Capsule and Mid-Size Reviews

Spider-Man: Shadow of the Goblin by DeMatteis and Michael Sta. Maria (includes Peter Parker: Spider-Man #-1 by Mackie and Dan Fraga) The retro mini-series Marvel's been publishing for close to a decade now occupy an interesting space. They're naturally continuity heavy, and yet their very existence sort of defies continuity, as it can be so hard to fit more events into an ever-sliding, ever-more packed time-scale. Case in point, Shadow the Goblin is a sequel to an issue from the “Flashback” month Marvel had back in 1997, where in lieu of regular issues, Marvel published #-1 for nearly all of their titles, showing events from prior to Fantastic Four #1. There are five Spider-Man #-1s, and several of them are quite good. Peter Parker: Spider-Man #-1 is not one of them.

The issue is mainly about further establishing Gwen Stacey's Uncle Arthur, recently introduced in the present day 1997 Spider-Man comics, and giving him a past as a former head of security for Norman Osborn. Rereading it 27 years later, the very 90s level of conspiracy theory assigned to Arthur Stacey as his main personality trait seems almost quaint in our modern, Q-Anon addled world. Mackie introduced a “Proto-Goblin” (only called that on the cover), an Osborn employee named Nels van Adder who turned into a red, rampaging monster after being exposed to an incomplete version of the Goblin Formula more than a decade before the Red Hulk debuted. Van Adder escaped at the end of the issue, and the plot's been left dangling until now.

DeMatteis sets his tale in Spider-Man's very earliest days, a month after Ben Parker's death. It does, in fact, seem to painstakingly keep the events of Kirk Busiek and Paul Lee's Amazing Fantasy #15-18, a mini-series from 1996, in continuity. DeMatteis goes right up to the edge of breaking continuity within the story itself though, which he has Peter Parker comment on his his narration, as he clarifies at one point that Peter Parker didn't meet Harry Osborn until college, but Spider-Man encountered him sooner, as Spider-Man saves Harry from van Adder at one point. He also swings by Norman Osborn's hospital room, only to find van Adder already there and attacking Norman. Norman was going to have to be part of this story, but DeMatteis does a decent enough job of keeping Spider-Man away from the key players without it seeming completely contrived, thus preserving their cannon first meetings from Lee and Ditko's Amazing Spider-Man.

As is typical of a DeMatteis Spider-Man story, the emphasis is actually on the psychological or spiritual lives of the characters. In Peter Parker's case, DeMatteis focuses on the guilt he still feels over Uncle Ben's death, the rift that's grown between him and Aunt May, and how uncomfortable he is with some of his new powers. In the case of Gwen and George Stacey, it's dealing with the slow death of her Helen Stacey from pancreatic cancer; her best friend Harry being repeatedly attacked by a giant monster does not help. Van Adder longs to be reunited with his wife and children, and is promised a way back by a figure long thought dead-- Emily Lyman-Osborn, Norman's first wife and Harry's mother.* Emily and Harry provide a vehicle for DeMatteis to discuss Norman's abuse, both physical and emotional. She had faked her death to get away from Norman, but that act causes Harry to reject her, in the end.

DeMatteis is one of, if not my single favorite Spider-Man writers. His run on Spectacular Spider-Man in the early 90s with Sal Buscema is my favorite run on the character, but every time he's written the character, it's been a joy. Shadow of the Goblin is not his best work on the character, but it is quite enjoyable and delivers the psychological focus one expects from the pairing of creator and character.

*Apparently Dan Slott resurrected Emily about eight years ago, so this change was not original to DeMatteis, and why Norman conveniently erases Harry's memory of meeting his mom.

New Ultimate Spider-Man vol 2 by Hickman, Checcheto, and Messina

Let me get it out of the way-- Gayle Watson's husband is named Timothy Byrnes, not “Douglas.” Does it really matter? Well, only in sense that as I said in my review of the first volume, Earth 6160 is set up as diverging from 616 only when the Maker intervened. Why have Gayle Watson in a different failing marriage? Why not just have him be named Timothy?

Sigh. It might even be one thing if the nature of this world being set-up by the Maker wasn't utterly central to this book, but it is. The focus of the book is on Spider-Man and the Green Goblin fighting the forces of the Kingpin, who is himself an underboss of the Maker. If this was just about an adult Spider-Man, married with kids in an alternate world, these things might not matter so much, but the narrative itself constantly calls attention to the uber-plot of the 6160 universe.

Overall, I think this volume was stronger than the first one, particularly the issue focusing on Ben Parker and Jameson investigating a lead that brings them to Harry Osborn, not the Kingpin as expected. It loses some points though for having 6160 Felicia Hardy on costume encountering Spider-Man on the cover, which not only never happens, she appears in literally one panel.

Daredevil: the Red Fist Saga v 1-3 by Zdarksy, Checcetto and De Latorre

I think I waited too long to read this the conclusion to Zdarksy and Checcetto's remarkable run since the last volume shipped. I greatly enjoyed the series to this point, how Zdarksy explored Matt Murdock's faith, how he reacted to breaking his own rules, the evolution of Kingpin, and a thousand other things. This ending though... Foggy having been killed some time ago, Stick always having been a Hand spy, and so many other twists climaxing with Murdock killing himself and going to (a) Hell to fight the Beast of the Hand (and his more powerful sister). Daredevil is Marvel U book. He's fought the son of Mephisto. He's fought killer robots. He's fought doppelgangers created by the evil self of the perfect artificial man. Heck, the Hand bring people back from the dead. Somehow though, this all just felt like too much to me, even within the context of the Marvel Universe. It reminded me of nothing so much as the ending to the otherwise sublime Scooby Doo: Mystery Inc. ending with the Scooby Gang finding out their really our ghosts and monsters. Anyway, this is probably more a flaw with me than the actual comics.

World's Finest vol 5 by Waid, Moore, Pugh, and co.

The most often retold comics stories are often origins or first appearances. One of the first comics I ever read was Detective Comics #627, a giant size spectacular celebrating the 601st appearance (yes, it was an issue late) of Batman in the pages of 'Tec by reprinting his very appearance in “The Case of the Chemical Syndicate” and retellings of the story from 1969, alongside two modern retellings of the story by the then-current writers of Batman and Detective. It makes for a terrific anniversary issues. One of the most commonly retold non-hero origin stories though is likely the first meeting of Superman and Batman. The two had been sharing space in World's Finest for some time before teaming up, and even then, readers did not learn how they became friends until #76's “The Mightiest Team in the World” by Edmund Hamilton and Curt Swan. In an era where Superman and Batman were not friends, John Byrne spun a completely original yarn in Man of Steel #3, where the two both hunted a thief named Magpie. In 2006, Joe Kelly and a host of artists paid homage to WF #76 by retelling it with added Deathstroke and a mysterious figure that certainly wasn't Deadpool. Those are just scratching the surface of versions of this story.

WF vol 5 opens with Mark Waid providing his take, as the pair of heroes meet when Kryponian mad-scientist Jax-Ur works through the Riddler to make his way out of the Phantom Zone. Waid pays a nice homage to Byrne by having the literal first meeting occur with the two working together to capture Magpie, before collaborating on the bigger threat. As with most of Waid's WF, it's an enjoyable story, striking a remarkable balance between both classic, Bronze storytelling and something more modern. In a lot of ways, Waid's pulled off a remarkable magic trick with this series.

Next up in the volume is the series's first annual, which contains three stories focusing on characters who've been spotlighted throughout the current WF family-- Metamorpho (Dennis Culver and Travis Mercer), Bumblebee (Stephanie Williams and Rosi Kampe), and the Challengers of the Unknown (Christopher Cantwell and Jorge Fornes). The first two stories reveal how special what Waid's accomplished with the series is, as they try to replicate that retro/modern style to different results. Cantwell and Fornes do not bother with that, and go for something more formally daring, as the Challengers attempt a rescue involving a malfunction device that affects the flow of time. Fornes capably depicts the chaos through repeated images and broken panels, but the story overall breaks no new ground. Still, it points to Cantwell's status as a writer on the rise.

Next, Waid returns with Steve Pugh in tow to provide a counterpoint to the first story in the volume-- a new take on the first time Luthor and the Joker teamed up. As far as I'm a ware, this is a wholly original tale, and it's excellent. Luthor breaks the Joker out of Arkham to help him make sense of something based on the Voynich Manuscript that supposedly leads to great magical powers. In fact, it leads to the Rock of Eternity via a subway tunnel. In the upshot of the tale, Luthor saves the world from a magically powered Joker, but in doing so costs himself access to the Rock. As with the opening tale, this provides a superb example of what Waid's accomplished in the series.

Finally, book closes with Waid and regular artist Dan Mora (adopting a very different style) setting the stage for their next multi-parter... which involves someone killing fifth dimensional imps. I'll keep an open mind, but this seems almost opposite what makes this book work.

My Favorite Art Books of 2019

This year I reviewed 62 art books, a dip again from the 74 I did last year, and 82 back in 2017. I attribute the reasons for the falling numbers to a combination of reduced readership for my blog ( less readers = less conversion, which unfortunately gives me less resources to procure books ) as well as the comparatively smaller number of interesting Japanese art books that I felt was worth picking up.

Despite the reduced quantity, there’s still plenty of great art books that were published in 2019, and these particular 10 are my favorites. I hope you’ll find something of interest in the list, and here’s to a happy 2020 ! –

1) Spider-Man : Into The Spiderverse – The Art Of The Movie

Published in late December 2018, this book narrowly missed my fav art books list of 2018, so I’m including it here for posterity.

Winner of the 2018 Academy Award for Best Animated Film, and a movie I’m super proud to have worked on, this book explores the stunning concept art created for the film, with a surplus of sketches, storyboards, character/environment designs as well as color scripts. The beautiful images that you see in the film were greatly informed by the amazing visuals the concept artists created, so if you like the movie, you’ll the art work in this book too.

2) Tokyo At Night – The Artworks of Mateusz Urbanowicz II

Tokyo based Polish illustrator Mateusz Urbanowicz‘s first art book Tokyo Storefronts was one of my favorites in 2018, and he’s back again this year strong with Tokyo At Night, a collection of delightful watercolor illustrations that explores the the moody nocturnal sights of the sprawling, skyscraper topped metropolis saturated with neon lights, mysterious back alleys, wet cityscapes lit by reflections and more. It’s a stunning art book from start to end, and I love it.

3) Real Size – Katsuya Terada Art Book

Renowned Japanese illustrator Katsuya Terada’s Real Size is a superb collection of his black marker art works, many of which were created during his live drawing events. The title refers to the print size of the reproductions which are at 100% scale of the original art works, large mural pieces which are cropped and presented across several pages in the book. The complete drawings are also included, scaled down to 16% of the original size.

4) Making Solo: A Star Wars Story

Industrial Light & Magic Presents : Making Solo: A Star Wars Story is a handsomely photographed making of book by Rob Bredow, the SVP, executive creative director, and head of Industrial Light & Magic.

As a child, the production photographs of the AT-ATs from The Empire Strikes Back inspired Rob to become a filmmaker, and in meticulously documenting the progress of the production on Solo he hopes to do the same – to inspire the next generation of artists, engineers and storytellers.

The beautiful set photographs gives readers an intimate glimpse into the journey that Solo took from pre-production, production, and post-production, fully documenting how this film came to the big screen.

This book is a great companion for the equally fantastic Art Of Solo – A Star Wars Story, which focuses on the concept art behind the film ( and incidentally one of my fav art books of 2018 ).

5) The Idol – Sushio

Sushio is a Japanese animator/illustrator who started his career as an animator at studio Gainax for the TV animation series Neon Genesis Evangelion. After working on many renowned anime series and movies such as One Piece, he took on the character design work for the anime hit series Kill La Kill, catapulting his status in the animation world.

This book is his long-awaited first commercial collection that looks back over his career to date. It features notable works from Kill La Kill, Gurren Lagann, Momoiro Clover Z, along with a panel illustration of Anime Matsuri 2015, his work overseas for an annual anime convention held in Texas, and much more. This book also features Sushio’s illustrations of AKIRA: two original illustrations depicting the imaginary post-AKIRA world, which was officially approved by Katsuhiro Otomo himself, and two illustrations taken from the Tribute to Otomo art book.

6) The Making Of Alien

The Making Of Alien is an in-depth and comprehensive book charting the complete story of how Alien was made, featuring new interviews with Ridley Scott and other production crew, and including many rarely-seen photos and illustrations from the Fox archives.

I already own several excellent books on the making of the Alien films, Alien The Archive and Aliens – The Set Photography just to name a few, but this huge hard cover volume explores plenty of material that I’m only seen for the first time, most notably the huge collection of “Ridleygrams”; detail storyboards draw by the director himself, as well as on set production photographs and a giant depository of concept art pieces by several artists like Eliot Scott, Chris Foss and Ron Cobb.

But the book isn’t simply your regular coffee-table book glossed over with just pictures and images. The small print text accompanying the visuals are cramped with detailed production stories and are more scholarly than just a casual read.

As a big fan of the franchise I’m absolutely delighted with this book, and I really look forward to the upcoming Making Of Aliens book, also by J.W. Rinzler.

7) Children Of The Sea Background Art Book

Children Of The Sea ( Kaiju No Kodomo ) is a Japanese animated film directed by Watanabe Ayumu and produced by Studio 4°C, based on the highly acclaimed manga by Daisuke Igarashi. The art direction and background art is supervised by Kimura Shinji, who previously bought us the amazing background art in Tekkon Kinkreet and Steamboy.

Published in the same format at the fantastic Shiro ( White ) background art book for Tekkon Kinkreet, this hardcover volume is bursting at the seams with stunning background art painted by Kimura Shinji, with some 250 pages of art work.

8) Hellboy – 25 Years Of Covers

I enjoy every page and panel of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics, but the art covers he has illustrated for the comic are something special; often drawn with just that extra, delicate detail. Over the years as the volumes of Hellboy and the shared universe BPRD grew it became harder and harder to keep track of all the covers that he has illustrated, and I started hoping for an art book that is dedicated to just the covers. Hellboy – 25 Years Of Covers is exactly that.

This hardcover volume features more than 150 full-page cover pieces from Mike Mignola, Richard Corben, Duncan Fegredo and more, all neatly collected for easy viewing and enjoyment.

9) Ikegami Ryoichi Art Works

An art book that is long overdue, Ikegami Ryoichi Art Works is a superb collection of illustrations from the famed manga artist of Crying Freeman, Sanctuary and Mai The Psychic Girl.

Running at a sumptuous 288 pages, the art book is split into 2 separate volumes, with one book dedicated to male characters, and the other female. While a good portion of both volumes feature illustrations from Crying Freeman, likely the artist’s most famous work; there’s still a good spread of content from Ikegami’s other mangas, and this is the biggest collection of his art work published yet.

10) Akira Art Of Wall Art Book

This book arrived just in time to be included in this year’s list, and also made for a very splendid Christmas present.

Four sets of giant Akira murals ( see the pictures I took here, here and here ) used to decorate the construction walls of the Parco Shibuya shopping mall in Tokyo from the period of 2017-2019 are fully reproduced in this stunning boxset. The panoramic art work looks spectacular when fully extended, and would immediately class up any wall lucky enough to be adorned with it. I think this might very well be my favorite art book of the year, among all my favorites.

The nominations for the 2018 Joe Shuster Awards have been announced this week. Commonly nickednamed “The Shusters”, they are Canada’s national comic book awards that honours and raises the awareness of Canadians that create, self-publish and sell comic books, digital comics and graphic novels.

Quick Bits:

A Walk Through Hell #5 concludes the first arc, showing us what happened to the other agent in the warehouse, and giving a bit of closure to what happened in Carnahan investigation. This is some of the darkest, creepiest stuff I’ve seen from Garth Ennis and he’s got plenty of good horror out there. Perfectly brought to life by Goran Sudžuka and Ive Svorcina.

Asgardians of the Galaxy #2 is more entertaining cosmic fare, reminding me a bit of some of the bizarre cosmic quests Marvel used to publish back in the 80s and 90s. Particularly some old Silver Surfer and Warlock & The Infinity Watch. It’s hard to qualify that feeling, but it’s welcome in the story. The artwork from Matteo Lolli and Federico Blee continues to be top notch.

Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams #1 is weird, but what else would you expect from The Maxx? Beautiful art here from Sam Kieth, with a softer, almost watercolour like colour style from Ronda Pattison.

Battlestar Galactica (Classic) #0 is a free preview of the next volume of the series from John Jackson Miller, Daniel HDR, Natalia Marques, and Taylor Esposito. I’ve like quite a bit of Miller’s Star Wars work, and despite not particularly caring for the original BSG, this isn’t bad. The artwork from HDR and Marques is very nice, both in terms of the likenesses and in the level of detail that the pair are putting into the ships and starfields.

Blackbird #1 is off to a good start, giving us a mix of magic and kind of a more grounded coming of age story. The artwork is a huge draw, with Jen Bartel, Paul Reinwand, and Nayoung Wilson delivering something that feels a bit like Kris Anka’s work in Runaways and Jamie McKelvie and Matthew Wilson’s in The Wicked + The Divine. Somewhere between reality and imagination.

Champions #25 kicks off a trip to Weirdworld for the team as they search for where Man-Thing carried off Sam and Nadia, allowing Jim Zub to play around in his fantasy wheelhouse, and giving Sean Izaakse and Max Dunbar to show off some really nice art and designs. The shift into fantasy is really well done, adapting the Champions into the setting through the method of transit there, rather than the more typical straight forward delivery. It gives an interesting counterpoint to the earlier Deadpool #4 and this week’s Weapon H #8 in their own use of Weirdworld.

Dead Rabbit #1 is probably the best crime series debut I’ve read since Hot Lunch Special #1, and this is really damn good. Gerry Duggan and John McCrea create a very compelling lead in Martin Dobbs, the former Dead Rabbit, a retired masked thief now working at a Walmart analogue. McCrea, with colours from Mike Spicer, employs a more restrained form of his usual exaggerated style here and it is gorgeous, fitting the dark reality and gravity of the story.

Death of the Inhumans #4 has a huge revelation that somehow makes everything worse. Yes, worse than killing Lockjaw. Donny Cates, Ariel Olivetti, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles continue the blows coming, even as the Inhuman royal family and Beta Ray Bill attempt to get a modicum of retribution against Vox and the Kree.

Death Orb #1 is off to an interesting start, laying heavy into the post-apocalyptic feel of things like Mad Max and Akira, with a sword of Damocles hanging high above the remaining people’s heads. It’s a familiar world that Ryan Ferrier and Alejandro Aragon have created here, but it’s compelling, making me wonder what more is there for the characters.

Deathstroke #36 kicks off the “Arkham” arc. This is the first issue of this volume of Deathstroke I’ve read, but it flows really well for a new reader, even if you only have a passing knowledge of the various villains in Arkham Asylum. It reads very much in Priest’s style, with scenes broken down by title cards, sections working almost as discrete vignettes at times, and a nice amount of humour thrown in for god measure. Great art from Ed Benes, Fernando Pasarin, Richard Friend, Jason Paz, Wade von Grawbadger, and Jeromy Cox. Although the requisite backstory is provided in text, I’m definitely tempted to go back and read the rest of the series to see what I’ve missed.

Euthanauts #3 is another transcendental experience from Tini Howard, Nick Robles, Eva De La Cruz, and Neil Uyetake. The artwork from Robles and De La Cruz is incredible, with amazing layouts, panel transitions, and character designs that just pull you into the story that the entire creative team is telling.

Giant Days #43 continues the very weird Christmas-themed issues surrounding the Winter Village. Weird in that it’s strange to be reading about Christmas in October, but it’s still chock full of the humour and adroit depiction of university life that the series usually is.

House Amok #2 is a solid follow-up to what has been one of the best first issues this year. Christopher Sebela, Shawn McManus, Lee Loughridge, and Aditya Bidikar have something here that is incredibly different and very compelling for everything else published right now. This issue relays the family’s descent into madness and it’s a fascinating look at how everything can go wrong. Like a cult in microcosm.

Iron Fist #1 is the third of Marvel’s new double-sized digital original ongoing series to be released. Like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage before it, this is very good. Somewhat surprisingly, this one’s a horror story. Clay McLeod Chapman, Guillermo Sanna, Lee Loughridge, and Travis Lanham tap into some Chinese folklore for the antagonist and set up an interesting quandary that borrows elements from Idle Hands and Ash vs. The Army of Darkness.

Jook Joint #1 is a very dark book, tapping into themes of sexual assault, domestic abuse, and horrific, but likely justified, retribution. Understandably, some will find this first issue difficult, not just for the violence, but for the subject matter, but I think presentations of this kind of horror, bringing a mirror up to our darker natures, is necessary and important to tell. Tee Franklin, Alitha E. Martinez, Shari Chankhamma, and Taylor Esposito have something interesting here.

The Last Siege #5 is a bit of turning point for the series, and quite possibly the best issue to date in a series of best issues. The tone and presentation changes as our stranger gets a name, and a backstory, and it’s very well told. Landry Q. Walker, Justin Greenwood, Brad Simpson, and Patrick Brosseau really step up this issue and I’d highly recommend it even if you’ve not been reading since the beginning.

The Lollipop Kids #1 is one of the most beautiful books on the stands this week, with absolutely beautiful artwork from Diego Yapur and DC Alonso. The colour work and depth to the characters is just stunning.

The Lone Ranger #1 begins an interesting story here of land rights and the introduction of gentrification and eminent domain in Texas. Exactly the kind of thing that you’d expect from Mark Russell. There’s still a great deal of action, though, ably delivered from Bob Q, who’s proving here that he’s just as adept at the old American West as he is at WWII England.

Paradiso #8 brings the “Dark Dwellers” arc to a close, even though it sets up much more for the next arc with a particularly harrowing cliffhanger. I love how Ram V and Devmalya Pramanik are telling this story, with ample routes for failure, deception, and characters taking wrong turns. This world isn’t happy, is incredibly flawed, and it shines through in the nuanced storytelling.

Redlands #7 returns after more than half a year and it was well worth the wait. The opening to this next arc continues the plot threads that have been established and points to something new with the arrival of the sisters’ father. Jordie Bellaire, Vanesa Del Rey, and Clayton Cowles drop us right back into the deep end of this layered and compelling horror.

Sparrowhawk #1 is great. It’s a new fantasy in the vein of Alice in Wonderland, but with faeries and a much darker tone, from Delilah S. Dawson, Matias Basla, and Jim Campbell. I love the artwork from Matias Basla, who has a style not dissimilar to Eduardo Risso and Matías Bergara, and it works so incredibly well for dark fantasy.

Spook House 2 #1 is a welcome return, delivering up a new limited series chock full of off-beat, irreverent, and humorous mostly all ages horror stories, just in time for Halloween. This first issue offers four; a tale each from Steve Mannion and Eric Powell, each handling full creative duties themselves, then a go-kart satire of Stephen King’s Christine, by Powell, Jake Smith, and Warren Montgomery, and a take on Swamp Thing dedicated to the memory of Bernie Wrightson and Len Wein, from Powell, Kyle Hotz, and Montgomery. This last one is probably the best of the book and nicely captures the tone and feel of a muck-encrusted monster, with great art from Hotz and Montgomery.

The Superior Octopus #1 is the last stop on the ride before Spider-Geddon proper begins and also serves as a bit of a preview of the forthcoming resurrected Superior Spider-Man series from this same team of Christos Gage and Mike Hawthorne (with Wade von Grawbadger, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles - though I don’t know if they’ll also be on that book). It’s good. The art from Hawthorne, von Grawbadger, and Bellaire is great as expected and Gage has the voice of Octavius down pat.

These Savage Shores #1 is the third brilliant debut from Vault in these past two weeks, and is quite possibly the best first issue of a series this year. This comic is brilliant, in form, style, structure, and execution. Ram V, Sumit Kumar, Vittorio Astone, and Aditya Bidikar don’t just knock this one out of the park, it’s a hit gone from the stratosphere. Most of this team collaborated before on Ruin of Thieves to tell a wonderful story there, with Astone the newcomer on colours, and the result is an excellent creative team to give seamless storytelling.

This is horror, mixed with adventure, playing with the vampire, Indian folktales, colonial expansionism into India, and more coming together into one brilliant package. The fact that it’s mostly told through an epistolary format is the perfect homage to Dracula, but it also gives us an incredible moment later that helps turn those conventions on their ear. And the art is absolutely gorgeous. Kumar and Astone are just incredible. The art is lush, even as it embraces a formalist structure in variations on nine panel grids, mixing what you’d possibly consider the order of the European world with the natural feel of India’s jungles.

Like Fearscape and Friendo, you do not want to sleep on this series. Highly, highly recommended.

Typhoid Fever: Spider-Man #1 is another limited series of specials similar to the recent Wakanda Forever, spotlighting in this case Typhoid Mary, who seems to undergo a bit of a powers change and a new personality development. It’s the second series being written by Clay McLeod Chapman this week, again giving an interesting different perspective to the storytelling, this time incorporating breaks into delusional fantasies of soap operas. Nice art from Stefano Landini and Rachelle Rosenberg.

Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion #1 is a very welcome return after almost a decade. It hits the same notes of weird and action that I’d expect from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá (with colours from Nick Filardi and letters from Nate Piekos). It is, however, probably about as new reader friendly as reading The Return of the King first. I mean, I’ve read the previous series, loved them, and I’m looking to go back and re-read them because I’m sure I’ve missed things. This issue does nothing to help readers to get reacquainted or caught up on what’s come before.

What If...? Spider-Man #1 is among the first of 2018′s volley of What If...? stories. There doesn’t seem to be any particular theme this year, though, just embracing the standard variety of alternate reality formula. Possibly because it’s been three years since the last batch. This one takes on What if Flash Thompson Became Spider-Man? It’s not a half bad story from Gerry Conway, very much taking on the traditional type of morality tale, with some nice art from Diego Olortegui, Walden Wong, and Chris O’Halloran.
