Hi everyone! I just need like two minutes of your time.
Have you enjoyed all the scripts that the @spnscripthunt has posted over the last few years? Have you screenshotted them and written meta and made gif sets or just cried over your favorite scenes again? Have you supported the group in any way?
Would you like to OWN one of those scripts, autographed by the stars of Supernatural?
Maybe you miss participating in GISH, doing some wacky fun good in the world and the style of fundraising we learned there-- that many people making small contributions can come together to change lives.
Well, we are down to our last little stack of scripts now, with no new scripts coming on the horizon. This project has been thrilling, and we're trying to send it all off with a bang. We're giving away the final portion of the collection, all signed by the cast and crew, and hopefully doing a little good in a very big way.
We picked RIPMedicalDebt as our final charity, because of the exponential power of increasing how far our donations will go. $10 donated pays of $1,000 of medical debt, free and clear with no tax burden to the recipients! With a small donation, you could literally change someone's life.
We get that folks outside the US might not understand how completely messed up the US healthcare system is, so for some perspective, 65% of people who file for bankruptcy in this country do so directly because of crushing medical debt. We know personally how horrifying the medical insurance system is in this country. One illness, one accident, can be financially devastating. But we can save a few people from having it completely destroy their lives.
We got the idea from John Oliver. This entire episode is eye-opening about debt in the US in general, but the part we're specifically interested it begins around 17 minutes in.
youtube
We're already a quarter of the way to our goal! Thank you to everyone who's already donated! What we need now is to spread the word!
If you've spent any time at all enjoying the work we've done, the scripts we've collected and shared with fandom, we're hoping you'll consider sharing our posts widely with anyone who might be interested. Our contact network has been demolished as twitter collapses (and historically the vast majority of our contributors have come from twitter), and we're practically begging just for a signal boost.
All the details on how to donate, and then enter the raffle can be found right here:
You can also see all the prizes we'll be making available, too! And if for some reason you're not interested in a prize and just would like to support the campaign, that's fine too, of course!
(but the prizes are super cool... at least we think so...)
You only have until November 5, 2023 to enter the raffle, and our final group of prizes will unlock when we hit $5000 donated (which could pay off half a million dollars in medical debt!)
Please help us spread the word, and good luck!

Playlist Makes Brain Go Brrrrr
First off, the playlist in question here was created by the amazing @softomegaposting. They did and excellent job I'd highly recommend listening to it first, especially if you weren't familiar with the songs like me!
Vibe Assessment
I was really struggling to describe the tone of this playlist. To solve that, I....may or may not have roped in some of my irl music-loving friends.
I challenged myself to describe this playlist without mentioning omegaverse. These are the phrases I came up with: "utopian domesticity and All its vile implications", "calming your lover down like they're a feral animal", "you've been reduced to your body and pray you will transcend physicality", "bawling your eyes out as the credits of an indie romcom roll", and "healing a debutante of her tuberculosis despite knowing her illness is prized".
After many listen-throughs, I still stand by these descriptions, except for the tuberculosis one (though it has great potential to be for another dynamic).
I think it's interesting how you found songs that have shockingly great parallels to omegas. "Froot", "Calm Me Down", and "One Day Robots Will Cry" FLOORED me when I first heard them because of this. I thought the religious aspect to some of the songs was interesting; not only were they good portrayals of that nuanced worship, but it also fit into the late 20th century domesticity theme?? I don't know, it's just *chef's kiss*
Song Reccs
Dicslaimer
What this is: Chai trying their best at using their and their friends' knowledge to find songs that Chai would include if this were their playlist. Chai is heavily biased by their musical background, and tries their best to explain the issues they have with each recc What this is NOT: Chai stating that these songs should actually be added, that these are the perfect/most-fitting songs for the playlist, or that these songs were chosen purely through an objective pattern-seeking lens
Friend's picks:
"Video Games" by Lana del Rey, "Abandoned" by Alexander Ryback,
Putting this category first because it's the shortest and also incomplete since I'm still waiting on another friend's reccs. To be fair, my friends had way more suggestions than this, but these were the only two I felt really fit the themes described? But they're, naturally, missing the canine edge
My picks:
"Sweet Nothing" by Taylor Swift, "Grenadine" by Dreadlight, "Impostor Syndrome" by Sidney Gish, "Los Angeles" by Sugarcult,
"Sweet Nothing" hurts the most if it's played directly after "Hey Good Lookin", which is what took it out of the Honorable Mentions category tbh. It is the only song I believe actively captures one of the listed descriptors
"Grenadine" feels like it has the most on-the-nose for feral animal energy, but I also feel like it doesn't nail the theme 100%? It has more of a 'man-eater' vibe than anything
"Impostor Syndrome" is just a personal favorite of mine, omegaverse aside. Content-wise, a song about feeling disturbingly different/lesser than others feels very omega-coded, at least by many verses' standards. Lines like "these sweet instincts/ruin my life" and "for canine/grossly overqualified" are just icing on the cake
LISTEN!!! “Los Angeles” is THE typical omegean heat story. This is the hardest song to place in the descriptors, since it's describing a common trope instead of the psyche of an omega, but I've thought about this song for too long to not mention it. There's something very omega in struggling between intimacy and just getting through the day, especially as you try to fight against the "heat".
Honorable mentions:
"Summertime" by Dutch Criminal Records, "Sirens" by Elefant, "Sanctuary" by Utada, "The Detail" by Delta Sleep, "Self Defense" by Paul Westerberg, "The Garden" by the Crane Wives
Out of all of these, I think "The Garden" is the strongest, but I couldn't sit down and explain why to you if I tried :')
"Sanctuary" is here because I listened to FOB's "Church" and heard the singular word 'santcuary'. And then I read the lyrics and debated for 20 minutes on if this was a good addition, so I compromised and put it here
"Self Defense" first entered the scene for the 'cheekbones and hormones' line, and remained because it felt on-theme in its somberness
"Summertime", "Sirens", and "the Detail" were just ones that stood out when I was pilfering through Spotify, and fit the musical themes enough for me to say "fuck it, someone could reasonably interpolate this probably"
A few other artists I listened to on the quest for suitable reccs: Owl City, The Smith's, Crystal Castles, The Pierces, Melanie Martinez, the Front Bottoms, and the Barbie album (haven't seen the movie yet either oops). I wish I could've gone through so much more, but life really caught up to me

17, 22, and 31!
17. What is something you're really good at? Why do I feel like I can't answer any of these? lmao. Um...I'm pretty good at word games! And rhythm games!
22. What is your most prized possession? Uhh. Hmm. Do I have a prized possession? I don't think I do, lol. OH OKAY I THOUGHT OF ONE! One of my best friends gave me this dragon figure in high school because he knew I loved dragons, lol. He had another one, so we matched. We aren't close anymore, but I still have it and think of him. Not exactly a "prized possession" but something I really like for sentimental reasons?
31. Describe yourself with 3 singers. Ooh, I like this question!
Julia Nunes is definitely #1. Her voice even sounds sort of like mine. But her songs are just so...sincere. And she just seems like such a genuine, open person. And also her music is great.
#2. Sidney Gish. Her songs are...quirky, I guess, is the best way to say it? You'll get it when you listen. I just think her songs are really creative but also fun!
#3. Mal Blum. Might just be the voice, honestly, lol, but I think their songs are also really creative and kind of about random things but also somehow meaningful!

The hyper local focus of the Acts of Kindness program is really special to me. I've used one of their grants to even help at my local soup kitchen!
Tumblr media
And if you feel inspired to do an "Act of Kindness", here's the link! I promise, it's an easy process: https://www.randomacts.org/acts/
As I mentioned in the show, @/mishacollins is still raising funds to de-mine Ukraine 🇺🇦 & you can support the effort here:
And did I mention the lovely artist for this pod, @/__ellie is ALSO a Random Acts volunteer?! 💕
Anyways, thanks to @/DrAnnaFunk for editorial support when I get too ramble-y & @/ChrisPScott1984 for writing the shows music.
You can support the pod here: https://ko-fi.com/in_defense_of_fandom
Just a point of clarification: our World Central Kitchen fundraiser kicks off on Sat, July 29 (we needed more time to finish getting autos at cons, we've gotten them from cons here in the states, as well as in Canada, UK, and Italy). The raffle closes on Sat, Aug 26 and we'll announce winners on Tues, Aug 29. More info to come.

1987 Cannes Film Festival
The 40th Cannes Film Festival was held from 7 to 19 May 1987. The Palme d'Or went to the Sous le soleil de Satan by Maurice Pialat, a choice which was considered "highly controversial" and the prize was given under the jeers of the public. The Whales of August directed by Lindsay Anderson, starring Lillian Gish, Bette Davis, Ann Sothern, Vincent Price was selected to be screened out of competition. Gish's performance was received glowingly, winning her the National Board of Review Award for Best Actress. At the Cannes festival Lillian won a 10-minute standing ovation from the audience. Some in the entertainment industry were angry that Gish did not receive an Oscar nomination for her role in The Whales of August. Whales was her last movie.

[Watches the closet incident roar, gish burn in entitled frenzies, travis aaron wade come back and start attacking fans]
oh well, not my problem anymore
would suck if someone got tired of being used as unpaid full time infosec and PR that shrugged and walked out. Would suck if the secretaries involved had been taking credit for someone else's endeavors all those years and couldn't get reigns on this horse anymore if they tried.
i got my compensation and it's airing this February and that's all I'm ever gonna get but damn. Kinda funny to watch what happens in a few mere months, resulting.
yall want my services after this, you better think dollar bills. I don't need that shit anymore, I got done what i came here for.
But sure, bitch about your 2500 prize that's in the fine print. Threaten frivolous lawsuits. You guys clearly have great perspective here and this isn't just the result of unchecked fandom entitlement without pre-emptive infosec. You know, the issue I've talked about in this fandom for the last forever, almost like I was having to personally constantly deal with it.

Stormtrooper Armor, Mark 2
Tumblr media
In 2013, I was living in a small town in Iowa, and I not happy.  I was not happy in a way I couldn’t begin to process until I’d gotten a new job and was moving out of town.  But that was over a year away yet.  To cope, I fell into Supernatural, hard.  I caught up by watching syndicated reruns before work in the mornings on TNT, and I was keeping an eye out online for anything related to Supernatural.
I found a video, of Misha Collins, and several other, non-actor people.  They were staying in a haunted castle in Scotland, and it looked like so much fun!  The trip was the grand prize for something called Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen, or Gishwhes.  And a new hunt was starting up in a couple months.  (Super)Naturally, I decided to play. (No, I will not apologize for that pun.)
There’s more about Gish online, so I’m not gonna repeat it here, but I was hooked. The hunt list was huge, and there was an item that sounded really cool:
5. IMAGE: A stormtrooper at a laundry mat folding clothes. (56 points) (From https://www.fangirlquest.com/gish/gish-item-list-2013/)
I didn’t have any kind of Stormtrooper costume, so I let that one go and made a bikini out of tea bags instead.  But I kept that item in mind, in case they did a Stormtrooper item next year.
The point of Gish, at least as I always played, was not to spend money, but to get creative.  Stortrooper armor is really fucking expensive, and the sets I’ve seen are meant for the troopers in the movies, i.e., adult men.  I am nowhere near the same size as an adult man, so even if I could afford armor, it would be too big.
There’s a community of folks called the 501st Legion, which are stormtrooper cosplayers.  They make their own armor, as screen-accurate as possible.  You’ve seen them before, they tend to be asked to appear whenever somebody needs A Lot of stormtroopers for an event.  These folks are hard core, at least compared to me.  They build vacu-forming machines in their garages to custom fabricate their armor (this was before 3D printing was widely available).  Well, I did not have the time, money, or space to build a vacu-forming contraption.
But I had another idea: duct tape.  I thought, if I covered cardboard with white duct tape, I could fashion a set of armor for myself.  So I went looking for a pattern, and started to save boxes.  It took over a year, but I pulled it off!  I did buy the helmet, and the boots were slipcovered with white vinyl fabric (think Pizza Hut table cloth fabric), cut from a pattern for Ugg-style slippers.
Tumblr media
This lovely person has created Sand Trooper armor, which are the patterns I used. Thank you so much, kind cosplayer!  I couldn’t have done this without you! http://foamysandtrooper.blogspot.com/
That armor served me well until 2022.  But it was so hard to move in, and after so many times taking it off and putting it on, it looked pretty sad.  Also, I made this armor before The Force Awakens came out, so the armor wasn’t actually attached to me.  I had to wear a belt and use loops of nylon strap material to keep the thigh armor from sliding down my leg.  After I saw Finn taking off his armor piece by piece, I thought that in my next version, I’d use something to make the armor attached to the black underclothes.  Maybe Velcro.  Plus the cardboard hwas heavy and bulky, and there had to be a better material.
And yeah, I know, most cosplay armorers use Worbla or craft foam, but I have zero experience with that, and I’d hate to screw up on a huge project with expensive materials.  I thought I’d have better luck with posterboard.
I played with ideas, and in 2018, after Gish, I even bought some poster board and white duct tape to get started.
And then I got a new job, and I had to move, and learn a new area.  And the old armor still looked good in photos, so I let it go. And so it went, until summer 2022.
2014 3. IMAGE. It’s “me time.” Spoil, pamper and be decadent to yourself like you never have before. Oh, and P.S., you’re dressed as a Stormtrooper. (48 points)
Tumblr media
2015 179. IMAGE. Work opportunities are scarce since the Death Star blew up. Let’s see a stormtrooper working at their job as a waiter, fast food line prep, car mechanic, postal worker, deli sandwich maker, road-repair worker, etc). – Katherine Parsons (65 points)
Tumblr media
2016 #76 97 POINTS Nobody ever talks about the fact that 250 years ago, stormtroopers who had been abandoned on planet Earth were forced to assimilate into pre-Industrial culture. Dramatically re-enact this difficult time. Show a stormtrooper getting back to basics using a spinning wheel, butter churn, or other old-fashioned tool or machine in a rural setting. Feel free to add accessories to the stormtrooper’s outfit to make their assimilation more complete—a Shaker-style hat, a musket slung over the shoulder, etc.
Tumblr media
2017
#116 65 POINTS Not many people know this, but the Kessel Run was actually a foot race. Let’s see at least 5 Star Wars characters competing in the Kessel Run in a shopping mall.
Tumblr media
2018
60 POINTS Assign To Me Submit Modern stormtroopers are so much more enlightened these days. They’re in touch with their “new age” side and have their chakras aligned. In fact, you just spotted one teaching a yoga class or leading some other new-age class.
Tumblr media
2019
34. [IMAGE] The Federation of Stormtroopers has been officially sponsored by the X Games this year. Let’s see a highlight from one of their competitions with the stormtrooper participating in an extreme sport. (81 points)
Tumblr media
2020 main hunt
247. [IMAGE] Where do stormtroopers go in the summer? To summer camp, just like the rest of us. Show us a Stormtrooper engaged in a typical summer-camp activity: canoeing, sailing, archery, making s’mores or playing guitar by a campfire… you get the idea. (37 points)
Tumblr media
2020 October mini hunt
63. [IMAGE] Everybody knows Stormtroopers love Halloween. Show a Stormtrooper dressed up as what they REALLY wanted to be — a gentle, sweet or heroic costume like a ballerina, a firefighter, a fairy, etc. They should be in their Stormtrooper armor as well as their costume, of course. (41 points)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2022
191. [IMAGE] It’s tea time for Bananakin Skywalker and his Sconetroopers. Show us a Stormtrooper tea party. (72 points)
Tumblr media
Gish is on an indefinite hiatus now, and I’m looking at another move.  But before I pack up everything again, I decided it was time to finally finish my new set of armor, so I could stop carrying around the old set.  And now, after months of work, it’s done!  I don’t know how many rolls of duct tape it took, but it was easily 10.  And I still want to try making a helmet, based on the speeder bike troopers, since theirs is the only helmet that would let human eyes look out.  But that’s for later, maybe this summer.
Thank you, Mark 1 Stormtrooper armor.  You went above and beyond what I imagined.  You are now relieved of duty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And welcome, Mark 2 Stormtrooper armor! Can’t wait to see what shenanigans we get up to!

December’s event will feature notable BC lawyer, mediator, and conflict resolution expert Sharon Sutherland who will share her story of how creativity has shown up in work and life through the lens of the global theme ‘pain’.
Sharon was one of the first Project Managers of the BC Court Mediation Program (1998-2003). From 2000-2014, Sharon was a faculty member at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law where, in addition to a range of substantive legal courses, she taught an intensive clinical mediation program and supervised the Faculty’s Judicial Externship program. From 2006-2010, Sharon worked with Mediate BC to develop a province-wide Child Protection Mediation Practicum aimed at increasing the number of child protection mediators in under-serviced parts of BC. From 2014-2016, Sharon worked as a Knowledge Engineer in the development of the Civil Resolution Tribunal, focusing on both Strata and Small Claims streams.
With her background in practicum design and management, Sharon has a special interest in mediation mentorship. She has been a mediation mentor in a variety of programs (Small Claims, Child Protection, community mediations) since 1997. She is a founding Board member of CoRe Conflict Resolution Society where she manages the Speaker Series.
In June 2021, Sharon received an honorary doctorate from the Justice Institute of BC for contributions to conflict resolution through practice, advocacy, and the training and mentoring of mediators. Sharon also was honoured with the 2011 Susanna Jani Prize for Excellence in Mediation.
In addition to an LL.M. in ADR from Osgoode Hall Law School, Sharon received a M.A. in Drama and Theatre Studies from the University of London, and completed all work but her thesis towards a Ph.D. in Drama from the University of Toronto. This theatrical background continues to inform her teaching and practice. Sharon has participated in a variety of academic and practice-oriented projects in applied improvisation, Theatre of the Oppressed, and other theatre tools for conflict resolution.
Sharon is keenly interested in games as a tool for supporting team building, conflict prevention and conflict management. She has hosted several Collaborative Game Jams, and is a member of PignPotato Games. She is one of the designers of Zombie Fight or Flight, a collaborative card game, and designs and hosts Scavenger Hunts for team building.
Every month we ask our speaker a handful of probing questions to give us a deeper glimpse into their life and relationship with creativity:
How do you define creativity and apply it in your life and career? Margaret Boden’s definition of creativity as the ability to come up with ideas that are ”new, surprising, and valuable” resonates with me because it’s wide-ranging and captures possibilities in all areas of life. I try to appreciate creativity in all of its forms - artistic endeavours, cooking, strategic planning, games, team sports, etc.
Where do you find your best creative inspiration or energy? I’m energized by new experiences, change, and (unfortunately, perhaps) deadlines.
What’s one piece of creative advice or a tip you wish you’d known as a young person? Creativity applies to everything, including creating the work you want to be doing.
Who (living or dead) would you most enjoy hearing speak at CreativeMornings? Tahmoh Penikett, Rachel Bloom, Baba Brinkman.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Captained a GISH team to victory! Essentially 8 days of making 223 of 227 impossible tasks and goofy acts of kindness happen. Personal craziest tasks would include acting as judge on the diving board of a literal jury pool, setting up a giant game of red rover with 53 wedding guests, re-enacting the pottery scene from “Ghost” using cement, public maple syrup and glittering a teammate, and zombie slow-speed tag at the mall.
What are you reading these days? Fanfiction - endless creativity and, occasional guilty pleasure, combined.
Where was the last place you travelled? Last non-work travel was to Greenland, and now I want to go straight back!

Duel in the Sun (1946)
Selznick’s next project for Jennifer Jones was his much publicised, expensive ($5,255,000) production of Duel in the Sun (1946), an opulent, unrelentingly brutal, grandiose Western that took over a year and a half to make and which has been called by some a Wagnerian horse opera and a Liehestod among the cactus. Like Since You Went Away, it was another exercise in Selznick’s obsession with surpassing Gone With the Wind, and he cast his prize actress-amour as Pearl Chavez, the tempestuous half-breed who comes between two brothers (Joseph Cotten and Gregory Peck). The plot included prostitution, rape, suicide, attempted fratricide, and ended with a protracted gun duel between Pearl and the outlaw brother (Peck) in which both are killed. Duel in the Sun earned both Miss Jones and supporting actress Lillian Gish nominations for Academy Awards, and $11,300,000 at the box-office, despite its critical lambasting.
