So back in 2021 The Asylum released Ape vs. Monster, their “response” to Godzilla vs. Kong. Say what you will about that movie, but I was AMAZED by the design of the titular monster, Gila, and was about to praise the hell out of them for it:
Tumblr media
...but then it turned out they just bought the model from TurboSquid and so can you too (link in the source), it’s called “Dino Beast”:
Tumblr media
So now they released a sequel to their movie, Ape vs. Mecha Ape, and the design of the titular Mecha Ape is also amazing. Suspiciously so.
youtube
I couldn’t find the model on TurboSquid, but I thought it looked familiar.
Tumblr media
Searching for figures online where I live it’s very common to come across bootlegs, now more than ever with 3D printing technology, some people may get their hands on the file of a model someone else did and either sell the 3d printed figure or the file itself, most likely without the original artist’s knowledge. Add to that the popularity of Godzilla vs. Kong, wich featured a Mechagodzilla, and you come across stuff like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet “Mecha King Kong”, as online sellers call it. I assume they won’t call it “Mechanikong” because if you know who that is you probably will know this isn’t an official thing. I can’t find who the original artist is.
Tumblr media
Now the bodies look completely different, but the head...
Tumblr media
There are some differences, like the eyeballs, the forehead, the jaw, and the lenght of the “airvents”. But many of the details are so similar I simply can’t believe it’s just a coincidence:
Tumblr media
Now, if the guys at The Asylum are one thing, it’s legaly savvy. There is a reason they’ve succesfully been in the mockbuster business for DECADES. I’m sure they didn’t steal an asset like these neobootleggers probably did, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the “Mecha Ape” and “Mecha King Kong” 3D models have a common origin somewhere down the line.
If there is something I take from all this unprompted cashing-in on robot gorillas, is that if the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel were to feature a robot Kong (Mechanikong or otherwise), audiences and bootlegers would welcome it with open arms.
(Also is this “Ape” fella going to be their new “Mega Shark”?)

There are amino acids in my CPU.
A movie for sure. The science is poorly researched and the understanding of how to handle animals is abysmal. Please, PLEASE, never say the word CPU again. Overall an experience best had if you are susceptible to rage induced by the lack of common sense or basic understanding of science, mechanics, and coding. Hope Chicago enjoys the next 100 years of radioactive fallout impacting their environment.
Overall: Low C tier

APE VS. MECHA APE (2023) Review of The Asylum sequel plus trailer
‘This $#!t is bananas!’ Ape vs. Mecha Ape is a 2023 American monster movie about a battle between a giant gorilla and a massive robot primate. The film is a sequel to Ape vs Monster. Written and directed by Marc Gottlieb (Cousin Howard; writer of 2025 Armageddon; Jungle Run; Aquarium of the Dead; Fast and Fierce: Death Race; Triassic World; Alien Convergence; Planet of the Sharks). Hi Vex,
I had a mech idea/concept that I really want to flesh out but I'm not exactly sure how to best build it. The idea came from a conversation I had with my group about the Mecha genre vs the Sailor Moon/Magical Girl genre. And I thought, 'what if they kissed worked together?' So I decided to try and build a Magical Girl themed Mech.
So far, I am considering using Manticore as a base frame because I am really tempted to call it Sailor RA and do the whole "In the name of RA, I will CASTIGATE you!" thing. Other than that I'm thinking about maybe a Controller type build and/or maybe focusing on the really weird/paracausal abilities? Do you have any ideas for this kind of build?
Thank you!!!
Since we're doing Sailor Moon Magical Girl stuff, have you considered that instead of using the Manticore, you could use the Lycan, a Manticore altframe from the upcoming Operation Winter Scar module?
-- HORUS Lycan @ LL6 -- [ LICENSES ] HORUS Manticore 2, IPS-N Nelson 2, IPS-N Blackbeard 2 [ CORE BONUSES ] Overpower Caliber, Gyges Frame [ TALENTS ] Executioner 3, Nuclear Cavalier 3, Walking Armory 3 [ STATS ] HULL:4 AGI:2 SYS:0 ENGI:2 STRUCTURE:4 HP:21 ARMOR:2 STRESS:4 HEATCAP:8 REPAIR:5 TECH ATK:+1 LIMITED:+1 SPD:4 EVA:8 EDEF:10 SENSE:8 SAVE:13 [ WEAPONS ] Integrated: Shock Claws Integrated: Fuel Rod Gun FLEX MOUNT: Thermal Rifle HEAVY MOUNT: Nanocarbon Sword (Thermal Charge) // Overpower Caliber [ SYSTEMS ] Personalizations, Beckoner, Smite, Armament Redundancy
I call this one ECLIPSING BINARY SUPERGIANT PRISM POWER MAKEUP.
So the Lycan's basic conceit is that it's a two state system. You start combat with your normal stats as listed above, and a dormant superheavy weapon called the Shock Claws that cannot be used.
It has Slag Carapace just like the Manticore, giving it resistance to Energy and Burn damage. However, it replaces the Manticore's Unstable System, Charged Exoskeleton and CASTIGATE THE ENEMIES OF THE GODHEAD traits with two new ones. Interference Field causes nearby enemies to take Difficulty on attacks that don't target the Lycan, and Power Flux, which causes enemies to potentially become Impaired and Slowed if you take heat.
Your mech plays mostly like a normal Manticore for the first part of the fight. However, at any time, you may activate your core power, GO LOUD, which as a full action causes your mech to violently shed its outer plating. You lose Slag Carapace and Interference Field, your base Armor becomes 0 and your base speed becomes 6. You may then immediately move your speed and attack an enemy with your Shock Claws.
That's not all, however: you can charge up your Shock Claws by watching your allies get hurt.
If your friends take Structure damage before you GO LOUD, it charges up your Shock Claws. They initially deal 3d6+6 AP Energy damage (Overkill) in Threat 1 (although Gyges Frame already bumps that up to Threat 2) and cause another nearby enemy to take 1d6 AP Energy damage. If you see an ally take Structure damage, that goes up to Threat 2 (Threat 3 with Gyges). If you see an ally take Structure damage a second time, the damage increases to 4d6+6 AP Energy (Overkill) and the number of enemies who get struck by secondary damage increases to 2.
If an ally is destroyed in your line of sight before you GO LOUD, your Shock Claws instantly charge to full power, no matter what state they were in before.
This is a little bit more Super Saiyan than Sailor Moon, but you do get to go through a whole transformation/power up sequence and smite your enemies because they were mean to your friends.

The two Toho versions of King Kong: King Kong Escapes (1967) and King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962).
Contrary to popular opinion, these are NOT the same character.  Not only is there a significant appearance and size difference between the two, but they don’t take place in the same “movie universe.”
King Kong Escapes was a co-production with Rankin-Bass, which was producing a King Kong animated series at the time.  The film used characters and concepts from the series - i.e. Dr. Who (no, not THAT one) and Mechani-Kong - and essentially is a stand-alone, live-action episode.
Rankin-Bass owned the character Mechani-Kong, which is why that mecha never appeared again in any Toho production.   Gorosaurus was original to Toho, so he was able to appear the following year in Destroy All Monsters (also because his suit was still in pretty good condition).
Toho, of course, did not own the character King Kong either.  The big ape was licensed to Toho to use for five years, and the studio just managed to get KKE made before the license ran out.

Godzilla and My Favorite Nemeses
There is no monster like the king, Godzilla. He is, to me, better than my fav cherry pie filling topped cheesecake. Ask me, “want to see a Godzilla movie or do you want a whole cheesecake?” Must you ask twice? Go ahead, wave that thing under my nose, go ahead. My response: “I’ll eat that cake after the movie.”
Tumblr media
Some monsters are weapons used by aliens with dastardly plans to take over the world and in order to do that, they must destroy Godzilla. They come to earth disguised as humans and present themselves as peaceful beings wanting to cohabitate and naive politicians believe them and hold press conferences to display whatever it is they want all to see. Then, the ah-ha moment happens when the aliens’ true intention is unveiled. The people of Japan expose the aliens, the defense league gather their forces and ready themselves for retaliation. Monsters are unleashed, but earthly weapons aren’t effective against the monsters and all hope for mankind seems lost until… dun, dun, da! Godzilla appears and opens a can of whoop-ass on the enemy! Booyah! A great battle ensues to which the king of monsters always wins.
I’ve always imagined Godzilla saying, “Fool! Only I can wreak havoc on this planet! This is my territory!” You go, Godzilla! You show ‘em why you’re the king!
Here are my favorites:
King Kong
Tumblr media
The mighty Kong was introduced to American cinema in 1933. An uncharted Skull Island is where this great ape dwells and he is considered a God that is feared and respected by the natives. This version of Kong was rebooted in 1976 with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange and in 2005 with Jack Black, Naomi Watts, and Adrian Brody.
Many Kong movies were adapted in feature films and weren’t as popular as the ones stated above. But the most popular and favored Kong was introduced to the world in 2017, Kong: Skull Island.
Kong. The mighty king of Skull Island is bigger and badder than other versions. I loved this movie. A giant gentle soul defending his home from intruders. We saw that a giant creature isn’t always bad and some humans can have bad intentions when they’re fueled by ignorance and fear. We also saw that some giant creatures are bad and some humans have good intentions. Great movie.
Kong first appeared with Godzilla was in the 1962 release of King Kong vs. Godzilla. This movie was funny to say the least. The actors were great as always, and the monsters were creative. It surprised me that Godzilla was defeated. I rewatched the movie twice to confirm my eyes weren’t tricking me.
The 2021 release of Godzilla vs. Kong displayed the great powerhouses fighting one another where Godzilla is the victor. Later, Kong and the king would team up against a powerful robot creation called Mechagodzilla.
Kong’s brute strength and intelligence makes him a worthy and respectable rival.
Mechagodzilla
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This robot was introduced to us in 1974 Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Mecha was created by martians that wanted to take over the earth and to do that, they would use their creation to kill Godzilla. In 1975, Terror of Mechagodzilla reintroduced the robot by the same martians. You know Godzilla defeated it in both movies. In the 1993 and 2002, Mechagodzilla was made by a Godzilla task force to use in battle against the king.
His most recent appearance in the in the 2021 release, he was created by a greedy tech tycoon. This version was ultra cool and maybe the last time we see the mechanical giant in a live action production.
Mechagodzilla is controlled by its creators. However, in two movies, it was built around a Godzilla skeleton and the latest had Ghidorah’s essence, or DNA. These robots were manually controlled until the spirit of both monsters broke free to move and think independently. The Godzilla spirit fought to save Japan from Godzilla’s rage and the Ghidorah one just wanted to destroy the earth and anything that attempted to stop it.
King Ghidorah
Tumblr media
Ghidorah is my favorite Godzilla nemesis of all. This amazing monster has three heads and shoots lightening with a force so powerful to knock Godzilla off his feet. Considered to be the greatest and strongest foe, every battle between the two is epic especially that Ghidorah flies.
We first met Ghidorah in 1964 in Ghidorah, the Three-headed Monster, where he emerged from a meteorite. He reappears as a challenging foe for Godzilla and his fighting technique never is boring. One head bites down on Godzilla’s neck, another bites his shoulder, and the one head bites wherever it gets a hold of, and then… ZAP! They shoot powerful jolts into his body. So awesome! It always seems Godzilla is getting his butt handed to him, but in the end he triumphs.
In 1992, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, people from the future created Ghidorah from three separate cute creatures called Dorats and use it to destroy Japan but unbeknownst to them, Godzilla emerges and destroys not only Ghidorah, but them, too. Androids, spaceships, and American actors brought this live action thriller to life. This Ghidorah is by far the biggest and strongest one until he appeared in the 2019 Godzilla: King of the Monsters and he was bigger and badder. I’ll say it again, Ghidorah is the best nemesis and will always be my favorite one.
Space Godzilla
Tumblr media
1994’s Space Godzilla proved to be a worthy opponent for Godzilla in the Toho releases Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla.
The terrifying monster didn’t have an origin and was explained to have come to life when Godzilla’s cells were released into space by either Mothra’s or Biollante’s spores. His cells would’ve been caught in a black hole, combine with crystalline organisms and was exposed to space radiation. From there, the cells were transformed into a replica of Godzilla. Instead of dorsal plates along its back, it had space crystals - two massive ones on its shoulders and a gold crystal on its head. The crystals is Spacegodzilla’s power source that shoots beams. It also had the ability to create crystal prisms from the earth that it used to imprison baby Godzilla.
M.O.G.U.E.R.A., Mobile Operations G-Force Universal Expert Robot: Aero-type, was made by the JSDF to defend Japan from Godzilla; it teamed up with him to fight and defeat Spacegodzilla.
Orga
Tumblr media
Godzilla 2000 is my favorite Godzilla movie. Toho combined traditional suit acting in the monster fight, and CGI for the UFO. This was the first production that used CGI and it opened doors for future Godzilla movies to utilize this new tool.
Orga is an alien that crashed to earth at the bottom of the ocean millions of years ago where it remained until the 20th Century. During its dormancy, the UFO coral enveloped the entire vessel. A team of scientists discovered a power source underwater and traced it to the large object believed to be a meteorite. This was a treasure find for the team and nothing would be more gratifying than to raise it and examine it. During the raising attempt, the meteorite came to life when sunlight touched its surface; this startled the scientists as this was unexpected. The lead researcher determined it was an alien object that relies on sunlight for its mobility.
In the meantime, Godzilla has emerged and is destroying as many power source plants in the vicinity because he knew about the alien, but the humans did not. The JSDF utilizes all means to kill Godzilla until they realize the UFO’s intentions.
What made this movie great is it showed two sides of human behavior. One side wants to study Godzilla and learn to adapt to his existence, and one side wants to kill him. In the end, it’s realized that though Godzilla is destructive, he saves humanity from invasions meant to truly destroy them. Godzilla reminds the people that there is mutual respect between them and they must understand that, especially those determined to kill him.
Final word
All Godzilla movies are awesome, except for one: Tri-Star’s 1998 Godzilla starring Matthew Broderick - to be discussed later. These are my favorite nemesis, but there more great ones who’ve faced Godzilla in battle.
To truly enjoy these films, you must not watch them with criticism, but enjoy them for what they are - storyline and all. Keep in mind the timelines of release and that CGI wasn’t an option like it is today. I can only hope more Godzilla movies are made and they forever bring joy to all fans that love him as much as I.

my dream crossovers
this was another patreon-exclusive post that i'm posting here now because i'm not on patreon anymore. this one was from august of 2022.
i’ve been reading a lot of crossover comics lately between my alien vs. predator reviews and i also recently read (and really enjoyed) the teenage mutant ninja turtles/batman crossover.
on that note, i will say that there are a few i would definitely do if they didn’t already exist? including the aforementioned batman/teenage mutant ninja turtles crossover, as well as teenage mutant ninja turtles/power rangers (i would totally redo this one if it were only the next mutation/power rangers in space crossover, but there’s also a comic book that has the mighty morphin power rangers meeting the ninja turtles), king kong vs. planet of the apes, star trek/planet of the apes and teenage mutant ninja turtles/ghostbusters.
i also probably would’ve wanted to do like a star trek vs. star wars type deal back when i was way more into star wars, but i’m just so apathetic about the star wars franchise at this point that it really just doesn’t seem like a good thing for me to try to weigh in on. or any other star wars crossover, for that matter.
so! with all of those being cleared out of the way, let’s get into my dream crossovers that i would love to see become a reality.
godzilla vs. gamera
this is literally the first one that always occurs to me when this topic comes up, and the bitch of it is it almost happened. kadokawa actually approached toho in 2002 and offered to co-produce the mega-crossover, but unfortunately toho declined. the two did battle each other in a stage show in 1970, but otherwise the standard bearers for their respective kaiju universes have yet to properly meet.
thinking about what form this epic showdown could take, obviously the difficulty curve on a comic book feels like it should be the lowest, and is often where these kinds of crossovers start. unfortunately i’m actually not really super versed in godzilla’s comic book exploits, so i can’t really meaningfully comment on this. but considering godzilla vs. charles barkley was a thing back in the 90s and godzilla vs. the mighty morphin power rangers is a thing today, it feels like he should be able to take gamera on in comic book form, right?
the ultimate goal would be a live-action movie, though. and as much as i do love legendary’s cgi godzilla movies this would obviously be a suitmation affair. the plot will work itself out, i mean, it’s godzilla vs. gamera. as long as you give me what it promises on the tin, we’re gonna be fine.
sonic the hedgehog/teenage mutant ninja turtles
my starting point here is that a lot of the characters just match up very well. shads and leo are very serious and dedicated. knux and raph are angy and strong in so many ways. donnie and tails do machines. mikey and sonic are extremely silly and have absolutely the biggest, kindest hearts on their respective teams.
you lose this a bit with the primary villains as eggman is much more comically inept than literally any version of shredder other than the 1987 cartoon or next mutation. but if you bring satam eggman energy to the character you can probably have them coexist either as rival bad guys or teaming up to make everyone’s lives miserable.
obviously eggman is going to make all kinds of turtle-themed robots for this shit, fuck. probably mecha or metal versions of all the turtles, too. dude has one move and he’s gonna use it.
teenage mutant ninja turtles vs. x-men
the only acceptable medium for this is an animated movie, the overall look of which will be based on the 90s arcade games. the x-men team will be composed of the characters you’re able to select from in the arcade game: cyclops, colossus, wolverine, storm, nightcrawler, and dazzler.
the story will be very simple. the turtles and x-men will start off fighting through shredder/magneto’s minions separately and end up fighting each other at first but then end up teaming up when they realize shredder and magneto are working together. these will be the arcade game versions of both villains, so shredder will basically be a less pathetic version of his cartoon self and magneto will have no real character other than being evil and powerful.
teen titans/teenage mutant ninja turtles
look i know this list is very heavy with ninja turtles, but it’s just kind of amazing how many high profile mashups with the ninja turtles have been left on the table. also in the x-men crossover they had “mutant” in common, and in this one they have “teenage” in common, so we’re staying on theme, alright?
for this crossover i’m thinking we get the dc animated movie universe version of the teen titans. y’know, the ones from justice league vs. teen titans and teen titans: the judas contract. i just love this lineup with nightwing and starfire as their fearless leaders, i’d love more time to develop damian wayne robin and raven’s relationship, and beast boy and blue beetle are just the absolute best boys.
cyborg can come too.
sonic the hedgehog/batman
on paper there’s absolutely no reason this should work, but i’m sorry i just need sonic fanboying all over bats, shads trying to out-edgy him, knux taking damian or jason under his wing, tails bonding with tim drake over brain stuff and/or dick grayson over favorite sidekick stuff, and alfred just being sassy about literally everything.
also maybe flash can make a cameo just to set up the obvious race between him and sonic.
x-files vs. resident evil
you really think a zombie outbreak happens in a major city without fox mulder catching wind of it and bursting into the office that morning with a hearty “scully you’re not gonna believe this”?
given that i’m referencing the larger raccoon city outbreak i’d want this to be set around when resident evil 2 came out (1998), which places it around when season 6 of the x-files and the x-files movie came out. so obviously live-action is right out, so we’d be looking at either a comic book or cgi movie.
my thinking here is that mulder hears about the early stages of the outbreak from either the lone gunmen or one of his other sources. mysterious outbreak, corporate and police overreach, does this not sound like exactly the setup for an x-files episode? scully rolls her eyes at all his insinuations that they’re about to be in a real-life zombie movie but is happy to go along to try to deal with the weird police state bullshit happening, they see some creepy stuff early on and then get caught in the thick of the huge outbreak.
eventually they meet up with leon and claire and kick all kinds of zombie ass before making a desperate escape on the train and then we get some patented mulder/scully field note typing voiceovers (or text boxes if it’s a comic) to close things out.
out of all of these, this might be the one i have the clearest idea in my head of what it would be like. even though it’s probably not a crossover that would occur to most people unprompted, it feels kind of like a no-brainer when you think about it.
she-ra (2018) vs. thundercats (2011)
due to the tragic cancellation of the extremely fun thundercats reboot after just one season, this is the least likely one to actually happen. but, c’mon! the main hero has a sword with superpowers, there’s furries, this one is kinda obvious!
i think our catboys think the horde are the good guys at first because animal people are much more well-represented there, setting up the lion-o vs. adora fight. but when they figure out the horde are the bad guys, we get lion-o vs. catra! also mumm-ra teams up with the horde probably.
honorable mentions
star trek/ninja turtles
i don’t have much of a justification for this or an idea of how it would work, but idw owns both licenses and there were action figures depicting all the turtles as star trek characters so obviously i’m not the first one to have this thought!
teenage mutant ninja turtles vs. universal monsters
another one there were crossover action figures of. make it happen!
teenage mutant ninja turtles/kung fu panda
i didn’t super want to go to the trouble of fleshing this one out, but it feels like another no-brainer. and obviously mikey would have the biggest crush on tigress after she beat him up. obviously.
james bond vs. mission: impossible
another one i didn’t super want to flesh out, but ethan hunt’s real superpower is having friends so he’d kick james bond’s ass.
the owl house/she-ra (2018)
sadly i wasn’t really able to come up with a super concrete idea for this one, but both of these cartoons hit such similar spots that it really feels like there should be something here.
