Week 9: Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming
The gaming industry has changed significantly in the last several years. The emergence of gaming culture, gaming communities and live streaming has transformed what was formerly a solitary hobby into a lively, social experience. The blog post for this week examines these occurrences and how they affect the gaming industry.
The gaming culture
The traditions, values, and practices that gamers around the world share are collectively referred to as gaming culture. “Gaming culture has evolved beyond entertainment and has become a medium through which values are conveyed and internalized by the younger generation” (Yoon 2024). It covers everything from the slang and phrases used in games to the customs of tournaments and game nights. The inclusiveness and diversity of gaming culture unite individuals from many origins and promote a feeling of community and identity.

Gaming continues to influence social interactions as technology advances, fostering innovation, teamwork, and a strong feeling of community identification. Through cooperative multiplayer gaming, competitive esports, or leisure gaming sessions, users create strong bonds that cut across national and cultural borders.

The rise of gaming communities
Communities for gamers have grown to be an essential component of the gaming experience. These communities, which are frequently built around certain games or genres, give players a place to interact, exchange stories, and work together. Pitroso (2024) stated that a variety of sociological perspectives, including subcultures, neo-tribes, and scenes, can be used to comprehend gaming communities. These communities focus on building social links and a sense of belonging rather than simply playing games. Several platforms, including social media groups, online gaming forums, and multiplayer experiences that let players interact, team up, and compete with other gamers worldwide, serve as examples of the strength of these communities. Players form close bonds with fellow players who have experienced similar challenging conditions as they work together to complete tasks like raids and battles. (Molyneux et al. 2015)

The impact of Live Streaming
The way we engage with and consume gaming content has been completely transformed by live streaming. Gamers may now broadcast their gameplay in real time to a worldwide audience thanks to platforms like Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming. In addition to opening up new avenues for content producers, this has helped viewers feel more connected to one another.
The game experience is made more participative by the elements that live streaming systems offer. “Viewers are attracted to game live streaming for various reasons, such as interaction with streamers” (Lee et al. 2025). Through live chat, gamers may engage with their audience, creating a sense of community and offering a direct line of communication with them. Through this real-time communication, players may quickly receive feedback, respond to requests, and build relationships with their audience. Additionally, video producers can make money through sponsorships, donations, memberships, and ad revenue through live streaming services.
Additionally, gaming has become a communal activity thanks to live broadcasting. In order to foster a sense of community and rivalry, viewers can simultaneously watch live tournaments, esports events, and gaming marathons. Because of the social component of live streaming, viewers actively engage with one another and create virtual communities based on shared interests, creating specialised fan bases for particular games or streams.

Case study: The rise of PUBG and its live streaming success
When PUBG was released in 2017, it completely changed online multiplayer gaming by bringing in massive survival gameplay in which players fight to be the last person standing. Due to its strategic, intense, and unpredictable elements, it was the perfect game for live streaming, drawing millions of viewers on sites like YouTube Gaming and Twitch. According to Craig Chapple (2021), during the global COVID-19 outbreak, PUBG Mobile's sales skyrocketed. In March 2020, when the initial wave of lockdowns was at its worst, player spending reached a record $300 million.

Live broadcasters who demonstrated excellent gameplay, thrilling moments, and community-driven challenges were a major factor in PUBG's rise. The game gained widespread recognition thanks to streamers like Grimmz and Dr. Disrespect, who attracted large audiences and shaped gameplay patterns. Because of its competitive nature and high replayability, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) maintained player and viewer engagement and developed a robust global community.

Due to the game's popularity, esports tournaments like the PUBG Global Championship have grown in popularity and attracted participants as well as observers from all over the world. These competitions were made available to a worldwide audience thanks in large part to live broadcasting, which strengthened PUBG's dominance in the gaming market. The path of PUBG demonstrates how gaming communities and live broadcasting can expand a game's audience, maintain player engagement, and turn a game into a cultural phenomenon.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the gaming scene has changed as a result of the development of gaming communities, gaming culture, and live broadcasting. Because of these advancements, gaming is now a more inclusive, social, and interactive pastime. It will be fascinating to observe how these themes develop and influence gaming in the future as technology advances.

So I've begun streaming games on twitch and don't have a mic, so first stream today was just my headphones picking up on the mic audio. Wanna know if anyone has any suggestions for good microphones that are cost friendly but still good quality. I don't want one with any sort of RGB stuff on it, I don't need the fancy lights I just need one that works and possibly has a sound suppressor screen thingy. Idk where else to really ask about this so tumblr it is lol
My budget for a good one I'd say is maybe under $45 USD, at least for a starter one
