Blatantly Partisan Party Review IX (federal 2025): Family First

Running where: for the Senate in NSW, QLD, SA, and VIC, and for a solid collection of House divisions in the same four states plus Fenner in the ACT

Prior reviews: federal 2013, VIC 2014, federal 2016, VIC 2022, NSW 2023

What I said before: “This theocratic authoritarianism is not simply an inappropriate basis to govern a large and diverse community; it is riven with hate and should be repudiated loudly and thoroughly.” (VIC 2022)

What I think this year: Family First are, unfortunately, back on federal ballots after a period of deregistration. The original iteration of Family First collapsed in 2017 after Bob Day, their Senator for SA, got section-44’d out of parliament under a bankruptcy cloud and his replacement, Lucy Gichuhi, defected to the Liberals rather than participate in a merger with Cory Bernardi’s Australian Conservatives. That party soon went defunct and two ex-Labor state MPs, Jack Snelling and Tom Kenyon, got the party’s database and resurrected Family First. You won’t be surprised to learn that they are social conservatives (i.e. bigots) from Australia’s worst union, the Shoppies, although it’s still striking to see a party typically associated with Protestantism revived by two Catholics. Kenyon today is the party chairperson, while the leader is Lyle Shelton, a Protestant famous for eating shit.

Bob Day is quite unhappy about the party returning without him. He registered the Australian Family Party at state level in SA and ran on its behalf at the last federal election as an independent (see my review here). He opposed this registration of Family First unsuccessfully, and he’s apparently gone even more batshit crazy than he used to be because he’s now running for the Trumpet of Patriots—and only as their second candidate on the SA ticket. Mate, you’re a former Senator, have some self-respect and demand top billing. Anyway, let’s move on from Day to what his erstwhile party is offering this year.

To a considerable extent, Family First is a vehicle for Shelton and his grievances, in much the same way as the Australian Christian Lobby under his leadership in the 2010s was defined by how steaming mad he got about same-sex couples. The menu across the top of the website even invites you to buy Lyle’s book (I’d rather set the $30 on fire thanks). If you check the issues tab, the first specific issue listed is drag queen storytime, a thing young kids really enjoy that only the most deranged dullards think causes “confusion and distress”. If the biggest thing you’re worried about is that people dressed elaborately are at libraries to promote literacy and a love of reading to children, you’re actively looking for things to make you mad—and, indeed, seemingly struggling so hard to find things genuinely maddening that you’ve settled on something that ought to be uncontroversial.

If you are exposed to too much Seppo social media and are familiar with the main themes pursued by far-right religious crackpots in the US culture wars, you won’t be surprised by the rest of Family First’s platform. Lyle slurps from the septic tank and it shows. You don’t need me to tell you that Family First opposes women’s reproductive rights or that they want to exempt private Christian schools from discrimination laws. They really hate trans people, and their policies would cause untold harm particularly for trans children: one of their big issues is a “close the gender clinics campaign”. I think we should instead evict Lyle from his house and open one there.

The most galling part of Family First's rhetoric about trans children is not the offensive depiction of them as “confused” or of puberty blockers as “medical experimentation”, but claiming that many who do transition are suicidal, with the implication this is a consequence of their transition. The reality is that refusing to allow people to transition, forcing them to live an identity other than their own, and discriminating against those who do transition are major causes of suicidality among trans youth. So much makes me mad reading Shelton’s work but this has got me especially worked up.

Go and eat more shit, Lyle.

Recommendation: In the House, give Family First candidates a very low preference; in the Senate, give Family First a weak or no preference.

Townsend Family: Eric (33), Valentina (30), Aria (9), Ansel (8), Abbott & Asher (3), Abigail & Adele (2) T

Harvestfest was a success! We hosted all 39 family members at a hall that we rented and it was a wonderful time, we had loads of food & drinks, and even played some games. As is tradition, we also updated our family photos, and even though we couldn't take pictures outside due to the weather, they still came out great! We also celebrated the autumn birthdays, so me, Conner, and Jarrett had a birthday cake each.

Paulson Family: Ryan (57), Claire (53), Conner & Jarrett (17)

My parents are down to just 2 kids at home, who would've thought that this day would come! Now that they've graduated high school, both Conner and Jarrett will be attending Bible college, they're both doing foundational Bible degrees then Conner plans to focus more on Biblical leadership and Jarrett will use his time getting the foundational degree to discover his options. Now that she's not homeschooling, my mum spends more time in music ministry and visiting her grandbabies. So far there aren't any grandkids that live in or around Newcrest, so when she and my dad travel for her various performances/teaching bookings, they factor in trips to see us kids who are sprinkled all over the country. As Zach's wedding is coming up, she's also helping Kelsey and her family with wedding planning. Everyone will be back here in a few weeks for Kelsey and Zach's wedding, we're definitely blessed to be able to spend this much time with each other!

Paulson Family: Carter (33), Madelynn (30), Lester Jr (8), Fitzwilliam (3), and Alana (2)

Carter and Madelynn still live in Willowcreek, with Carter steadily getting promoted at the WPD and Madelynn homeschooling the kids. They live near and go to church with our cousins Adalynn and Tanner (along with their families) so they have a great family support system in their area like us.

Paulson Family: Alan (28), Tessa (23), Charity (4), Edgar (3), Jonathan (2), David & Abel (6 months)

Alan and Tessa definitely have their hands full! Earlier this year they welcomed twins David & Abel to the family, where they joined their 3 older siblings. We always joke that out of us all, these two are the ones that will surpass our parents and have more than 10 kids! So far they haven't announced that they're expecting again as we're used to, but you never know, the Lord may choose to bless them and they might have something to announce at the wedding! They continue to live in San Myshuno where Alan continues his work as a critic, but recently have also joined in the conversations about moving elsewhere. As their family expands they'd like somewhere away with more space, so as a family we've also been praying for the Lord to guide them in the best direction.

Robbins Family: Reid (26) and Celeste (28)

Celeste and her husband Reid are excitedly waiting for their twins to join the family! In recent weeks Celeste has had issues with her blood pressure, and especially after the tragic and unpreventable loss of Parker & Lana's twins, she's been taking every precaution; It was a plus that they didn't need to travel far for Harvestfest this year. She's been taking it easy at home and doing exercises as prescribed by her doctor. She's due early in the new year, the wedding will be her last travel plan before they hunker down and get ready for the babies to arrive.

Crocker Family: Gregory (29), Kristyn (26), Kayla (3) and Wyatt (1)

Kristyn and her husband Gregory are loving life with their little family in Oasis Springs. Gregory continues to work as a lawyer, and has just joined a christian law firm that specialises in advocating for churches and those who face oppression for their christian beliefs. Kristyn stays at home raising their two cute kids and participating in ministry with their local church.

Crawford Family: Tucker (27), Sabrina (26), Campbell (2), and Sullivan (6 months)

Sabrina and Tucker have been enjoying life with their newest addition to the family, little Sullivan. They're now at home full-time as Tucker works on the family farm, he handles operations along with other farm workers while the his family travels on tour with their music ministry. When they do local shows they perform together, they've even invited me to perform with them sometimes which is very fun and something I enjoy doing.

Paulson Family: Jarrod (22), Madison (20), Myles (2), Michael & Makenna (3 months)

Jarrod and Madison also added to their family this year! What a difference this years family picture is from last year when they were announcing their pregnancy. Little Michael and Makenna are so cute, with little Makenna being the only girl born during the baby boy boom!

Future Paulson Family: Zachary (21) and Kelsey Parness (20)

These two just can't wait to be married! The wedding is planned for the first few weeks of winter, so only a few weeks left! The ceremony and reception will take place at our home church, so Sabrina and I been blessed to be able to help with the planning for the wedding. Kelsey is such a sweet girl and we can't wait to have her officially join the family. After marriage they'll live in Newcrest, which is a first for my parents as so far all of us have moved away after getting married for one reason or another.

I’m going to Vegas for lunar new year and I leave early in the morning on Thursday. Which means my bag has to be packed before I go to bed on Wednesday but, I’m going to play trivia Wednesday night, it starts at 7 so I’m probably getting there at 530. Which means I’m getting picked up at 515, therefore I have to get in the shower by 3 at the latest, so I have to finish my housework and eat lunch by 1. All of that would be fine except the suitcase I was going to use is too small so I have to wait for my mother to drop off the big one. Not to mention, I still haven’t shaved so, now because I missed my normal shower window I’m going to have to motivate myself.

This may have been a bad idea but I was never actually allowed to watch the Ken Ham vs Bill Nye debate, despite every adult I knew as a child ranting at every chance about how Ham “absolutely destroyed” Nye and how it’s such a good example of apologetic science blah blah blah

So I’ve decided to watch it now at the age of 21 as a deconstructing ex Christian evangelical fundamentalist to see how much of what he says is the exact same word for word bullshit I was taught growing up

I’m not even all the way through Ham’s beginning presentation and I’m already fed up. He keeps calling naturalist science a “religion” (which it blatantly is not by any definition) and saying that teaching children to approach science outside the lens of religion is somehow indoctrination and teaching them not to think critically.

Also, y’all probably can figure this out on your own but the issue with creationism is that when you *start* from the Bible and try to make the facts fit it, of course that’s what is going to happen. It’s called confirmation bias. When you go into a situation already assuming that you know what happened, you are going to see every bit of evidence as somehow in support of your theory even when it isn’t.

The difference with non-religious science is that they go in already assuming that we don’t know what happened, and they build the theory from the bottom up, not the top down. They take the evidence and learn from it, not force it into puzzle piece spots where it doesn’t fit.

hehehehhhooo,, here's something i've been working on for 'bout a month,, albeit not consecutively– took a few,, very very long breaks in between working on this,, but i managed to finish it in the end! am i satisfied with it? .......ehhhh? not completely, but if this took any longer, it might not have seen the light of day, so like. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

anyway,, made a little poster for my favorite fic, tommyinnit's services for villains, vigilantes, and various other vagabonds, by @scorpionoesit!!! it's really really good,,, and i've always wanted to make more art for it,, so i decided– poster! at least,, that's what it's mean to resemble,,, dkdmkdmdkd.

i will freely admit,, i'm... not the biggest fan of the fan-made logo i tried to design for it,, feels a bit boring, and could definitely have used a bit more pizazz, something to make feel more like the fic itself(what does that mean? you figure that out),,,, but– again, steam was running low,, dkdnksjs. graphic design is my passion. i do also have other complaints, but i'm afraid i already punched my one-use self-critique card,, oh well,,, dkdnkxjdkd.

Penny: Mom, Dad, before I move out, I feel like I should tell you that Damien isn’t going to join the Irisites, and we’re not following Mother Iris.

Johnathan: What?! You told us– 

Penny: We’re going to attend this church. If I have children, they’re going to go to public school, and I’m going to have a career. 

Laila: Penny, how could you–

Penny: I don’t believe the Watcher wants women to be subservient. I don’t believe It wants us to be like Mother Iris. Maybe It did when the Book was written, but the world has changed, and we need to change with it. 

Johnathan: This is ridiculous! We raised you, and this is how you repay us? By betraying everything we ever tried to teach you? 

Penny: I’m doing what I have to do to be happy. I still believe in the Watcher, I just won’t worship like you do. Whether or not you can accept that, accept me, is up to you. 

Johnathan: Laila, get the boys. We’re leaving.

Damien: I know you didn’t want a fancy honeymoon, so I just got us a room at this bed and breakfast, and tomorrow morning we can start moving into the house. I think Dahlia attacked some of the furniture with black paint, but we can always– woah, are you ok?

Damien: Come here.

Penny: I don’t even know what to do with myself. 

Damien: Well, tonight we’re going to go to bed. Tomorrow we’ll eat breakfast, and I’ll start moving us into the house.
