Paul Nash based this art from sketches and photographs he received from the Metal and Produce Recovery Unit in Cowley, Oxford of England. Here German and British aircraft from both world wars were brought to recycled by Morris Motors. They'd take the pieces of these planes and use them to repair or even construct new aircraft.

Nash wrote that the sea of wreckage could be perceived to move and twist, but it was of course dead, and the only movement was the flight of a white owl, depicted near the horizon at the right. Paul Nash real quote was lengthier and far more beautifully melancholic. I suggest looking it up to search it out. He wanted specifically the painting to be anti-propaganda and be used as post cards in Germany, hence the German title.

Some believe the paintings sad tone was influenced by Nash's own heartbreak and health issues. He struggled with respiratory illnesses which some years later would be his end.

You can see this painting now in the Tate Gallery, in which there is multiple, across the United Kingdom.
