New diagnostic tool will help LIGO hunt gravitational waves
Machine learning tool developed by UCR researchers will help answer fundamental questions about the universe.
Finding patterns and reducing noise in large, complex datasets generated by the gravitational wave-detecting LIGO facility just got easier, thanks to the work of scientists at the University of California, Riverside. 
The UCR researchers presented a paper at a recent IEEE big-data workshop, demonstrating a new, unsupervised machine learning approach to find new patterns in the auxiliary channel data of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO. The technology is also potentially applicable to large scale particle accelerator experiments and large complex industrial systems.
LIGO is a facility that detects gravitational waves — transient disturbances in the fabric of spacetime itself, generated by the acceleration of massive bodies. It was the first to detect such waves from merging black holes, confirming a key part of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. LIGO has two widely-separated 4-km-long interferometers — in Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisiana — that work together to detect gravitational waves by employing high-power laser beams. The discoveries these detectors make offer a new way to observe the universe and address questions about the nature of black holes, cosmology, and the densest states of matter in the universe.
Each of the two LIGO detectors records thousands of data streams, or channels, which make up the output of environmental sensors located at the detector sites. 
“The machine learning approach we developed in close collaboration with LIGO commissioners and stakeholders identifies patterns in data entirely on its own,” said Jonathan Richardson, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy who leads the UCR LIGO group. “We find that it recovers the environmental ‘states’ known to the operators at the LIGO detector sites extremely well, with no human input at all. This opens the door to a powerful new experimental tool we can use to help localize noise couplings and directly guide future improvements to the detectors.”
Richardson explained that the LIGO detectors are extremely sensitive to any type of external disturbance. Ground motion and any type of vibrational motion — from the wind to ocean waves striking the coast of Greenland or the Pacific — can affect the sensitivity of the experiment and the data quality, resulting in “glitches” or periods of increased noise bursts, he said. 
“Monitoring the environmental conditions is continuously done at the sites,” he said. “LIGO has more than 100,000 auxiliary channels with seismometers and accelerometers sensing the environment where the interferometers are located. The tool we developed can identify different environmental states of interest, such as earthquakes, microseisms, and anthropogenic noise, across a number of carefully selected and curated sensing channels.”
Vagelis Papalexakis, an associate professor of computer science and engineering who holds the Ross Family Chair in Computer Science, presented the team’s paper, titled “Multivariate Time Series Clustering for Environmental State Characterization of Ground-Based Gravitational-Wave Detectors,” at the IEEE's 5th International Workshop on Big Data & AI Tools, Models, and Use Cases for Innovative Scientific Discovery that took place last month in Washington, D.C.
“The way our machine learning approach works is that we take a model tasked with identifying patterns in a dataset and we let the model find patterns on its own,” Papalexakis said. “The tool was able to identify the same patterns that very closely correspond to the physically meaningful environmental states that are already known to human operators and commissioners at the LIGO sites.”
Papalexakis added that the team had worked with the LIGO Scientific Collaboration to secure the release of a very large dataset that pertains to the analysis reported in the research paper. This data release allows the research community to not only validate the team’s results but also develop new algorithms that seek to identify patterns in the data.
“We have identified a fascinating link between external environmental noise and the presence of certain types of glitches that corrupt the quality of the data,” Papalexakis said. “This discovery has the potential to help eliminate or prevent the occurrence of such noise.”
The team organized and worked through all the LIGO channels for about a year. Richardson noted that the data release was a major undertaking. 
“Our team spearheaded this release on behalf of the whole LIGO Scientific Collaboration, which has about 3,200 members,” he said. “This is the first of these particular types of datasets and we think it’s going to have a large impact in the machine learning and the computer science community.”
Richardson explained that the tool the team developed can take information from signals from numerous heterogeneous sensors that are measuring different disturbances around the LIGO sites. The tool can distill the information into a single state, he said, that can then be used to search for time series associations of when noise problems occurred in the LIGO detectors and correlate them with the sites’ environmental states at those times.
“If you can identify the patterns, you can make physical changes to the detector — replace components, for example,” he said. “The hope is that our tool can shed light on physical noise coupling pathways that allow for actionable experimental changes to be made to the LIGO detectors. Our long-term goal is for this tool to be used to detect new associations and new forms of environmental states associated with unknown noise problems in the interferometers.”
Pooyan Goodarzi, a doctoral student working with Richardson and a coauthor on the paper, emphasized the importance of releasing the dataset publicly. 
“Typically, such data tend to be proprietary,” he said. “We managed, nonetheless, to release a large-scale dataset that we hope results in more interdisciplinary research in data science and machine learning.”
The team’s research was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation awarded through a special program, Advancing Discovery with AI-Powered Tools, focused on applying artificial intelligence/machine learning to address problems in the physical sciences.

Low Harmonic Drives: Driving Towards a Greener Future How Clean Power is Empowering the Automotive Industry
Over the past few decades, variable frequency drives (VFDs) have become widespread in industrial and commercial applications for their ability to control motor speed and torque. Traditionally, VFDs utilize pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques to vary motor voltage and frequency. However, PWM generates high harmonic currents that can damage motors, heat up transformers and power cables, and potentially cause voltage distortions on the utility grid. To address these challenges, a new generation of low harmonic drives has emerged based on advanced switching algorithms. What are Harmonics? In electrical systems, harmonics refer to sinusoidal voltages or currents having frequencies that are integer multiples of the fundamental power supply frequency, usually 50 or 60 Hz. Harmonics are produced by non-linear loads like adjustable speed drives that draw non-sinusoidal currents from the power source. The extra frequencies generated interact with the system impedance and generate losses, heating, vibrations, torque pulsations and can even cause misoperation of protective devices if sufficiently high in magnitude. Harmonics cause additional power losses in distribution transformers and overvoltages that reduce insulation lifetime. They can also interfere with communication lines. Traditional PWM Drives and their Harmonic Impact Traditional PWM VFDs employ insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) or thyristors to rapidly switch the motor voltages on and off, generating quasi-square wave voltages to control motor speed. However, when these non-sinusoidal voltages are applied to the motor windings, they produce harmonic currents in the supply lines that are integer multiples of the fundamental supply frequency. Specifically, PWM drive techniques generate dominant 5th and 7th order harmonics that can propagate back into the utility system if not properly filtered. The harmonic currents not only stress motor windings but also increase I2R losses in the supply feeders and distribution transformers. Low Harmonic Drives can cause overheating in older transformers not designed for harmonics. Harmonic distortions also increase circulating currents within delta-wye grounded transformers. To mitigate these issues, dedicated harmonic filters need to be installed, increasing overall system costs. Excessive harmonics if left unchecked can even cause protective relays to malfunction. Advancements in Low Harmonic Drive Technology To address harmonic pollution from VFDs, innovative drive manufacturers have developed new low harmonic drive technologies based on advanced switching algorithms that naturally minimize the generation of lower order harmonics. Pulse-Density Modulation
One such technique is pulse density modulation (PDM) where the IGBTs are switched at high frequencies using narrower pulses compared to traditional square waves. By spacing the pulses closer together over time, PDM produces quasi-sinusoidal drive output voltages that inherently contain lower harmonics. PDM drives generate less than 5% total harmonic distortion (THD) without additional filters. Active Front End Drives
Another option is active front end (AFE) drives with a front-end rectifier consisting of IGBTs or MOSFETs instead of diode bridges. The AFE rectifier actively shapes the supply current waveform to follow the voltage waveform and provide near unity power factor without harmonics. AFE drives come with integrated DC chokes to absorb any remaining higher order harmonics internally, keeping them well below 5% THD.

Stop Closing Your iPhone’s Background Apps
We All Perform This iPhone Maintenance Ritual, But It's a Mythical Waste of Time That's Been Around For Years.

Apple users seem unanimously convinced that closing background apps is a good habit, but it’s more likely a waste of time. For too long, I’ve watched friends and family orchestrate a frenzy of up-swipes from their iPhone’s multitasking screen to cleanse themselves of countless open background apps.
Perhaps this mythical ritual of iPhone maintenance will save battery, make your phone run faster, or stop social media companies from tracking you. While it’s not crazy to think so, it’s simply a lie we’ve all been living. Closing background apps does nothing because those apps aren’t actually “running.”
In 2016, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, confirmed that closing your background apps does nothing for your battery life, in response to a customer’s email shared with 9to5Mac. On a technical level, most of your background apps are essentially frozen, and your system just displays a screenshot of them for consistency. The impact on your battery life is negligible.
The same can be said for Android as well. In fact, closing your background apps actually uses more battery than just leaving them open. That’s because shutting down and initializing an app requires more energy than restoring it from its suspended state in your “background.”
Federighi also notes that closing background apps does nothing to improve your phone’s performance, for many of the same reasons it doesn’t affect your battery. iOS manages your iPhone’s RAM as efficiently as possible by default, and closing your background apps does not optimize anything.
In terms of privacy, force-closing apps do nothing to stop companies from tracking you, according to The Washington Post. Apps can still collect your data even if they’re closed. Contrary to popular belief, apps can still track you even if you force quit them.
The key misunderstanding here is that force quitting an app is different from turning “Background App Refresh” off. Turning off “Background App Refresh” in your settings is the most surefire way to address all these problems.
Origins of the Myth
This myth seems to have originated on community forums in the days after the first iPhone’s release. On July 5th, 2007, just a week after the iPhone’s release, one user posted about their Safari application running in the background in Apple’s community forum.
“When you click the home button after you have been using Safari, is it still running in the background and draining the battery?” said the user.
“I am pretty sure EVERYTHING is running in the background,” replied another user.
There were many other community forum posts about this same confusion at the time, including one very popular post on Stack Overflow. However, it’s clear this misconception has occurred for many users since the beginning.
Why It’s Pervasive
This myth, like others, is pervasive because it feels like it should be true. On a computer, having too many tabs or applications open can make it run slower. That much is true, but an iPhone’s operating system is fundamentally different. Apps on your iPhone are meant to permanently stay open, able to be called up in an instant at any time. This distinction was never made clear by Apple.
Apple has never claimed that closing background apps improves your phone’s performance. The company has always quietly maintained you should only force quit an application if it’s frozen.
But still, millions of people are wasting their days, and their batteries, closing their background apps. It’s one of the most pervasive myths in technology, but we need to stop performing this iPhone cleansing ritual once and for all.

Court refuses to stop arrest, prosecution of suspended Adamawa REC, Yunusa-Ari

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday, dismissed a suit filed by Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Adamawa, seeking protection against arrest, detention or prosecution by the police and others. Justice James Omotosho, in a judgement, dismissed the suit for lacking in merit. Justice Omotosho held that though Yunusa-Ari, in his fundamental rights enforcement suit, made an elaborate show by trying to shield himself from being arrested, detained or prosecuted by security agencies, there was no ground where such immunity could have been granted by the court. The judge agreed with the respondents that the suspended REC derailed his allegations when he claimed that the respondents subjected him to a media trial. He observed that Yunusa-Ari also claimed that his fundamental right was breached by the respondents for posting negative information against him on social media, while insisting that he was not giving fair hearing. But Justice Omotosho held that the issue of fair hearing had nothing to do with publications of news worthy matters by the media practitioners in order not to fail in their responsibility of dissemination of information to the society. He said “news reported by the media is not a court of law and that the media, as the fourth estate of the realm, must be free to report at all times.” Besides, he said the applicant had not shown that he was dragged to any court or tribunal but only claimed that the respondents engaged in media trial against him. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspended REC had, in a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/563/2023, sued the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police, and the Nigeria Police Force as 1st and 2nd respondents. Also joined in the suit filed by his lawyer, Jibrin Okutepa, SAN, include the Attorney-General of Federation and Minister of Justice, Director of Department of State Services (DSS) and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as 3rd to 5th respondents respectively. Yunusa-Ari, who sought eight reliefs, prayed an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the respondents from arresting, detaining or causing his arrest or detention, harassment or intimidation for carrying out his lawful duties as the INEC REC in Adamawa during the supplementary governorship election held in the state on April 15, 2023. He also sought an order directing the respondents to publish an apology in two national dailies “for the unlawful and unconstitutional media trials and negative press interviews, press statements/release, social media posts, publications etc against” him for carrying out his lawful duties as INEC REC. Giving six grounds, he said he was the REC during Feb. 25, 2023 and March 18, 2023, general elections, including the supplementary poll on April 15, 2023. He also sought an order directing the respondents to publish an apology in two national dailies “for the unlawful and unconstitutional media trials and negative press interviews, press statements/release, social media posts, publications etc against” him for carrying out his lawful duties as INEC REC. Giving six grounds, he said he was the REC during Feb. 25, 2023 and March 18, 2023, general elections, including the supplementary poll on April 15, 2023. He said after the general elections, he issued an interim report which raised a lot of criminal issues against security agencies and some INEC staff. He said the respondents only considered part of his report, leading to the conduct of a supplementary governorship and state house of assembly elections on April 15, 2023 in the state. He averred that upon the conclusion of the supplementary poll, he wrote his report and to his total shock and dismay, instead of investigating the persons named in his report and the issues raised in the said report, the respondents had continuously embarked on media trials against him. Yunusa-Ari alleged that the respondents and their agents, without any valid judgment and conviction by a competent court, had made several press and social media pronouncements against him that he was guilty of a criminal offence in the performances of his lawful duties as INEC REC. He described the acts as “a gross violation of his constitutional right to fair hearing.” But delivering the judgment, Justice Omotosho held that the only issue to determine in the case was whether the fundamental rights of Yunusa-Ari were breached by any of the respondents. The judge said though the fundamental rights are sacrosanct to every human being, the rights are not absolute. He held that the suspended REC filed the suit quoting Section 35 of Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution to prevent himself from being prosecuted for the role he played in the 2023 Adamawa governorship election. “This court will not shied any person against investigation or prosecution if a prima facie case is established against such person,” the judge said. By • Olalekan Fagbade Businessman sues NDLEA over unlawful invasion, intimidation The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and four others have been dragged before a Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, over alleged intimidation and molestation of a 75-year-old businessman, Taiwo Kayode Alli, and the invasion of his home in the state. Mr Alli and his son, Hamid Alli, have reportedly filed a fundamental rights suit against the NDLEA chairman. Through their lawyer, Eyitayo Abiodun, the applicants are praying to the court for an order restraining the Defendants, either by themselves or acting through their agent, servant or privy, from arresting, intimidating or molesting the applicants, pending the determination of the application. Listed as Respondents in the suit are, the Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA; Head, NDLEA Lagos Zonal Command, Lagos State, Adetula Oluwarotimi Lawal (NDLEA Bariga Outpost), and NDLEA Personnel, Adekunle Edward. The applicant made the prayers in a Fundamental Rights Enforcement suit marked FHC/L/CS/2017/23 before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa. Specifically, the applicants are praying for an Interim Order restraining the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Respondents either by themselves or acting through their agent, servant or privy from arresting, intimidating or molesting them pending the determination of the application. In a 16-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Kayode Alli (1st Applicant), he stated that on June 6, 2023, his son (2nd applicant) drove his friend who came back from the United States of America to the airport to catch her flight, and on getting home at about 5.30 am, he realized that the gate of his father’s house were he resides had been thrown open after the lock was broken. He also discovered that his brother’s car, which was parked in the compound, had disappeared, and he immediately reported the matter at the Anthony Police Station. He stated that the Nigerian Police after, tracking the car an hour before the incident, discovered that it was parked outside the NDLEA Outpost office in Gbagada, Lagos. According to him, the 2nd Applicant with the Police officer went to the NDLEA Gbagada Outpost Office, where they were told that the car was flagged down in Ikeja and the occupant refused to park, fled and abandoned the car whereas the car was parked in the house. He stated that the NDLEA personnel also informed the Police that, a substance suspected to be an illicit drug was found inside the car, and that was the basis of towing the car. He stated that a few hours after his son left for work that same morning he was informed that officers from the NDLEA Gbagada outpost had come back again to pack all the belongings in the house and also broke into the apartment upstairs which belonged to his brother who leaves abroad. He added that as a follow-up, NDLEA officials visited the 1st applicant’s place of work and residence of over 30 years and demanded for code to the safe in the office and that he called his son who released the code to them without hesitation. He added that after opening the safe all the contents were removed including his son’s international passport, identity card, land documents and other documents belonging to his other children. The deponent added that when his lawyer visited the NDLEA office he was allegedly told that all the documents would be returned upon payment of N5.5 million which was allegedly paid under duress. Consequently, the Applicants are seeking amongst other reliefs, a declaration that the incessant invitation, threat of arrest, interrogation, harassment, intimidation and planned detention of the applicant, on the subject matter by the 1st to 4th Respondents to forcefully make the applicants admit that the product found in my house which are things being used for butchery business and cool room compressor are illicit substance, is not only oppressive, illegal and a flagrant breach of the Applicant’s Constitutionally guaranteed rights.
The Applicants are also praying to the court for an award of N50 million as damages against the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Respondents for the alleged unlawful and needless breach of their right to private life, liberty, and dignity. Justice Allagoa has fixed the hearing of the Application till December 4, 2023.
