere. I finished it in one Saturday. It's one of those games that's more of an "experience" than a game (kind of like Journey). This was one of those games where I kept seeing it for years and thinking like "huh, I should play that one day," then one day it was on sale on the PS Store so I finally did and I'm very very glad I did.

Friday the 13th
Basically you play in locations across the movie franchise. You can play as a victim and try to hide, or as Jason Voorhees and try to hunt down victims. There’s multiplayer and single player. It’s basically a hide and seek with someone trying to kill you.
(Link)
Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan/Little Hope
These are made by the same developers as Until Dawn. They're not sequels, as they have different stories and a new cast of characters (save for the overarching narrator-esque figure, think Igor from the Persona series).
Personally (and according to most reviews/professional critics), I think these fell a bit short of Until Dawn's legacy, but they're still pretty neat. They utilize the same mechanics, just with a new story. Also that intro rendition of O Death is a banger.
There’s also 2 more after these but I haven’t played them.
Unlike it’s predecessor, this one is available on multiple platforms. (Link)
Resident Evil Series
This is a horror game staple and I'm sure most people are familiar with it, but I'd like to note that it's extra appreciated for other people who have motion sickness/migraines, as several games are in third person (7 isn’t I think?)! There's a pretty expansive list to choose from, but (here is a comprehensive ranking list).
Silent Hill Series
Another staple for the horror genre and the origin of the iconic Pyramid Head, unfortunately if you don't have a gaming PC or a PS2 to dust off or pay for PS Now, right now it is unavailable -- however, that is set to change, as just recently a PS5 remake was announced, although unfortunately it looks like it might be PS5 only and not PS4. The first three games are generally regarded as the best, but I would not recommend Downpour, it feels very slow and kind of dull by comparison in my experience.
(Announcement)
Zero Escape Series
This is iffy to include here, but it has a lot of very dark themes and atmosphere so I think it fits. It's basically "escape rooms: the game," wherein you have to solve a lot of puzzles to progress. This series was an inspiration for Danganronpa, but the critical difference is that while DR has a brightly-colored punkish aesthetic and over-the-top quirky, eccentric, often lighthearted elements/characters to offset the dark depressing nature of a game about murder, Zero Escape doesn't have that, so it's a lot more bleak and heavy.
 (Steam page for ZTD)
The Wolf Among Us
A Telltale game with a really nice art style and memorable characters. It's a murder mystery and a "choices matter" type of game. I'm including it here because it's very gritty and violent at times, and kind of has like film noir vibes. Also if you like older men you'll probably like the main character.
Tumblr media
(Link)
Bendy and the Ink Machine
I have no doubt you're all probably already aware of this one, but I tolerated feeling like someone was hammering my head with a marble chisel for this game (I played it in 10-minute intervals and took breaks between but nonetheless) so I'm mentioning it so my suffering is not in vain.
The stylized nature of the graphics gives it a very quirky, unique vibe. It's somewhat exploration-ish with a plot. The main monster is also a really unique choice.
(Link)
RPG Maker Games
Unless otherwise noted, you can find these (here on VGPerson). The ones on VGPerson and most of the ones on this list in general are free.
Ib
A classic of the genre. You are a little girl at an art museum who falls into one of the paintings and enters another realm. You meet two friends (one is a "friend") who try to help you get back home (or not).
The Witch's House
Also a classic of the genre. You are a girl looking to reach the top of the witch's mansion for... reasons. There's a really well-executed plot twist. A cat is there. What more can you want.
Yume Nikki
The final entry here of the iconic genre-defining trio. There is no real plot, I don't think there's even any dialogue if I recall correctly. It's largely just a matter of exploring the world around you. It's very trippy and relies on aesthetic, it's not everyone's thing, but I found it pretty calming actually. If you collect all the effects, you reach an ending.
(Free on steam)
Pocket Mirror
This is one of those games where you play it and then are really surprised to learn it's not more popular than it is. I highly recommend it. It's somewhat Alice in Wonderland-esque, in the sense that you are a young girl traveling through an odd land trying to go home, and meet interesting (and sometimes dangerous) characters along the way. One of the biggest selling points for this is the music, which is (except for a few) original and not borrowed from free use websites. The art and game as a whole is GORGEOUS visually. Developer is Astral Shift.
Tumblr media
(Link)
End Roll
You are a 14-year-old boy who also happens to be a murderer. You are being put through a rehabilitation project that will cause you to have vivid dreams, which are very pleasant and welcoming... at first. The dreams are intended to eventually induce remorse in the subject, which, in this boy's case, means he has to relive some of the things he has done.
Corpse Party
Technically, the original was 1996, but pretty much any version you can get now is a remake with improved graphics. That being said, there are several different versions with different graphics.
Synopsis is a group of students become trapped in their school by supernatural means and have to find a way out. Gratuitous death and vengeful ghost hijinks ensues. This one is paid. You can purchase an old PSP copy as well. There's an anime based on the game that is significantly more graphic. There's also a lot of games after the original, but I've only played the original (or at least the remake of the original) so I can only speak for that.
I played (this version) a few years back, but to my knowledge (this version) is the most recent remake.
OFF
This is a personal favorite. You are a man on a mission to purify your (very bizarre) world, and defeat an evil queen. This is one of the best RPGMaker games in my opinion. The music is great, the characters are memorable, and the plot twist is very well-executed. It does a really good job of slowly becoming more and more unnerving to the point that by the time you reach the end, you know something isn't right regarding your understanding of things, but need to progress to find out exactly what. The way it utilizes unreliable narrator/limited perspective is very well-done. Also obligatory Zacharie my beloved.
Tumblr media
(Free official download)
Hello Charlotte
This is a series of several games about a girl named Charlotte. Some are paid and some are free. The art style is really neat, and it has that constantly mildly unnerving vibe that I really like. I believe the first one is free and the rest are paid.
Tumblr media
(Link)
Omori
Also really well-known already but I wanted to include it, this is more of a tear-jerker than a horror game, but there are some unsettling moments/imagery. The art style is really cute, and the characters are very lovable. It does a great job of setting up an atmosphere/story that leaves you just perfectly in the middle of your understanding, where you sort of know what's going on but makes you desperate to know more and fully understand what's happening.
(Link)
Pre-2000
Don't expect much from these in terms of graphics/mechanics, but they're fun nonetheless.
Monster Party
This is a 1989 game. It's Halloween themed (ish?) and really cute. Unless you have an NES on hand, you'll need an NES emulator and ROM to play it. Retroarch is a well-known emulator for all sorts of vintage games.
Tumblr media
(Retroarch)
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
This is a point-and-click from 1994. Personally I have to include this as it's one of my absolute favorite games/stories of all time. It is based on a renowned short story. Personally its selling point for me is that it has one of my favorite fictional antagonists of all time. The author of the original story voices AM in the game, too! I could ramble on about how much I love this work for literal hours but I'll spare you all that. I recommend reading the original story as well.
Synopsis: A supercomputer hellbent on satisfying his hatred for humanity has destroyed the world, leaving behind five humans who he spends eternity torturing. The five humans, each desperate to die and finally be rid of their tormentor, must go through stages designed to be personal hells for each of them to hope to achieve that.
Tumblr media
(Steam page)
Short Indie Games
These are basically short interactives meant to be unnerving and unsettling, which they do well. Time consumption ranges from anywhere from two minutes to maybe half an hour.  A lot of them are made by independent creators so it's good to support them! All of these can be found on itch.io’s  horror tag. In general, this whole page is full of good ones, so I’m just listing a few I found particularly neat.
Next Door
A short browser game based on a Junji Ito story.
(Link)
(Don't) Open Your Eyes
A short Renpy game. It has voice acting, which is like 99% of what makes it so unnerving. Basically, the title is the summary.
(Link)
Please Answer Carefully
I LOVED this one, it's stalker-themed. Basically a short survey from someone who misses you and wants you to forgive them :)
(Link)
Discover My Body + Water Womb World
Body horror based, point and click narrative. Both are made by the same person. The graphics style is really unique. I like this creator's portrayal of the characters, there's a common theme of a sort of religious fervor that blinds them to reason and drives them to insanity.
(Discover my Body)
(Water Womb World)
Assessment Examination
Very short, the images can be unnerving/uncanny if that bothers you.
(Link)
Honorable mentions:
First-person gamesI haven't played these; they're pretty well-renowned, though, and while unfortunately I am not able to enjoy them, you very well may, so they are worth checking out if you can!
Outlast
Layers of Fear
SOMA
Alien: Isolation
Amnesia: the Dark Descent
Blair Witch

I FUCKING LOVR THIS PORSHE
-
-
Hello hi , so I was reminiscencing about 2020. My whole life (most of my life) I only played call of duty. There was story RPGs here and there but I'd always go back to call of duty. And during 2018-2019 I was really starting to hate the State of COD. I played COD since I was little. Playing against bots b/c I couldn't get xbox online. I played the hell out of ghosts, bo4, Cold War, bo2 a bit, in total I'd probably have 4k hours racking up all together definitely more. And it's not like I didn't like story games or RPGs I think a lot of them outgrew replayability for me. The walking dead, life is strange, Bully. Most of these series I watched others play I never had money like that. But when I started working I played the hell out of these games and then I went back to multiplayers. Fortnite, was something I heavily played and Bo4. (These games I played heavily in high school 2016)
Then as time went on I stopped having ppl to play with and a lot of these games franchises I had loved , I started to despise. I never thought a company would hate their communities as much as they do now. I was strictly console player so I never had a chance to "broaden my horizons" with games and/or everyone was playing the same shit. So when I started to hate these games I took a chance on a game called "Cyberpunk 2077" I had saw clips of the game way back when, and I didn't really know shit about it except it was an open world rpg and u can hack shit.
So yeah I just wanted a change in scenery with my games I'd play. So yeah Cyberpunk released and it was broken. I was unfortunately experiencing it on ps4 anddd yeah the game barely functioned. The areas barely loaded in, yeah it was pretty bad. But I still wanted to see what the game had to offer. So as they made updates I was thrown into this new world that had me interested every step of the way. I don't usually say this but I'd genuinely want to play cyberpunk for the first time again.
Fast forward to 2020 I didn't realize other titles had released during 2020 cause all I was doing was playing cyberpunk. I had got a pc before or after it released but yeah. I was enjoying a shit ton of cyberpunk and learning Valorant. But for the most part cyberpunk was ALL I played for 4years. And idk I just can't believe CP2077 had such a hold on me. I think that's how games should be, I think CP2077 has written the best story I've seen in a very long time. And the different playstyles ppl can have was endless. During those 2 years of playing CP2077 there was countless updates and me STILL discovering new dialogues and choices thru out the game. Side quests and all.
I never thought I'd be a Virtual Photographer but CP2077 even sparked that for me and it's just made me so happy. I hope other games can take a page from CDPR's book to make these fresh and interesting. That may be easier said than done and "subjective" but I think cp2077 will be a top tier ip that everyone is going to love like gta and something like Skyrim. I hope I live long enough for the sequel and the world doesn't drop marshal law before I get to experience it 😎
I've felt this way for a long time but a lot of RPGs don't feel necessarily "fun" most stuff just feels like chores in the game. They slap a $70 price tag on these games just for the game to be broken, cliche story writing, and just bland and done before. A lot of RPGs follow a formula and I just hope these triple A companies break out of their comfort zones and actually create something new or engaging. Ppl deserve new stuff. I'm tired of seeing "10/10s" on games just cause it's "expected" to be good (but when I play it it's mid ashell)
This is my opinion please do not harass me over something like a damn video game this is just my thoughts. And I know this is wild but ppl have different opinions, and I'm not a god damn hive mind ass

Note
1, 9, and 17 for the ask game!
character(s) that first caught your eye/first favorite character?
When I first picked up the game, I really wanted to like Joshua! In all honesty, character vibes was a big factor in whether I engaged with media or not back then. And Joshua landed closest to what I typically looked for in a character (based solely on design vibes). Note I say closest, because back then my taste in characters was actually a little different than it is now.
What I got was...a surprise, to say the least.
I didn't like him immediately. I wanted to, but his, well...prickly nature was quite a bit different than what I was used to at the time. That said, as week 2 went on and I learned more of his story (fabricated or not), I was fascinated. By the time week 2 ended, this character I had wanted to like but wasn't sure if I would had so completely grown on me I was quite possibly obsessed. He single-handedly changed my taste in characters, design and personality. He's lived rent-free in my head ever since and quite possibly owns the place, since he seems to be the one making the rules on whether anyone else can stay, and for how long.
So yes, I admit I have trash taste in characters now, and it's very much his fault.
Over time, after many cycles of character analysis (and my own character arc that was...not all positive), I even came to find him quite a bit relatable...but this is redundant information, since that's literally question 17.
9. what platforms have you played twewy (and/or neo) on? if multiple, what’s your favorite?
For TWEWY, I've played it on the original DS, Solo on ipad, and Final on Switch. My fave, far and away, is the original - the game was really made for that system and it uses all the perks of the hardware with aplomb. I actually broke the A button on my DS lite playing TWEWY, haha. Being able to control both partners at once, with the old fusion star/cards system, not only feels great to play, it's also very nostalgic for me.
I do like Final for what it is though, if only because you can attempt to get the chaos of the original by playing solo multiplayer, and if not, the multiplayer in and of itself is fun if you have someone to play with. Being able to share the experience with someone else makes Final worthy imo.
NEO I played on Switch as well. I can't make comparisons because I haven't tried it on other platforms. I'm not much of a PC gamer and don't have a PS4.
17. what character(s) do you relate to the most?
TWEWY is full of relatable characters, so this list isn't going to be comprehensive. I think most of the playable cast is relatable in some way...but as this question says "the most," I'll try to narrow it down.
I think this would be more fun without context, so I'll say

Playstation Showcase 2023
Yesterday showcase was really cool!!! I have made a list of the games that I liked the most!!!
Metal Gear Solid Δ Snake Eater (MGS3 remake)
H Y P E D   A F
I was jumping with my sister with this one!!!! I can’t wait to play it!!! I hope they don’t mess it up because I love MGS3!!!!!!!! And when you realize the parrot is The End’s parrot AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Alan Wake 2
Same as Snake Eater SUPER HYPED!!!  and the fact there was a cameo of Max Payne has me even more hyped (confirming that Alan Wake, Max Payne and Control happen in the same universe aghflkahfla) Neva The artwork is beyond beautiful and the trailer made me cry :’(
Phantom Blade ø
Looked like a super amazing action game! And for once set in what seems chinese lore? sign me up!
Revenant Hill
Looks so cute, quirky and interesting!!!!!!!!
Sword of the Sea  THE ART IS SO PRETTY!!!!!!!!!!! As a recent fan of Journey I can’t wait to see this one too!!!
Foamstars
Looks like a really fun multiplayer game! Loved the character design so much!!! I know it is basically splatoon but nevertheless it looks really interesting!!
Dragon Dogma 2:
I liked how they basically said FU to final fantasy XVI’s lack of ethnic diversity, since DD2 will have more diverse characters I’m gonna get this one!
Final Fantasy XVI Don’t care about it, since the director said they won’t be adding  ethnically diverse characters because of realism in the quasi european setting (in a game where they ride giant yellow birds as horses btw) I lost all the hype. Street Fighter VI I played the PS4 demo and it seems Capcom is not going to repeat the mistakes of SF V and I’m all for it and the world tour mode is so much fun!!! Gran Blue Fantasy Relink: I have been waiting for this game to come since forever!!! Looks so amazing I can’t wait to play it!!! As a side note: Since most AAA studios are aiming for high fidelity graphics that look as close to real life as possible... Is it me or they are starting to feel a bit generic? in the sense that visually they start to look the same since these games go for the same thing visual realism, on the other the games that got most of my attention during the showcase were actually the ones with distinctive  art styles.  What were your favs??? :D

In Dark Souls 3 you could have 2-hour long invasions, and they weren't like that rare of an occurrence. You'd have to be really good at the game and there had to be certain conditions for that to happen, though.
First, in Dark Souls 3 you can have up to 6 people in a multiplayer session. 2 invaders, 3 phantoms and the host (4v2). In some areas like Irithyll, you could have 3 invaders 2 phantoms and the host. (3v3) In Elden Ring you can have only 4 players in one session.
Next, it would have to be a long, big area that is difficult to complete, with multiple choke-points and hard enemies. Those were the endgame and DLC areas, namely the Grand Archives, The Painted World of Ariandel and The Ringed City. The longest invasions usually happen in those areas.
Next, Dark Souls 3 combat functions very differently from Elden Ring. The amount of hits needed to kill someone in Dark Souls 3 is much higher. It depends on a specific build, weapon and your opponent's healthpool, but on average you would need 6-7 hits to kill a person with a greatsword.
There were weapon infusions that allowed you to regenerate both your FP and HP, which allowed you to fight for a really long time, and possibly indefinitely if you're really passive about it (get hit, retreat, regen for half a minute, come back in is a pretty efficient strategy).
Lastly, skill. You have to be at the top of your game to pull of an invasion like this. Master every tool in your arsenal, ascend your body and mind for maximum patience. You need a snack or two to pull off such a feat. Actually I remember standing there in game in my hiding spot, regenerating my HP while literally having dinner, and I firmly believe that was the reason I actually managed to pull off a W that evening.
Those invasions were fun, long, very difficult, skillfull and absolutely EXHAUSTING. Those were the kinds of invasions that change you as a person. You could get multiple hate messages during them, too.
Speaking of messages, I remember this one Japanese guy I invaded who SPAMMED STICKERS IN MY DMS and the loud and distracting sound of the notification is playing in my head as I'm writing this. AND IT'S ALMOST WORKED OUT FOR HIM. I had to quickly menu out of the game to block him, which takes like 20 seconds on a PS4, and when I turned the game back on, his phantom was already halfway through my healthbar. I managed to live and kill the host and his gank, but imagine that shit in Elden Ring? Nobody's gonna try to do that in a game where you can get killed in 1-3 hits!
I have so many more stories to tell... Dark Souls 3 is really the anecdote generator of Fromsoft games.

@behe4dings said: it's no fun if you cheat.
The grown adult man rolls his eyes. “I am not cheating!” Maxwell insists. He stomps both feet, childish and petulant. He sighs and cracks his neck, looking at Chad ruefully out of the corner of his eye. His full attention remains devoted to the screen.
They are next to each other on the couch testing out Maxwell’s new Switch. He’s more of a PS4 kind of guy, but exceptions can be made for nostalgic multiplayer games.
“How do you cheat in the world of Mario, even? Hm?”

This is the second Tales of Game I’ve finished (The other was Berseria 😬). Holy shit what a game, I never thought I would’ve fell in love with two games in the month of Jan so much.
For me the strongest connecting tissue of this game is 100% the characters. Yuri, Estelle, Raven, Judy, the supporting character to the villains make this games story so much better to the point I would just call it peak fiction. If I were to put the game’s story into words it would be “If a game took inspiration from old 2000s Fantasy Anime OVAs”, that’s the only way I can describe it. It’s not bad mind you, it can be predictable at times but the cast makes the story so enjoyable to the point you just want to see how these characters interact with each other. Usually from what I can tell, the cast if really good can glue a game together and Tales of games always (mostly) nail it.
Gameplay wise, so much fun. I don’t have the willpower to experiment to much with the combat but I had fun with it overall. Finding how certain attacks can land with each other is really cool. Just getting them in a stun locked position and bursting just to get them in a worst position and finishing it off with a Burst or a powerful finishing Arte feels AMAZING! Funnily enough most Tales of games are multiplayer with 4 player local co-op, the camera moves back to put everyone in the frame so they know where they are at all times. Only player 1 controls the character movement in the over-world.
For the presentation, I love how the character models look with the cell shaded like ((?) Im not to sure what to call it Ngl) look to them & with the environment looking pretty nice makes the game look really solid considering recent games going for a more realistic look which just makes the game age poorly.
Ima be real, just listen to the music especially the battle themes. That’s all I gotta say they are extraordinarily amazing to listen to.
I don’t have to much to fully say altho I would like to shout out side material: “Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike” & “Tales of Vesperia: The Empty Mask”. REALLY GOOD SIDE MATERIAL IF YOU WANT MORE OF IT (for The Empty Mask I highly suggest you get to part 3 of the game to read it). And for the ranking for each ToV media: “The First Strike” 7.5 or 8/10, “The Empty Mask” 8.5/10, and finally “Tales of Vesperia” 10/10.
If you want to play ToV I suggest getting it on either PC, PS4, Xbox, or Switch since they run normally unlike the ToS “remaster”. It has extra content on the PS3 version that didn’t come out to the west including some extra stuff. Highly recommend this game if you want to get into the Tales of Series.

Okay, to my fighting game fan followers, I'd like to present: River City Girls!
Tumblr media
The series is a spin-off of the Kunio-kun series, a beat 'em up game series that has apparently existed since the 80s and I had no idea about until recently.
The original game was released back in 2019 and stars Kyoko (the ginger) and Misako (the brunette) who are trying to rescue their boyfriends, series' protagonist Kunio and Riki (Misako is Kunio's girlfriend and Kyoko is Riki's)

The game is endlessly charming with amazing pixel-art-style graphics, a killer soundtrack and very cool boss fights! It also has a great sense of humour, you're gonna love it! You can even check out a bit of gameplay from Matt McMuscles, a favourite YouTuber of mine, through whom I got introduced to these game by a video he uploaded on the second game a few days ago on his other channel and made me look into these games. Apparently he's voicing a character in the second game and JackSepticEye is even voicing one in the first one!

Be warned though, the first game, the bosses in particular, can be challenging if you're playing alone. The game seems to have been made with 2-player co-op in mind so it's recommended that you get one of your friends to play with you, it's generally more fun this way. The first game however features no online multiplayer meaning that you actually have to depend on your real-life friends and mine are all STUPID and don't wanna play this with me so I'm stuck trying to beat the bosses on my own 😭😂

If you're feeling retro, the 1994 SNES game where Kyoko and Misako first appeared in has also been localized in the West for the first time ever this year as River City Girls Zero and serves as a prequel to the original and a second game, River City Girls Two, has just been released as well. All three games are available on Steam, PS4 / 5, Xbox One / X / S and Switch so I trust you'll have no problem getting them on the platform of your choice. The 2019 game which I got today seems to be on sale until the 22nd of December so you'll be saving up money and I think the sequel is also around 40€ and it just came out so even on full price the games aren't expensive.

According to Matt the second one, which he played solo, without his friend Liam who's playing with him on the video I shared above, is less challenging and it also features online multiplayer this time.
If you're a fighting game fan I think you're gonna have tons of fun with River City Girls because the games feature TONS of references and Easter Eggs to many popular fighting games and beat 'em ups. I've even seen pics of Sol Badguy and Jam Kuradoberi from Guilty Gear making cameos in the sequel, ArcSys is the publisher of both series.

Anyway, let me know if you actually end up playing any of the three games as I just started the first one myself and I'm really pumped!
