So back in 2021 The Asylum released Ape vs. Monster, their “response” to Godzilla vs. Kong. Say what you will about that movie, but I was AMAZED by the design of the titular monster, Gila, and was about to praise the hell out of them for it:
Tumblr media
...but then it turned out they just bought the model from TurboSquid and so can you too (link in the source), it’s called “Dino Beast”:
Tumblr media
So now they released a sequel to their movie, Ape vs. Mecha Ape, and the design of the titular Mecha Ape is also amazing. Suspiciously so.
youtube
I couldn’t find the model on TurboSquid, but I thought it looked familiar.
Tumblr media
Searching for figures online where I live it’s very common to come across bootlegs, now more than ever with 3D printing technology, some people may get their hands on the file of a model someone else did and either sell the 3d printed figure or the file itself, most likely without the original artist’s knowledge. Add to that the popularity of Godzilla vs. Kong, wich featured a Mechagodzilla, and you come across stuff like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet “Mecha King Kong”, as online sellers call it. I assume they won’t call it “Mechanikong” because if you know who that is you probably will know this isn’t an official thing. I can’t find who the original artist is.
Tumblr media
Now the bodies look completely different, but the head...
Tumblr media
There are some differences, like the eyeballs, the forehead, the jaw, and the lenght of the “airvents”. But many of the details are so similar I simply can’t believe it’s just a coincidence:
Tumblr media
Now, if the guys at The Asylum are one thing, it’s legaly savvy. There is a reason they’ve succesfully been in the mockbuster business for DECADES. I’m sure they didn’t steal an asset like these neobootleggers probably did, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the “Mecha Ape” and “Mecha King Kong” 3D models have a common origin somewhere down the line.
If there is something I take from all this unprompted cashing-in on robot gorillas, is that if the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel were to feature a robot Kong (Mechanikong or otherwise), audiences and bootlegers would welcome it with open arms.
(Also is this “Ape” fella going to be their new “Mega Shark”?)

I hate how you randomly get those bursts of wanting to create stuff...
I’ve built all the models by hand in Maya, including the stands. Mothra is my first ever prototype with Scylla and Manda after. There are going to be 2 copies of each on my shelves- one printed with white filament to serve as the prototype model and another final painted piece.
There are two more kaijus waiting to be printed. Though I don’t know when I’ll be done with them, I am diligently working against the 3d program’s 30 day trial period...

Kaiju Week in Review (March 10-16, 2024)
"It looks as though its Japanese producers, assisted by a stray American—fellow named Terry Morse, who is an alumnus of Hollywood's Poverty Row—made a close study of the old film, "King Kong," then tried to do substantially the same thing with a miniature of a dinosaur made of gum-shoes and about $20 worth of toy buildings and electric trains." —Bosley Crowther, reviewing Godzilla, King of the Monsters! for The New York Times
"The special effects are hardly special, but hey, what do you expect in a Japanese monster movie?" —Tony Kiss, reviewing Godzilla 1985 for the Asheville Citizen-Times
"Sure it's bad filmmaking. Sure it's a guy—actor Tsutomu Kitagawa—clad in a nearly vintage latex Godzilla getup and stomping through Tokyo, knocking down cardboard mini-buildings and upending toy-sized cars with his gnarly feet. But that's the point." —Bob Longino, reviewing Godzilla 2000 for The Palm Beach Post

Godzilla Minus One won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, sending a stunned Takashi Yamazaki (VFX supervisor), Kiyoko Shibuya (VFX director), Masaki Takahashi (3D CG director), and Tatsuji Nojima (VFX artist/compositor) to the Dolby Theatre stage. Said Yamazaki, reading from prepared comments in English, "To someone so far from Hollywood, the possibility of standing on this stage seemed out of reach." I could scarcely believe what I was watching myself, despite having given a presentation for a Wikizilla stream mere hours before on Minus One's very real chances of beating more expensive American contenders. Everything I said about its nomination goes triple for its victory; we'll be talking about this one forever. To those of us who remember when Godzilla was basically a joke in the American consciousness (including my Wikizilla colleague Darthlord1997, who had a speech of his own prepared), it's the ultimate vindication.
youtube
Never one to rest on his laurels, Takashi Yamazaki directed an ad for Ajinomoto about food waste which released this week. It features the unsubtly-named Foodlosslla attacking Tokyo and facing an Ultraman-esque defense team. As with Minus One, the ad's visuals are a clever combination of high-end (a detailed CG monster) and low-end (dropping plastic fruit on top of fleeing extras).

Last year, the 4Kids Flashback podcast interviewed Mike Pecoriello, producer and writer for the company's renditions of Yu-Gi-Oh! and Ultraman Tiga, and he delivered some major news about the latter. Although only 23 episodes of Tiga aired in the U.S., 4Kids dubbed the whole thing. At the time of the podcast's recording, he thought he made copies of all the episodes, but while that doesn't seem to be the case, he did provide 4Kids Flashback with the series finale. It's a good deal more serious than the episodes which aired, with the quips kept to a minimum. Let the hunt for the rest commence!

SciFi Japan has details on Kaiju Yarrow, a Japanese comedy doubling as a tourism ad for the city of Seki. The premise is very self-aware:
KAIJU YARROW! is set in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. One day, 30 year old Ichiro Yamada, who works in the tourism department of a government office, is ordered by the mayor to produce a "local film.'' However, Yamada, didn't want to produce the typical "mediocre local movies'' that are everywhere nowadays, so he comes up with the idea of making a "monster movie'', which has been his life-long dream. However, his dreams develops into a major incident involving the city government...! Will Yamada be able to complete his life goal of making a monster movie??
Junichiro Yagi will direct; YouTuber Gunpee will star. Unknown quantities both when it comes to kaiju, so how this will turn out is anyone's guess.

No need to apologize ppl are busy I understand ;)
1: what’s their biggest pet peeve?
2: what’s something they both can’t agree on? Best spider-man actor, best Star Wars trilogy, etc…
3: what’s their favorite & least favorite animated Christmas movies?
4: is Jon & mar’is reaction the same as the duo when they react to: somebody getting hit in the nuts both real life & movie/cartoon, toliet humor, & the whole rikishi stink face thing?
5: for the duo, what’s the best gift they got for each other? I can see Jake giving Chris a blue domino mask with white lenses.
6: are the duo fans of the game awards? If so, what game are they hoping for win game of the year?
7: not really a question but I like the little fanfic snippet of “Lava bridges & you” would love to see a full fanfiction of that, would love to help to ;)
Thanks for your patience. It’s very appreciated ;-)@gothicghost2000
1) For Chris, while getting his superhero identity confused with Dick’s Nightwing is an all too common way to annoy him a bit, a far bigger one for him would be hearing and looking at comments of all sorts that claim Superman being a ‘lame’, ‘boring’, ‘Un-relatable’ and overall ‘dull excuse’ of a superhero who should step aside in favor of any other heroes, especially Batman, just because they’re ‘cooler’ and ‘edgier’. Yeah he doesn’t take it too kindly deep down of people having those thoughts about his adopted dad. Frankly neither Jon nor him is they would be honest.
For Jake, it’s from what he can admit is a tad bit more petty on his end and he apologizes for it. That said, do not mock the original Discowing in front of him. Jake looks up to that first suit his father made with pride and he will not be taking any badmouthing against it if he can help it, No siree. Not even family members are other Titans are safe from his objections to their opinions should they make fun of Discowing
2) Best Star Wars film (Chris votes on A New Hope while Jake firmly believes it’s The Force Awakens) , Best Pizza Place (Jake will always back the local Marv and George’s while Chris favors Shakey’s) , Fairly Oddparents (Jake) vs Jimmy Neutron (Chris) but most of all and most fiercely, the Best Godzilla film ever made (besides the 1954 OG; Chris champions Godzilla vs Monster Zero while Jake touts King of the Mosnters 2019 as the best)
3) Chris
- Favorite: Elf (2005) (Not just for the obvious reason of it being funny as heck but also since it deals with themes of adoption and trying to fit in, he can relate so well with Buddy)
- Least Favorite: Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer (Mainly cause the song it’s based on just sounds too morbid for a cherry beat and tone)
Jake
- Favorite: The Muppet Christmas Carol (Alfred and him almost every single time at the family’s Christmas party do a karaoke of ‘A Thankful Heart’)
- Least Favorite: The Nutcracker 3D: The Untold Story (Those visuals all throughout the movie….he can never get them out of his head no matter how hard he tries)
4) More or less almost the same though Jon is tad bit more likely to have a small chuckle with watching a Stink Face as long as it’s short and against a true heel. Mar’i also doesn’t cringe as hard with nut shots as she had seen her Dad pull that off during Father-Daughter patrols together sometimes and the reactions from the crooks who receive are pretty funny form a distance.
5) While Jake’s best gift for Chris was that mask as described, in turn thanks to Chris, Jake was given a rare one of a kind 12-inch replica of Voltron which being a fan of, all to well bringing a big smile to Jake’s face
6) They’re a bit more casual than most when it comes to those shows as the Duo really only enjoy the games they play and Jude on their own merits. That said as for this year, Chris and Jake are hoping for Super Mario Bros Wonder to win Game of the Year as they love that one
7) You know maybe later this month I can write a small snippet to expand it. Not saying it’s a guarantee but it’s certainly an idea now that you brought it up lol

William Stout with a model (left) of the Godzilla he designed for an aborted 1983 American film, Godzilla, King of the Monsters in 3D.  Fred Miner (Friday the 13th Part 3) was going to direct from a script by Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad, Night of the Creeps).
The Godzilla model, complete with interior steel armature, was constructed by Steve Czerkas.  Godzilla in the film was going to be stop-motion animated, not suitmation.
Make-up and creature design maestro Rick Baker (King Kong 1976, American Werewolf in London) was hired to build a large scale robotic Godzilla head.
Unfortunately, the project did not go forward because no one in Hollywood at the time wanted to spend money on what was felt to be a children’s property.

the relationship between paleontology and animation? would u care to elaborate, im highly interested 👀
Not only could I spend 30 minutes talking about this but I DID for my History of Animation class. Unfortunately I don't have the files so ur just gettin a couple paragraphs (I also lost my big beautiful reference list so... feel free to fact check but this should all be accurate).
BASICALLY animation and paleontology got their start around the same time (late 1800s-early 1900s) and the two fields have been inspiring each other ever since.
Paleontology inspires animation because dinosaurs are cool but also because they're something that can only come to life with animation. One of the earliest animators, Winsor McCay was accused of tracing photographs so he decided to make a film about something that had never been photographed. Thus 'Gertie the Dinosaur' was born! By today's standards the silent film isn't great, but for the time it was groundbreaking! One of the ways it was so special was that it helped introduce dinosaurs to the public. At the time, dinosaurs were so unknown, a lot of the promotional materials for Gertie had to explain what dinosaurs were.
Later McCay would make an animated short called 'The Pet'... which did NOT have dinosaurs but inspired King Kong which DID have dinosaurs (animated with stop-motion)! King Kong would go on to be a source of inspiration for Godzilla, which would go on to be a source of inspiration for Jurassic Park. (Which may or may not be relevant but is cool trivia if ur a dinosaur/animation nerd!)
Jurassic Park gets its own paragraph cuz it had a massive impact on both animation and paleontology. It was one of the earliest uses of CG in a big, blockbuster film, it proved that CG was capable of creating something extremely lifelike, and it kickstarted the use of CG FX in the film industry (which has now gotten kinda crazy (CG-ing a gun into Nick Fury's hand?!) but capitalist greed leading to an out of control monster is very Jurassic Park). On a more positive note: Jurassic Park started a 'Golden Age' in paleontology. It was such a massively popular film with the most visually realistic (if inaccurate) dinosaurs ever animated that a lot of paleontologists today say Jurassic Park was the thing that got them interested in studying dinosaurs. (There's also been an increase in women paleontologists with some saying they were inspired by Dr Sattler!)
Jurassic Park had another positive effect for paleontology: the CG boom meant technology advanced and became more accessible (ie better and cheaper). Dinosaurs are being brought to life with more accuracy than ever in hyper-realistic CG documentaries (I'm not gonna get appleTV but boy did Prehistoric Planet tempt me).
Some paleontologists use animation tools for academics as well. I don't have my sources anymore but I specifically found a (very dry) paleontological article in which they examined the potential mobility range of a carnivorous dinosaur's jaw using Blender--a free 3D animation program!
All we have left of dinosaurs are bones and fossils, so paleontology is always gonna be linked with art and animation; it's the only way to see what dinosaurs looked like and how they moved. Which is depressing, but kind of cool cuz it means as long as we love and study dinosaurs we'll keep getting animated dinosaurs.
tldr; God creates dinosaurs. God kills dinosaurs. God creates man. Man creates animated dinosaurs. Man (and woman) think that's cool af and become paleontologists.
